Organic waste (OW) reuse in agriculture is a common practice fostered by benefits in terms of waste recycling and crop production. However, OW amendments potentially affect the fate of pesticide spread on fields to protect the crops from pests and weeds. The influence of OW on the sorption, degradation, and leaching of pesticides is generally studied for each mechanism separately under artificial laboratory conditions. Our study aims at evaluating the balance of these mechanisms under more realistic conditions to clarify the influence of three common OW amendments on the fate, in soil, of the widely used herbicide S-Metolachlor. We performed leaching experiments in large undisturbed soil cores amended with raw sewage sludge, composted sludge, and digested pig slurry (digestate), respectively. We monitored S-Metolachlor and its two main metabolites MET-OA and MET-ESA in the leachates during a succession of 10 rainfall events over 126 days. We also quantified the remaining S-Metolachlor and metabolites in the soil at the end of the experiments. S-Metolachlor leaching didn't exceed 0.1% of the applied dose with or without OW amendment. Despite a soil organic carbon increase of 3 to 32%, OW amendments did not significantly affect the amount of S-Metolachlor that leached through the soil (0.01 to 0.1%) nor its transformation rate (6.0 to 8.6%). However, it affected the degradation pathways with an increase of MET-OA relative to MET-ESA formed after OW amendment (28 to 54%) compared to the controls (8%). Concentration of S-Metolachlor and metabolites in the leachates of all treatments greatly exceeded the regulatory limit for groundwater intended for human consumption in Europe. These high concentrations were probably the consequence of preferential macropore flow. Colloids had comparable levels in the leachates after S-Metolachlor application. Dissolved organic carbon was also comparable in the controls, digestate, and sludge treatments but was 65% higher in the compost-amended cores. These results, along with a great variability among replicates inherent to experiments performed under realistic conditions, partly explain the limited impact of OW on the transport of S-Metolachlor

Water contamination is mainly due to run-off and leaching transfer, which is linked to physic characteristics and chemic composition, especially organic matter concentration. The study was led on three lands with different concentrations in organic matters and bentazone was the pesticide monitored. We can conclude that soils containing the biggest amount of organic matter and the highest rate of infiltrability lead to fastest transfer of bentazone. | Le principal phénomène impliqué dans la contamination des eaux par les produits phytosanitaires en milieu agricole est le transfert par ruissellement et lessivage. L'importance du transfert vertical est déterminée d'une part par les caractéristiques physiques du sol impliquées dans la circulation de l'eau et d'autre part par sa composition chimique. La matière organique, en particulier, représente une composante majeure du système sol dont il convient de préciser le rôle dans le devenir des pesticides en fonction des conditions pédoclimatiques. A cet effet, trois sols cultivés sous un même climat mais présentant des teneurs naturelles variées en matière organique (de 2 à 6 %), ont fait l'objet d'une caractérisation organique et physique et d'un suivi de la distribution verticale au cours du temps d'un herbicide, la bentazone. Le sol présentant un fort potentiel de rétention des produits phytosanitaires dû à sa teneur élevée en matière organique (6 %) et une grande infiltrabilité, a donné lieu à des transferts rapides de bentazone. Au contraire, dans les sols présentant moins de matière organique et une porosité plus fine, le transfert vertical a été ralenti (davantage de sites d'adsorption rencontrés et dégradation plus intense lors d'un temps de séjour plus long). Ainsi, des niveaux de transferts variables peuvent être reliés à des statuts organiques et des porosités caractéristiques.

La mobilité du diuron et de l'oryzalin a été étudiée en colonnes de sol non perturbé au laboratoire. Les sols étudiés sont trois sols viticoles de la région Bourgogne (Vosne-Romanée, 21) et ont été prélevés selon une topolithoséquence. Leurs teneurs en carbone organique sont respectivement de 1,2 %, 1,7 % et 2,2 % pour le sol brun calcaire de mi-pente (SBC MP), le sol brun calcaire de bas de pente (SBC BP) et la rendzine. Après une hauteur de pluie simulée de 845 mm, les percolats respectifs de la rendzine, du SBC MP et du SBC BP contiennent des quantités plus importantes de diuron (3,2 %, 11,8 % et 18,8 %), que d'oryzalin (0,2 %, 4,9 % et 3,7 % des quantités appliquées). Dans les colonnes de sol, les quantités extractibles de résidus herbicides sont plus élevées pour le diuron (48,7 %, 31,1 % et 35,6 %) que pour l'oryzalin (12,7 %, 11,9 % et 15,5 %) dans la rendzine, le SBC MB et le SBC BP respectivement. La distribution des deux herbicides au sein des colonnes de sol et les quantités percolées semblent en relation avec la teneur en matière organique du sol en surface et avec la structure du sol en profondeur. | Mobility of diuron and oryzalin were studied in undisturbed soil columns in laboratory. In soil columns, more residues were extractable for diuron (48,7 %, 31,1 % et 35,6 %) than for oryzalin (12,7 %, 11,9 % et 15,5 %) from the rendzine, SBC MB and SBC BP, respectively. Mobility of this two herbicides seems in relation to organic matter content in surface soils and to structure of the soils deeper.
