Subsurface wastewater infiltration systems (SWISs) have been widely used to treat rural domestic sewage. However, the low nitrogen removal and severe clogging problem always restrict the sustainability of SWISs for wastewater treatment. This study investigated the effects of aeration and biochar on the accumulation of nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the substrate of loess soil-based SWISs for understanding the accumulation characteristics of DOM and the enhanced decontamination mechanism. The results showed that biochar addition could not improve the accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus in the substrate, but could enhance denitrification (22%) via providing sufficient carbon for microorganisms. Moreover, the accumulation of organic matter in the substrate was also greatly affected. The DOM concentration of System D in the 40–60 cm layer reached 85.76 mg L⁻¹, which indicated that biochar could release abundant DOM. Substrate DOM mainly contained humic acid-like and tryptophan-like substances. Moreover, the refractory macromolecular DOM components with high aromaticity and humification were found in the substrate below 60 cm of systems with biochar addition. This may be related to the DOM released by biochar and the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) produced by microorganisms. It may affect the sustainability of the substrate to a certain extent, but fortunately that intermittent aeration could reduce this adverse effect. This research could provide new insights for preventing clogging and useful guidance for improving wastewater treatment performance in SWISs.

The fate of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in soil environment is determined by the hydrophilic performance and solubility of VAs and the type of soil. In this study, sulfadiazine (SDZ) and chlortetracycline (CTC) were selected as target pollutants, and a batch sorption method was used to find out the single and sorption competitive behavior and mechanism of the target pollutants on loess soil. Kinetic studies showed the apparent sorption equilibrium was reached 0–6 h for CTC and 0–12 h for SDZ. The sorption kinetics of VAs on loess soil were fitted well with a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Sorption thermodynamic data indicated the isotherm sorption of both SDZ and CTC on loess soil was fitted well with Freundlich isothermal (R², 0.960–0.975) and linear models (R², 0.908–0.976). The sorption affinity of CTC (Kd, 290–1620 L/kg for CTC) was much greater than that of SDZ (Kd, 0.6–4.9 L/kg for SDZ). The results also suggest that SDZ may be easily mobilized or leached from loess soil at neutral and alkaline pH, while CTC may be easily mobilized or leached at neutral pH. The sorption of each single target pollutant on the outer layer complex decreased with increasing ionic strength. Higher initial concentrations resulted in greater sorption capacity of target pollutants on loess soil increased. The sorption capacities of CTC and SDZ in the mixed system were lower than the sorption capacity of each single system, showing a competitive sorption behavior of CTC and SDZ during the sorption process. Overall, CTC showed the highest sorption potential in loess soil, whereas SDZ showed a high leaching risk in loess soil. These findings contribute to understanding the fate of different VAs in loess in the natural environment.

Soils may be contaminated by human or veterinary pharmaceuticals. Their behaviour in soil environment is largely controlled by sorption of different compounds in a soil solution onto soil constituents. Here we studied the sorption affinities of 4 pharmaceuticals (atenolol, trimethoprim, carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole) applied in solute mixtures to soils taken from different horizons of 3 soil types (Greyic Phaeozem on loess, Haplic Luvisol on loess and Haplic Cambisol on gneiss). In the case of the carbamazepine (neutral form) and sulfamethoxazole (partly negatively charged and neutral), sorption affinity of compounds decreased with soil depth, i.e. decreased with soil organic matter content. On the other hand, in the case of atenolol (positively charged) and trimethoprim (partly positively charged and neutral) compound sorption affinity was not depth dependent. Compound sorption affinities in the four-solute systems were compared with those experimentally assessed in topsoils, and were estimated using the pedotransfer rules proposed in our previous study for single-solute systems. While sorption affinities of trimethoprim and carbamazepine in topsoils decreased slightly, sorption affinity of sulfamethoxazole increased. Decreases in sorption of the two compounds could be attributed to their competition between each other and competition with atenolol. Differences between carbamazepine and atenolol behaviour in the one- and four-solute systems could also be explained by the slightly different soil properties in this and our previous study. A great increase of sulfamethoxazole sorption in the Greyic Phaeozem and Haplic Luvisol was observed, which was attributed to elimination of repulsion between negatively charged molecules and particle surfaces due to cation sorption (atenolol and trimethoprim) on soil particles. Thus, our results proved not only an antagonistic but also a synergic affect of differently charged organic molecules on their sorption to soil constituents.

This study investigates the dynamics of glyphosate and AMPA in the soil surface layer of two fields growing glyphosate-resistant crops in the loess Pampas of Córdoba Province, Argentina. Glyphosate decay and AMPA formation/decay were studied after a single application, using decay kinetic models. Furthermore, glyphosate and AMPA concentrations were investigated in runoff to evaluate their off-site risk. During a 2.5-month study, cultivations of glyphosate-resistant soybean and maize received an application of 1.0 and 0.81 kg a.e. ha⁻¹, respectively, of Roundup UltraMax©. Topsoil samples (0–1, 1–2 cm) were collected weekly (including before application) and analysed for glyphosate, AMPA and soil moisture (SM) contents. Runoff was collected from runoff plots (3 m²) and weirs after 2 erosive rainfall events, and analysed for glyphosate and AMPA contents (water, eroded-sediment). Under both cultivations, background residues in soil before application were 0.27–0.42 mg kg⁻¹ for glyphosate and 1.3–1.7 mg kg⁻¹ for AMPA. In the soybean area, the single-first-order (SFO) model performed best for glyphosate decay. In the maize area, the bi-phasic Hockey-Stick (HS) model performed best for glyphosate decay, due to an abrupt change in SM regimes after high rainfall. Glyphosate half-life and DT₉₀ were 6.0 and 19.8 days, respectively, in the soybean area, and 11.1 and 15.4 days, respectively, in the maize area. In the soybean area, 24% of the glyphosate was degraded to AMPA. In the maize area, it was only 5%. AMPA half-life and DT₉₀ were 54.7 and 182 days, respectively, in the soybean area, and 71.0 and 236 days, respectively, in the maize area. Glyphosate and AMPA contents were 1.1–17.5 times higher in water-eroded sediment than in soil. We conclude that AMPA persists and may accumulate in soil, whereas both glyphosate and AMPA are prone to off-site transport with water erosion, representing a contamination risk for surface waters and adjacent fields.

There is an increasing interest in spatial and temporal variation of air pollution and its association with weather conditions. We presented the spatial and temporal variation of Air Pollution Index (API) and examined the associations between API and meteorological factors during 2001–2011 in Guangzhou, China. A Seasonal-Trend Decomposition Procedure Based on Loess (STL) was used to decompose API. Wavelet analyses were performed to examine the relationships between API and several meteorological factors. Air quality has improved since 2005. APIs were highly correlated among five monitoring stations, and there were substantial temporal variations. Timescale-dependent relationships were found between API and a variety of meteorological factors. Temperature, relative humidity, precipitation and wind speed were negatively correlated with API, while diurnal temperature range and atmospheric pressure were positively correlated with API in the annual cycle. Our findings should be taken into account when determining air quality forecasts and pollution control measures.

Li, Ying | Cao, Wenzhi | Su, Caixia | Hong, Huasheng
The natural process of eutrophication is accelerated by human activities worldwide that interrupt nutrient biogeochemical cycles. Three algal bloom events have been monitored in the northern tributary of the Jiulong River since 2009. The inflection points in a robust locally-weighted regression analysis (LOESS) of the relationship between TN and TP concentrations in the river water, and a TN:TP comparison with nutrient source loadings, suggested that both external loading and internal nutrient cycling contributed to these algal blooms. Nutrient release from the sediments may have played an important role in regulating the nutrients in the overlying water column. In particular, excessive nutrient inputs from various sources and ubiquitous river damming caused further accumulation of the nutrient loading. In-situ autochthonous primary production was enhanced in this relatively stable “river” to “lake” water body. Thus, attention must be paid to the effects of river damming and the consequent internal nutrient release.

Benthic foraminifera, heavy metals, and sediment grain sizes were studied in three bays of Hainan Island, and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and nonparametric regression were used to reveal the relationship between foraminifera and their environment. According to our survey, the three bays were moderately contaminated by Mo and As and uncontaminated to moderately contaminated by Pb, Zn, Cr, Sb, and Hg. The spatial pattern of heavy metals was comparable to sediment transport trends, indicating that their distribution was determined by sediment transport. Both living and dead foraminiferal assemblages were analyzed, and their compositions were similar, although the latter had a higher density and diversity. Based on the CCA method, species were divided into three groups, each of which responded differently to heavy metals and grain sizes. The response curves of individual species to heavy metals and grain sizes were obtained by using the Loess (locally weighted regression) method.

Urban fugitive dust samples were collected to determine the chemical profiles of fugitive dust over Xi'an. Seventy eight samples were collected and divided into categories of paved road dust, construction dust, cement dust, and soil dust. Eighteen elements, including Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Pb, and eight water–soluble inorganic ions, including Na+, Mg2−, Ca2−, NH4−, F−, Cl−, NO3− and SO42−, were measured. The most abundant elements in these urban dust samples were Al, Si, Ca, and Fe. Al, Si, K, and Ti and showed strong positive correlations with each other, indicating they are typical dust trace elements. In contrast, elements of Ca, Zn, As, and Pb had negative correlations to crustal elements. Si/Al, K/Al, Ti/Al, Mn/Al, and Fe/Al ratios varied insignificantly among these four samples types; these ratios are similar to the properties of loess, desert, and Gobi soil dust reported in previous studies. A significantly higher Ca/Al ratio was dominant in the chemical profile of the cement samples. In addition, high Pb/Al and Zn/Al ratios were detected in comparison with those in the Gobi soil, desert soil, and loess soil samples, which indicated that Pb/Al and Zn/Al ratios can be considered as markers of urban dust. To t a l water–soluble ions occupied only a small fraction (<5%) in the urban fugitive soil samples indicating that most of the materials in the fugitive dust were insoluble. Ca2+ and SO42− were the most abundant ions in all samples. Most of the Ca and K in the fugitive soil samples were in insoluble phases, which differ significantly in comparison with combustion sources. A strong correlation was observed between Ca2+ and estimated CO32− levels indicating that most of Ca2+ was in the form of CaCO3 rather than other calcium minerals in Xi’an fugitive dust.

Microplastics (MPs) have long been the subject of scientific articles dealing with environmental pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence and amount of MPs in soil aggregates depending on land use. The soil in the research area was formed on loess parent material and classified as Haplic Luvisol. From the soil samples were determined particle size distribution curves, and subsequently 40 mixed samples were dry sieved and then wet sieved to determine the percentage of individual soil fractions of water-stable soil aggregates (WSA). The representation and number of MPs were determined for the most common fractions. It was found that MPs occur in both cases of land use, slightly more (62 pt/5 g) in forest soil compared to arable (40 pt/5 g). It is generally known that soil is not homogeneous, but the amount of MPs in top layer for arable soil (8000 pt/kg) and forest (12,400 pt/kg) was estimated. The effect of land use is that forest WSA have a larger mean weight diameter (MWD) than arable land. By being larger, they are also more stable to movement during water erosion. MPs are bound in soil aggregates and they move together with them. This can be deduced from our measurements, because MPs extracted from WSA do not disintegrate in water after 2 hours and even after subsequent wet sieving. The effect of land use on microplastic occurrence and movement should be continually of concern in the future.

The leakage of chemical compounds in landfill leachate led to serious environment pollution, especially, the compounds termed endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA). It is very important to study the adsorption behavior of endocrine disruptors in modified soil for predicting and evaluating the potential harm of endocrine disruptors to the soil. Bentonite-amended Chinese loess mixtures, with various proportions of bentonite, were used for the removal of BPA from an aqueous solution. A batch test was used to investigate the adsorption properties of bisphenol A on bentonite and Chinese loess mixtures. The influences of bentonite proportion, temperature, reaction time, pH, and soil-water ratios on the adsorption process were considered. The Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) was used to clarify the change of functional groups before and after the adsorption of BPA on soil. The adsorption mechanism of BPA on soil was discussed preliminary. The results show that the addition of bentonite to the loess can improve the adsorption rate of BPA. The adsorption of BPA was mainly a spontaneous, exothermic, entropy decreasing physical adsorption process. The interaction between bentonite content and reaction concentration had a beneficial effect on BPA adsorption. The linear relationship between bentonite content and adsorption capacity was obtained. The results indicate that bentonite amended loess can provide a good liner for BPA.
