The consequence of the lockdowns implemented to address the COVID-19 pandemic on human health damage due to air pollution and other environmental issues must be better understood. This paper analyses the effect of reducing energy demand on the evolution of environmental impacts during the occurrence of 2020-lockdown periods in Italy, with a specific focus on life expectancy. An energy metabolism analysis is conducted based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of all monthly energy consumptions, by sector, category and province area in Italy between January 2015 to December 2020. Results show a general decrease (by ∼5% on average) of the LCA midpoint impact categories (global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, fine particulate matter formation, etc.) over the entire year 2020 when compared to past years. These avoided impacts, mainly due to reductions in fossil energy consumptions, are meaningful during the first lockdown phase between March and May 2020 (by ∼21% on average). Regarding the LCA endpoint damage on human health, ∼66 Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) per 100,000 inhabitants are estimated to be saved. The analysis shows that the magnitude of the officially recorded casualties is substantially larger than the estimated gains in human lives due to the environmental impact reductions. Future research could therefore investigate the complex cause-effect relationships between the deaths occurred in 2020 imputed to COVID-19 disease and co-factors other than the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Glyphosate (GLY) is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is the most commonly applied pesticide in terrestrial ecosystems in the U.S. and, potentially, worldwide. However, the combined effects of warming associated with climate change and exposure to GLY and GLY-based formulations (GBFs) on terrestrial animals are poorly understood. Animals progress through several life stages (e.g., embryonic, larval, and juvenile stages) that may exhibit different sensitivities to stressors. Therefore, we factorially manipulated temperature and GLY/GBF exposure in the variable field cricket (Gryllus lineaticeps) during two life stages—nymphal development and adulthood—and examined key animal traits, such as developmental rate, body size, food consumption, reproductive investment, and lifespan. A thermal environment simulating future climate warming obligated several costs to fitness-related traits. For example, warming experienced during nymphal development reduced survival, adult body mass and size, and investment into flight capacity and reproduction. Warming experienced by adults reduced lifespan and growth rate. Alternatively, the effects of GBF exposure were more subtle, often context-dependent (e.g., effects were only detected in one sex or temperature regime), and were stronger during adult exposure relative to exposure during development. There was evidence of additive costs of warming and GBF exposure to rates of feeding and growth in adults. Yet, the negative effect of GBF exposure to adult lifespan did not occur in warming conditions, suggesting that ongoing climate change may obscure some of the costs of GBFs to non-target organisms. The effects of GLY alone (i.e., in the absence of proprietary surfactants found in commercial formulations) were non-existent. Animals will be increasingly exposed to warming and GBFs, and our results indicate that GBF exposure and warming can entail additive costs for an animal taxon (insects) that plays critical roles in terrestrial ecosystems.

Xanthan gels were assessed to control the reductive dechlorination of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and trichlorobenzenes (TCBs) in a strong permeability contrast and high velocity sedimentary aquifer. An alkaline degradation was selected because of the low cost of NaOH and Ca(OH)₂. The rheology of alkaline xanthan gels and their ability to deliver alkalinity homogeneously, while maintaining the latter, were studied. Whereas the xanthan gels behaved like non-Newtonian shear-thinning fluids, alkalinity and Ca(OH)₂ microparticles had detrimental effects, yet, the latter decreased with the shear-rate. Breakthrough curves for the NaOH and Ca(OH)₂ in xanthan solutions, carried out in the lowest permeability soil (9.9 μm²), demonstrated the excellent transmission of alkalinity, while moderate pressure gradients were applied. Injection velocities ranging from 1.8 to 3.8 m h⁻¹ are anticipated in the field, given the permeability range from 9.9 to 848.7 μm². Despite a permeability contrast of 8.7 in an anisotropic aquifer model, the NaOH and the Ca(OH)₂ both in xanthan gels spread only 5- and 7-times faster in the higher permeability zone, demonstrating that the delivery was enhanced. Moreover, the alkaline gels which were injected into a high permeability layer under lateral water flow, showed a persistent blocking effect and longevity (timescale of weeks), in contrast to the alkaline solution in absence of xanthan. Kinetics of alkaline dechlorination carried out on the historically contaminated soil, using the Ca(OH)₂ suspension in xanthan solution, showed that HCHs were converted in TCBs by dehydrodechlorination, whereas the latter were then degraded by reductive hydrogenolysis. Degradation kinetics were achieved within 30 h for the major and most reactive fraction of HCHs.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) and other pollinator populations are declining worldwide, and the reasons remain controversial. Based on laboratory testing, fungicides have traditionally been considered bee-safe. However, there have been no experimental tests of the effects of fungicides on colony health under field conditions, and limited correlational data suggests there may be negative impacts on bees at levels experienced in the field. We tested the effects of one of the most commonly used fungicides on colony health by feeding honey bee colonies pollen containing Pristine® (active ingredients: 25.2% boscalid, 12.8% pyraclostrobin) at four levels that bracketed concentrations we measured for pollen collected by bees in almond orchards. We also developed a method for calculating per-bee and per-larva dose. Pristine® consumption significantly and dose-dependently reduced worker lifespan and colony population size, with negative health effects observed even at the lowest doses. The lowest concentration we tested caused a 15% reduction in the worker population at an estimated dosage that was three orders of magnitude below the estimated LD₁₅ values for previous acute laboratory studies. The enhanced toxicity under field conditions is at least partially due to activation of colonial nutritional responses missed by lab tests. Pristine® causes colonies to respond to perceived protein malnutrition by increasing colony pollen collection. Additionally, Pristine induces much earlier transitioning to foraging in individual workers, which could be the cause of shortened lifespans. These findings demonstrate that Pristine® can negatively impact honey bee individual and colony health at concentrations relevant to what they experience from pollination behavior under current agricultural conditions.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is a primary vector for major arboviruses, and its control is mainly based on the use of insecticides. Caffeine and spent coffee grounds (CG) are potential agents in controlling Ae. aegypti by reducing survival and blocking larval development. In this study, we analyzed the effects of treatment with common CG (CCG: with caffeine), decaffeinated CG (DCG: with low caffeine), and pure caffeine on the survival, behavior, and morphology of the midgut of Ae. aegypti under laboratory conditions. Third instar larvae (L3) were exposed to different concentrations of CCG, DCG, and caffeine. All compounds significantly affected larval survival, and sublethal concentrations reduced larval locomotor activity, delayed development, and reduced adult life span. Damage to the midgut of treated larvae included changes in epithelial morphology, increased number of peroxidase-positive cells (more abundant in DCG-treated larvae), and caspase 3-positive cells (more abundant in CCG-treated larvae), suggesting that the treatments triggered cell damage, leading to activation of cell death. In addition, the treatments reduced the FMRFamide-positive enteroendocrine cells and dividing cells compared to the control. CG and caffeine have larvicidal effects on Ae. aegypti that warrant field testing for their potential to control mosquitoes.

Commercial beekeepers in many locations are experiencing increased annual colony losses of honey bees (Apis mellifera), but the causes, including the role of agrochemicals in colony losses, remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic consumption of pollen containing a widely-used fungicide (Pristine®), known to inhibit bee mitochondria in vitro, which has recently been shown to reduce honey bee worker lifespan when field-colonies are provided with pollen containing field-realistic levels of Pristine®. We fed field colonies pollen with a field-realistic concentration of Pristine® (2.3 ppm) and a concentration two orders of magnitude higher (230 ppm). To challenge flight behavior and elicit near-maximal metabolic rate, we measured flight quality and metabolic rates of bees in two lower-than-normal air densities. Chronic consumption of 230 but not 2.3 ppm Pristine® reduced maximal flight performance and metabolic rates, suggesting that the observed decrease in lifespans of workers reared on field-realistic doses of Pristine®-laced pollen is not due to inhibition of flight muscle mitochondria. However, consumption of either the 230 or 2.3 ppm dose reduced thorax mass (but not body mass), providing the first evidence of morphological effects of Pristine®, and supporting the hypothesis that Pristine® reduces forager longevity by negatively impacting digestive or nutritional processes.

1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)-cyclohexane (DBE-DBCH) is a brominated flame retardant used in commercial and industrial applications. The use of DBE-DBCH containing products has resulted in an increased release into the environment. However, limited information is available on the long-term effects of DBE-DBCH and its effects in aquatic invertebrates. Thus, the present study was aimed at determining how DBE-DBCH diastereomers (αβ and γδ) affects aquatic invertebrates using Daphnia magna as a model organism. Survival, reproduction, feeding, swimming behavior and toxicogenomic responses to environmental relevant concentrations of DBE-DBCH were analyzed. Chronic exposure to DBE-DBCH resulted in decreased lifespan, and reduced fecundity. Expression of genes involved in reproductive processes, vtg1 and jhe, were also inhibited. DBE-DBCH also induced hypoxia by inhibiting the transcription of genes involved in heme biosynthesis and oxygen transport. Furthermore, DBE-DBCH also inhibited feeding resulting in emptiness of the alimentary canal. Increased expression of the stress response biomarkers was observed following DBE-DBCH exposure. In addition, DBE-DBCH diastereomers also altered the swimming behavior of Daphnia magna. The present study demonstrates that DBE-DBCH cause multiple deleterious effects on Daphnia magna, including effects on reproduction and hormonal systems. These endocrine disrupting effects are in agreement with effects observed on vertebrates. Furthermore, as is the case in vertebrates, DBE-DBCH γδ exerted stronger effects than DBE-DBCH αβ on Daphnia magna. This indicate that DBE-DBCH γδ has properties making it more toxic to all so far studied animals than DBE-DBCH αβ.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as extracting solvents in soil remediation. However, they can be pollutants themselves, and their own toxicities are of concerns. Notably, organisms were exposed to pollutants at random life stages in actual environmental exposure scenario, which is different from the set-up of one uniform life stage in usual experiment designs. The influence of life stages on ILs toxicities will provide essential information on their actual environmental risks. In the present study, effects of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C₂mim]Br) were measured on C. elegans with egg exposure and adult exposure. In egg exposure, [C₂mim]Br increased the lifespan, stimulated initial reproduction and inhibited the total reproduction. Biochemical indices including oxidative stress, antioxidant responses and oxidative damage were further measured to explore the toxicity mechanisms. Results showed that [C₂mim]Br significantly stimulated O₂⁻· as the oxidative stress and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as the antioxidant defense. In adult exposure, [C₂mim]Br inhibited initial reproduction, total reproduction and lifespan. Biochemical results showed that [C₂mim]Br significantly stimulated H₂O₂ and oxidized glutathione (GSSG). The overall findings demonstrated that [C₂mim]Br caused life stage-dependent toxicities on C. elegans. Future studies are still needed for the detailed mechanisms.

The honeybee has economic importance both for the commercial value of bee products and for its role in the pollination of agricultural crops. Despite the fact that the fungicides are widely used in agriculture, studies comparing the effects of this group of pesticides on bees are still scarce. There are many gaps preventing the understanding of bees’ responses to exposure to fungicides, including the influence of the age of the exposed workers. However, this study aimed to compare the effects of residual concentrations of pyraclostrobin on young and old bees of Africanized Apis mellifera. The parameters analyzed were the survival rates, as well as the histopathological and histochemical changes in midgut of orally exposed workers to different sublethal concentrations of this strobilurin fungicide: 0.125 ng a.i./μL (C1), 0.025 ng a.i./μL (C2) e 0.005 ng a.i./μL (C3). The results showed a significant decrease in the longevity only for old bees exposed to the three concentrations of pyraclostrobin. After the five-day exposure period, the fungicide induced sublethal effects in the midgut only from the old bees. These effects were the increase both in cytoplasmic vacuolization of digestive cells and morphological changes in the nests of regenerative cells, which reflected in the higher lesion index of organ for groups C1 and C2. Additionally, there was a reduction in total protein staining in the intestinal epithelium in C1 and C2. At the same exposure period, the midgut of young bees presented only a reduction in the staining of neutral polysaccharides in the group C1. Concluding, old workers are more sensitive to the fungicide than young workers. This study showed different responses according to worker age, which can affect the maintenance of colony health. Future studies should take into account the age of the workers to better understand the effects of fungicides on bees.

Health and longevity are common human goals, and environmental factors can have significant impacts on human health. This study aims to investigate the historical changes and sources of trace elements in the sediments of a typical karstic river basin with high longevity population in Hechi City, Guangxi, China and to evaluate the ecological risks of trace elements in sediments. The results showed that over the past 100 years, the contents of trace elements in the sediments were lower in the upper reaches than in the middle and lower reaches of the river. The sediments had high trace element contents in 1950–1959 and 1989–1998, while low contents appeared after 1998. These periods correspond to China’s industrial growth in the early 1950s, the Great Leap Forward movement in the late 1950s, the reform and opening-up policy implemented in the 1980s–1990s and the environmental protection policies to strengthen pollution control that have been implemented since 2000. Limestone soil and carbonate rock are the main sources of sediment in the basin. Although the geological background values of Cd and other trace elements in the basin were relatively high, the high calcium content and alkalinity of the water and sediment in the basin reduced the bioavailability of Cd and other heavy metals. The mainstream of Panyang River had a low environmental risk, but the tributary Bama River where there is dense population poses a moderate risk.
