This study aimed to evaluate the concentration of heavy metals in liquid effluents and to quantify the mercury content in dental amalgam waste generated by dental clinics. Three neighbouring cities in Northeast Algeria were considered in this study (Constantine, Skikda, and Annaba). Heavy metals, such as Hg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Ni, Mn, Cr, Cd, and Pb, were analysed in wastewater and then compared with acceptable standard values. Special attention was given to mercurybecause of its dangerous effects. The results collected indicated the presence of heavy metal contamination in dental wastewater. Heavy metal concentrations were significantly high for all heavy metals and exceeded the allowed concentrations. However, Pb and Cr were shown to have acceptable concentrations. This study highlights the possible contamination of the environment by mercury and heavy metals generated by dental clinics. This study also demonstrates an order of magnitude of the concentration of these heavy metal in a large agglomeration with a population of 2.5 million people.

Mercury (Hg) is among contaminants of public concern due to its prevalent existence, high toxicity, and bioaccumulation through food chains. Elevated Hg has been detected in seafood from the East China Sea (ECS), which is one of the largest marginal seas and an important fishing region in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the distribution of Hg species and their controlling factors in the ECS water column, thus preventing the understanding of Hg cycling and the assessment of Hg risks in the ECS. In this study, two cruises were conducted in October 2014 and June 2015 in order to investigate the distribution of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) and their controlling factors in the ECS. The concentrations of THg and MeHg were determined to be 4.2 ± 2.8 ng/L (THg) and 0.25 ± 0.13 ng/L (MeHg) in water from the ECS. The level of Hg in the ECS occupied the higher rank among the marginal seas, thus indicating significant Hg contamination in this system. Both the THg and MeHg presented complicated spatial distribution patterns in the ECS, with high concentration areas located in both the nearshore and offshore areas. Statistical analyses suggest that temperature (T) and Hg in sediment may be the controlling factors for THg distribution, while dissolved organic matter (DOM), T, and MeHg in the sediment may be the controlling factors for MeHg distribution in the seawater of the ECS. The relative importance of these environmental factors in Hg distribution depends on the water depth. T-salinity (S) diagram analyses showed that water mass mixing may also play an important role in controlling THg and MeHg distribution in the coastal ECS.

Trophic magnification factor (TMF) of persistent toxic substances (PTSs: Hg, PCBs, PAHs, and styrene oligomers (SOs)) in a coastal food web (12 fish and four invertebrates) was determined in Ulsan Bay, South Korea. The nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N) of amino acids [δ¹⁵NGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ based on glutamic acid (δ¹⁵NGₗᵤ) and phenylalanine (δ¹⁵NPₕₑ)] were used to estimate the trophic position (TPGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ) of organisms. The TPGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ of organisms ranged from 1.64 to 3.69, which was lower than TP estimated by δ¹⁵N of bulk particulate organic matter (TPBᵤₗₖ: 2.46–4.21). Mercury and CB 138, 153, 187, and 180 were biomagnified through the whole food web (TMF > 1), while other PTSs, such as PAHs and SOs were not (biodilution of SOs firstly reported). In particular, the trophic transfer of PTSs was pronounced in the resident fish (e.g., rock bream, sea perch, Korean rockfish). Of note, CB 99, 101, 118, and 183 were additionally found to be biomagnifying PTSs in these species. Thus, fish residency appears to represent an important factor in determining the TMF of PTSs in the coastal environment. Overall, δ¹⁵NGₗᵤ₋Pₕₑ provided accurate TPs of organisms and could be applied to determine the trophic transfer of PTSs in coastal food webs.

Eating fish provides numerous health benefits, but it is also a dominant pathway for human exposure to contaminants. Many studies have examined mercury (Hg) accumulation in fish, but fewer have considered other elements, such as arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr). Recently, freshwater fish from several pristine boreal systems across northern Ontario, Canada, have been reported with elevated concentrations of As and Cr for reasons that are not well understood. Our goal was to investigate the ecological and environmental influences over concentrations of As, Cr, and other elements in these fish to better understand what affects metal uptake and the risk to consumers. We measured 10 elements (including As, Cr, Hg) as well as carbon (δ¹³C), nitrogen (δ¹⁵N), and sulfur (δ³⁴S) stable isotopes in 388 fish from 25 lake and river sites across this remote region. These data were used to determine the effect of: 1) trophic ecology; and 2) watershed geology on piscine elemental content. Overall, most element concentrations were low, often below provincial advisory benchmarks (ABs). However, traces of Hg, As, Cr, and selenium (Se) were detected in most fish. Based on their exceedance of their respective ABs, the most restrictive elements on fish consumption in these boreal systems were Hg > As > Cr. Arsenic and Se, but not Cr concentrations were related to fish size and trophic ecology (inferred from δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N), suggesting bioaccumulation of the former elements. Fish with enriched δ³⁴S values, suggestive of anadromous behaviour, had marginally lower Hg but higher Se concentrations. Modeling results suggested a strong effect of site-specific factors, though we found weak trends between piscine elemental content and geological features (e.g., mafic intrusions), potentially due to the broad spatial scale of this study. Results from this study address gaps in our understanding of As and Cr bioaccumulation and will help to inform fish consumption guidelines.

Potential toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) in road dust are a major concern in relation to urban environmental quality. Identifying pollution hotspots and sources of PTMs is an essential prerequisite for pollution control and management. Herein, the concentrations, pollution and potential health risks of 8 PTMs (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mo, Pb and Zn) in road dust from the highly urbanized areas of Nanjing were studied. Spatial occurrences and sources of PTMs were explored using geostatistics, principal component analysis (PCA) and local Moran’s index. The contamination factor (CF) results showed that Co was mainly natural in origin, while the other PTMs were polluted, with average CFs ranging from 1.4 to 11.0 as follows: Hg > Mo > Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > As, indicating moderate to very high contamination. Except for Co and Hg, the other PTMs were heavily loaded on PC1, which explained 44.72% of the total variance. Combining the statistical results and distributions of potential sources, we deduced that industrial emissions dominated the spatial patterns of all polluted PTMs in road dust, which showed high levels in the northern parts of the study region and generally decreasing levels southwards. Moreover, Pb and Zn in the south-central area and Cd in the north-central area displayed hotspots, with maximum CFs of 5.5 (Pb), 4.2 (Zn) and 16.2 (Cd), which were related to additional automotive and railway braking emissions, respectively. The resuspension of legacy pesticides in soil is likely responsible for the As pollution hotspot in the southwestern part. Despite the high anthropogenic contributions (27% for As and 68–88% for the other metals) to the PTMs in road dust, their noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks were rarely found for children and adults based on the values of the hazard index and carcinogenic risk index. However, attention still should be paid to the pollution hotspots in the northern region.

Diet is an important route of mercury (Hg) uptake in marine organisms. Trophic transfer of Hg throughout the food webs may be influenced by various factors, including diet and Hg speciation. Bivalves such as oysters are widely used as bioindicators of trace element pollution such as Hg. Nevertheless, our current knowledge regarding their ability to accumulate Hg from their diet is mainly based on experiments performed using phytoplankton. In their natural environment, oysters feed on a variety of food items including ciliates, detritus, in addition to phytoplankton. The present study aimed at examining the influence of diet composition on the trophic transfer of inorganic Hg (iHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. The pulse-chase feeding method was used with two radiolabeled food items: a heterotrophic protist (Uronema marinum) and a phytoplanktonic diatom (Thalassiosira pseudonana). Depuration of dietary Hg in the oysters was followed for 50 d. Kinetic parameters including assimilation efficiency (AE) and efflux rate constant (kₑ) were calculated. Our results showed that oysters fed on ciliates assimilated 96 ± 1% and 31 ± 2% of the ingested MeHg and iHg, respectively whereas these elements were similarly assimilated in the oysters fed on phytoplankton (78 ± 3% and 86 ± 4% for MeHg and iHg, respectively). Mercury assimilation in oyster is thus diet dependent (significant differences in AE, p < 0.05), metal species-dependent and likely resulting from variations in Hg bioavailability in the two food items tested and a gut passage time-dependent of the ingested matrix.

The increased occurrence of Mercury (Hg II) contaminant has caused environmental and health concerns worldwide. Removal of Hg(II) from water is of significant interest, in particular if these can be coupled in a manner of detection. Here, a novel activated carbon (AC) adsorbent and a fast detection device to form a closed-cycle strategy was developed. The synthesis of conjugates of streptavidin-biotinylated DNA probes modified gold nanoparticle was used with lateral flow biosensors for Hg(II) detection. A quantification was completed via a self-developed smartphone app and its limit of detection was 2.53 nM. Moreover, AC was activated with a new activating agent of diammonium hydrogen phosphate. The adsorbent was characterized and determined to have an amorphous microporous structure with a high surface area (1076.5 m² g⁻¹) and demonstrated excellent removal efficiency (99.99%) and adsorption capacity (∼100 mg g⁻¹) for Hg(II). The kinetics of the pseudo-second-order model and the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, and complex reactions are provided. The proposed closed-cycle strategy can be useful for early, fast, and mobile detection of Hg (II) pollution, followed by its effective removal during water treatment.

The concentration and isotopic composition of mercury (Hg) were studied in frozen soils along a southwest-northeast transect over the Himalaya-Tibet. Soil total Hg (HgT) concentrations were significantly higher in the southern slopes (72 ± 54 ng g−1, 2SD, n = 21) than those in the northern slopes (43 ± 26 ng g−1, 2SD, n = 10) of Himalaya-Tibet. No significant relationship was observed between HgT concentrations and soil organic carbon (SOC), indicating that the HgT variation was not governed by SOC. Soil from the southern slopes showed significantly negative mean δ202Hg (−0.53 ± 0.50‰, 2SD, n = 21) relative to those from the northern slopes (−0.12 ± 0.40‰, 2SD, n = 10). The δ202Hg values of the southern slopes are more similar to South Asian anthropogenic Hg emissions. A significant correlation between 1/HgT and δ202Hg was observed in all the soil samples, further suggesting a mixing of Hg from South Asian anthropogenic emissions and natural geochemical background. Large ranges of Δ199Hg (−0.45 and 0.24‰) were observed in frozen soils. Most of soil samples displayed negative Δ199Hg values, implying they mainly received Hg from gaseous Hg(0) deposition. A few samples had slightly positive odd-MIF, indicating precipitation-sourced Hg was more prevalent than gaseous Hg(0) in certain areas. The spatial distribution patterns of HgT concentrations and Hg isotopes indicated that Himalaya-Tibet, even its northern part, may have been influenced by transboundary atmospheric Hg pollution from South Asia.

The understanding for the impact of petrochemical pollutants exposure on renal functions is limited.Our study examined the associations between renal functions and pollutants exposure in adult residents living in the vicinity of a petrochemical industry.We recruited 2069 adult residents near a big petrochemical complex in Taiwan in 2009–2012, and they were categorized into high exposure (HE) and low exposure (LE) groups based on their address to source by 10 km radius. Study subjects were measured the urinary levels of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, thallium, and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP). The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Taiwanese Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation, and the chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence and risks were defined according to KDIGO 2012 guidelines. Adjusted generalized linear and logistic regression models were applied to evaluate the associations between petrochemical exposure and renal functions.Subjects in the HE areas had significantly lower eGFR, higher CKD prevalence, and higher levels of urinary arsenic, cadmium, mercury, thallium and 1-OHP. The closer to complex and high exposure group of study subjects were significantly associated with the decrease in eGFR, higher ORs for CKD and high-intermediate risk of CKD. In addition, the study subjects who had two-fold urinary arsenic and 1-OHP levels were significantly with decreased 0.68 and 0.49 ml/min/1.73 m2 of eGFR, respectively.Residing closer and higher arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure were associated with the renal impairment and risks of CKD among the residential population near the petrochemical industry.

Human-induced temperature changes influence coastal regions, both via thermal pollution and ocean warming, which exerts profound effects on the chemistry of metals and the physiology of organisms. However, it remains unknown whether the increased temperature of discharged water or ocean warming, as a result of climate change, lead to an increase of human health risks associated with the consumption of sea foods. In this study, the influence of temperature on metal accumulation by oysters was studied in individuals collected from a coastal area affected by the thermal water discharge of the Houshi Power Plant, China. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and oral bioavailability (OBA) of metals in oysters was determined. Elevated temperatures led to an increase in BAF for Cu, Zn, Hg, and Cd (p < 0.05), but no change was observed for As and Pb (p > 0.05). The OBA for Cd, As, and Pb correlated positively to elevated temperatures (p < 0.05). However, for Cu and Zn, OBA was negatively correlated with increasing temperature (p < 0.05). As, Pb, and Cd in the trophically available metal (defined as a sum of heat-stable proteins, heat-denaturable proteins, and organelles) was significantly elevated at the highest temperature seawater site (site A) compared to the lowest seawater site (site B). Thus, the irregular variation of OBA for each metal may be the result of variations in the subcellular distribution of metals and the protein quality influenced by the increased temperature. Moreover, the increased temperature and increased the hazard quotient values of As and Cd (p < 0.05 for As, n = 6, p < 0.05 for Cd, n = 6), which provided an indication of the potential risks of the consumption of oysters or other seafood to future warming under climate change scenarios.
