International audience | Studies integrating trophic ecology, physiological condition and accumulation of heavy metals in top predators, such as swordfish, are needed to better understand the links between them and the risk to humans associated with consumption of these fish. This research focuses on the swordfish of the Catalan Sea and follows a multi method approach that considers their diet, their liver lipid content, and mercury accumulation in their bodies as well as in their prey. The aim is to highlight the links between trophic ecology, physiology (fish condition), and ecotoxicology. Results indicate that poor condition of swordfish based on size and the levels of lipid in the liver, and the high Hg levels accumulated to the trophic web (particularly from cephalopods) may indicate potential unfavourable feeding and reproduction conditions for swordfish in the NW Mediterranean and that this warrants further investigation.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic trace element widely distributed in the environment, which particularly accumulates in top predators, including seabirds. Among seabirds, large gulls (Larus sp) are generalist feeders, foraging in both terrestrial and marine habitats, making them relevant bioindicators of local coastal Hg contamination. In the present study, we reported blood Hg concentrations in adults and chicks of four different gull species breeding on the French Atlantic coast: the European herring gull (Larus argentatus), the Lesser black-backed gull (L. fuscus), the Great black-backed gull (L. marinus) and the Yellow-legged gull (L. michahellis). We also investigated the potential role of foraging ecology in shaping Hg contamination across species, using the unique combination of three dietary tracers (carbon, nitrogen and sulfur stable isotopes) and biologging (GPS tracking). A high concentration of Hg was associated with high trophic position and a marine diet in gulls, which was corroborated by birds’ space use strategy during foraging trips. Adults of all four species reached Hg concentrations above reported toxicity thresholds. Specifically, adults of Great black-backed gulls had a high trophic marine specialized diet and significantly higher Hg concentrations than the three other species. Blood Hg was 4–7 times higher in adults than in chicks, although chicks of all species received mainly marine and high trophic position prey, which is expected to be the cause of blood Hg concentrations of toxic concern. By using both stable isotopes and GPS tracking, the present study provides compelling insights on the main feeding habits driving Hg contamination in a seabird assemblage feeding in complex coastal environments.

Forest management can alter the mobilization of mercury (Hg) into headwater streams and its conversion to methylmercury (MeHg), the form that bioaccumulates in aquatic biota and biomagnifies through food webs. As headwater streams are important sources of organic materials and nutrients to larger systems, this connectivity may also increase MeHg in downstream biota through direct or indirect effects of forestry on water quality or food web structure. In this study, we collected water, seston, food sources (biofilm, leaves, organic matter), five macroinvertebrate taxa and fish (slimy sculpin; Cottus cognata) at 6 sites representing different stream orders (1–5) within three river basins with different total disturbances from forestry (both harvesting and silviculture). Methylmercury levels were highest in water and some food sources from the basin with moderate disturbance (greater clearcutting but less silviculture). Water, leaves, stoneflies and fish increased in MeHg or total Hg along the river continuum in the least disturbed basin, and there were some dissipative effects of forest management on these spatial patterns. Trophic level (δ¹⁵N) was a significant predictor of MeHg (and total Hg in fish) within food webs across all 18 sites, and biomagnification slopes were significantly lower in the basin with moderate total disturbance but not different in the other two basins. The elevated MeHg in lower trophic levels but its reduced trophic transfer in the basin with moderate disturbance was likely due to greater inputs of sediments and of dissolved organic carbon that is more humic, as these factors are known to both increase transport of Hg to streams and its uptake in primary producers but to also decrease MeHg bioaccumulation in consumers. Overall, these results suggest that the type of disturbance from forestry affects MeHg bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in stream food webs and some longitudinal patterns along a river continuum.

Both inorganic and organic fertilizers are widely used to increase rice yield. However, these fertilizers are also found to aggravate mercury methylation and methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in paddy fields. The aim of this study was to reveal the mechanisms of inorganic and organic fertilizers on MeHg accumulation in rice grains, which are not yet well understood. Potting cultures were conducted in which different fertilizers were applied to a paddy soil. The results showed that both inorganic and organic fertilizers increased MeHg concentrations rather than biological accumulation factors (BAFs) of MeHg in mature rice grains. Inorganic fertilizers, especially nitrogen fertilizer, enhanced the bioavailability of mercury and the relative amount Hg-methylating microbes and therefore intensified mercury methylation in paddy soil and MeHg accumulation in rice grains. Unlike inorganic fertilizers, organic matter (OM) in organic fertilizers was the main reason for the increase of MeHg concentrations in rice grains, and it also could immobilize Hg in soil when it was deeply degraded. The enhancement of MeHg concentrations in rice grains induced by inorganic fertilizers (5.18–41.69%) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that induced by organic fertilizers (80.49–106.86%). Inorganic fertilizers led to a larger increase (50.39–99.28%) in thousand-kernel weight than MeHg concentrations (5.18–41.69%), resulting in a dilution of MeHg concentrations in mature rice grains. Given the improvement of soil properties by organic fertilizer, increasing the proportion of inorganic fertilizer application may be a better option to alleviate MeHg accumulation in rice grains and guarantee the rice yield in the agricultural production.

Salt marsh estuaries serve as sources and sinks for nutrients and elements to and from estuarine water, which enhances and alleviates watershed fluxes to the coastal ocean. We assessed sources and sinks of mercury in the intertidal Plum Island Sound estuary in Massachusetts, the largest salt marsh estuary of New England, using 25-km spatial water sampling transects. Across all seasons, dissolved (FHg) and total (THg) mercury concentrations in estuarine water were highest and strongly enhanced in upper marshes (1.31 ± 0.20 ng L⁻¹ and 6.56 ± 3.70 ng L⁻¹, respectively), compared to riverine Hg concentrations (0.86 ± 0.17 ng L⁻¹ and 0.88 ± 0.34 ng L⁻¹, respectively). Mercury concentrations declined from upper to lower marshes and were lowest in ocean water (0.38 ± 0.10 ng L⁻¹ and 0.56 ± 0.25 ng L⁻¹, respectively). Conservative mixing models using river and ocean water as endmembers indicated that internal estuarine Hg sources strongly enhanced estuarine water Hg concentrations. For FHg, internal estuarine Hg contributions were estimated at 26 g yr⁻¹ which enhanced Hg loads from riverine sources to the ocean by 44%. For THg, internal sources amounted to 251 g yr⁻¹ and exceeded riverine sources six-fold. Proposed sources for internal estuarine mercury contributions include atmospheric deposition to the large estuarine surface area and sediment re-mobilization, although sediment Hg concentrations were low (average 23 ± 2 μg kg⁻¹) typical of uncontaminated sediments. Soil mercury concentrations under vegetation, however, were ten times higher (average 200 ± 225 μg kg⁻¹) than in intertidal sediments suggesting that high soil Hg accumulation might drive lateral export of Hg to the ocean. Spatial transects of methylated Hg (MeHg) showed no concentration enhancements in estuarine water and no indication of internal MeHg sources or formation. Initial mass balance considerations suggest that atmospheric deposition may either be in similar magnitude, or possibly exceed lateral tidal export which would be consistent with strong Hg accumulation observed in salt marsh soils sequestering Hg from current and past atmospheric deposition.

The fetus is prenatally exposed to a mixture of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), mercury (Hg), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and selenium (Se) through maternal seafood consumption in real-life scenario. Prenatal exposure to these contaminants and nutrients has been suggested to affect thyroid hormone (TH) status in newborns, but the potential relationships between them are unclear and the joint effects of the mixture are seldom analyzed. The aim of the study is to investigate the associations of prenatal exposure to a mixture of OCPs, Hg, DHA, EPA and Se with TH parameters in newborns. 228 mother-infant pairs in Shanghai, China were included. We measured 20 OCPs, total Hg, DHA, EPA and Se in cord blood samples as exposure variables. The total thyroxine (TT4), free thyroxine (FT4), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and the FT3/FT4 ratio in cord serum were determined as outcomes. Using linear regression models, generalized additive models and Bayesian kernel machine regression, we found dose-response relationships of the mixture component with outcomes: among the contaminants, p,p'-DDE was the most important positive predictor of TT3, while HCB was predominantly positively associated with FT3 and the FT3/FT4 ratio, indicating different mechanisms underlying these relationships; among the nutrients, EPA was first found to be positively related to the FT3/FT4 ratio. Additionally, we found suggestive evidence of interactions between p,p'-DDE and HCB on both TT3 and FT3, and EPA by HCB interactions for TT3, FT3 and FT3/FT4 ratio. However, the overall effects of the mixture on thyroid hormone parameters were not significant. Our result suggests that prenatal exposure to p,p’-DDE, HCB and EPA as part of a mixture might affect thyroid function of newborns in independent and interactive ways. The potential biological mechanisms merit further investigation.

Rice consumption is the major pathway for human methylmercury (MeHg) exposure in inland China, especially in mercury (Hg) contaminated regions. MeHg production, a microbially driven process, depends on both the chemical speciation of inorganic divalent mercury, Hg(II), that determines Hg bioavailability for methylation. Studies have shown that Hg(II) speciation in contaminated paddy soils is mostly controlled by natural organic matter and sulfide levels, which are typically thought to limit Hg mobility and bioavailability. Yet, high levels of MeHg are found in rice, calling for reconsideration of the nature of Hg species bioavailable to methylators in paddy soils. Here, we conducted incubation experiments using a multi-isotope tracer technique including ¹⁹⁸Hg(NO₃)₂, natural organic matter bond Hg(II) (NOM-¹⁹⁹Hg(II)), ferrous sulfide sorbed Hg(II) (≡FeS-²⁰⁰Hg(II)), and nanoparticulate mercuric sulfide (nano-²⁰²HgS), to investigate the relative importance of geochemically diverse yet relevant Hg(II) species on Hg methylation in paddy soils across a Hg concentration gradient. We show that methylation rates for all Hg(II) species tested decreased with increasing Hg concentrations, and that methylation rates using NOM-¹⁹⁹Hg(II) and nano-²⁰²HgS as substrates were similar or greater than rates obtained using the labile ¹⁹⁸Hg(NO₃)₂ substrate. ≡FeS-²⁰⁰Hg(II) yielded the lowest methylation rate in all sites, and thus the formation of FeS is likely a sink for labile ¹⁹⁸Hg(NO₃)₂ in sulfide-rich paddy soils. Moreover, the variability in the methylation data for a given site (1 to 5-fold variation depending on the Hg species) was smaller than what was observed across the Hg concentration gradient (10³–10⁴ fold variation between sites). These findings emphasize that at broad spatial scales, site-specific characteristics, such as microbial community structure, need to be taken into consideration, alongside the nature of the Hg substrate available for methylation, to determine net MeHg production. This study highlights the importance of developing site-specific strategies for remediating Hg pollution.

The toxicity of nano-sized particles of mercury (NP–Hg), which are thought to be generated during the detoxification of methyl mercury (MeHg), may differ from that of MeHg, elemental Hg (Hg⁰), and inorganic Hg (I–Hg). From a human health perspective, it is important to evaluate the presence of NP-Hg in seafoods. We investigated the in vivo formation of NP-Hg in fish and shellfish, which are the main sources of Hg exposure in humans. NP-Hg was measured in 90 fish samples with single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) after enzyme degradation with pancreatin and lipase. In addition to NP-Hg, total Hg (T-Hg), MeHg, and selenium (Se) concentrations were evaluated. Transient Hg signals were detected as nanoparticles from almost all samples by using spICP-MS. Higher particle number concentrations (CPN) were observed in the tuna–swordfish group than in the shellfish group (17.7 × 10⁷ vs. 1.2 × 10⁶ particles/g, respectively). Although the CPN and maximum particle mass increased significantly with increasing T-Hg concentration, the increase in CPN was greater than those in maximum particle mass. Assuming that the NP-Hg detected was HgSe (tiemannite) and spherical based on previous reports, the maximum particle diameter was estimated to be 89 nm. The mean dietary exposures to NP-Hg, T-Hg, and MeHg were estimated to be 0.067, 5.75, and 5.32 μg/person per day, respectively. Generation of NP-Hg was inferred to be widespread in marine animals, with a preferential increase in the number of particles rather than an increase in particle size. The mean dietary exposure to NP-Hg in Japanese people was estimated to be 1.2 ng/kg body weight (BW) per day. Compared to PTWI of 4 μg/kg BW per week (0.57 μg/kg BW per day) derived by JECFA (2011), the health risk from redissolved I–Hg from NP-Hg is small.

We aimed to explore the effects of mixtures of lead and various metals on blood pressure (BP) and the odds of pre-hypertension (systolic blood pressure (SBP) 120–139 mmHg, and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 80–89 mmHg) and hypertension (SBP/DBP ≥140/90 mmHg) among Chinese adults in a cross-sectional study. This study included 11,037 adults aged 18 years or older from the 2017–2018 China National Human Biomonitoring. Average BP and 13 metals (lead, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, thallium, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, selenium, and tin) in blood and urine were measured and lifestyle and demographic data were collected. Weighted multiple linear regressions were used to estimate associations of metals with BP in both single and multiple metal models. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was performed to assess the relationship between metal mixture levels and BP. In the single metal model, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the blood lead levels in the highest quartile were associated with the greater odds of both pre-hypertension (odds ratio (OR): 1.56, 95% CI: 1.22–1.99) and hypertension (OR:1.75, 95% CI: 1.28–2.40) when compared with the lowest quartile. We also found that blood arsenic levels were associated with increased odds of pre-hypertension (OR:1.31, 95% CI:1.00–1.74), while urinary molybdenum levels were associated with lower odds of hypertension (OR:0.68, 95% CI:0.50–0.93). No significant associations were found for the other 10 metals. WQS regression analysis showed that metal mixture levels in blood were significantly associated with higher SBP (β = 1.56, P < 0.05) and DBP (β = 1.56, P < 0.05), with the largest contributor being lead (49.9% and 66.8%, respectively). The finding suggests that exposure to mixtures of metals as measured in blood were positively associated with BP, and that lead exposure may play a critical role in hypertension development.

Sea fish contain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) which have been found to reduce triglyceride (TG) levels. However, sea fish may contain pollutants such as mercury which cause oxidative stress and increase TG levels. Therefore, the relationship between sea fish and TG remains unclear. We aimed to explore whether blood mercury (BHg) can affect the effect of sea fish consumption frequency on TG level among Chinese adults. A total of 10,780 participants were included in this study. BHg levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The associations of sea fish consumption frequency with BHg and TG levels as well as the association of BHg with TG levels were evaluated using multiple linear regression. Causal mediation analysis was used to evaluate the mediation effect of BHg levels on the association of sea fish consumption frequency with TG levels. The frequency of sea fish consumption showed a negative association with TG level. Compared with the participants who never ate sea fish, the TG level decreased by 0.193 mmol/L in those who ate sea fish once a week or more [β (95%CI): −0.193 (−0.370, −0.015)]. Significant positive associations were observed of BHg with TG levels. With one unit increase of log2-transformed BHg, the change of TG level was 0.030 mmol/L [0.030 (0.009, 0.051)]. The association between sea fish consumption and TG was mediated by log2-transformed BHg [total effect = −0.037 (−0.074, −0.001); indirect effect = 0.009 (0.004, 0.015)], and the proportion mediated by log2-transformed BHg was 24.25%. BHg may reduce the beneficial effect of sea fish consumption frequency on TG levels among Chinese adults. Overall, sea fish consumption has more benefits than harms to TG.
