Hg concentrations and related risk assessment in coral reef crustaceans, molluscs and fish from New Caledonia

There is a dramatic lack of data on Hg levels in marine organisms from tropical areas, and in particular from New Caledonia. For the first time, this study reports the total Hg concentrations in the tissues of several marine taxa from the New Caledonian lagoon. Seafood from both wild and farmed populations was considered. Hg concentrations varied over three orders of magnitudes according to factors including species, age (size/weight), trophic level, lifestyle and geographical origin. Taking into account the edible tissues, estimations of the amount of flesh that should be consumed by a 60-kg person to reach the Hg Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) reveal acceptable risk for Human health in general. However, a risk was clearly identified in one site of the lagoon (i.e. Grande Rade) where high Hg concentrations were measured. These concentrations were higher than values reported in the current literature. This work reports the first assessment of Hg levels in edible organisms from the New Caledonian lagoon and the associated risk linked to their consumption by Human.

Metallurgical industries remain a considerable source of trace element contamination and potential human health risk. Determination of sources is a key challenge. With respect to the South Pacific's largest and longest operating metallurgic smelter in Nouméa, New Caledonia, determining the environmental impact and subsequent human health risk associated with local ferronickel smelting is complicated by natural geological enrichment of Ni and Cr. This study applies a multi-method and multi-matrix approach to disentangle smelter emissions from geogenic sources and model the consequent health risk from industrial activity. Dust wipes (n = 108), roadside soil (n = 91), garden soil (n = 15) and household vacuum dust (n = 39) were assessed to explore geospatial trace element (As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, S, V and Zn) variations across outdoor and indoor environments. Enrichment factors (EF) identified elevated levels of smelter-related trace elements: S (EF = 7), Ni (EF = 6) and Cr (EF = 4), as well as Zn (EF = 4). Smelter-related elements in soil and dust deposits were negatively correlated with distance from the facility. Similarity of Pb isotopic compositions between dust wipes, surface soil and vacuum dust indicated that potentially toxic trace elements are being tracked into homes. Non-carcinogenic health risk modelling (Hazard Index, HI) based on 15 spatial nodes across Nouméa revealed widespread exceedance of tolerable risk for children (0–2 years) for Ni (HI 1.3–15.8) and Mn (HI 0.6–1.8). Risk was greatest near the smelter and to the north-west, in the direction of prevailing wind. Given the elevated cancer risk documented in New Caledonia, disentanglement of environmental from industrial sources warrants further attention to ensure community health protection. Our analysis illustrates how the confounding effects from complex environmental factors can be distilled to improve the accuracy of point source apportionment to direct future mitigation strategies.

Uptake of waterborne Cd, Co, Mn and Zn was determined in laboratory experiments using radiotracer techniques (109Cd, 57Co, 54Mn and 65Zn). Labelled Zn was mainly accumulated in the digestive gland (65%) and Co in kidneys (81%); Cd and Mn were similarly distributed in digestive gland and gills. In a complementary field study, Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn were analysed in scallops collected at two stations showing different contamination levels. Digestive gland and kidneys displayed the highest concentrations. Ag, As, Cd, and Fe differed in soft tissues from the two stations, suggesting that Comptopallium radula could be a valuable local biomonitor species for these elements. Low Mn and Zn concentrations found in kidneys suggest that their content in calcium-phosphate concretions differs from the other pectinids. Preliminary risk considerations suggest that As would be the only element potentially leading to exposure of concern for seafood consumers. This study investigates metal accumulation behaviour in the tropical scallop Comptopallium radula and preliminary risk assessment for consumers.

Green tides occurrence has increased in coral reefs, yet few reference values have been documented to support bloom management in these ecosystems. Here, we took advantage of recent Ulva green tides that occurred in New Caledonia to (i) identify the elements limiting the growth of Ulva spp. during these blooms; and (ii) validate the use of isotopic markers for identifying sources of nutrients that generated blooms. N/P ratios highlighted a stronger limitation of algae by phosphorus than by nitrogen on sites under oceanic influence, while the proportions of N and P were optimal for algal growth at sites where green tides occurred. Macroalgae highly exposed to sewage water was characterized by higher δ15N than macroalgae collected in areas exposed to synthetic inorganic fertilizers. From these results, we established a new set of threshold values for using δ15N in Ulva species as an indicator of nitrogen source type in coral reefs.

Trace metal dynamics were investigated in mangroves developing in semi-arid New Caledonia, where Avicennia and Rhizophora stands grow in the upper and lower intertidal zone, respectively. We collected soil samples and mangrove tissues in an undisturbed site, a mining-influenced site and in a mining and aquaculture-influenced site. Differences in duration of immersion and organic matter (OM) cycling resulted in a sharp decrease of metal concentrations in soils and plants from landside to seaside. Both species were tolerant to metals mainly via exclusion, (i.e. metal bioaccumulation restricted to roots and leaf litter). Strong correlations (p < 0.05) were found between Na and Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in green and senesced leaves of Avicennia marina, indicating a possible role of those metals in mechanisms to cope with hypersaline conditions.Increasing metal pollution, aridity and sea-level rise are likely to result in a decrease in mangrove efficiency in filtering trace metals seaward.

The accumulation of plastic pollutants in marine environments has many adverse effects on wildlife. In particular, marine predators are often exposed to accidental plastic ingestion, that may negatively affect survival due to the concentration of debris in the digestive tract. Among the species most vulnerable to plastic ingestion, seabirds are of major interest for conservation because of their wide foraging areas, long generation time and extended lifespan. We analysed stomach contents of 90 seabird specimens from 12 different species collected in New Caledonia to assess the local prevalence of plastic ingestion. Overall, we found plastic debris in 14.4% of sampled individuals, exclusively in procellariids: Gould's Petrel (41.2%, highest incidence), Tahiti Petrel (33.3%) and Wedge-tailed Shearwater (7.7%). To our knowledge, this study is the first characterization of plastic ingestion in seabirds from New Caledonia and our results show an overall lower ingestion prevalence compared to other assessments in the tropical Pacific.

We report here an interannual survey (2006–2012) of coral cover in the northwestern lagoon of New Caledonia, to assess the impact of an important dredging operation (August 2008–February 2010) associated with the construction of the largest nickel mining site in the Pacific. A BACI (Before-After Control-Impact) analysis failed to detect any significant interaction between period (before, during, and after dredging) and the category of the stations (impact vs. control). Among the 31 stations surveyed, only seven showed decreasing coral cover during the study period, mainly due to a decline in Acroporidae. However, the relationship between the dredging and this decrease was highly plausible only for one station, situated 0.9km from the dredging site. High hydrodynamism in the study area, the abundance of resistant corals and efficient protective measures during the dredging operation might explain these localised and limited impacts.

Monitoring ecological variables is mandatory to detect abnormal changes in ecosystems. When the studied variables exceed predefined alert thresholds, management actions may be required. In the past, alert thresholds have been typically defined by expert judgments and descriptive statistics. Recently, approaches based on statistical power were also used. In New Caledonia, seagrass monitoring is a priority given their vulnerability to natural and anthropic disturbances. To define a suitable monitoring strategy and alert thresholds, we compared a Percentile Based Approach (PBA) and a sensitivity analysis of power (SAP). Both methods defined statistically relevant alert thresholds, but the SAP approach was more robust to spatial and temporal variability of seagrass cover. Moreover, this method characterized the sensitivity of threshold values to sampling efforts, a useful knowledge for managers.

In view of increasing environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation, understanding the main forcing mechanism driving biogeochemical cycles in coral reefs and lagoon coastal areas is a priority. La Niña events cause unbalanced situations in the Equatorial Pacific and result in enhanced precipitation in South West Pacific coastal areas. We investigated the impact of heavy rainfalls during the 2008 La Niña event on the New Caledonia lagoon using a 3D coupled on-line hydrodynamic–biogeochemical model. Simulations and data showed that the whole lagoon was impacted by river inputs and stronger hydrodynamics, enhancing chlorophyll-a concentration by a factor between 1.7 and 1.9. The coupled model provided new insights into plume transport, highlighting that eastern plumes can be advected northwards or can reach the South West Lagoon, depending on the balance between regional, tide-induced, and wind-induced surface currents. It also provided a synoptic view of lagoon biogeochemical–hydrodynamic response, when remote sensing data are not available due to cloud coverage.

In New Caledonia, shrimp ponds are built not on cleared mangroves but on salt flats behind the mangroves. The objectives of this study were to determine the variability of CO2 fluxes from a semi-intensive shrimp pond during active and non-active periods of the farm and to determine the carbon dynamics from the upstream tidal creek to the downstream creek, which receives the farm's effluents. CO2 emissions from the active pond were estimated at 11.1 ± 5.26 mmol CO2 m−2 d−1. By modifying the hydrodynamics of the creeks, farm practices also influenced CO2 emissions from both the upstream and downstream creeks. After tillage, all the organic carbon deposited at the pond bottom during the active period was mineralized, resulting in CO2 emissions to the atmosphere estimated at 7.9 TCO2 ha−1. Therefore, shrimp farming is an anthropogenic source of CO2 to the atmosphere, but suitable and optimized rearing practices limit these emissions.
