Photoaging is an important reaction for waste plastics in the aquatic environment and plays a key role in the lifetime of plastics. Nevertheless, when natural photosensitive substances such as nitrate participate in this process, the physiochemical changes in plastics and the corresponding reaction mechanisms are not well-understood. In this work, the photochemical behavior of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in deionized water and nitrate solution was systematically investigated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The analyses of the surface physicochemical properties of the photoaged PET bottles indicated that, after 20 days of photo-irradiation, the presence of nitrate reduced the contact angle from 69.8 ± 0.9° to 60.0 ± 0.3°, and increased the O/C ratio from 0.23 to 0.32, respectively. The leaching rate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which was 0.0193 mg g⁻¹·day⁻¹ in nitrate solution, was twice that of 0.00941 mg g⁻¹·day⁻¹ in deionized water. Furthermore, fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that the increasing DOC had aromatic rings with hydroxyl on the side-chain formed after UV irradiation. The positive effect of nitrate on the degradation of PET bottles was mainly through the generation of hydroxyl radicals that were produced through the photolysis of nitrate. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis showed that the chain scission of PET plastics could be initiated by nitrate-induced ·OH attacking the carbon-oxygen bonds instead of forming peroxides with oxygen. This work elucidates the mechanism of photodegradation of plastics that was induced by nitrate and highlights the important role of natural photosensitive substances in the photoaging process of plastics.

Hourly PM₂.₅ speciation data have been widely used as an input of positive matrix factorization (PMF) model to apportion PM₂.₅ components to specific source-related factors. However, the influence of constant source profile presumption during the observation period is less investigated. In the current work, hourly concentrations of PM₂.₅ water-soluble inorganic ions, bulk organic and elemental carbon, and elements were obtained at an urban site in Nanjing, China from 2017 to 2020. PMF analysis based on observation data during specific pollution (firework combustion, sandstorm, and winter haze) and emission-reduction (COVID-19 pandemic) periods was compared with that using the whole 4-year data set (PMFwₕₒₗₑ). Due to the lack of data variability, event-based PMF solutions did not separate secondary sulfate and nitrate. But they showed better performance in simulating average concentrations and temporal variations of input species, particularly for primary source markers, than the PMFwₕₒₗₑ solution. After removing event data, PMF modeling was conducted for individual months (PMFₘₒₙₜₕ) and the 4-year period (PMF₄₋yₑₐᵣ), respectively. PMFₘₒₙₜₕ solutions reflected varied source profiles and contributions and reproduced monthly variations of input species better than the PMF₄₋yₑₐᵣ solution, but failed to capture seasonal patterns of secondary salts. Additionally, four winter pollution days were selected for hour-by-hour PMF simulations, and three sample sizes (500, 1000, and 2000) were tested using a moving window method. The results showed that using short-term observation data performed better in reflecting immediate changes in primary sources, which will benefit future air quality control when primary PM emissions begin to increase.

Biochemical oxidation and reduction are key processes in treating biological wastewater and they require the presence of electron acceptors. The functional impact of electron acceptors on microbiomes provides strategies for improving the treatment efficiency. This research focused on two of the most important electron acceptors, nitrate and oxygen. Molecule ecological network, null model, and functional prediction based on high-throughput sequencing were used to analyze the microbiomes features and assembly mechanism. The results revealed nitrate via the homogeneous selection (74.0%) decreased species diversity, while oxygen via the homogeneous selection (51.1%) and dispersal limitation (29.6%) increased the complexity of community structure. Microbes that were more strongly homogeneously selected for assembly included polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs), such as Pseudomonas and variovorax in the nitrate impacted community; Pseudomonas, Candidatus_Accumulibacter, Thermomonas and Dechloromonas, in the oxygen impacted community. Nitrate simplified species interaction and increased the abundance of functional genes involving in tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle), electron transfer, nitrogen metabolism, and membrane transport. These findings contribute to our knowledge of assembly process and interactions among microorganisms and lay a theoretical basis for future microbial regulation strategies in wastewater treatment.

We aimed to investigate the associations between chemical mixtures and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in this study. A total of 127 exposure analytes within 13 chemical mixture groups were included in the current analysis. Associations between chemical mixture exposure and prevalence of NAFLD were examined using weighted quantile sum (WQS) regressions. NAFLD was diagnosed by hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and US fatty liver index (USFLI). In USFLI-NAFLD cohort, chemical mixtures positively associated with NAFLD development included urinary metals (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04–1.16), urinary perchlorate, nitrate and thiocyanate (OR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02–1.11), urinary pesticides (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.09–1.40), urinary phthalates (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.09–1.28), urinary polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.03–1.14), and urinary pyrethroids, herbicides, and organophosphate pesticides metabolites (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.15–1.51). All of the above mixtures were also statistically significant in WQS regressions in the HSI-NAFLD cohort. Besides, some chemical mixtures were only significant in HSI-NAFLD cohort including urinary arsenics (OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.02–1.12), urinary phenols (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.02–1.19) and blood polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.03–1.17). Three types of chemical mixtures only showed significant associations in the healthy lifestyle score (HLS) of 3–4 subgroup, including urinary perchlorate, nitrate and thiocyanate, urinary PAHs and blood polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins. In conclusion, the exposure of specific types of chemical mixtures were associated with elevated NAFLD risk, and the effects of some chemical mixtures on NAFLD development exhibited differences in participants with different lifestyles.

Nitrous acid (HONO), an essential precursor of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the troposphere, plays an integral role in atmospheric photochemistry. However, potential HONO sources remain unclear, particularly in rural areas, where long-term (including seasonal) measurements are scarce. HONO and related parameters were measured at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) during the winter of 2017 and summer and autumn of 2020. The mean HONO level was higher in winter (1.79 ± 1.44 ppbv) than in summer (0.67 ± 0.50 ppbv) and autumn (0.83 ± 0.62 ppbv). Source analysis revealed that the heterogeneous conversion (including photo-enhanced conversion) of NO₂ on the ground surface dominated the daytime HONO production in the three seasons (43.1% in winter, 54.3% in summer, and 62.0% in autumn), and the homogeneous reaction of NO and OH contributed 37.8, 12.2, and 28.4% of the daytime HONO production during winter, summer, and autumn, respectively. In addition, the total contributions of other sources (direct vehicle emissions, particulate nitrate photolysis, NO₂ uptake and its photo-enhanced reaction on the aerosol surface) to daytime HONO production were less than 5% in summer and autumn and 12.0% in winter. Unlike winter and autumn, an additional HONO source was found in summer (0.45 ± 0.21 ppbv h⁻¹, 31.4% to the daytime HONO formation), which might be attributed to the HONO emission from the fertilized field. Among the primary radical sources (photolysis of HONO, O₃, and formaldehyde), HONO photolysis was dominant, with contributions of 82.6, 49.3, and 63.2% in winter, summer, and autumn, respectively. Our findings may aid in understanding HONO formation in different seasons in rural areas and may highlight the impact of HONO on atmospheric oxidation capacity.

The significant reduction in PM₂.₅ mass concentration after the outbreak of COVID-19 provided a unique opportunity further to study the formation mechanism of secondary inorganic aerosols. Hourly data of chemical components in PM₂.₅, gaseous pollutants, and meteorological data were obtained from January 1 to 23, 2020 (pre-lockdown) and January 24 to February 17, 2020 (COVID-lockdown) in Zhengzhou, China. Sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium were the main components of PM₂.₅ during both the pre-lockdown and COVID-lockdown periods. Compared with the pre-lockdown period, even though the concentration and proportion of nitrate decreased, nitrate was the dominant component in PM₂.₅ during the COVID-lockdown period. Moreover, nitrate production was enhanced by the elevated O₃ concentration, which was favorable for the homogeneous and hydrolysis nitrate formation despite the drastic decrease of NO₂. The proportion of sulfate during the COVID-lockdown period was higher than that before. Aqueous-phase reactions of H₂O₂ and transition metal (TMI) catalyzed oxidations were the major pathways for sulfate formation. During the COVID-lockdown period, TMI-catalyzed oxidation became the dominant pathway for aqueous-phase sulfate formation because the elevated acidity favored the dissolution of TMI. Therefore, the enhanced TMI-catalyzed oxidation affected by the elevated particle acidity dominated the sulfate formation, resulting in the slight increase of sulfate concentration during the COVID-lockdown period in Zhengzhou.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant rhizosphere microbes reportedly enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses and promote plant growth in contaminated soils. The co-contamination of soil by heavy metals (e.g., Cd) and rare earth elements (e.g., La) represents a severe environmental problem. Although the influence of AMF in the phytoremediation of contaminated soils is well documented, the underlying interactive mechanisms between AMF and rhizosphere microbes are still unclear. We conducted a greenhouse pot experiment to evaluate the effects of AMF (Claroideoglomus etunicatum) on maize growth, nutrient and metal uptake, rhizosphere microbial community, and functional genes in soils with separate and combined applications of Cd and La. The purpose of this experiment was to explore the mechanism of AMF affecting plant growth and metal uptake via interactions with rhizosphere microbes. We found that C. etunicatum (i) significantly enhanced plant nutritional level and biomass and decreased metal concentration in the co-contaminated soil; (ii) significantly altered the structure of maize rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities; (iii) strongly enriched the abundance of carbohydrate metabolism genes, ammonia and nitrate production genes, IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) and ACC deaminase (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate) genes, and slightly altered the abundance of P-related functional genes; (iv) regulated the abundance of microbial quorum sensing system and metal membrane transporter genes, thereby improving the stability and adaptability of the rhizosphere microbial community. This study provides evidence of AMF improving plant growth and resistance to Cd and La stresses by regulating plant rhizosphere microbial communities and aids our understanding of the underlying mechanisms.

The San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California has suffered persistent particulate matter (PM) pollution despite many years of control efforts. To further understand the chemical drivers of this problem and to support the development of State Implementation Plan for PM, a time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ToF-ACSM) outfitted with a PM₂.₅ lens and a capture vaporizer has been deployed at the Fresno-Garland air monitoring site of the California Air Resource Board (CARB) since Oct. 2018. The instrument measured non-refractory species in PM₂.₅ continuously at 10-min resolution. In this study, the data acquired from Oct. 2018 to May 2019 were analyzed to investigate the chemical characteristics, sources and atmospheric processes of PM₂.₅ in the SJV. Comparisons of the ToF-ACSM measurement with various co-located aerosol instruments show good agreements. The inter-comparisons indicated that PM₂.₅ in Fresno was dominated by submicron particles during the winter whereas refractory species accounted for a major fraction of PM₂.₅ mass during the autumn associated with elevated PM₁₀ loadings. A rolling window positive matrix factorization analysis was applied to the organic aerosol (OA) mass spectra using the Multilinear Engine (ME-2) algorithm. Three distinct OA sources were identified, including vehicle emissions, local and regional biomass burning, and formation of oxygenated species. There were significant seasonal variations in PM₂.₅ composition and sources. During the winter, residential wood burning and oxidation of nitrogen oxides were major contributors to the occurrence of haze episodes with PM₂.₅ dominated by biomass burning OA and nitrate. In autumn, agricultural activities and wildfires were found to be the main cause of PM pollution. PM₂.₅ concentrations decreased significantly after spring and were dominated by oxygenated OA during March to May. Our results highlight the importance of using seasonally dependent control strategies to mitigate PM pollution in the SJV.

To evaluate the chemical status of groundwater bodies (GWB) according to the European Groundwater Directive, EU Member States are required to take into account natural background levels (NBLs) where needed. Assessing the NBLs in coastal GWBs is complicated by seawater intrusion which can be amplified by groundwater withdrawals increasing the salinization of such groundwater systems. This paper proposes a new method for the NBLs assessment in coastal areas based on a double pre-selection (PS) with fixed/dynamic limits. A case study in the Apulia region, located in southeastern Italy, is proposed, where we investigated four adjacent GWBs which form the complex karst, fractured Murgia aquifer, hosted in the Jurassic-Cretaceous carbonate platform, bounded by two seas and sustained by saltwater of marine intrusion in the coastal areas. Data related to 139 monitoring stations (MSs) of the regional groundwater monitoring network were used. The first PS, “static”, based on a fixed limit of anthropogenic contamination markers (NO₃ and NH₄), allows for the elimination of MSs impacted by human activities. On these, the second PS, “dynamic”, based on the identification of Cl anomalous values, allows for the identification of additional MSs affected by saline contamination. The residual dataset of MSs was used for the definition of NBLs of Cl, SO₄, F and B. A statistical comparison with historical Cl observations finally allowed us to verify if the salinity of current groundwater is representative of pristine conditions. The calculated NBLs of salinity parameters are higher for the two coastal GWBs, with chloride values between 0.8 and 2 mg/L. Conversely, fluorides always show very low NBLs. The double PS approach seems more effective for NBLs calculation in coastal aquifers affected by saline contamination, where the use of a fixed Cl limit fails. It may respond to the international needs for a standardized procedure for NBL assessment.

The elevation of nitrogen (N) deposition by urbanization profoundly impacts the structure and function of surrounding forest ecosystems. Plants are major biomass sinks of external N inputs into forests. Yet, the N-use strategies of forest plants in many areas remain unconstrained in city areas, so their responses and adapting mechanisms to the elevated N deposition are open questions. Here we investigated concentrations and N isotope (δ¹⁵N) of total N (TN) and nitrate (NO₃⁻) in leaves and roots of four plant species in subtropical shrubberies and pine forests under N deposition levels of 13 kg-N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and 29 kg-N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ at the Guiyang area of southwestern China, respectively. The δ¹⁵N differences between plant NO₃⁻ and soil NO₃⁻ revealed a meager NO₃⁻ reduction in leaves but a preferentially high NO₃⁻ reduction in roots. δ¹⁵N mass-balance analyses between plant TN and soil dissolved N suggested that soil NO₃⁻ contributed more than reduced N, and dissolved organic N contributed comparably with ammonium to plant TN, and the study plants preferred NO₃⁻ over reduced N. The elevation of N deposition induced root but not leaf NO₃⁻ reduction and enhanced the contribution of soil NO₃⁻ to plant TN, but plant NO₃⁻ preference decreased due to much higher magnitudes of soil NO₃⁻ enrichment than plant NO₃⁻ utilization. We conclude that plants in subtropical forests of southwestern China preferred NO₃⁻ over reduced N, and NO₃⁻ was reduced more in roots than in leaves, anthropogenic N pollution enhanced soil NO₃⁻ enrichment and plant NO₃⁻ utilization but reduced plant NO₃⁻ preference.
