The occurrence of veterinary antibiotics and hydro-chemical parameters in eleven natural springs in a livestock production area is evaluated, jointly with the characterization of their DOM fingerprint by Orbitrap HRMS. Tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotics were ubiquitous in all sites, and they were detected at low ng L⁻¹ concentrations, except for doxycycline, that was present at μg L⁻¹ in one location. DOM analysis revealed that most molecular formulas were CHO compounds (49 %–68 %), with a remarkable percentage containing nitrogen and sulphur (16 %–23 % and 11 %–24 %, respectively). Major DOM components were phenolic and highly unsaturated compounds (~90 %), typical for soil-derived organic matter, while approximately 11 % were unsaturated aliphatic, suggesting that springs may be susceptible to anthropogenic contamination sources. Comparing the DOM fingerprint among sites, the spring showing the most different profile was the one with surface water interaction and characterized by having lower CHO and higher CHOS formulas and aliphatic compounds. Correlations between antibiotics and DOM showed that tetracyclines positively correlate with unsaturated oxygen-rich substances, while sulfonamides relate with aliphatic and unsaturated oxygen-poor compounds. This indicates that the fate of different antibiotics will be controlled by the type of DOM present in groundwater.

High concentrations of ground-level ozone affect human health, plants, and animals. Reducing ozone pollution in rural regions, where local emissions are already low, poses challenge. We use meteorological back-trajectories, air quality model sensitivity analysis, and satellite remote sensing data to investigate the ozone sources in Yuma, Arizona and find strong international influences from Northern Mexico on 12 out of 16 ozone exceedance days. We find that such exceedances could not be mitigated by reducing emissions in Arizona; complete removal of state emissions would reduce the maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) ozone in Yuma by only 0.7% on exceeding days. In contrast, emissions in Mexico are estimated to contribute to 11% of the ozone during these exceedances, and their reduction would reduce MDA8 ozone in Yuma to below the standard. Using satellite-based remote sensing measurements, we find that emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ, a key photochemical precursor of ozone) increase slightly in Mexico from 2005 to 2016, opposite to decreases shown in the bottom-up inventory. In comparison, a decrease of NOₓ emissions in the US and meteorological factors lead to an overall of summer mean and annual MDA8 ozone in Yuma (by ∼1–4% and ∼3%, respectively). Analysis of meteorological back-trajectories also shows similar transboundary transport of ozone at the US-Mexico border in California and New Mexico, where strong influences from Northern Mexico coincide with 11 out of 17 and 6 out of 8 ozone exceedances. 2020 is the final year of the U.S.-Mexico Border 2020 Program, which aimed to reduce pollution at border regions of the US and Mexico. Our results indicate the importance of sustaining a substantial cooperative program to improve air quality at the border area.

Presently, graphenic nanomaterials are being studied as candidates for wastewater pollutant removal. In this study, two graphite oxides produced from natural graphite with different grain sizes (325 and 10 mesh), their respective reduced graphene oxides and one reduced graphene oxide with nitrogen functional groups were synthesized and tested to remove a surfactant model substrate, Triton X-100, from an aqueous solution. Kinetic experiments were carried out and adjusted to pseudo-first order equation, pseudo-second order equation, Elovich, Chain-Clayton and intra-particle diffusion models. Reduced graphene oxides displayed an instantaneous adsorption due to their accessible and hydrophobic surfaces, while graphite oxides hindered the TX100 adsorption rate due to their highly superficial oxygen content. Results from the adsorption isotherms showed that the Sips model perfectly described the TX100 adsorption behavior of these materials. Higher adsorption capacities were developed with reduced graphene oxides, being maximum for the material produced from the lower graphite grain size (qₑ = 3.55·10⁻⁶ mol/m²), which could be explained by a higher surface area (600 m²/g), a lower amount of superficial oxygen (O/C = 0.04) and a more defected structure (ID/IG = 0.85). Additionally, three commercial high surface area graphites in the range of 100–500 m²/g were evaluated for comparison purposes. In this case, better adsorption results were obtained with a more graphitic material, HSAG100 (qₑ = 1.72·10⁻⁶ mol/m²). However, the best experimental results of this study were obtained using synthesized graphenic materials.

Excess of water irrigation and fertilizer consumption by crops has resulted in high soil nitrogen (N) losses and underground water contamination not only in China but worldwide. This study explored the effects of soil N input, soil N output, as well as the effect of different irrigation and N- fertilizer managements on residual N. For this, two consecutive years of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) –summer maize (Zea mays L.) rotation was conducted with: N applied at 0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, 420 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and 600 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ under fertigation (DN0, DN420, DN600), and N applied at 0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and 600 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ under flood irrigation (FN0, FN600). The results demonstrated that low irrigation water consumption resulted in a 57.2% lower of irrigation-N input (p < 0.05) in DN600 when compared to FN600, especially in a rainy year like 2015–2016. For N output, no significant difference was found with all N treatments. Soil gaseous N losses were highly correlated with fertilization (p < 0.001) and were reduced by 23.6%–41.7% when fertilizer N was decreased by 30%. Soil N leaching was highly affected by irrigation and a higher reduction was observed under saving irrigation (reduced by 33.9%–57.3%) than under optimized fertilization (reduced by 23.6%–50.7%). The net N surplus was significantly increased with N application rate but was not affected by irrigation treatments. Under the same N level (600 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹), fertigation increased the Total Nitrogen (TN) stock by 17.5% (0–100 cm) as compared to flood irrigation. These results highlighted the importance to further reduction of soil N losses under optimized fertilization and irrigation combined with N stabilizers or balanced- N fertilization for future agriculture development.

Understanding the migration and conversion of nitrogen in wood-based panels (WBPs) during pyrolysis is fundamentally important for potentially transforming the N-containing species into valuable material-based products. This review firstly summarizes the commonly used methods for examining N evolution during the WBPs pyrolysis before probing into the association between the wood and adhesives.The potential effects of wood-adhesive interaction on the pyrolysis process are subsequently analyzed. Furthermore, the controversial statements from literature on the influence of adhesives on wood pyrolysis behavior are discussed, which is followed by the detailed investigation into the distribution and evolution of N-containing species in gas, liquid and char, respectively, during WBPs pyrolysis in recent studies. The differences in N species due to the heating sources (i.e. electrical heating vs microwave heating) are particularly compared. Finally, based on the characteristics of staged pyrolysis, co-pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis, the converting pathways for WBPs are proposed with an emphasis on the production of value-added chemicals and carbon materials, simultaneously mitigating NOₓ emission.

Rice paddies are one of the largest greenhouse gases (GHGs) facilitators that are predominantly regulated by nitrogen (N) fertilization. Optimization of N uses based on the yield has been tried a long since, however, the improvement of the state-of-the-art technologies and the stiffness of global warming need to readjust N rate. Albeit, few individual studies started to, herein attempted as a systematic review to generalize the optimal N rate that minimizes global warming potential (GWP) concurrently provides sufficient yield in the rice system. To satisfy mounted food demand with inadequate land & less environmental impact, GHGs emissions are increasingly evaluated as yield-scaled basis. This systematic review (20 published studies consisting of 21 study sites and 190 observations) aimed to test the hypothesis that the lowest yield-scaled GWP would provide the minimum GWP of CH₄ and N₂O emissions from rice system at near optimal yields. Results revealed that there was a strong polynomial quadratic relationship between CH₄ emissions and N rate and strong positive correlation between N₂O emissions and N rate. Compared to control the low N dose emitted less (23%) CH₄ whereas high N dose emitted higher (63%) CH₄ emission. The highest N₂O emission observed at moderated N level. In total GWP, about 96% and 4%, GHG was emitted as CH₄ and N₂O, respectively. The mean GWP of CH₄ and N₂O emissions from rice was 5758 kg CO₂ eq ha⁻¹. The least yield-scaled GWP (0.7565 (kg CO₂ eq. ha⁻¹)) was recorded at 190 kg N ha⁻¹ that provided the near utmost yield. This dose could be a suitable dose in midseason drainage managed rice systems especially in tropical and subtropical climatic conditions. This yield-scaled GWP supports the concept of win–win for food security and environmental aspects through balancing between viable rice productivity and maintaining convincing greenhouse gases.

Biochar is often applied to paddy soils as a soil improver, as it retains nutrients and increases C sequestration; as such, it is a tool in the move towards C-neutral agriculture. Nitrogen (N) fertilizers have been excessively applied to rice paddies, particularly in small farms in China, because N is the major limiting factor for rice production. In paddy soils, dynamic changes in iron (Fe) continuously affect soil emissions of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂); however, the links between Fe dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and rice yields following application of biochar remain unclear. The aims of this study were to examine the effects of two rates of nitrogen (N)-enriched biochar (4 and 8 t ha⁻¹ y⁻¹) on paddy soil C emissions and storage, rice yields, and Fe dynamics in subtropical early and late rice growing seasons. Field application of N-enriched biochar at 4 and 8 t ha⁻¹ increased C emissions in early and late rice, whereas application at 4 t ha⁻¹ significantly increased rice yields. The results of a culture experiment and a field experiment showed that the application of N-enriched biochar increased soil Fe²⁺concentration. There were positive correlations between Fe²⁺concentrations and soil CO₂, CH₄, and total C emissions, and with soil DOC concentrations. On the other way around, these correlations were negative for soil Fe³⁺concentrations. In the soil culture experiment, under the exclusion of plant growth, N-enriched biochar reduced cumulative soil emissions of CH₄ and CO₂. We conclude that moderate inputs of N-rich biochar (4 t ha⁻¹) increase rice crop yield and biomass, and soil DOC concentrations, while moderating soil cumulative C emissions, in part, by the impacts of biochar on soil Fe dynamics. We suggest that water management strategies, such as dry-wet cycles, should be employed in rice cultivation to increase Fe²⁺ oxidation for the inhibition of soil CH₄ and CO₂ production. Overall, we showed that application of 4 t ha⁻¹ of N-enriched biochar may represent a potential tool to improve sustainable food production and security, while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

The combined application of organic and synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers is being widely recommended in China’s vegetable systems to reduce reliance on synthetic N fertilizer. However, the effect of substituting synthetic fertilizer with organic fertilizer on vegetable productivity (yield, N uptake and nitrogen use efficiency) and reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses (N₂O emission, N leaching and NH₃ volatilization) remains unclear. A meta-analysis was performed using peer-reviewed papers published from 2000 to 2019 to comprehensively assess the effects of combined application of organic and synthetic N fertilizers. The results indicate that overall, the vegetable yield, N₂O emission and NH₃ volatilization were not significantly changed, whereas N leaching was reduced by 44.6% and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration increased by 12.5% compared to synthetic N fertilizer alone. Specifically, when synthetic N substitution rates (SRs) were ≤70%, vegetable yields and SOC concentration were increased by 5.5%–5.6% and 13.1–18.0%, and N leaching was reduced by 41.6%–48.1%. At the high substitution rate (SR>70%), vegetable yield was reduced by 13.6%, N₂O emission was reduced by 14.3%, and SOC concentration increased by 16.4%. Mixed animal-plant sources of organic N preferentially increased vegetable yield and SOC concentration, and reduced N₂O emission and N leaching compared with single sources of organic-N. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission was decreased by 28.4%–34.9% by combined applications of organic and synthetic N sources, relative to synthetic N fertilizer alone. We conclude that appropriate rates (SR ≤ 70%) of combined applications of organic and synthetic N fertilizers could improve vegetable yields, decrease Nr and GHG emission, and facilitate sustainable development of coupled vegetable-livestock systems.

The determination of both stable nitrogen (δ¹⁵N–NO₃⁻) and stable oxygen (δ¹⁸O–NO₃⁻) isotopic signatures of nitrate in PM₂.₅ has shown potential for an approach of assessing the sources and oxidation pathways of atmospheric NOx (NO+NO₂). In the present study, daily PM₂.₅ samples were collected in the megacity of Beijing, China during the winter of 2017–2018, and this new approach was used to reveal the origin and oxidation pathways of atmospheric NOx. Specifically, the potential of field δ¹⁵N–NO₃⁻ signatures for determining the NOx oxidation chemistry was explored. Positive correlations between δ¹⁸O–NO₃⁻ and δ¹⁵N–NO₃⁻ were observed (with R² between 0.51 and 0.66, p < 0.01), and the underlying environmental significance was discussed. The results showed that the pathway-specific contributions to NO₃⁻ formation were approximately 45.3% from the OH pathway, 46.5% from N₂O₅ hydrolysis, and 8.2% from the NO₃+HC channel based on the δ¹⁸O-δ¹⁵N space of NO₃⁻. The overall nitrogen isotopic fractionation factor (εN) from NOx to NO₃⁻ on a daily scale, under winter conditions, was approximately +16.1‰±1.8‰ (consistent with previous reports). Two independent approaches were used to simulate the daily and monthly ambient NOx mixtures (δ¹⁵N-NOx), respectively. Results indicated that the monthly mean values of δ¹⁵N-NOx compared well based on the two approaches, with values of −5.5‰ ± 2.6‰, −2.7‰ ± 1.9‰, and −3.2‰ ± 2.2‰ for November, December, and January (2017–2018), respectively. The uncertainty was in the order of 5%, 5‰ and 5.2‰ for the pathway-specific contributions, the εN, and δ¹⁵N-NOx, respectively. Results also indicated that vehicular exhaust was the key contributor to the wintertime atmospheric NOx in Beijing (2017–2018). Our advanced isotopic perspective will support the future assessment of the origin and oxidation of urban atmospheric NOx.

It is still a great challenge to address nutrient pollution issues caused by various point sources and non-point sources on the watershed scale. Source contribution analysis based on watershed modeling can help watershed managers identify major pollution sources, propose effective management plans and make smart decisions. This study demonstrated a technical procedure for addressing watershed-scale water pollution problems in an agriculture-dominated watershed, using the Dengsha River Watershed (DRW) in Dalian, China as an example. The SWAT model was improved by considering the constraints of soil nutrient concentration, i.e., nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), when modeling the nutrient uptake by a typical crop, corn. Then the modified SWAT model was used to quantify the contributions of all known pollution sources to the N and P pollution in the DRW. The results showed that crop production and trans-administrative wastewater discharge were the two dominant sources of nutrient pollution. This study further examined the responses of nutrient loss and crop yield to different fertilizer application schemes. The results showed that N fertilizer was the limiting factor for crop yield and that excessive levels of P were stored in the agricultural soils of the DRW. An N fertilizer application rate of approximately 40% of the current rate was suggested to balance water quality and environmental protection with crop production. The long-term impact of legacy P was investigated with a 100-year future simulation that showed the crop growth could maintain for 12 years even after P fertilization ceased. Our study highlights the need to consider source attribution, fertilizer application and legacy P impacts in agriculture-dominated watersheds. The analysis framework used in this study can provide a scientifically sound procedure for formulating adaptive and sustainable nutrient management strategies in other study areas.
