no sp Assessment of Nitrogen Fluxes to Air and Water from Site Scale to Continental Scale | We assessed nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions at shoulder and foot-slope positions along three sloping sites (1.6-2.1%) to identify the factors controlling the spatial variations in emissions. The three sites received same amounts of total nitrogen (N) input at 170 kg N ha−1. Results showed that landscape positions had a significant, but not consistent effect on N2O fluxes with larger emission in the foot-slope at only one of the three sites. The effect of soil inorganic N (NH4+ + NO3−) contents on N2O fluxes (r2 = 0.55, p < 0.001) was influenced by water-filled pore space (WFPS). Soil N2O fluxes were related to inorganic N at WFPS > 60% (r2 = 0.81, p < 0.001), and NH4+ contents at WFPS < 60% (r2 = 0.40, p < 0.01), respectively. Differences in WFPS between shoulder and foot-slope correlated linearly with differences in N2O fluxes (r2 = 0.45, p < 0.001). We conclude that spatial variations in N2O emission were regulated by the influence of hydrological processes on soil aeration intensity.

The effects of combined biochar and double inhibitor application on gaseous nitrogen (N; nitrous oxide [N₂O] and ammonia [NH₃]) emissions and N leaching in paddy soils remain unclear. We investigated the effects of biochar application at different rates and double inhibitor application (hydroquinone [HQ] and dicyandiamide [DCD]) on NH₃ and N₂O emissions, N leaching, as well as rice yield in a paddy field, with eight treatments, including conventional urea N application at 280 kg N ha⁻¹ (CN); reduced N application at 240 kg N ha⁻¹ (RN); RN + 7.5 t ha⁻¹ biochar (RNB1); RN + 15 t ha⁻¹ biochar (RNB2); RN + HQ + DCD (RNI); RNB1 + HQ + DCD (RNIB1); RNB2 + HQ + DCD (RNIB2); and a control without N fertilizer. When compared with N leaching under RN, biochar application reduced total N leaching by 26.9–34.8% but stimulated NH₃ emissions by 13.2–27.1%, mainly because of enhanced floodwater and soil NH₄⁺-N concentrations and pH, and increased N₂O emission by 7.7–21.2%, potentially due to increased soil NO₃⁻-N concentrations. Urease and nitrification inhibitor addition decreased NH₃ and N₂O emissions, and total N leaching by 20.1%, 21.5%, and 22.1%, respectively. Compared with RN, combined biochar (7.5 t ha⁻¹) and double inhibitor application decreased NH₃ and N₂O emissions, with reductions of 24.3% and 14.6%, respectively, and reduced total N leaching by up to 45.4%. Biochar application alone or combined with double inhibitors enhanced N use efficiency from 26.2% (RN) to 44.7% (RNIB2). Conversely, double inhibitor application alone or combined with biochar enhanced rice yield and reduced yield-scaled N₂O emissions. Our results suggest that double inhibitor application alone or combined with 7.5 t ha⁻¹ biochar is an effective practice to mitigate NH₃ and N₂O emission and N leaching in paddy fields.

Natural processes and human activities play a crucial role in changing the nitrogen cycle and increasing nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, which are accelerating at an unprecedented rate. N₂O has serious global warming potential (GWP), about 310 times higher than that of carbon dioxide. The food production, transportation, and energy required to sustain a world population of seven billion have required dramatic increases in the consumption of synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers and fossil fuels, leading to increased N₂O in air and water. These changes have radically disturbed the nitrogen cycle and reactive nitrogen species, such as nitrous oxide (N₂O), and have impacted the climatic system. Yet, systematic and comprehensive studies on various underlying processes and parameters in the altered nitrogen cycle, and their implications for the climatic system are still lacking. This paper reviews how the nitrogen cycle has been disturbed and altered by anthropogenic activities, with a central focus on potential pathways of N₂O generation. The authors also estimate the N₂O–N emission mainly due to anthropogenic activities will be around 8.316 Tg N₂O–N yr⁻¹ in 2050. In order to minimize and tackle the N₂O emissions and its consequences on the global ecosystem and climate change, holistic mitigation strategies and diverse adaptations, policy reforms, and public awareness are suggested as vital considerations. This study concludes that rapidly increasing anthropogenic perturbations, the identification of new microbial communities, and their role in mediating biogeochemical processes now shape the modern nitrogen cycle.

Vegetable soils with high nitrogen input are hotspots of nitrous oxide (N₂O) and nitric oxide (NO), and biochar amended to soil has been documented to effectively decrease N₂O and NO emissions. However, the aging effects of biochar on soil N₂O and NO production and the relevant mechanisms are not thoroughly understood. A¹⁵N tracing microcosm study was conducted to clarify the responses of N₂O and NO production pathways to the biochar aging process in vegetable soil. The results showed that autotrophic nitrification was the predominant source of N₂O production. Biochar aging increased the O-containing functional groups while lowering the aromaticity and pore size. Fresh biochar enhanced the AOB-amoA gene abundance and obviously stimulated N₂O production by 15.5% via autotrophic nitrification and denitrification. In contrast, field-aged biochar markedly weakened autotrophic nitrification and denitrification and thus decreased N₂O production by 17.0%, as evidenced by the change in AOB-amoA and nosZI gene abundances. However, the amendment with artificially lab-aged biochar had no effect on N₂O production. With the extension of aging time, biochar application reduced the soil NO production dominated by nitrification. Changes in the N₂O and NO fluxes were closely associated with soil NH₄⁺-N and NO₂⁻-N contents, indicating that autotrophic nitrification played a critical role in NO production. Overall, our study demonstrated that field-aged biochar suppressed N₂O production via autotrophic nitrification and denitrification by regulating associated functional genes, but not for lab-aged biochar or fresh biochar. These findings improved our insights regarding the implications of biochar aging on N₂O and NO mitigation in vegetable soils.

Rice paddies are one of the largest greenhouse gases (GHGs) facilitators that are predominantly regulated by nitrogen (N) fertilization. Optimization of N uses based on the yield has been tried a long since, however, the improvement of the state-of-the-art technologies and the stiffness of global warming need to readjust N rate. Albeit, few individual studies started to, herein attempted as a systematic review to generalize the optimal N rate that minimizes global warming potential (GWP) concurrently provides sufficient yield in the rice system. To satisfy mounted food demand with inadequate land & less environmental impact, GHGs emissions are increasingly evaluated as yield-scaled basis. This systematic review (20 published studies consisting of 21 study sites and 190 observations) aimed to test the hypothesis that the lowest yield-scaled GWP would provide the minimum GWP of CH₄ and N₂O emissions from rice system at near optimal yields. Results revealed that there was a strong polynomial quadratic relationship between CH₄ emissions and N rate and strong positive correlation between N₂O emissions and N rate. Compared to control the low N dose emitted less (23%) CH₄ whereas high N dose emitted higher (63%) CH₄ emission. The highest N₂O emission observed at moderated N level. In total GWP, about 96% and 4%, GHG was emitted as CH₄ and N₂O, respectively. The mean GWP of CH₄ and N₂O emissions from rice was 5758 kg CO₂ eq ha⁻¹. The least yield-scaled GWP (0.7565 (kg CO₂ eq. ha⁻¹)) was recorded at 190 kg N ha⁻¹ that provided the near utmost yield. This dose could be a suitable dose in midseason drainage managed rice systems especially in tropical and subtropical climatic conditions. This yield-scaled GWP supports the concept of win–win for food security and environmental aspects through balancing between viable rice productivity and maintaining convincing greenhouse gases.

The aims of this study were to determine type and application rate of composted animal manure to optimize sweet potato yield relative to N₂O emissions from upland soils. To this end, the study was conducted on upland soils amended with different types and rates of composted animal manure and located at two geographically different regions of South Korea. Field trials were established at Miryang and Yesan in South Korea during the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) growing season over 2 years: 2017 (Year 1) and 2018 (Year 2). Three composted animal manures (chicken, cow, and pig) were applied at the rates of 0, 10, and 20 Mg ha⁻¹ to upland soils in both locations. In both Years and locations, manure type did not affected significantly cumulative N₂O emissions from soil during the sweet potato growing season or the belowground biomass of sweet potato. However, application rate of animal manures affected significantly the cumulative N₂O emission, nitrogen (N) in soil, and belowground biomass of sweet potato. An increase in cumulative N₂O emission with application rates of animal manures was related to total N and inorganic N concentration in soil. The belowground biomass yield of sweet potato but also the cumulative N₂O emission increased with increasing application rate of composted animal manures up to 7.6 and 16.0 Mg ha⁻¹ in Miryang and Yesan, respectively. To reduce N₂O emission from arable soil while increasing crop yield, composted animal manures should be applied at less than application rate that produce the maximum belowground biomass of sweet potato.

Considerable uncertainty exists with regard to the effects of thinning and harvesting on N₂O emissions as a result of changes caused in the belowground environment by tree cutting. To evaluate on the effects of changes in the belowground environment on N₂O emissions from soils, we conducted a tree manipulation experiment in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) stand without soil compaction or slash falling near measurement chambers and measured N₂O emission at distances of 50 and 150 cm from the tree stem (stump) before and after cutting. In addition, we inferred the effects of logging on the emission using a hierarchical Bayesian (HB) model. Our results showed that tree cutting stimulated N₂O emission from soil and that the increase in N₂O emission depended on the distance from the stem (stump); increase in N₂O emission was greater at 50 than at 150 cm from the stem. Tree cutting caused the estimated N₂O emission at 0–40 cm from the stem to double (the % increase in N₂O emission by tree cutting was 54%–213%, 95% predictive credible interval) when soil temperature was 25 °C and WFPS was 60%. Posterior simulation of the HB model predicted that 30% logging would cause a 57% (47%–67%) increase in N₂O emission at our study site (2000 trees ha⁻¹) considering only the effects of belowground changes by tree cutting during the measurement period.

Plastic mulching and straw incorporation are common agricultural practices in China. Plastic mulching is suspected to be a significant source of microplastics in terrestrial environments. Straw incorporation has many effects on the storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) and greenhouse gas emissions, but these effects have not been studied in the presence of microplastic pollution. In this study, 365-day soil incubation experiments were conducted to assess the effects of maize straw and polyethylene microplastics on SOC fractions and carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions in two different soils (fluvo-aquic and latosol). Against the background of straw incorporation, microplastics reduced the mineralization and decomposition of SOC, resulting in a microbially available SOC content decrease by 18.9%. In addition, microplastics were carbon-rich, but relatively stable and difficult to be used by microorganisms, thus increasing the mineral-associated SOC content by 52.5%. This indicated that microplastics had adverse effects on microbially available SOC and positive effects on mineral-associated SOC. Microplastics also decreased coarse particulate SOC (>250 μm), and increased non-aggregated silt and clay aggregated SOC (<53 μm). Furthermore, microplastics changed microbial community compositions, thereby reducing the CO₂ and N₂O emissions of straw incorporation by 26.5%–33.9% and 35.4%–39.7%, respectively. These results showed that microplastics partially offset the increase of CO₂ and N₂O emissions induced by straw incorporation. Additionally, the inhibitory effect of microplastics on CO₂ emissions in fluvo-aquic soil was lower than that in latosol soil, whereas the inhibitory effect on N₂O emissions had the opposite trend.

Urban turfgrass ecosystems are expected to increase at unprecedented rates in upcoming decades, due to the increasing population density and urban sprawl worldwide. However, so far urban turfgrasses are among the least understood of all terrestrial ecosystems concerning their impact on biogeochemical N cycling and associated nitrous oxide (N₂O) and nitric oxide (NO) fluxes. In this study, we aimed to characterize and quantify annual N₂O and NO fluxes from urban turfgrasses dominated by either C4, warm-season species or C3, cool-season and shade-enduring species, based on year-round field measurements in Beijing, China. Our results showed that soil N₂O and NO fluxes varied substantially within the studied year, characterizing by higher emissions during the growing season and lower fluxes during the non-growing season. The regression model fitted by soil temperature and soil water content explained approximately 50%–70% and 31%–38% of the variance in N₂O and NO fluxes, respectively. Annual cumulative emissions for all urban turfgrasses ranged from 0.75 to 1.27 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ for N₂O and from 0.30 to 0.46 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ for NO, both are generally higher than those of Chinese natural grasslands. Non-growing season fluxes contributed 17%–37% and 23%–30% to the annual budgets of N₂O and NO, respectively. Our results also showed that compared to the cool-season turfgrass, annual N₂O and NO emissions were greatly reduced by the warm-season turfgrass, with the high root system limiting the availability of inorganic N substrates to soil microbial processes of nitrification and denitrification. This study indicates the importance of enhanced N retention of urban turfgrasses through the management of effective species for alleviating the potential environmental impacts of these rapidly expanding ecosystems.

Ecological floating beds (EFBs) have become a superior method for treating secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plant. However, insufficient electron donor limited its denitrification efficiency. Iron scraps from lathe cutting waste consist of more than 95% iron could be used as electron donors to enhance denitrification. In this study, EFBs with and without iron scraps supplementation (EFB-Fe and EFB, respectively) were conducted to explore the impacts of iron scraps addition on nitrogen removal, nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions and microbial communities. Results showed the total nitrogen (TN) removal in EFB-Fe improved to 79% while that in EFB was 56%. N₂O emission was 0–6.20 mg m⁻² d⁻¹ (EFB-Fe) and 1.74–15.2 mg m⁻² d⁻¹ (EFB). Iron scraps could not only improve nitrogen removal efficiency, but also reduce N₂O emissions. In addition, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that adding iron scraps could improve the sum of denitrification related genera, among which Novosphingobium accounted for the highest proportion (6.75% of PFe1, 4.24% of PFe2, 3.18% of PFe3). Iron-oxidizing bacteria and iron-respiring bacteria associated with and nitrate reducing bacteria mainly concentrated on the surface of iron scraps. Principal co-ordinates analysis (PCoA) indicated that iron scraps were the key factor affecting microbial community composition. The mechanism of iron scraps enhanced nitrogen removal was realized by enhanced biological denitrification process. Iron release dynamic from iron scraps was detected in bench-scale experiment and the electron transfer mechanism was that Fe⁰ transferred electrons directly to NO₃⁻-N, and biological iron nitrogen cycle occurred in EFB-Fe without secondary pollution.
