Greenhouse experiment was conducted for four months using Leucaena leucocephala and Pleurotus tuber-regium to determine their bioremediation potentials. Leucaena leucocephala, Pleurotus tuber-regium and Leucaena leucocephala combined with Pleurotus tuber-regium were tested for their ability to improve nutrient (N, P, K, total organic carbon) and reduce heavy metals (Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu) of soil polluted with spent engine oil [5% (w/v)] and soil without spent engine oil was used as control. Bioaccumulation of nutrients and heavy metals in Leucaena leucocephala and Pleurotus tuber-regium were also determined. The highest reduction in Zn, Ni, Pb and Cu (41%, 48.39%, 61.60 and 52.72% respectively) were recorded in soil remediated with Leucaena leucocephala alone, reduction of 30.40%, 26.53%, 48.07% and 39.60% respectively were recorded in soil remediated with Pleurotus tuber-regium alone while in soil remediated with combined Pleurotus tuber-regium and Leucaena leucocephala, reductions of 32.7%, 33.43%, 88.41% and 46.22% respectively were recorded. Bioaccumulation of Zn, Ni, Pb and Cu in Leucaena leucocephala increased by 73.41%, 85.46%, 3366.04% and 125.53% respectively, similarly in Pleurotus tuber-regium by 30.16%, 21.67%, 71.11% and 53.21% respectively. These studies have shown that Pleurotus tuber-regium and Leucaena leucocephala are capable of bioremediating spent engine oil polluted soil although, treatment with Leucaena leucocephala alone tends to be most effective of these treatments.

High resolution sediment records in the Yangtze Delta front were constructed to reveal recent environmental changes in response to river basin human activities. Increases in nutrient and organic C influxes that began in the 1950s, together with elevated primary productivity and increased chemical fertilizer application, suggested a shift toward anthropogenic-predominated environmental changes during this period. The depletion of total organic C (TOC), total N (TN), and biogenic Si (BSi), along with the decline in sedimentation rate and coarsening of sediment coincided with the development of hydrological engineering in the river basin from the 1980s. Reservoir Si retention substantially altered river mouth primary productivity community composition from diatoms to non-diatoms, thereby changing the BSi/TOC molar ratio in the sediment profile. Estimation of biogenic component burial fluxes was conducted to assess the variation and potential impacts. A recent dramatic decline in biogenic component burial in the delta area suggested a low nutrient removal efficiency in this region, due to the decrease in sediment discharge. Consequently, more nutrients have been further transported to the inner shelf and open waters instead of being buried in the delta sediment, thereby increasing the environmental pressure in the Yangtze Delta and adjoining coastal area.

The production and soil accumulation of nanoparticles (NPs) from the industrial sector has increased concerns about their toxic effects in plants which needs the research to explore the ways of reducing NPs toxicity in pants. The gibberellic acid (GA) has been found to reduce abiotic stresses in plants. However, the effect of GA in reducing zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs-mediated toxicity in plants remains unclear. In this study, foliar application of GA was used to explore the possible role in reducing ZnO NPs toxicity in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants. The plants were grown in pots spiked with ZnO NPs (0, 300, 600, 900, 1200 mg/kg) and GA (0, 100, 200 mg/L) was foliar sprayed at different times during the growth period under ambient environmental conditions. Our results demonstrated that GA inhibited the toxicity of ZnO NPs in wheat especially at higher levels of NPs. The GA application improved the plant biomass, photosynthesis, nutrients, and yield under ZnO NPs stress. The GA reduced the Zn accumulation, and reactive oxygen species generation in plants caused by toxicity of NPs. The protective effect of GA in decreasing ZnO NPs-induced oxidative stress was related to GA-mediated enhancement in antioxidant enzymes in plants. The role of GA in enhancing tolerance of wheat against ZnO NPs was further confirmed by the enhancement in nutrient contents in shoots and roots of wheat. Overall, our study provides the evidence that GA can reduce ZnO NPs-induced toxicity in wheat and probably in other crops which needs further in-depth investigation.

Copper (Cu) induced phytotoxicity has become a serious environmental problem as a consequence of significant metal release through anthropogenic activity. Understanding the spatial distribution of Cu in plants such as willow is essential to elucidate the mechanisms of metal accumulation and transport in woody plants, particularly as affected by variable environment conditions such as soil flooding. Using synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) techniques, the spatial distribution of Cu and other nutrient elements were investigated in roots and stems of Salix (S.) integra exposed to 450 mg kg⁻¹ Cu under non-flooded (NF)/flooding (F) conditions for 90 d. S. integra grown in the F condition exhibited significant higher tolerance index (TI, determined by the ratio of total biomass in Cu treatments to control) (p < 0.05) than that in the NF condition, indicating soil flooding alleviated Cu toxicity to willow plants. The μ-XRF revealed that Cu was preferentially located in the root cap and meristematic zone of the root tips. Under the NF condition, the Cu intensity in the root epidermis was more highly concentrated than that of the F condition, suggesting the soil flooding significantly inhibited Cu uptake by S. integra. The pattern of the Cu spatial distribution in the S. integra stem indicated that the F condition severely reduced Cu transport via the xylem vessels as a consequence of decreasing the transpiration rate of leaves. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the in vivo Cu distribution in S. integra in a scenario of co-exposure to the Cu and the soil flooding over a long period. The finding that Cu uptake varies significantly with flooding condition is relevant to the development of strategies for plants to detoxify the metals and to maintain the nutrient homeostasis.

The conversion of natural saltmarshes to shrimp aquaculture ponds can potentially influence the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in coastal wetlands, but its impact on the dynamics of sediment dissimilatory nitrate (NO3−) reduction remains poorly understood. In this study, three sediment NO3− reduction processes including denitrification (DNF), anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), and dissimilatory NO3− reduction to ammonium (DNRA) were examined simultaneously in a natural saltmarsh and two shrimp culture ponds (5- and 18-year-old) in July and November, using nitrogen (N) isotope-tracing experiments. Our results showed that sediment potential DNF, ANAMMOX and DNRA rates were generally higher in the shrimp culture ponds than the natural saltmarsh in the two seasons. The rates of all three processes generally increased with the age of shrimp ponds, with the magnitude of increase being less pronounced for DNF and ANAMMOX than DNRA. The contribution of DNRA to total NO3− reduction increased significantly following saltmarsh conversion to shrimp ponds, suggesting that DNRA became an increasingly important biogeochemical process under shrimp culture. DNRA competed with DNF and limited reactive N loss to some extent after natural saltmarshes converted to shrimp culture ponds. The results of redundancy analysis revealed that the availability of substrates and sulfides in sediments, rather than the bacteria gene abundance, were the most important factor influencing the NO3− reduction processes. Overall, our findings highlighted that shrimp-aquaculture reclamation may aggravate nitrogen loading in coastal wetlands by promoting the production of bioavailable ammonium.

Agricultural soil is one of the main sink for both heavy metals and nanomaterials (NMs). Whether NMs can impact heavy metals uptake or bioaccumulation in plants is unknown. Here, cucumber plants were cultivated in a multi-heavy metals contaminated soil amended with four types of NMs (SiO2, TiO2, ZnS and MoS2) separately for four weeks. Physiological and biochemical parameters were determined to investigate the impact of NMs on plant growth. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed to determine the metal content in plants. Results showed that none of the tested NMs impacted plants biomass, but all the NMs showed different degrees of reduction in heavy metals bioaccumulation in plant roots, stems and leaves. However, four NMs showed different degrees of reduction in macro and micro nutrients uptake. MoS2 decreased the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Al, Ti and Pb) for 36.4–60.6% and nutrients (Mg, Fe, K, Si and Mn) for 40.1%–50.1% in roots. Exposure to MoS2 NMs also significantly increased 23.4% of Si in leaves, 205.6% and 83.9% of Mo in roots and stems, respectively. In general, the results of this study showed promising potential for NMs to reduce uptake of heavy metals in crop plants, especially MoS2 NMs. However, the negative impacts of perturbing nutrients uptake should be paid attention as well.

Rorippa globosa (Turcz.) Thell. is known as Cd hyperaccumulator, however neither hyperaccumulation nature, nor affecting factors like the effect of Cd compounds entering soil from different sources, or of specific soil amendments, are not yet satisfactorily clarified. In the pot culture experiment, Cd accumulation by R. globosa from soils spiked with 3 and 9 mg Cd kg⁻¹ in the form of Cd(NO₃)₂, CdCl₂, CdBr₂, CdI₂, CdSO₄, CdF₂, Cd(OH)₂, CdCO₃, Cd₃(PO₄)₂, CdS and effect of soil amendment with glutathione (GSH) were investigated. Accumulation capacity of R. globosa for Cd appeared to reflect its extractability in soils and was about two-fold bigger for high soluble compounds than for low-soluble ones. At that, the differences between the accumulation of Cd originating from high soluble compound group did not exceed 20%, while the differences within the low soluble compound group were insignificant (p < 0.05). The analysis of Cd uptake, uptake factor (UF), enrichment factor (EF) and translocation factor (TF) patterns revealed that Cd hyperaccumulating properties of R. globosa are based on the high water/nutrients demand and strong tolerance to Cd, although weak protection against Cd uptake by root system was also observed. Amendment with GSH enhanced Cd availability to plant and its uptake from soil, but exerted no effect on Cd translocation in plants. In the light of the results, the use of R. globosa for phytoremediation of moderately polluted agricultural lands as forecrop or aftercrop, and the GSH-assisted phytoremediation of highly polluted post-industrial sites seem to be viable options.

Rapid development in nanotechnology and incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in wide range of consumer products causing the considerable release of these NPs in the environment, leading concerns for ecosystem safety and plant health. In this study, rice (Oryza sativa) was exposed to AgNPs (0, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 mg L−1) in biochar amended (2 %w/v) and un-amended systems. Exposure of plants to AgNPs alone reduced the root and shoot length, biomass production, chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis related physiological parameters as well as macro-and micronutrients in a dose dependent manner. However, in case of biochar amendment, physiological parameters i.e., net photosynthesis rate, maximum photosynthesis rate, CO2 assimilation, dark respiration and stomatal conductance reduced only 16, 6, 7, 3 and 8%, respectively under AgNPs exposure at 1000 mg L−1 dose. Meanwhile, biochar at all exposure level of AgNPs decreased the bioaccumulation of Ag in rice root and shoot tissues, thus alleviated the phyto-toxic effects of NPs on plant growth. Moreover, results showed that biochar reduced the bioavailability of AgNPs by surface complexation, suppressing dissolution and release of toxic Ag+ ions in the growth medium. The presence of biochar at least decreased 2-fold tissue contents of Ag even at highest AgNPs (1000 mg L−1) concentration. These finding suggested that biochar derived from waste biomass resources can be used effectively to prevent the bioaccumulation and subsequent trophic level transfer of emerging Ag nano-pollutant in the environment.

The Bohai Sea, one of the largest marginal seas in China, is extensively influenced by human and industrial activities. The pollutant loads from anthropogenic activities have induced severe ecological problems. The study investigates the physicochemical characteristics of seawater and sediments in Bohai Bay and Laizhou Bay of the Bohai Sea. The diversity and composition of microbial community in sediments are analyzed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The sequencing results present 16 phyla and 31 classes from the samples. Proteobacteria constituted a dominant phylum, of which the classes of Gamma-, Delta-, and Epsilon-are predominant sub-divisions. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling related microbes present high abundance in both bays. The metabolism of organic matters is the main factor that influences the distribution of microbial communities in Bohai Bay, while the inflow of Yellow River is the dominant factor that influences the distribution of microbial communities in Laizhou Bay. Sulfur oxidizing process is expected to be positively influenced by heavy metals, while ammonia (NH4+) oxidizing process is prone to be negatively affected by heavy metals in both bays. Microbial communities in the offshore sediments of Laizhou Bay and the majority microbial communities in Bohai Bay sediments are subject to similar predominant controlling factors. This phenomenon is likely ascribed to ocean circulation. The results of this study can provide constructive guidelines on ecosystem management of marginal seas in Bohai and elsewhere.

In developing countries, many urban rivers are suffering from heavy contamination by untreated sewage, which implies great microbial risks. However, information regarding the bacterial pathogen diversity and distribution in urban rivers is highly limited. In this study, 41 water samples of fifteen rivers and eight samples from two sewage treatment plants in Changzhou City of Yangtze River Delta were sampled. Next-generation sequencing and a self-built reference pathogen database were used to investigate the diversity of enteric and environmental pathogens. The results indicated that the studied urban rivers were harboring diverse potential pathogen species, which primarily included enteric pathogens in Arcobacter and Bacteroides, and environmental pathogens in Acinetobacter, Aeromonas and Pseudomonas. Quantification of twelve pathogens/indicators of interest by qPCR showed that Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Campylobacter jejuni, Arcobacter cryaerophilus, Acinetobacter johnsonii, Acinetobacter lwoffii and Aeromonas spp. were abundant, with median values ranging from 3.30 to 5.85 log10 copies/100 mL, while Salmonella, Legionella pheumophila, Mycobacterium avium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were infrequently quantified. The pollution of nutrients and human intestinal microorganisms indicated by specific markers were found to be prevalent but with different levels in the rivers. The correlation analyses revealed that the diversity (p < 0.01) and concentrations (p < 0.05) of the enteric pathogens highly correlated to the human fecal marker abundances, which indicated that the enteric pathogens in the urban rivers were likely to have originated from domestic sewage. The environmental pathogens, which are different from the enteric ones, showed various distribution patterns, and some of them were more abundant in the rivers of rich nutrient. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the bacterial pathogen distribution and influencing factors in urban rivers that are impacted by domestic sewage, thereby establishing the foundation for urban water management.
