Targeting the removal of Pb²⁺ in wastewater, cellulosic materials were carbonized in an aerobic environment and activated via ion exchange. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 243.5 mg/g on an MCC-derived adsorbent activated with sodium acetate. The modified porous properties improved the adsorption capacity. The capacity could be completely recovered five times through elution with EDTA. Because of the negative effects of Ni, Mg, and Ca elements, the adsorption capacities of activated carbonized natural materials were lower than that of pure cellulose. N₂ adsorption measurement showed that the adsorbent had a large specific surface area as well as abundant micropores and 4-nm-sized mesopores. FTIR and surface potential results proved that carboxyl group was generated in the aerobic carbonization, and was deprotonated during ion exchange. This adsorbent consisted of C–C bonds as the building blocks and hydrophilic groups on the surface. XPS results demonstrated that the Pb 4f binding energies were reduced by 0.7–0.8 eV due to the interaction between Pb²⁺ and the activated adsorbent, indicating that the carboxylate groups bonded with Pb²⁺ through coordination interactions. Pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models were well fitted with the adsorption processes on the pristine and activated carbonized adsorbents, indicative of chemisorption on heterogeneous surfaces. The Freundlich expression agreed well with the data measured, and the pristine and activated adsorbents had weak and strong affinities for Pb²⁺, respectively. The Pb²⁺ adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous, and heat release determined the spontaneity. The adsorption capacity is attributed to the carboxylate groups and pores generated in the aerobic oxidation and ion exchange procedures.

As a redox-sensitive element, manganese (Mn) plays a critical role in Cd mobilization, especially in paddy soil. In an anoxic environment, the precipitation of Mn(II)-hydroxides specifically favors Cd retention, while draining the paddy fields results in substantial remobilization of Cd. However, how the change in Mn redox states during the periodical transit of anoxic to oxic systems affects Cd mobility remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that the radical effect generated during the oxidation of Mn(II)-hydroxides exerts a significant effect on the oxidative dissolution of Cd during the aeration of paddy soils. The extractable Cd concentration decreased rapidly during the reduction phases but increased upon oxidation, while Cd availability produced the opposite effect with soil pe + pH and the extractable Mn concentration. Inhibiting the oxidation of Mn(II)-containing phases by microbes suppressed the production of hydroxyl free radicals (•OH) and Cd mobilization in the drainage phase. Analysis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and sequential extraction demonstrated that the transformation from the Mn phase of Mn(II) to Mn(III/IV) determines Cd solubility. Altogether, the oxidization of Mn(II)-hydroxides was associated with the generation of significant amounts of •OH. The dissolution of Mn(II)- incorporating phases lead to a net release of Cd into soils during soil aeration.

Nitrous acid (HONO), an essential precursor of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the troposphere, plays an integral role in atmospheric photochemistry. However, potential HONO sources remain unclear, particularly in rural areas, where long-term (including seasonal) measurements are scarce. HONO and related parameters were measured at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) during the winter of 2017 and summer and autumn of 2020. The mean HONO level was higher in winter (1.79 ± 1.44 ppbv) than in summer (0.67 ± 0.50 ppbv) and autumn (0.83 ± 0.62 ppbv). Source analysis revealed that the heterogeneous conversion (including photo-enhanced conversion) of NO₂ on the ground surface dominated the daytime HONO production in the three seasons (43.1% in winter, 54.3% in summer, and 62.0% in autumn), and the homogeneous reaction of NO and OH contributed 37.8, 12.2, and 28.4% of the daytime HONO production during winter, summer, and autumn, respectively. In addition, the total contributions of other sources (direct vehicle emissions, particulate nitrate photolysis, NO₂ uptake and its photo-enhanced reaction on the aerosol surface) to daytime HONO production were less than 5% in summer and autumn and 12.0% in winter. Unlike winter and autumn, an additional HONO source was found in summer (0.45 ± 0.21 ppbv h⁻¹, 31.4% to the daytime HONO formation), which might be attributed to the HONO emission from the fertilized field. Among the primary radical sources (photolysis of HONO, O₃, and formaldehyde), HONO photolysis was dominant, with contributions of 82.6, 49.3, and 63.2% in winter, summer, and autumn, respectively. Our findings may aid in understanding HONO formation in different seasons in rural areas and may highlight the impact of HONO on atmospheric oxidation capacity.

The significant reduction in PM₂.₅ mass concentration after the outbreak of COVID-19 provided a unique opportunity further to study the formation mechanism of secondary inorganic aerosols. Hourly data of chemical components in PM₂.₅, gaseous pollutants, and meteorological data were obtained from January 1 to 23, 2020 (pre-lockdown) and January 24 to February 17, 2020 (COVID-lockdown) in Zhengzhou, China. Sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium were the main components of PM₂.₅ during both the pre-lockdown and COVID-lockdown periods. Compared with the pre-lockdown period, even though the concentration and proportion of nitrate decreased, nitrate was the dominant component in PM₂.₅ during the COVID-lockdown period. Moreover, nitrate production was enhanced by the elevated O₃ concentration, which was favorable for the homogeneous and hydrolysis nitrate formation despite the drastic decrease of NO₂. The proportion of sulfate during the COVID-lockdown period was higher than that before. Aqueous-phase reactions of H₂O₂ and transition metal (TMI) catalyzed oxidations were the major pathways for sulfate formation. During the COVID-lockdown period, TMI-catalyzed oxidation became the dominant pathway for aqueous-phase sulfate formation because the elevated acidity favored the dissolution of TMI. Therefore, the enhanced TMI-catalyzed oxidation affected by the elevated particle acidity dominated the sulfate formation, resulting in the slight increase of sulfate concentration during the COVID-lockdown period in Zhengzhou.

We investigated the biological response of soluble organic fraction (SOF) and water-soluble fraction (WSF) extracted from particulate matter (PM) emitted by an automotive diesel engine operating in a representative urban driving condition. The engine was fueled with ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), and its binary blends by volume with 13% of butanol (Bu13), and with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) at 13% (HVO13) and 20% (HVO20). Cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, oxidative DNA damage and ecotoxicity tests were carried out, and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) expressed as tbenzo(a)pyrene total toxicity equivalent (BaP-TEQ) were also analyzed. The Hepatocarcinoma epithelial cell line (HepG2) was exposed to SOF for 24 h and analyzed using comet assay, with the inclusion of formamidopyrimidine DNA glycosylase (FPG) and endonuclease III (Endo III) to recognize oxidized DNA bases. The WSF was evaluated through acute ecotoxicity tests with the aquatic microcrustacean Daphnia pulex (D. Pulex). Results showed that there was no cytotoxic activity for all tested SOF concentrations. Genotoxic responses by all the SOF samples were at same level, except for the HVO13 which was weaker in the absence of the enzymes. The addition of the FPG and Endo III enzymes resulted in a significant increase in the comet tail, indicating that the DNA damage from SOF for all tested fuel blends involves oxidative damage including a higher level of oxidized purines for ULSD and Bu13 in comparison with HVO blends, but the oxidized pyrimidines for HVO blends were slightly higher compared to Bu13. The WSF did not show acute ecotoxicity for any of the fuels. Unlike other samples, Bu13-derived particles significantly increase the BaP-TEQ. The contribution to the genotoxic activity and oxidative DNA from SOF was not correlated to BaP-TEQ, which means that the biological activity of PM might be affected also by other toxic compounds present in particulate phase.

Ractopamine, a synthetic β-adrenoreceptor agonist, is used as an animal feed additive to increase food conversion efficiency and accelerate lean mass accretion in farmed animals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration claimed that ingesting products containing ractopamine residues at legal dosages might not cause short-term harm to human health. However, the effect of ractopamine on chronic inflammatory diseases and atherosclerosis is unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of ractopamine on atherosclerosis and its action mechanism in apolipoprotein E-null (apoe⁻/⁻) mice and human endothelial cells (ECs) and macrophages. Daily treatment with ractopamine for four weeks increased the body weight and the weight of brown adipose tissues and gastrocnemius muscles. However, it decreased the weight of white adipose tissues in apoe⁻/⁻ mice. Additionally, ractopamine exacerbated hyperlipidemia and systemic inflammation, deregulated aortic cholesterol metabolism and inflammation, and accelerated atherosclerosis. In ECs, ractopamine treatment induced endothelial dysfunction and increased monocyte adhesion and transmigration across ECs. In macrophages, ractopamine dysregulated cholesterol metabolism by increasing oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) internalization and decreasing reverse cholesterol transporters, increasing oxLDL-induced lipid accumulation. Collectively, our findings revealed that ractopamine induces EC dysfunction and deregulated cholesterol metabolism of macrophages, which ultimately accelerates atherosclerosis progression.

The San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California has suffered persistent particulate matter (PM) pollution despite many years of control efforts. To further understand the chemical drivers of this problem and to support the development of State Implementation Plan for PM, a time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ToF-ACSM) outfitted with a PM₂.₅ lens and a capture vaporizer has been deployed at the Fresno-Garland air monitoring site of the California Air Resource Board (CARB) since Oct. 2018. The instrument measured non-refractory species in PM₂.₅ continuously at 10-min resolution. In this study, the data acquired from Oct. 2018 to May 2019 were analyzed to investigate the chemical characteristics, sources and atmospheric processes of PM₂.₅ in the SJV. Comparisons of the ToF-ACSM measurement with various co-located aerosol instruments show good agreements. The inter-comparisons indicated that PM₂.₅ in Fresno was dominated by submicron particles during the winter whereas refractory species accounted for a major fraction of PM₂.₅ mass during the autumn associated with elevated PM₁₀ loadings. A rolling window positive matrix factorization analysis was applied to the organic aerosol (OA) mass spectra using the Multilinear Engine (ME-2) algorithm. Three distinct OA sources were identified, including vehicle emissions, local and regional biomass burning, and formation of oxygenated species. There were significant seasonal variations in PM₂.₅ composition and sources. During the winter, residential wood burning and oxidation of nitrogen oxides were major contributors to the occurrence of haze episodes with PM₂.₅ dominated by biomass burning OA and nitrate. In autumn, agricultural activities and wildfires were found to be the main cause of PM pollution. PM₂.₅ concentrations decreased significantly after spring and were dominated by oxygenated OA during March to May. Our results highlight the importance of using seasonally dependent control strategies to mitigate PM pollution in the SJV.

The treatment of contaminants from lignocellulosic biorefinery effluent has recently been identified as a unique challenge. This study focuses on removing phenolic contaminants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from lignocellulosic biorefinery wastewater (BRW) applying a laccase-assisted approach. Cassava waste was used as a substrate to produce the maximum yield of laccase enzyme (3.9 U/g) from Pleurotus ostreatus. Among the different inducers supplemented, CuSO₄ (0.5 mM) showed an eight-fold increase in enzyme production (30.8 U/g) after 240 h of incubation. The catalytic efficiency of laccase was observed as 128.7 ± 8.47 S⁻¹mM⁻¹ for syringaldazine oxidation at optimum pH 4.0 and 40 °C. Laccase activity was completely inhibited by lead (II) ion, mercury (II) ion, sodium dodecyl sulphate, sodium azide and 1,4 dithiothretiol and induced significantly by manganese (II) ion and rhamnolipid. After treating BRW with laccase, the concentrations of PAHs and phenolic contaminants of 1144 μg/L and 46160 μg/L were reduced to 96 μg/L and 16100 μg/L, respectively. The ability of laccase to effectively degrade PAHs in the presence of different phenolic compounds implies that phenolic contaminants may play a role in PAHs degradation. After 240 h, organic contaminants were removed from BRW in the following order: phenol >2,4-dinitrophenol > 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol > 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol > acenaphthene > fluorine > phenanthrene > fluoranthene > pyrene > anthracene > chrysene > naphthalene > benzo(a)anthracene > benzo(a)pyrene > benzo(b)fluoranthene > pentachlorophenol > indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene > benzo(j) fluoranthene > benzo[k]fluoranthène. The multiple contaminant remediation from the BRW by enzymatic method, clearly suggests that the laccase can be used as a bioremediation tool for the treatment of wastewater from various industries.

In this study, we assessed the impact of zinc oxide (ZnO) and iron oxide (FeO) (<36 nm) nanoparticles (NPs) as well as their sulphate salt (bulk) counterpart (0, 25, 100 mg/kg) on rice growth and seed quality as well as the microbial community in the rhizosphere environment of rice. During the rice growing season 2021–22, all experiments were conducted in a greenhouse (temperature: day 30 °C; night 20 °C; relative humidity: 70%; light period: 16 h/8 h, day/night) in rice field soil. Results showed that low concentrations of FeO and ZnO NPs (25 mg/kg) promoted rice growth (height (29%, 16%), pigment content (2%, 3%)) and grain quality parameters such as grains per spike (8%, 9%), dry weight of grains (12%, 14%) respectively. As compared to the control group, the Zn (2%) and Fe (5%) accumulations at their respective low concentrations of NP treatments showed stimulation. Interestingly, our results showed that at low concentration of both the NPs the soil microbes had more diversity and richness than those in the bulk treated and control soil group. Although a number of phyla were affected by the presence of NPs, the strongest effects were observed for change in the abundance of the three phyla for Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Planctomycetes. The rhizosphere environment was notably enriched with potential streptomycin producers, carbon and nitrogen fixers, and lignin degraders with regard to functional groups of microorganisms. However, microbial communities mainly responsible for chitin degradation, ammonia oxidation, and nitrite reduction were found to be decreased. The results from this study highlight significant changes in several plant-based endpoints, as well as the rhizosphere soil microorganisms. It further adds information to our understanding of the nanoscale-specific impacts of important micronutrient oxides on both rice and its associated soil microbiome.

Microorganisms are essential for modifying arsenic morphology, mobility, and toxicity. Still, knowledge of the microorganisms responsible for arsenic metabolism in specific arsenic-contaminated fields, such as metallurgical plants is limited. We sampled on-field soils from three depths at 70 day intervals to explore the distribution and transformation of arsenic in the soil. Arsenic-metabolizing microorganisms were identified from the mapped gene sequences. Arsenic metabolism pathways were constructed with metagenomics and AsChip analysis (a high-throughput qPCR chip for arsenic metabolism genes). It has been shown in the result that 350 genera of arsenic-metabolizing microorganisms carrying 17 arsenic metabolism genes in field soils were identified, as relevant to arsenic reduction, arsenic methylation, arsenic respiration, and arsenic oxidation, respectively. Arsenic reduction genes were the only genes shared by the 10 high-ranking arsenic-metabolizing microorganisms. Arsenic reduction genes (arsABCDRT and acr3) accounted for 73.47%–78.11% of all arsenic metabolism genes. Such genes dominated arsenic metabolism, mediating the reduction of 14.11%–19.86% of As(V) to As(III) in 0–100 cm soils. Arsenic reduction disrupts microbial energy metabolism, DNA replication and repair and membrane transport. Arsenic reduction led to a significant decrease in the abundance of 17 arsenic metabolism genes (p < 0.0001). The critical role of arsenic-reducing microorganisms in the migration and transformation of arsenic in metallurgical field soils, was emphasized with such results. These results were of pronounced significance for understanding the transformation behavior of arsenic and the precise regulation of arsenic in field soil.
