The Bacillus licheniformis strain YX2, a novel nitrobenzene-degrading halophilic bacterium, was isolated from active sludge obtained from a pesticide factory. Strain YX2 can withstand highly acidic and alkaline conditions and high temperatures. Degradation of nitrobenzene (200mgL−1) by YX2 exceeded 70% after 72h in lysogeny broth medium (pH 4–9). Under optimal degradation conditions (33°C, pH 7 in LB medium) YX2 degraded 50, 100, 200, and 600mgL−1 nitrobenzene within 36, 36, 72, and 156h, respectively. Even in the presence of benzene, phenol or aniline, strain YX2 efficiently degraded nitrobenzene. Furthermore, strain YX2 completely degraded 600mgL−1 nitrobenzene in 7% NaCl (w/w). Thus, our data show that strain YX2 may have promise for removing nitrobenzene from complex wastewaters with high salinity and variable pH.

A microfluidic chip was designed to assess the toxicity of pollutants in a high-throughput way by using marine phytoplankton motility as a sensor signal. In this chip, multiple gradient generators (CGGs) with diffusible chambers enable large scale of dose-response bioassays to be performed in a simple way. Two mobile marine phytoplankton cells were confined on-chip and stimulated by 8 concentrations (generated by CGG) of Hg, Pb, Cu and phenol singly, as well as Cu and phenol jointly. CASA system was used to characterize motility by motile percentage (%MOT), curvilinear velocity (VCL), average path velocity (VAP) and straight line velocity (VSL). In all cases, dose-dependent inhibitions of motility were observed. In the present system, only 2h was needed to predict EC50. Thus, the developed microfluidic chip device was proved to be useful as a rapid/simple and high-throughput test method in marine pollution toxicity assessment.

Treated and untreated rice straw extensively exists in the soil. In order to elucidate its possible effect on the fate of organic pollutants, sorption of pyrene by rice straw and its main constituents (lignin, cellulose, and hemi-cellulose) were studied, as single solute and in the presence of other co-existing organic pollutants, phenanthrene (Phen), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), phenol, and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Pyrene showed the greatest sorption on lignin with greater aromaticity and smaller polarity, and the sorption coefficient was almost two orders of magnitude greater than those on cellulose and hemi-cellulose. Bi-solute sorption results showed that Phen, BaP and PCP exhibited apparent competitive sorption with pyrene on the four sorbents; while the existence of phenol promoted the sorption of pyrene on rice straw and lignin but inhibited the sorption on cellulose and hemi-cellulose. For the two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) co-solutes and PCP, hydrophobicity and molecular size played important roles in competition, suggesting the direct competition for hydrophobic sorption sites and pore blockage mechanisms. In contrast, the polar co-solute, phenol showed different effects on pyrene sorption onto the four sorbents, suggesting that multiple interactions between polar organic compounds and sorbents are involved in the sorption.

Particles derived from humic acid, as p(HA), are synthesized in a single step via a water-in-oil microemulsion system employing different cross-linkers such as divinylsulfone (DVS), glutaraldehyde (GA), epichlorohydrine (ECH), and adipochloride (AC). The different phenolic groups on humic moieties are connected via these cross-linkers to form particles. The prepared p(HA) particles were successfully used in the removal of toxic organo-phenolic such as phenol (Ph), 4-nitrophenol (4-NPh), 4-chlorophenol (4-CPh), 2-chlorophenol (2-CPh), and 2,3-dichlorophenol (2,3-CPh) from aqueous environments. Various parameters such as pH, contact time, reusability of particles, and the initial concentration of adsorbate are investigated. It is found that the absorption capacity of p(HA) particles for Ph is 180 mg/g, and the maximum absorption amount is obtained at pH 6. Furthermore, the reuse experiments are shown that p(HA) particles can release the absorbed Ph by the treatment of methanol, and an absorption capacity of 85 % is attainable up to five consecutive absorption and release cycles. p(HA) particles are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques.

In this work, a mesoporous carbon material was modified by nitrogen atom by two different ways. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the N atoms at the surface mainly exist in pyridine- and pyridone-like forms (around 80 % in atom ratio). The adsorption capacity of phenol and nicotine on mesoporous carbon and two N-containing mesoporous carbons was studied through adsorption isotherms. The adsorption isotherms were interpreted by three models (Freundlich, Langmuir, and Sips equations). Heat-flow microcalorimetry in liquid phase was used to determine the bonding strength between the organic pollutants and the surface of the adsorbents. In addition, the possibility of regeneration of adsorbents was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The obtained values of differential heats and isotherms showed the heterogeneous properties of the mesoporous carbon materials. Comparing the different results obtained from the experiments, the surface area is a key factor for the adsorption of phenol and nicotine in water. The introduction of N improved the adsorption of phenol but did not affect the adsorption of nicotine.

The simultaneous removal of phenol and ammonium using heterotrophic nitrifying-denitrifying bacterium Serratia sp. LJ-1 was investigated. The maximum removal rates of ammonium nitrogen and phenol were 1.08 ± 0.05 and 2.14 ± 0.08 mg L⁻¹ h⁻¹, respectively. The ammonium oxidation had much higher tolerance to phenol toxicity than that of the autotrophic nitrifying bacteria. The increase in phenol concentration led to an increase in ammonium oxidation rate under the phenol concentration of 600 mg L⁻¹. The increase in ammonium concentration caused an increase in phenol biodegradation rate under the ammonium nitrogen concentration of 150 mg L⁻¹. Maximum rates of phenol biodegradation and total nitrogen removal in the treatments with nitrification metabolite (nitrate or nitrite) as the sole nitrogen source were more than 30 % lower than those of the treatment with ammonium as the sole nitrogen source. Ammonium was removed through nitrification and subsequent aerobic denitrification while phenol was biodegraded through the ortho-cleavage pathway and subsequently mineralized. Since phenol often coexists with nitrogen pollutants, these findings have significant environmental implications in terms of the simultaneous removal of these contaminants.

Adsorptive water purification methods were studied for the removal of phenol-type compounds (such as phenol/thymol) and humic acid applying sodium bentonite modified by cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB). The effect of humic acid on adsorption of phenols was examined in pure and model thermal water. It was found that the efficiency of the removal of individual pollutants can be highly influenced if another pollutant is present. The main reason for the increased efficiency was identified by the means of infrared spectroscopy which proved that each pollutant modifies decisively the organophilicity of the clay surface. Furthermore, the studies performed in model thermal waters revealed that the presence of specific cations could further increase the removability of these pollutants.

Many of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are operated by biological process with their excellent performances. However, the early warning system in the influent line is required to avoid the process malfunction because the biological wastewater treatment system has serious drawback to toxic chemicals in the influent. In order to develop a new type of biosensor using anaerobic granules in an online device for rapid detection of toxic inhibitory to the biological process, a porous pot reactor and an anaerobic granule biosensor (AGB) were demonstrated as an upset early warning device (UEWD) in this study. In the first group of toxic loading tests, the prepared cupric chloride solutions were separately injected into both the porous pot and AGB systems at six different concentrations, and phenol solutions were used at three different concentrations in the second group of tests. The results showed the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (ammonia-N) removal efficiency from porous pot reactor decreased dramatically in response to the addition of Cu²⁺and phenol with the variation of the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in AGB. The response of AGB system was 6 to 20 h in advance of porous pot reactor performance response, which suggests that the AGB could potentially be used as an online UEWD.

A novel photocatalytic reactor for wastewater treatment was designed and constructed. The main part of the reactor was an aluminum tube in which 12 stainless steel circular baffles and four quartz tube were placed inside of the reactor like shell and tube heat exchangers. Four UV–C lamps were housed within the space of the quartz tubes. Surface of the baffles was coated with TiO₂. A simple method was employed for TiO₂ immobilization, while the characterization of the supported photocatalyst was based on the results obtained through performing some common analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and BET. Phenol was selected as a model pollutant. A solution of a known initial concentration (20, 60, and 100 ppmv) was introduced to the reactor. The reactor also has a recycle flow to make turbulent flow inside of the reactor. The selected recycle flow rate was 7 × 10⁻⁵ m³.s⁻¹, while the flow rate of feed was 2.53 × 10⁻⁷, 7.56 × 10⁻⁷, and 1.26 × 10⁻⁶ m³.s⁻¹, respectively. To evaluate performance of the reactor, response surface methodology was employed. A four-factor three-level Box–Behnken design was developed to evaluate the reactor performance for degradation of phenol. Effects of phenol inlet concentration (20–100 ppmv), pH (3–9), liquid flow rate (2.53 × 10⁻⁷−1.26 × 10⁻⁶ m³.s⁻¹), and TiO₂ loading (8.8–17.6 g.m⁻²) were analyzed with this method. The adjusted R ² value (0.9936) was in close agreement with that of corresponding R ² value (0.9961). The maximum predicted degradation of phenol was 75.50 % at the optimum processing conditions (initial phenol concentration of 20 ppmv, pH ∼ 6.41, and flow rate of 2.53 × 10⁻⁷ m³.s⁻¹ and catalyst loading of 17.6 g.m⁻²). Experimental degradation of phenol determined at the optimum conditions was 73.7 %. XRD patterns and SEM images at the optimum conditions revealed that crystal size is approximately 25 nm and TiO₂ nanoparticles with visible agglomerates distribute densely and uniformly over the surface of stainless steel substrate. BET specific surface area of immobilized TiO₂ was 47.2 and 45.8 m² g⁻¹ before and after the experiments, respectively. Reduction in TOC content, after steady state condition, showed that maximum phenol decomposition occurred at neutral condition (pH ∼ 6).

Laboratory-scale batch, vertical, and horizontal column experiments were conducted to investigate the attenuative capacity of a fine-grained clayey soil of local origin in the surrounding of a steel plant wastewater discharge site in West Bengal, India, for removal of phenol. Linear, Langmuir, and Freundlich isotherm plots from batch experimental data revealed that Freundlich isotherm model was reasonably fitted (R² = 0.94). The breakthrough column experiments were also carried out with different soil bed heights (5, 10, and 15 cm) under uniform flow to study the hydraulic movements of phenol by evaluating time concentration flow behavior using bromide as a tracer. The horizontal migration test was also conducted in the laboratory using adsorptive phenol and nonreactive bromide tracer to explore the movement of solute in a horizontal distance. The hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients (D) in the vertical and horizontal directions in the soil were estimated using nonlinear least-square parameter optimization method in CXTFIT model. In addition, the equilibrium convection dispersion model in HYDRUS 1D was also examined to simulate the fate and transport of phenol in vertical and horizontal directions using Freundlich isotherm constants and estimated hydrodynamic parameters as input in the model. The model efficacy and validation were examined through statistical parameters such as the coefficient of determination (R²), root mean square error and design of index (d).
