Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) are important pollutants that contaminate agricultural soils. We determined the effects of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) on the production of reactive oxygen species, photosynthesis, and activity of antioxidant enzymes in wheat planted in fluvo-aquic soils. DBP- and DEHP-induced oxidative stress decreased the values of the photosynthetic/fluorescence parameters (except for intercellular carbon dioxide concentration) and chlorophyll content at the seedling, jointing, and booting stages. Moreover, the non-stomatal factor responsible for the net decrease in photosynthetic efficiency was identified as the decrease in fluorescence resulting from the decreased amount of chlorophyll a returning from the excited to the ground energy state. The content of superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide in wheat leaves and roots increased with increasing DBP and DEHP supplementation, compared to the control. Antioxidant enzyme activities in the leaves and roots at the seedling stage increased at DBP and DEHP levels of 10 and 20 mg kg⁻¹, respectively, and the enzyme activities at the jointing and booting stages increased with increasing concentrations of the chemicals, compared to the control. These results demonstrated that increased levels of antioxidant enzymes play a significant role in protecting plant growth under DBP and DEHP stress.

Abandoned nonferrous metal(loid) tailings sites are anthropogenic, and represent unique and extreme ecological niches for microbial communities. Tailings contain elevated and toxic content of metal(loid)s that had negative effects on local human health and regional ecosystems. Microbial communities in these typical tailings undergoing natural attenuation are often very poorly examined. The diversity and inferred functions of bacterial communities were examined at seven nonferrous metal(loid) tailings sites in Guangxi (China), which were abandoned between 3 and 31 years ago. The acidity of the tailings sites rose over 31 years of site inactivity. Desulfurivibrio, which were always coupled with sulfur/sulfide oxidation to dissimilate the reduction of nitrate/nitrite, were specific in tailings with 3 years abandonment. However, genus beneficial to plant growth (Rhizobium), and iron/sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and metal(loid)-related genera (Acidiferrobacter and Acidithiobacillus) were specific within tailings abandoned for 23 years or more. The increased abundance of acid-generating iron/sulfur-oxidizing and metal(loid)-related bacteria and specific bacterial communities during the natural attenuation could provide new insights for understanding microbial ecosystem functioning in mine tailings. OTUs related to Sulfuriferula, Bacillus, Sulfurifustis, Gaiella, and Thiobacillus genera were the main contributors differentiating the bacterial communities between the different tailing sites. Multiple correlation analyses between bacterial communities and geochemical parameters indicated that pH, TOC, TN, As, Pb, and Cu were the main drivers influencing the bacterial community structures. PICRUSt functional exploration revealed that the main functions were related to DNA repair and recombination, important functions for bacterial adaptation to cope with the multi-contamination of tailings. Such information provides new insights to guide future metagenomic studies for the identification of key functions beyond metal-transformation/resistance. As well, our results offers novel outlooks for the management of bacterial communities during natural attenuation of multi-contaminated nonferrous metal(loid) tailings sites.

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution and soil trace metal (TM) contamination are binary environmental issues harming ecosystems and human health, especially in the developing China with rapid urbanization and industrialization. Since PMs contain TMs, the air-soil nexus should be investigated synthetically. Although the PMs and airborne TMs are mainly emitted from urban or industrial areas, they can reach the rural and remote mountain areas owing to the ability of long-range transport. After dry or wet deposition, they will participate in the terrestrial biogeochemical cycles of TMs in various soil-plant systems, including urban soil-greening trees, agricultural soil-food crops, and mountain soil-natural forest systems. Besides the well-known root uptake, the pathway of leaf deposition and foliar absorption contribute significantly to the plant TM accumulation. Moreover, the aerosols can also exert climatic effects by absorption and scattering of solar radiation and by the cloud condensation nuclei activity, thereby indirectly impact plant growth and probably crop TM accumulation through photosynthesis, and then threat health. In particular, this systematic review summarizes the interactions of PMs-TMs in soil-plant systems including the deposition, transfer, accumulation, toxicity, and mechanisms among them. Finally, current knowledge gaps and prospective are proposed for future research agendas. These analyses would be conducive to improving urban air quality and managing the agricultural and ecological risks of airborne metals.

The distribution pattern of root-associated bacteria in native plant growth in tailing dumps with extreme conditions remains poorly understood and largely unexplored. Herein we chose a native plant, Bidens bipinnata, growing on both an Sb tailing dump (WKA) and adjacent normal soils (WKC) to in-depth understand the distribution pattern of root-associated bacteria and their responses on environmental factors. We found that the rhizosphere microbial diversity indices in the tailing dump were significantly different from that in the adjacent soil, and that such variation was significantly related with soil nutrients (TC, TOC, TN) and metal(loid) concentrations (Sb and As). Some dominant genera were significant enriched in WKA, suggesting their adaption to harsh environments. Notably, these genera are proposed to be involved in nutrient and metal(liod) cycling, such as nitrogen fixing (Devosia, Cellvibrio, Lysobacter, and Cohnella), P solubilizing (Flavobacterium), and Sb and As oxidation (Paenibacillus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Thiobacillus). Our results suggest that certain root-associated bacteria in tailing dump were governed by soil edaphic factors and play important ecological roles in nutrient amendments and metal cycling for the successful colonization of Bidens bipinnata in this tailing dump.

Agricultural soil is one of the main sink for both heavy metals and nanomaterials (NMs). Whether NMs can impact heavy metals uptake or bioaccumulation in plants is unknown. Here, cucumber plants were cultivated in a multi-heavy metals contaminated soil amended with four types of NMs (SiO2, TiO2, ZnS and MoS2) separately for four weeks. Physiological and biochemical parameters were determined to investigate the impact of NMs on plant growth. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed to determine the metal content in plants. Results showed that none of the tested NMs impacted plants biomass, but all the NMs showed different degrees of reduction in heavy metals bioaccumulation in plant roots, stems and leaves. However, four NMs showed different degrees of reduction in macro and micro nutrients uptake. MoS2 decreased the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Al, Ti and Pb) for 36.4–60.6% and nutrients (Mg, Fe, K, Si and Mn) for 40.1%–50.1% in roots. Exposure to MoS2 NMs also significantly increased 23.4% of Si in leaves, 205.6% and 83.9% of Mo in roots and stems, respectively. In general, the results of this study showed promising potential for NMs to reduce uptake of heavy metals in crop plants, especially MoS2 NMs. However, the negative impacts of perturbing nutrients uptake should be paid attention as well.

Rapid development in nanotechnology and incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in wide range of consumer products causing the considerable release of these NPs in the environment, leading concerns for ecosystem safety and plant health. In this study, rice (Oryza sativa) was exposed to AgNPs (0, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 mg L−1) in biochar amended (2 %w/v) and un-amended systems. Exposure of plants to AgNPs alone reduced the root and shoot length, biomass production, chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis related physiological parameters as well as macro-and micronutrients in a dose dependent manner. However, in case of biochar amendment, physiological parameters i.e., net photosynthesis rate, maximum photosynthesis rate, CO2 assimilation, dark respiration and stomatal conductance reduced only 16, 6, 7, 3 and 8%, respectively under AgNPs exposure at 1000 mg L−1 dose. Meanwhile, biochar at all exposure level of AgNPs decreased the bioaccumulation of Ag in rice root and shoot tissues, thus alleviated the phyto-toxic effects of NPs on plant growth. Moreover, results showed that biochar reduced the bioavailability of AgNPs by surface complexation, suppressing dissolution and release of toxic Ag+ ions in the growth medium. The presence of biochar at least decreased 2-fold tissue contents of Ag even at highest AgNPs (1000 mg L−1) concentration. These finding suggested that biochar derived from waste biomass resources can be used effectively to prevent the bioaccumulation and subsequent trophic level transfer of emerging Ag nano-pollutant in the environment.

Biochar as a porous carbon material could be used for improving soil physical and chemical properties, while insufficient attention has been paid to potential risks induced by infiltration of heavy metals in the runoff water flowing through biochar-amended soil. Four different soil-biochar matrices with same volumes were constructed including soil alone (M1), biochar alone (M2), soil-biochar layering (M3) and soil-biochar mixing (M4). Leaching experiments were conducted with Pb, Cu, and Zn contaminated runoff water. Results showed that biochar amendment greatly improved the water permeation, and the infiltration rates in M2, M3, and M4 were 2.85–23.0 mm min⁻¹, being much higher than those in M1 (1.33–4.05 mm min⁻¹), though the rates decreased as the leaching volumes increased. However, biochar induced more Pb, Cu, and Zn infiltrated through soil-biochar matrix. After 350-L leaching, M1 retained about 95% Pb, 90% Cu, and 36% Zn, while M2 only retained 4.80% Pb, 17.4% Cu, and 4.01% Zn; about 30% Pb, 80% Cu, and 15% Zn were retained in M3 and M4. Notably, Zn was trapped first and then re-leached into the filtrate, which resulted in a much higher effluent Zn than the influent Zn at the later stage. However, the unit weight of biochar showed a higher capacity for retaining heavy metals compared to per unit of soil. Under the dynamic water flow, all benefits and disadvantages induced by biochar were weakened with its physical disintegration. Biochar as soil amendment can enhance plant growth via ameliorating soil structure, while it would pose risks to environment because of large penetration of heavy metals. If biochar was compacted to form a denser physical structure, perhaps more heavy metals could be retained.

Iron fertilizers are worthy to be studied due to alleviate the Fe deficiency. Different forms of iron oxide nanoparticles are selected to better understand possible particle applications as an Fe source for crop plants. In this study, we assessed the different effects of γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs on the physiology and fruit quality of muskmelon plants in a pot experiment for five weeks. Results showed that no increased iron content was found under NPs treatment in root, stem, leaf and fruit, except 400 mg/L Fe3O4 NPs had a higher iron content in muskmelon root. With the extension of NPs exposure, both γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs began to promote plant growth. In addition, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs could increase chlorophyll content at a certain stage of exposure. Happily, 200 mg/L γ-Fe2O3 NPs and 100, 200 mg/L Fe3O4 NPs significantly increased fruit weight of muskmelon by 9.1%, 9.4% and 11.5%. It is noteworthy that both γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs caused positive effects on VC content, particularly 100 mg/L Fe3O4 NPs increased the VC content by 46.95%. To the best of our knowledge, little research has been done on the effect of nanoparticles on the whole physiological cycle and fruit quality of melon. The assessment of physiology and fruit quality of muskmelon plants in vitro upon γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs exposure could lay a foundation for NPs potential impact at every growth period of muskmelon plants.

There are global concerns about heavy metal (HM) contamination in soils, which in turn has produced an increased demand for soil remediation. Biochar has been widely documented to effectively immobilize metals in contaminated soils and has received increasing attention for use in soil remediation. Here, we review recent progresses in understanding metal-biochar interactions in soils, potential risks associated with biochar amendment, and application of biochar in soil remediation in China. These recent studies indicate that: (1) the remediation effect depends on the characteristics of both biochar and soil and their interactions; (2) biochar applications could decrease the mobility/bioavailability of HMs in soils and HM accumulation in plants; and (3) despite its advantages, biochar applications could pose ecological and health risks, e.g., by releasing toxic substances into soils or by inhalation of biochar dust. Research gaps still exist in the development of practical methods for preparing and applying different biochars that target specific HMs. In the future, the long term effects and security of biochar applications on soil remediation, soil organisms and plant growth need to be considered.

The environmental consequences of nano-CuO particles have gained significant attention in recent decades. Identification of the mechanisms for soil and plant responses with respect to the chemical speciation of nano-CuO (mainly the exchangeable and reducible fractions) remains scarce. Here, we analyzed different chemical speciation of Cu and DTPA-extractable Cu over 42 days in (1) control soil without Cu addition; (2) soil treated with nano-CuO particles; and (3) soil treated with CuSO₄ solution. The applied dose was 500 mg Cu kg⁻¹ and maize was grown in these soils. Plant growth was inhibited, but the inhibition by nano-CuO was slightly weaker compared to CuSO₄. Cu accumulations were similar in the roots for CuSO₄ and nano-CuO treatments, but significantly higher in the shoots for CuSO₄ treatment. This indicates that Cu from nano-CuO-treated soils mainly accumulated in roots but rarely transferred to shoots. Enzyme activities on the rhizoplane visualized by zymography were strongly depressed by CuSO₄ but slightly inhibited by nano-CuO. Microbial community diversity measured by 16S rRNA was the lowest in CuSO₄-treated soils among three treatments. These results were explained by the following mechanisms: (1) Gradual increases of DTPA-extractable and exchangeable Cu were found in nano-CuO-treated soil, and the final concentrations at day 42 were only half of those in CuSO₄-treated soil; (2) Enzyme activities on the rhizoplane were positively related to soil pH and negatively correlated with DTPA-extractable and exchangeable Cu; (3) Even though reducible Cu in nano-CuO-treated soils was 1.3 times higher than in CuSO₄-treated soils, indicating stronger nano-accrued oxidative stress in nano-CuO-treated soils, the toxicity induced by nano-CuO particles was still weaker than CuSO₄. Nevertheless, the toxicity of Cu particles to plants and microbes mainly depends on the gradually-released bioavailable Cu. This demonstrates the greater importance of bioavailable Cu concentrations for toxicity modulation rather than the scale of Cu particles.
