Development of Eco-friendly Adsorbent Pellets from Low Fire Clay and Potato Starch for Potential Use in Methylene Blue Removal in Aquaculture

Mesoporous clay-starch ceramic pellets have been prepared using silica-rich low fire clay and potato starch as a pore-forming agent. The ceramic pellets prepared using 30% starch, showed the highest porosity and lowest compressive strength among all the different pellets. Batch mode studies using the pellets showed higher methylene blue adsorption capacity with an increase in time and increased initial dye concentration. The adsorption capacity was found to decrease with increasing pellet dose, while pH had a negligible effect on methylene blue removal which makes them a suitable adsorbent in both acidic and basic mediums. Adsorption isotherm analysis of the process was followed by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm whereas the kinetics analysis fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. A low-cost, simple device was made from a stainless-steel wire mesh with mesoporous ceramic pellets enclosed in it, which can easily be dipped and taken out of an aquarium and can remove methylene blue from water.

Soil contamination with antibiotics and antibiotic resistant bacteria/genes (ARB/ARGs) has becoming an emerging environmental problem. Moreover, the mixed pollutants' transfer and accumulation from soil to tuberous vegetables has posed a great threat against food security and human health. In this work, the application of two absorbing materials (maize biochar and sulfate modified eggshell) was able to reduce the poisonous effect of soil antibiotics on potato root system by stimulate the dissipation of water-soluble antibiotics in soil; and also improve food quality by increasing potato starch, protein, fat, and vitamins. Meanwhile, both amendments could effectively decrease the classes and the accumulative abundance of ARB and ARGs (sulI, sulII, catI, catII, ermA, ermB) in the edible parts of potato. The lowest abundance of ARGs was detected in the biochar application treatment, with the accumulative ARG level of 8.9 × 10² and 7.2 × 10² copies mL⁻¹ in potato peel (sull + catI + ermA) and tuberous root (sulI), respectively. It is the first study to demonstrate the feasibility of biochar and eggshell derived from agricultural wastes as green absorbing materials to reduce soil antibiotic, ARB, and ARGs accumulation risk in tuberous vegetable.

Wastewater from textile industry contains a number of pollutants which are hazardous in nature. The direct discharge of the wastewater into the environment affects its ecological status by causing various undesirable changes. As environmental fortification becomes a global anxiety, industries are finding novel solutions for mounting low-cost and environmental-friendly technologies for the dye removal from the waste. The presence of the dyes hinders sunlight penetration and disturbs the ecosystem of water. However, the treatment of wastewater with biodegradable polymer attains a vital importance as they are environmental friendly. The main objective of the work was to make an effort to develop a feasible process for the removal of dyes/color from the textile wastewater by using potato starch, which is a plant-based bio-polymer. A three-level, full-factorial design was selected, and experiments were conducted using a jar test apparatus. The main effects and interactions of dosage, pH, and temperature on the percentage color removal were analyzed. Reduction in color was analyzed using UV-2800 spectrophotometer. A three-way significant interaction was observed. However, dosage is found to be the most important parameter for dye removal using potato starch.
