Huelva is a highly industrialized city in SW Spain hosting, among others, a Cu smelter, a phosphate fertilizer plant, a power plant, and oil refineries. This study aims to evaluate metal concentrations in lichens as bioindicators of atmospheric pollution in the impacted urban areas. Xanthoria parietina species from Huelva and nearby villages, as well as reference samples from remote, non-contaminated urban areas, were analyzed for trace elements (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, As, Cd, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Pb, Th, U) using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry; and for major elements (Ca, K, Mg, P, and S) by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry after acid digestion.The metal composition of X. parietina exhibits spatial distribution patterns with extremely elevated concentrations (Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Ba, Pb, U, and S) in the surroundings of the industrial estates to <1 km distance. Mean concentrations were significantly lower in the urban areas >1 km from the pollution sources. However, air pollution persists in the urban areas up to 4 km away, as the mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb and S remained considerably elevated in comparison to the reference samples. Though rigorous source apportionment analysis was not the aim of this study, a good positive correlation of our results with metal abundances in ambient particulate matter and in pollution sources points to the Cu smelter as the main source of pollution. Hence, the severe air pollution affecting Huelva and nearby urban areas may be considered a serious health risk to local residents.

Fly ash (FA), a solid waste generated in thermal power plants, is considered an environmental pollutant. Therefore, measures must be taken to dispose of FA in an environmentally friendly manner. In this paper, an electrospinning technique was employed to incorporate FA particles onto zinc oxide nanofibers (ZnO NFs), and the product (FA/ZnO composite) was used for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from the water. Herein, ZnO NFs may serve as effective semiconductor photocatalysts and provide sufficient surface area for FA, while the FA particles serve as an effective adsorbent. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic efficiency of the as-synthesized nanocomposite fibers were enhanced compared to those of the pristine ZnO NFs, and this result is attributed to the uniform distribution of FA on the surface of the ZnO NFs. The as-synthesized nanocomposite could have great significance in wastewater treatment.

Radioactive contamination of the natural areas is one of the most long-lasting anthropogenic impacts on the environment. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a promising organism for radiation-related research because of its high radiosensitivity, but the genome size of Pinacea species has imposed obstacles for high-throughput studies so far. In this work, we conducted the analysis of the de novo assembled transcriptome of Scots pine populations growing in the Chernobyl-affected zone, which is still today contaminated with radionuclides because of the accident at the nuclear power plant in 1986. The transcriptome profiles indicate a clear pattern of adaptive stress response, which seems to be dose-dependent. The transcriptional response indicates a continuous modulation of the cellular redox system, enhanced expression of chaperones and histones, along with the control of ions balance. Interestingly, the activity of transposable element families is inversely correlated to the exposure levels to radiation. These adaptive responses, which are triggered by radiation doses 30 times lower than the one accepted as a safe for biota species by international regulations, suggest that the environmental management in radiation protection should be reviewed.

Atmospheric mercury (Hg) poses human health and ecological risks once deposited and bio-accumulated through food chains. Source contribution analysis of Hg deposition is essential to formulating emission control strategies to alleviate the adverse impact of Hg release from anthropogenic sources. In this study, a Hg version of California Puff Dispersion Modeling (denoted as CALPUFF-Hg) system with added Hg environmental processes was implemented to simulate the Hg concentration and deposition in the central region of the Pearl River Delta (cPRD) at 1 km × 1 km resolution. The contributions of eight source sectors to Hg deposition were evaluated. Model results indicated that the emission from cement production was the largest contributor to Hg deposition, accounting for 13.0%, followed by coal-fired power plants (6.5%), non-ferrous metal smelting (5.4%), iron and steel production (3.5%), and municipal solid waste incineration (3.4%). The point sources that released a higher fraction of gaseous oxidized mercury, such as cement production and municipal solid waste incineration, were the most significant contributors to local deposition. In this intensive industrialized region, large point sources contributed 67–94% of total Hg deposition of 6 receptors which were the nearest grid-cells from top five Hg emitters of the domain and the largest municipal solid waste incinerator in Guangzhou. Based on the source apportionment results, cement production and the rapidly growing municipal solid waste incineration are identified as priority sectors for Hg emission control in the cPRD region.

Emission inventories are critical to understanding the sources of air pollutants, but have high uncertainties in China due in part to insufficient on-site measurements. In this study, we developed a method of examining, screening and applying online data from the country's improving continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) to reevaluate a “bottom-up” emission inventory of China's coal-fired power sector. The benefits of China's current national emission standards and ultra-low emission policy for the sector were quantified assuming their full implementation. The derived national average emission factors of SO₂, NOₓ and particulate matter (PM) were 1.00, 1.00 and 0.25 kg/t-coal respectively for 2015 based on CEMS data, smaller than those of previous studies that may not fully recognize improved emission controls in recent years. The annual emissions of SO₂, NOₓ and PM from the sector were recalculated at 1321, 1430 and 334 Gg respectively, 75%, 63% and 76% smaller than our estimates based on a previous approach without the benefit of CEMS data. The results imply that online measurement with proper data screening can better track the recent progress of emission controls. The emission intensity (the ratio of emissions to economic output) of Northwest China was larger than that of other regions, attributed mainly to its less intensive economy and industry. Transmission of electricity to more-developed eastern provinces raised the energy consumption and emissions of less-developed regions. Judged by 95 percentiles of flue-gas concentrations measured by CEMS, most power plants met the current national emission standards in 2015 except for those in Northwest and Northeast China, while plants that met the ultra-low emission policy were much scarcer. National SO₂, NOₓ and PM emissions would further decline by 68%, 55% and 81% respectively if the ultra-low emission policy can be strictly implemented, implying the great potential of the policy for emission abatement.

Three soil core samples were collected from a forest located about 1.1 km south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) boundary in 2017, and the vertical profiles of 129I from the FDNPP accident were determined by the combination of TMAH (tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide) extraction and ICP-MS/MS analysis. The humus layer above the soil layer was heavily contaminated with 134Cs (1983–5985 Bq g−1) and 137Cs (1947–5902 Bq g−1) (decay-corrected to March 11, 2011). The 129I activity concentrations decreased sharply with the soil depth, from 1894 to 34.1, from 9384 to 78.9, and from 2536 to 51.3 mBq kg−1, for the three sites. Downward migration of 129I was slightly faster than the one of 134Cs. In addition, the cumulative 129I inventories were observed to be 43.4 ± 1.0, 71.7 ± 1.8, and 56.5 ± 1.8 Bq m−2, respectively. Subsequently, the cumulative 131I inventories were estimated to be 1.76 ± 0.06, 2.90 ± 0.11, and 2.28 ± 0.10 GBq m−2 (decay-corrected to March 11, 2011), respectively. Finally, the total atmospheric deposition of 129I on the land of Japan due to the FDNPP accident was estimated to be around 1.09–1.71 kg (7.11–11.2 GBq).

Fly ash generated from coal-fired power plants is a source of potential pollutants, but can be used as a soil ameliorant to increase plant biomass and yield in agriculture. However, the effects of fly ash soil application on plant biomass and the accumulation of both nutrient and toxic elements in plants remain unclear. Based on 85 articles, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to evaluate changes in plant biomass and concentrations of 21 elements in plants in response to fly ash application. These elements included macro-nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, and S), micro-nutrients (B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Zn), and metal(loid)s (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Se). Overall, fly ash application decreased plant biomass by 15.2%. However, plant biomass was enhanced by fly ash application by 11.6–29.2% at lower application rates (i.e. <25% of soil mass), and decreased by 45.8% at higher application rates (i.e. 50–100%). Belowground biomass was significantly reduced while yield was enhanced by fly ash application. Most of the element concentrations in plants were enhanced by fly ash application, and followed a descending order with metal(loid)s > micro-nutrients > macro-nutrients. Concentrations of elements tended to increase with an increase in fly ash application rate. Our syntheses indicated that fly ash should be applied at less than 25% in order to enhance plant biomass and yield but avoid high accumulations of metal(loid)s.

In this analysis, the Aqua/MODIS aerosol optical thickness (AOD), Aura/OMI tropospheric NO2 and SO2 column concentration from 2006 to 2015 were used to statistically analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and variation trends of three polluted parameters from three temporal scales of monthly, seasonal and annual average. The results showed that the minimum values of NO2 and SO2 column concentrations both appeared in July and August, and the maximum values appeared in December and January, which was contrary to the variations in AOD. The highly polluted levels were mainly distributed in Shijiazhuang, Xingtai, and Yancheng cities of Hebei Province, and gradually transported to Zhengzhou, Henan Province, north and southwest of Shandong Province, and Tianjin, along the main line of Taiyuan-Linyi, Shanxi Province. AOD and NO2 had significant differences on the seasonal average scale, whereas SO2 had little changes. These pollutants had declined year by year since 2011, in the 10-year period, AOD and SO2 respectively decreased by 17.14% and 10.57%, and only NO2 rose from 8.69 × 1015 molecules/cm2 in 2006 to 9.10 × 1015 molecules/cm2 in 2015 with the increase rate of 4.79%. Integrated with MODIS-released fire products and the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC), high AOD values in summer were usually accompanied by frequent biomass burning, and heavy heating demand of coal burning led to largest NO2 and SO2 levels in winter. Both inter-annual variations of MEIC NOx and OMI-observed NO2 responded to emission reductions of vehicle exhaustions positively, but vehicle population in Henan and Shandong provinces need to be further controlled. The significant decline of SO2 is mainly attributed to the enforcement of de-sulfurization devices in power plants. Our study found that in the treatment of complex atmospheric pollution, in addition to strict control of common sources of emissions from AOD, NO2 and SO2, it is also necessary to consider their individual characteristics.

With the increased numbers of nuclear power plants constructed along the east coast of China, it is important to know radioactive sources and transport pathways between land and sea, in order to better understand the impact of these nuclear facilities to the marine environment. Two sediment cores collected from the East China Sea dated to 1959–2010 were analyzed for long-lived radioactive 129I and stable 127I. It was observed that 129I levels (129I/127I ratio of (15.0–75.0) × 10−12) were significantly increased compared to the pre-nuclear value (129I/127I = 1.5 × 10−12). Some 129I peaks were observed in layers of 1959, 1966, 1971 and 1976 (1977), corresponding to the atmospheric nuclear weapon tests at Pacific Proving Grounds and Lop Nor. The high values of 129I after the late 1970s are attributed to the releases from the European reprocessing plants. In addition to ocean current transport, the atmospheric dispersion through the interaction of the Westerlies with East Asia monsoon is the important pathway of large-scale transport of pollutants from high latitude West Europe to middle latitude East Asia. Riverine input is the main transport pathway of radioactive pollutants released from Lop Nor to the East China Sea through the atmospheric dispersion, deposition and runoff processes.

In China, the huge amounts of energy consumption caused severe carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) concentration in the soil and ambient air. This paper summarized that the references published in 2008–2018 and suggested that biomass, coal and vehicular emissions were categorized as major sources of PAHs in China. In 2016, the emitted PAHs in China due to the incomplete combustion of fuel was about 32720 tonnes, and the contribution of the emission sources was the sequence: biomass combustion > residential coal combustion > vehicle > coke production > refine oil > power plant > natural gas combustion. The total amount of PAHs emission in China at 2016 was significantly decreased due to the decrease of the proportion of crop resides burning (indoor and open burning).The geographical distribution of PAHs concentration demonstrated that PAHs concentration in the urban soil is 0.092–4.733 μg/g. At 2008–2012, the serious PAHs concentration in the urban soil occurred in the eastern China, which was shifted to western China after 2012.The concentration of particulate and gaseous PAHs in China is 1–151 ng/m3 and 1.08–217 ng/m3, respectively. The concentration of particle-bound PAHs in the southwest and eastern region are lower than that in north and central region of China. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) analysis demonstrates that ILCR in the soil and ambient air in China is below the acceptable cancer risk level of 10−6 recommended by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which mean that there is a low potential PAHs carcinogenic risk for the soil and ambient air in China.
