In this study, the co-pyrolysis of food waste with lignocellulosic biomass (wood bark) in a continuous-flow pyrolysis reactor was considered as an effective strategy for the clean disposal and value-added utilization of the biowaste. To achieve this aim, the effects of major co-pyrolysis parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, the flow rate of the pyrolysis medium (nitrogen (N₂) gas), and the blending ratio of food waste/wood bark on the yields, compositions, and properties of three-phase pyrolytic products (i.e., non-condensable gases, condensable compounds, and char) were investigated. The temperature and the food waste/wood bark ratio were found to affect the pyrolytic product yields, while the N₂ flow rate did not. More non-condensable gases and less char were produced at higher temperatures. For example, as the temperature was increased from 300 °C to 700 °C, the yield of non-condensable gases increased from 6.3 to 17.5 wt%, while the yield of char decreased from 63.6 to 30.6 wt% for the co-pyrolysis of food waste and wood bark at a weight ratio of 1:1. Both the highest yield of hydrogen (H₂) gas and the most significant suppression of the formation of phenolic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds were achieved with a combination of food waste and wood bark at a weight ratio of 1:1 at 700 °C. The results suggest that the synergetic effect of food waste and lignocellulosic biomass during co-pyrolysis can be exploited to increase the H₂ yield while limiting the formation of phenolic compounds and PAH derivatives. This study has also proven the effectiveness of co-pyrolysis as a process for the valorization of biowaste that is produced by agriculture, forestry, and the food industry, while reducing the formation of harmful chemicals.

Release of antibiotics into the environment, which often occurs downstream of wastewater treatment plants, poses a human health threat due to the potential development of bacterial antibiotic resistance. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of ball milled biochar on the removal of two sulfonamide antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfapyridine (SPY) from water and wastewater. Aqueous batch sorption experiment using both pristine and ball milled biochar derived from bagasse (BG), bamboo (BB) and hickory chips (HC), made at three pyrolysis temperatures (300, 450, 600 °C), showed that ball milling greatly enhanced the SMX and SPY adsorption. The 450 °C ball milled HC biochar and BB biochar exhibited the best removal efficiency for SMX (83.3%) and SPY (89.6%), respectively. A range of functional groups were produced by ball milling, leading to the conclusion that the adsorption of sulfonamides on the biochars was controlled by multiple mechanisms including hydrophobic interaction, π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction. Due to the importance of electrostatic interaction, SMX and SPY adsorption was pH dependent. In laboratory water solutions, the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of SMX and SPY reached 100.3 mg/g and 57.9 mg/g, respectively. When tested in real wastewater solution, the 450 °C ball milled biochar still performed well, especially in the removal of SPY. The maximum adsorption capacities of SMX and SPY in wastewater were 25.7 mg/g and 58.6 mg/g, respectively. Thus, ball milled biochar has great potential for SMX and SPY removal from aqueous solutions including wastewater.

Sludge from a groundwater treatment plant was used to prepare biochar by pyrolysis. The Fe–Mn rich biochar was used to activate percarbonate for the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated aquatic sediments. Results showed that the sludge–derived biochar (SBC) produced at a pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C was the most effective in activating percarbonate, which exhibited significant oxidative removal of PAHs. PAHs degradation took place via a Fenton-like oxidation manners, contributed from the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ and Mn³⁺/Mn²⁺ redox pairs, and achieved the highest degradation efficiency of 87% at pH₀ 6.0. Reactions between oxygenated functional groups of biochar and H₂O₂ generated of O₂•– and HO• radicals in abundance under neutral and alkaline pH was responsible for the catalytic degradation of PAHs. Our results provided new insights into the environmental applications of SBC for the green sustainable remediation of organics-contaminated sediments and aided in reduction of associated environmental and health risk.

Properly increasing mobility of heavy metals could promote phytoremediation of contaminated soil. Fe₁₋ₓS/biochar was successfully prepared from sawdust with loading pyrrhotite (Fe₁₋ₓS) at a pyrolysis temperature of 550 °C. Thiobacillus were successfully adsorbed and enriched on the surface of Fe₁₋ₓS/biochar. Microbial growth for 36 d supported by bio-oxidization of Fe₁₋ₓS decreased the system pH from 4.32 to 3.50, increased the ORP from 298 to 487 mV, and the Fe³⁺ release reached 25.48 mg/g, enhancing the oxidation and leaching of soil Pb. Finally, Fe₁₋ₓS/biochar and Thiobacillus were simultaneously applied into Pb-contaminated soil for 60 d, the soil pH decreased from 7.83 to 6.72, and the exchangeable fraction of soil Pb increased from 22.86% to 37.19%. Ryegrass planting for 60 d in Pb-contaminated soil with Fe₁₋ₓS/biochar and Thiobacillus showed that the Pb content in shoot and root of ryegrass increased by 55.65% and 73.43%, respectively, confirming an obvious increase of phytoavailability of soil Pb. The relative abundance of Thiobacillus in remediated soil significantly increased from 0.06% to 34.55% due to the addition of Fe₁₋ₓS/biochar and Thiobacillus. This study provides a novel approach for regulating the Pb phytoavailability for phytoremediation of Pb-contaminated soil.

Proper management of waste crop residues has been an environmental concern for years. Yellow mealworms (larvae of Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, 1758) are major insect protein source. In comparison with normal feed wheat bran (WB), we tested five common lignocellulose-rich crop residues as feedstock to rear mealworms, including wheat straw (WS), rice straw (RS), rice bran (RB), rice husk (RH), and corn straw (CS). We then used egested frass for the production of biochar in order to achieve clean production. Except for WS and RH, the crop residues supported mealworms’ life activity and growth with consumption of the residues by 90% or higher and degraded lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose over 32 day period. The sequence of degradability of the feedstocks is RS > RB > CS > WS > RH. Egested frass was converted to biochar which was tested for metal removal including Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cr(VI). Biochar via pyrolysis at 600 °C from RS fed frass (FRSBC) showed the best adsorption performance. The adsorption isotherm fits the Langmuir model, and kinetic analysis fits the Pseudo-Second Order Reaction. The heavy metal adsorption process was well-described using the Intra-Particle Diffusion model. Complexation, cation exchange, precipitation, reduction, deposition, and chelation dominated the adsorption of the metals onto FRSBC. The results indicated that crop residues (WS, RS, RB, and CS) can be utilized as supplementary feedstock along with biochar generated from egested frass to rear mealworms and achieve clean production while generating high-quality bioadsorbent for environment remediation and soil conditioning.

Metals are released from biochar (BC) in either the free or dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-combined form. The complexation of metals with DOC influences their toxicity and bioavailability in the environment. The endogenous release of metal species with heterogeneous DOC from BC is very complex; this process has been neglected and remains unaddressed in the literature to date. In this study, the yield and chemical properties of labile DOC from BC were characterized, and the release of endogenous metal/metalloid elements (K, Mg, Mn, Fe, Al, Cu, and Si) and their species from BC with various pyrolysis temperatures and particle sizes were systematically investigated under various solution chemistries. The results showed that pyrolysis temperature of BC significantly influenced the yield and composition of DOC and DOC-metal/metalloid complexes, while particle size had lower impact. The yield of BC-derived DOC significantly decreased and the components gradually changed from low-molecular weight and low-aromaticity hydrophilic humic acid-like substances to complex high-molecular weight and high-aromaticity hydrophobic substances as pyrolysis temperature increased from 200 to 700 °C. The release of total dissolved metals decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, while the highest total dissolved Si was released from BC with the moderate pyrolysis temperature (500 °C). The metal elements were mainly released in the DOC-combined form, while the released Si was mainly in the free form in the neutral water environment. The release of DOC increased while that of dissolved metals decreased with increasing solution pH. The release of total dissolved metals/metalloids increased but the ratio of the DOC-combined metals/metalloids decreased with increasing solution ionic strength. These results provide new insight into the understanding of endogenous metal/metalloid release from BC in the natural environment.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has a major influence upon sorption/desorption and transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in soil environments. However, the molecular mechanisms of DOC sorption and its effects on aged HOC desorption in contaminated soils still remain largely unclear. Here, effects of three different DOC (one from commercial peat and two from biochars produced at 300 °C and 500 °C pyrolysis temperatures, respectively) and oxalate (as a reference) on abiotic desorption behavior of aged phenanthrene from three agricultural soils were investigated. Results showed that desorption of aged phenanthrene from soils was predominantly dependent on soil organic carbon content. The presence of DOC and oxalate resulted in higher desorption of phenanthrene compared to water alone, and the effects were positively related to soil organic carbon content and DOC/oxalate concentration. The facilitating effects of DOC were further increased during the second consecutive desorption, whereas oxalate had no such effect. Ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry confirmed the molecular fractionation of DOC at the soil-water interface during DOC sorption. Specifically, the DOC molecules with O-rich moieties were preferentially adsorbed, whereas the molecules with phenolic and aromatic structures were selectively retained in the soil solutions through competitive displacement and co-sorption reactions during sorption. The enriched phenyl structures in the retained DOC facilitated its association with phenanthrene in the solutions and thus the release of phenanthrene from the soils. In contrast, oxalate replaced some organic carbon from the soils and thus released the associated phenanthrene into the solutions. Our findings highlight the importance of the molecular composition and structure of DOC for the desorption of phenanthrene in soil-water environments, which may help improve our understanding of the release and transport of organic compounds in the environments.

In this research, adsorption of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by biochars was investigated. To enhance the adsorption of these two metal ions, a simple modification of biochars by phosphoric acid (H(3)PO(4)) was carried out. The surface area was larger and the contents of oxygen-containing functional groups of modified biochars were more than pristine biochars. In comparison with pristine biochar, modified biochars sorbed Cu(II) and Cd(II) much more strongly. Surface area had significant effects on the sorption of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by modified biochars. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicated that the quantities of carboxyl (-COOH) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups of modified biochars were larger than those of pristine biochar at the same pyrolysis temperature. Compared with that of pristine biochars, the strong ability of -COOH and -OH of modified biochars to form complexes with Cu(II)/Cd(II) ions resulted in higher adsorption of these two metal ions. The phosphorus-containing groups of modified biochars, such as P=O and P=OOH from the result of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, interacted and also formed complexes with metal ions, possibly resulting in the enhanced adsorption of Cu(II) and Cd(II). Thus, sorption of metal ions by modified biochars was controlled by the mechanism of surface complexation between oxygen containing functional groups and metals. In general, the H(3)PO(4) modification was an effective method that prepared biochars with a high affinity for the sorption of heavy metals.

This study proposes a strategic principle to enhance the thermal efficiency of pyrolysis of municipal solid waste (MSW). An environmentally sound energy recovery platform was established by suppressing the formation of harmful organic compounds evolved from pyrolysis of MSW. Using CO2 as reaction medium/feedstock, CO generation was enhanced through the following: 1) expediting the thermal cracking of volatile organic carbons (VOCs) evolved from the thermal degradation of the MSWs and 2) directly reacting VOCs with CO2. This particular influence of CO2 on pyrolysis of the MSWs also led to the in-situ mitigation of harmful organic compounds (e.g., benzene derivatives and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) considering that CO2 acted as a carbon scavenger to block reaction pathways toward benzenes and PAHs in pyrolysis. To understand the fundamental influence of CO2, simulated MSWs (i.e., various ratios of biomass to polymer) were used to avoid any complexities arising from the heterogeneous matrix of MSW. All experimental findings in this study suggested the foreseeable environmental application of CO2 to energy recovery from MSW together with disposal of MSW.

Guiyu, China, is well-known for the crude disposal of electronic waste (EW) and severe persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Therefore, in this study, the occurrence, composition, and source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2,2′,4,4′,5,5’-hexabromobiphenyl (BB153), some novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), Dechlorane Plus (DP) and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) in farmland soils covering Guiyu were studied. In EW disposal area soils, PBDEs were the most abundant FRs, with concentrations of 13–1014 ng g−1. The primary PBDE sources were technical Penta- and Deca-BDE mixtures in northern and southern Guiyu, respectively. The levels of BB153 were relatively low, possibly because it has been banned in the 1970s. The concentrations of hexabromobenzene (HBB) were 0.048–3.3 ng g−1, while pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) was almost not detected in the soils. Two alternatives to commercial PBDEs, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), were the primary NBFRs, with concentrations of 1.8–153 ng g−1 and 0.43–15 ng g−1, respectively. DP was another primary FR, with concentrations of 0.57–146 ng g−1. Moreover, syn-DP and anti-DP isomers were not stereoselectively decomposed during the EW disposal process and were therefore present in their original fractions in the soils. The levels of PBDD/Fs in EW disposal area soils were 2.5–17 pg TEQ g−1. 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF and OBDF were the dominant congeners, mainly derived from processing, pyrolysis and combustion of BFRs. The regional distribution of pollutants was shown to be related to the disposal manner of EW, with their open thermal disposal tending to release more highly brominated compounds such as BDE209, DBDPE, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF. Additionally, some riverbank sites were heavily polluted because of nearby point sources, downwind Simapu (SMP) town without EW disposal activity was also contaminated by these pollutants.
