Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the photochemical behavior of nano- and micro-plastic particles (NPs/MPs). We investigated the influence of DOM on the mechanism on the photoaging of NPs/MPs with different molecular structures under UV₃₆₅ irradiation in water. DOM components used in this study are mainly humic acid and fulvic acid. The results showed that DOM promoted the weathering of aliphatic NPs/MPs (polypropylene (PP)), but inhibited or had only a minor effect on the photoaging of aromatic NPs/MPs (polystyrene (PS) NPs/MPs, carboxyl-modified PS NPs, amino-modified PS NPs, and polycarbonate MPs). NPs with a large surface area may adsorb sufficient DOM on the particle surfaces through π-π interactions, which competes with NPs for photon absorption sites, thus, can delay the photoaging of PS NPs. Aromatic MPs may release phenolic compounds that quench •OH, thereby weakening the photoaging process. For aliphatic MPs, the detection of peracid, aldehyde, and ketone groups on the polymer surface indicated that DOM promoted weathering of PP MPs, which was primarily because the generation of •OH due to DOM photolysis may attack the polymer by C–C bond cleavage and hydrogen extraction reactions. This study provides insight into the UV irradiation weathering process of NPs/MPs of various compositions and structures, which are globally distributed in water.

Photoaging is an important reaction for waste plastics in the aquatic environment and plays a key role in the lifetime of plastics. Nevertheless, when natural photosensitive substances such as nitrate participate in this process, the physiochemical changes in plastics and the corresponding reaction mechanisms are not well-understood. In this work, the photochemical behavior of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in deionized water and nitrate solution was systematically investigated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The analyses of the surface physicochemical properties of the photoaged PET bottles indicated that, after 20 days of photo-irradiation, the presence of nitrate reduced the contact angle from 69.8 ± 0.9° to 60.0 ± 0.3°, and increased the O/C ratio from 0.23 to 0.32, respectively. The leaching rate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which was 0.0193 mg g⁻¹·day⁻¹ in nitrate solution, was twice that of 0.00941 mg g⁻¹·day⁻¹ in deionized water. Furthermore, fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that the increasing DOC had aromatic rings with hydroxyl on the side-chain formed after UV irradiation. The positive effect of nitrate on the degradation of PET bottles was mainly through the generation of hydroxyl radicals that were produced through the photolysis of nitrate. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis showed that the chain scission of PET plastics could be initiated by nitrate-induced ·OH attacking the carbon-oxygen bonds instead of forming peroxides with oxygen. This work elucidates the mechanism of photodegradation of plastics that was induced by nitrate and highlights the important role of natural photosensitive substances in the photoaging process of plastics.

Arsenic (As) contamination and bioaccumulation are a serious threat to agricultural plants. To address this issue, we checked the efficacy of As tolerant plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and oxalic acid (OA) in Luffa acutangula grown on As rich soil. The selected most As tolerant PGPB i.e Providencia vermicola exhibited plant growth promoting features i.e solubilzation of phosphate, potassium and siderophores production. Innovatively, we observed the synergistic effects of P. vermicola, ZnO NPs (10 ppm) and OA (100 ppm) in L. acutangula grown on As enriched soil (150 ppm). Our treatments both as alone and in combination alleviated As toxicity exhibited by better plant growth and metabolism. Results revealed significantly enhanced photosynthetic pigments, proline, relative water content, total sugars, proteins and indole acetic acid along with As amelioration in L. acutangula. Furthermore, upregulated plant resistance was manifested with marked reduction in the lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage and pronounced antagonism of As and zinc content in leaves under toxic conditions. These treatments also improved level of nutrients, abscisic acid and antioxidants to mitigate As toxicity. This marked improvement in plants’ defense mechanism of treated plants under As stress is confirmed by less damaged leaves cell structures observed through the scanning electron micrographs. We also found substantial decrease in the As bioaccumulation in the L. acutangula shoots and roots by 40 and 58% respectively under the co-application of P. vermicola, ZnO NPs and OA in comparison with control. Moreover, the better activity of soil phosphatase and invertase was assessed under the effect of our application. These results cast a new light on the application of P. vermicola, ZnO NPs and OA in both separate and combined form as a feasible and ecofriendly tool to alleviate As stress in L. acutangula.

Numerous applications exist for graphene-based materials, such as graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Increased concentrations of GO nanosheets in the environment have the potential to have a large negative effect on the aquatic environment, with consequences for benthic organisms, such as polychaetes. The polychaete Hediste diversicolor mobilises the sediments, hence altering the availability of contaminants and the nutrients biogeochemical cycle. As such, this study proposes to assess the effects of different GO nanosheet concentrations on the behaviour, feeding activity, mucus production, regenerative capacity, antioxidant status, biochemical damage and metabolism of H. diversicolor. This study evidenced that H. diversicolor exposed to GO nanosheets had a significantly lower ability to regenerate their bodies, took longer to feed and burrow into the sediment and produced more mucus. Membrane oxidative damage (lipid peroxidation) increased in exposed specimens. The increased metabolic rate (ETS) evidenced a higher energy expenditure in exposed organisms (high use of ready energy sources – soluble sugars) to fight the toxicity induced by GO nanosheets, such as SOD activity. The increase in SOD activity was enough to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by GO on cytosol at the lowest concentrations, avoiding the damage on proteins (lower PC levels), but not on membranes (LPO increase). This study revealed that the presence of GO nanosheets, even at the lower levels tested, impaired behavioural, physiological, and biochemical traits in polychaetes, suggesting that the increase of this engineered nanomaterial in the environment can disturb these benthic organisms, affecting the H. diversicolor population. Moreover, given the important role of this group of organisms in coastal and estuarine food webs, the biogeochemical cycle of nutrients, and sediment oxygenation, there is a real possibility for repercussions into the estuarine community.

Salinity stress seriously threatens agricultural productivity and food security worldwide. This work reports on the mechanisms of alleviating salinity stress by cerium oxide nanomaterials (CeO2 NMs) in maize (Zea may L.). Soil-grown maize plants were irrigated with deionized water or 100 mM NaCl solution as the control or the salinity stress treatment. CeO2 NMs (1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/L) with antioxidative enzyme mimicking activities were foliarly applied on maize leaves for 7 days. The morphological, physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic responses of maize were evaluated. Specifically, salinity stress significantly reduced 59.0% and 63.8% in maize fresh and dry biomass, respectively. CeO₂ NMs at 10, 20, and 50 mg/L improved the salt tolerance of maize by 69.5%, 69.1%, and 86.8%, respectively. Also, 10 mg/L CeO₂ NMs maintained Na⁺/K⁺ homeostasis, enhanced photosynthetic efficiency by 30.8%, and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) level by 58.5% in salt-stressed maize leaves. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the antioxidative defense system-related genes recovered to the normal control level after CeO₂ NMs application, indicating that CeO₂ NMs eliminated ROS through their intrinsic antioxidative enzyme properties. The down-regulation of genes related to lignin synthesis in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway accelerated leaf cell elongation. In addition, CeO₂ NMs increased the rhizobacteria richness and diversity through the increment of carbon source in root exudates and improved the abundance of halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (HT-PGPR). Importantly, the yield of salt-stressed maize was enhanced by 293.3% after 10 mg/L CeO₂ NMs foliar application. These results will provide new insights for the application of CeO₂ NMs in management to reduce the salinity-caused crop loss.

Hydrothermal carbonization is considered a powerful technology to convert sewage sludge (SS) into a valuable carbonaceous solid known as hydrochar (HC). Up to now criteria for landfill application of SS and HC are based only on physicochemical properties and levels of pollutant residues. Nevertheless, to ensure their safe environmental applications it is mandatory to develop biosensors which can provide relevant information on their toxic potential for natural ecosystems. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the suitability of a contact assay using zebrafish embryo/larvae combined with sub-lethal end-points to evaluate the hazard associated with SS and related HC exposure. A suite of biomarkers was also applied on larvae, related to detoxification and oxidative stress as the activity of Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase, glutathione-S-transferase, and catalase, the content of reactive oxygen species and the behavioral assay using the DanioVision™ chamber. Legacy priority pollutants were also measured either in SS and HC tested samples and in contact waters. The exposure to SS caused higher lethality compared to HC. No significant changes in the activity of oxidative stress markers was observed upon exposure to both matrices. The behavioral test showed a hypoactivity condition in larvae exposed to both SS and HC with the effects of SS stronger than HC. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of trace elements and halogenated compounds in either SS, HC. Heavy metals were also released in contact waters, while volatile hydrocarbons (C6–C10) and halogenated compounds resulted below LOD (<0.05 μ L⁻¹). Our study highlights the suitability of zebrafish embryotoxicity test, coupled with behavioral traits, as screening tool for assessing potential risks, associated with the landfill application of both SS and HC, for aquatic wildlife.

Monobutyl phthalate (MBP) is the main metabolite of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in vivo. MBP has a stable structure, can continuously accumulate in living organisms, and has the potentially to harm animal and human reproductive function. In the ovarian follicle microenvironment, MBP may lead to defects in follicular development and steroid production, abnormal meiotic maturation, impaired ovarian function and other reproductive deficits. In this study, SMART-seq was used to investigate the effects of MBP exposure on the in vitro maturation (IVM) and development of porcine oocytes. The results showed that differentially expressed genes after MBP exposure were enriched in the biological processes cytoskeleton, cell apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria. Glycine (Gly) improved the developmental potential of porcine oocytes by regulating mitochondrial and ER function. The effect of Gly in protecting oocytes against MBP-induced damage was studied. The results showed that the addition of Gly significantly decreased the rate of MBP-induced spindle abnormalities, decreased the frequency of MBP-induced mitochondria-associated ER membrane (MAM) interactions, and downregulated the protein and gene expression of the linkage molecules Mitofusin 1 (MFN1) and Mitofusin 2 (MFN2) in the MAM. Additionally, treatment with Gly restored the distribution of the 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor 1 (IP₃R1) and voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1), further decreasing the intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca²⁺]ᵢ) levels and mitochondrial Ca²⁺ ([Ca²⁺]ₘ) , increasing the ER Ca²⁺ ([Ca²⁺]ER) levels, and thus significantly increasing the ER levels and mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨ m). Gly also decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increased the levels of Glutathione (GSH), oocyte apoptosis-related indicators (Caspase-3 activity and Annexin V) and oocyte apoptosis-related genes (BAX, Caspase 3 and AIFM1). Our results suggest that Gly can ameliorate microtubule cytoskeleton abnormalities and improve oocyte maturation by reducing the defective mitochondrial–ER interactions caused by MBP exposure in vitro.

RNA N⁶-methyladenosine (m⁶A) modification regulates the cell stress response and homeostasis, but whether titanium dioxide nanoparticle (nTiO₂)-induced acute pulmonary injury is associated with the m⁶A epitranscriptome and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, the potential association between m⁶A modification and the bioeffects of several engineered nanoparticles (nTiO₂, nAg, nZnO, nFe₂O₃, and nCuO) were verified thorough in vitro experiments. nFe₂O₃, nZnO, and nTiO₂ exposure significantly increased the global m⁶A level in A549 cells. Our study further revealed that nTiO₂ can induce m⁶A-mediated acute pulmonary injury. Mechanistically, nTiO₂ exposure promoted methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3)-mediated m⁶A signal activation and thus mediated the inflammatory response and IL-8 release through the degeneration of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and Mucin5B (MUC5B) mRNAs in a YTH m⁶A RNA-binding protein 2 (YTHDF2)-dependent manner. Moreover, nTiO₂ exposure stabilized METTL3 protein by the lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS)-activated ERK1/2 pathway. The scavenging of ROS with ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) alleviates the ERK1/2 activation, m⁶A upregulation, and the inflammatory response caused by nTiO₂ both in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that m⁶A is a potential intervention target for alleviating the adverse effects of nTiO₂-induced acute pulmonary injury in vitro and in vivo, which has far-reaching implications for protecting human health and improving the sustainability of nanotechnology.

In the current investigation, we presented the success of the modified hydrothermal method for synthesizing the iron-oxide nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃-NPs) efficiently. These NPs were further characterized by using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX)/Mapping pattern, Raman Spectroscopy Pattern, ultra violet (UV) and Photoluminescence (PL). All these analyses revealed highly pure nature of Fe₂O₃-NPs with no internal defects, and suggested its application for plant growth improvement. Therefore, we further investigated the separate as well as combined effects of the Fe₂O₃-NPs and citric acid (CA) in the alleviation of arsenic (As) toxicity in the soybean (Glycine max L.), by evaluating the different plant growth and metabolic attributes. Results of our study revealed that As-induced growth inhibition, reduction of photosynthesis, water use efficiency (WUE), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation whereas application of the Fe₂O₃-NPs and CA significantly reversed all these adverse effects in soybean plants. Moreover, the As-stress induced malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) production were partially reversed by the Fe₂O₃-NPs and CA in the As-stressed plants by 16% and 10% (MDA) and 29% and 12% (H₂O₂). This might have resulted due to the Fe₂O₃-NPs and CA induced activities of the antioxidant defense in plants. Overall, the Fe₂O₃-NPs and CA supplementation separately and in combination positively regulated the As tolerance in soybean; however, the effect of the combined application on the As tolerance was more profound relative to the individual application. These results suggested the synergetic effect of the Fe₂O₃-NPs and CA on the As-tolerance in soybean. However, in-depth mechanism underlying the defense crosstalk between the Fe₂O₃-NPs and CA needs to be further explored.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), which is the most widely employed brominated flame retardant, and its alternative tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) are widely distributed in aquatic environments. In the present study, the hepatotoxicity induced by TBBPA and TCBPA was investigated in Rana nigromaculata, and the potential mechanisms were investigated with a particular focus on ROS (reactive oxygen species) -dependent mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. Healthy adult frogs were exposed to 0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L waterborne TBBPA and TCBPA for 14 days. The results showed that liver weight was significantly increased by 51.52%–98.99% in the 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L TBBPA and TCBPA groups relative to the control. Histological examination revealed that the structure of the liver, to some extent, was influenced by TBBPA and TCBPA with nuclear shrinkage and mitochondrial swelling. Meanwhile, TBBPA and TCBPA have significantly increased the alanine transaminase level in serum and the content of ROS, while inhibiting the activity of superoxide dismutase in the liver. In addition, DNA fragments were observed in the TBBPA and TCBPA groups relative to the control. Expression of Cytochrome C was significantly increased by 1.13-, 1.38-, 1.60-, and 2.46-fold in 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L TBBPA, and by 1.26-, 1.51-, 2.14-, and 2.98- fold in 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L TCBPA, respectively, which indicated that TCBPA may be more toxic than TBBPA. Similarly, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 was increased in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that apoptosis in the ROS-dependent mitochondrial pathway mediates hepatotoxicity caused by TBBPA and TCBPA. The present study will facilitate an understanding of the toxicity mechanism of flame retardants.
