In the present investigation, 41 soil samples were subjected to single step chemical partitioning to assess the lithogenic and non-lithogenic portions of metals in Tehran's soils. The share of various studied metals in the anthropogenic portion ranges from as low as 0.2% to as high as 85% of bulk concentration. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) showed that Cd falls within "heavily contaminated" soils. It might be inferred that Ni, Cu, Cr, Zn, Co and Ca fall within "Deficient to minimal" class in accordance with enrichment factor (EF) classification.. Enrichment factor values (to some extents) match with the chemical partition studies results (except for Ni and Cr). The very low Ca content of soil samples could be indicative of low biological productivity in the Tehran's soil. Also the very low concentrations of Mn could be indicative of reducing environment in soils of Tehran.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA was evaluated in batch experiments, and the form and amounts of intracellular and extra-cellular Cr(VI) reduction products were determined over time. The first-order Cr(VI) reduction rate per unit mass of cells was consistent for different initial cell concentrations, and approximately equal to (2.065 ± 0.389) x 10−9 mL CFU−1 h−1. A portion of the reduced Cr(VI) products precipitated on Geobacter cell walls as Cr(III) and was bound via carboxylate functional groups, a portion accumulated inside Geobacter cells, and another portion existed as soluble Cr(III) or organo-Cr(III) released to solution. A mass balance analysis of total chromium in aqueous media, on cell walls, and inside cells was determined as a function of time, and with different initial cell concentrations. Mass balances were between 92% and 98%, and indicated Cr(VI) reduction products accumulate more on cell walls and inside cells with time and with increasing initial cell concentration, as opposed to particulates in aqueous solution. Reduced Cr(VI) products both in solution and on cell surfaces appear to form organo-Cr(III) complexes, and our results suggest that such complexes are more stable to reoxidation than aqueous Cr(III) or Cr(OH)3. Chromium inside cells is also likely more stable to reoxidation, both because it can form organic complexes, and it is separated by the cell membrane from solution conditions. Hence, Cr(VI) reduction products in groundwater during bioremediation may become more stable against re-oxidation, and may pose a lower risk to human health, over time and with greater initial biomass densities.

PM₂.₅ pollution poses severe health risks to urban residents in low and middle-income countries. Existing studies have shown that the problem is affected by multiple socioeconomic factors. However, the relative contribution of these factors is not well understood, which sometimes leads to controversial controlling measures. In this study, we quantified the relative contribution of different socioeconomic factors, including the city size, industrial activities, and residents' activities, to PM₂.₅ pollution in urban China between 2014 and 2015 by using structural equation model (SEM). Our results showed that industrial activities contributed more to PM₂.₅ pollution than other factors. The city size and residents’ activities also had significant impacts on PM₂.₅ pollution. The combined influence of all socioeconomic factors could explain between 44% and 48% of variation in PM₂.₅ pollution, which indicated the existence of influences from other factors such as weather conditions and outside sources of pollutants. Findings from our study can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the socioeconomic causes of PM₂.₅ pollution.

High arsenic (As) concentrations in the soil, water and plant systems can pose a direct health risk to humans and ecosystems. Phosphate (Pi) ions strongly influence As availability in soil, its uptake and toxicity to plants. Better understanding of As(V)-Pi interactions in soils and plants will facilitate a potential remediation strategy for As contaminated soils, reducing As uptake by crop plants and toxicity to human populations via manipulation of soil Pi content. However, the As(V)-Pi interactions in soil-plant systems are complex, leading to contradictory findings among different studies. Therefore, this review investigates the role of soil type, soil properties, minerals, Pi levels in soil and plant, Pi transporters, mycorrhizal association and microbial activities on As-Pi interactions in soils and hydroponics, and uptake by plants, elucidate the key mechanisms, identify key knowledge gaps and recommend new research directions. Although Pi suppresses As uptake by plants in hydroponic systems, in soils it could either increase or decrease As availability and toxicity to plants depending on the soil types, properties and charge characteristics. In soil, As(V) availability is typically increased by the addition of Pi. At the root surface, the Pi transport system has high affinity for Pi over As(V). However, Pi concentration in plant influences the As transport from roots to shoots. Mycorrhizal association may reduce As uptake via a physiological shift to the mycorrhizal uptake pathway, which has a greater affinity for Pi over As(V) than the root epidermal uptake pathway.

Microplastic polystyrene foam has been found widely in the environment and is readily transported by wind or water. Beached and virgin foams of size 0.45–1 mm were prepared as sorbents to study oxytetracycline sorption. Enhanced adsorption were found in the beached foams compared to the virgin foams, corresponding to the higher specific surface area, micropore area and the degree of oxidation of the former. The Freundlich Kf value was 894 ± 84 ((mg kg⁻¹) (mg L⁻¹)¹/ⁿ) for oxytetracycline adsorption on the beached foams, approximately twice as high as on the virgin foams. Effects of solution pH on adsorption to the beached foams were more pronounced to the virgin foams. Maximum adsorption occurred at pH 5 at which electrostatic repulsion between the microplastic surface and the oxytetracycline zwitterion was minimal, indicating that electrostatic interaction may have regulated adsorption. Moreover, H-bonding and multivalent cationic bridging mechanisms may also have affected the adsorption of oxytetracycline to the beached foams as reflected by the ionic effects. Adsorption was promoted more in the presence of humic acid than of fulvic acid, perhaps owing to π-π conjugation between the humic acid and the microplastic surface which led to enhanced electrostatic attraction for oxytetracycline. This study suggests that weathered polystyrene foams may act as carriers of antibiotics in the environment and their potential risks to ecosystem and human health merit further investigation.

Microplastics are a widespread environmental pollutant in aquatic ecosystems and have the potential to eventually sink to the sediment, where they may pose a risk to sediment-dwelling organisms. While the impacts of exposure to microplastics have been widely reported for marine biota, the effects of microplastics on freshwater organisms at environmentally realistic concentrations are largely unknown, especially for benthic organisms. Here we examined the effects of a realistic concentration of polyethylene microplastics in sediment on the growth and emergence of a freshwater organism Chironomus tepperi. We also assessed the influence of microplastic size by exposing C. tepperi larvae to four different size ranges of polyethylene microplastics (1–4, 10–27, 43–54 and 100–126 μm). Exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of microplastics, 500 particles/kgsediment, negatively affected the survival, growth (i.e. body length and head capsule) and emergence of C. tepperi. The observed effects were strongly dependent on microplastic size with exposure to particles in the size range of 10–27 μm inducing more pronounced effects. While growth and survival of C. tepperi were not affected by the larger microplastics (100–126 μm), a significant reduction in the number of emerged adults was observed after exposure to the largest microplastics, with the delayed emergence attributed to exposure to a stressor. While scanning electron microscopy showed a significant reduction in the size of the head capsule and antenna of C. tepperi exposed to microplastics in the 10–27 μm size range, no deformities to the external structure of the antenna and mouth parts in organisms exposed to the same size range of microplastics were observed. These results indicate that environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastics in sediment induce harmful effects on the development and emergence of C. tepperi, with effects greatly dependent on particle size.

Globally, millions of people who rely on groundwater for potable purposes and agriculture have been inadvertently exposed to toxic arsenic (As) because of its natural occurrence in groundwater in several countries of Asia, Europe and America. While the presence of As in groundwater and its impacts on human health have been documented in many countries, there is little information on As contamination in Pakistan. This review highlights, for the first time, the extent and severity of As-induced problems in Pakistan based on relevant published papers; discusses possible sources of As contamination of aquifers; and estimates As-induced potential health hazards in the country in relation to global data. Data from 43 studies (>9882 groundwater samples) were used to describe As variability in groundwater of Pakistan and for comparison with global data. The mean groundwater As content reported in these studies was 120 μg/L (range: 0.1–2090 μg/L; SD: ±307). About 73% of the values for mean As contents in the 43 studies were higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit (10 μg/L) for drinking water, while 41% were higher than the permissible limit of As in Pakistan (50 μg/L). It was observed that groundwater samples in some areas of Punjab and Sindh provinces contained high As concentrations which were almost equal to concentrations reported in the most contaminated areas of the world. We predicted that the mean values of ADD, HQ and CR were 4.4 μg kg⁻¹day⁻¹ (range: 0–77 μg kg⁻¹day⁻¹), 14.7 (range: 0–256) and 0.0029 (range: 0–0.0512), respectively, based on mean As concentrations reported in Pakistan. In addition, this article proposes some integrated sustainable solutions and future perspectives keeping in view the regional and global context, as well as the on-ground reality of the population drinking As-contaminated water, planning issues, awareness among civil society and role of the government bodies. Based on available data, it is predicted that almost 47 million people in Pakistan are residing in areas where more than 50% of groundwater wells contain As concentrations above the WHO recommended limit of As in drinking water.

A method was proposed to evaluate comprehensive effects of pHs and total metal concentration (TMC) variation for metal speciation human health risk in groundwater. The method used for the health assessment considered comprehensive and mutative effects caused by oral ingestion of groundwater based on human health risk assessment model and MINTEQ simulation. The results demonstrated that the dissolution rate of Ni2+ was affected by pH and Ni total concentration (total-Ni). With the increase of pH, the Ni2+ dissolved rate was smaller in the higher total-Ni at same pH. Ni2+ was dominant components contributed to health risk in groundwater. With the increase of pH in various total-Ni, HINi keep constant at first, and then decreased gradually. The HINi values of Ni speciation above acceptable level only in high total-Ni with alkaline conditions. The obtained results to verify that metals speciation were determined in health risk, and variation factors (pH and metal total concentration) played important role in risk estimation. These results provide basic information of heavy metal pollution control as well as remediation management.

Although several air pollution studies have examined the relationship between people living close to roadways and human health, we are unaware of studies that have examined the distance-decay of this effect based on a snapshot of congestion and focused on a micro-level traffic emission inventory. In this paper we estimate the distance-decay of premature mortality risk related to PM₂.₅ emitted by traffic congestion in Hamilton, Canada, in 2011 We employ the Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE) traffic assignment algorithm to estimate congested travel times for each road link in our study area. Next, we used EPA's MOVES model to estimate mass of PM₂.₅, and then R-line dispersion model to predict concentration of PM₂.₅. Finally, we apply Integrated Exposure Response Function (IERF) to estimate PM₂.₅-related premature mortality at 100 m × 100 m grid resolution. We estimated total premature mortality over Hamilton to be 73.10 (95%CI: 39.05; 82.11) deaths per year. We observed that the proximity to a roadway increases the risk of premature mortality and the strength of this risk decreases as buffer sizes are increased. For example, we estimated that the premature mortality risk within buffer 0–100 m is 29.5% higher than for the buffer 101–200 m, 179.3% higher than for the buffer 201–300 m, and 566% higher than for the buffer 301–400 m. Our study provides a new perspective on exposure increments from traffic congestion. In particular, our findings show health effects gradients across neighborhoods, capturing microscale near-road exposure up to 2000 m of the roadway. Results from this research can be useful for policymakers to develop new strategies for the challenges of regulating transportation, land use, and air pollution.

Integrated compensatory responses of physiological systems towards homeostasis are generally overlooked when it comes to analysing alterations in biochemical parameters indicative of such processes. Here an hypothesis-driven multivariate analysis accounting for interactive multibiomarker responses was used to investigate effects of long-term exposure of Carcinus maenas to Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS). Adult male crabs were exposed to low and high post-spill levels of acrylonitrile (ACN) or aniline (ANL) for 21d. Bioaccumulation, feeding behaviour, and biomarkers related to mode-of-action (MoA) (detoxification, neurotransmission and energy production) were evaluated over time. Distinct temporal patterns of response to low and high exposure concentrations were depicted, with a main set of interactive multibiomarker predictors identified for each HNS (five for ACN and three for ANL), useful to follow coupled evolvement of biomarker responses. ACN caused peripheral neurotoxic effects coupled with enhanced biotransformation and significant oxidative damage particularly relevant in gills. ANL elicited alterations in central neurotransmission affecting ventilation coupled with very low levels of oxidative damage in gills. Results indicate chronic toxicity data are determinant to improve HNS hazard assessment if the aim is to obtain reliable risk calculations, and develop effective predictive models avoiding overestimation but sufficiently protective. Accounting for multibiomarker interactions brought otherwise overlooked information about C. maenas responses and MoA of ACN and ANL.
