The negative impact of microplastics (MPs) act as metals vectors to environment and ecosystem have been paid more and more attention, and the accumulation risk of them to human body through the food chains and food webs needs to attract attention. In addition, the MPs bonded with heavy metals transport from river into the sea with high salinity may also have metals release risk. Herein, natural aged microplastics prepared from artificially broken macroplastics adsorbed with heavy metals accumulated from the natural environment were tested for their states and release risk in several simulated solution (NaCl and gastrointestinal solutions) to understand their effects on environment and human health. The adsorption capacity of different heavy metals on MPs was different during natural aging process proved by four-acid digestion method. Metals with high accumulation (including Pb, As, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Co, Cu and Cd) on NAMPs were selected for further study. Results obtained via three-step extraction method showed that these heavy metals were mainly present as acid-extractable and reducible ions, which were characterized by high bioavailability. Release experiments suggested the notable Mn, Zn, As, Cr, Cu and Ni release in NaCl solution, and significant release of Mn, Zn, As, Cr, Cu, Pb and Ni in gastrointestinal solutions. The high metal release ratio in the simulated gastric solution was attributed to the weak binding of metal ions to NAMPs in acidic environment. This study will play a vital rule in assessing the ecological risks associated with MPs in natural environment.

The presence of heavy metals in municipal solid waste (MSW) is considered as prevalent global pollutants that cause serious risks to the environment and living organisms. Due to industrial and anthropogenic activities, the accumulation of heavy metals in the environmental matrices is increasing alarmingly. MSW causes several adverse environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, river plastic accumulation, and other environmental pollution. Indigenous microorganisms (Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Bacillus, Nitrosomonas, etc.) with the help of new pathways and metabolic channels can offer the potential approaches for the treatment of pollutants. Microorganisms, that exhibit the ability of bioaccumulation and sequestration of metal ions in their intracellular spaces, can be utilized further for the cellular processes like enzyme signaling, catalysis, stabilizing charges on biomolecules, etc. Microbiological techniques for the treatment and remediation of heavy metals provide a new prospects for MSW management. This review provides the key insights on profiling of heavy metals in MSW, tolerance of microorganisms, and application of indigenous microorganisms in bioremediation. The literatures revealed that indigenous microbes can be exploited as potential agents for bioremediation.

River floodplain ecosystems host one of the highest freshwater molluscan biodiversity on Earth. However, multiple human disturbances, such as loss of hydrological connectivity and deterioration of water quality, are seriously threatening most floodplain lakes throughout the world. Given the high imperilment rate of freshwater molluscs but the scarcity of studies examining the anthropogenic effects on this fauna, we test the response of mollusc assemblages to river-lake disconnection and eutrophication in 30 lakes in the Yangtze River floodplain, China. The species richness of entire Mollusca, Gastropoda and Bivalvia and 6 dominant families were all much lower at disconnected lakes than that in connected lakes, and decreased with increasing water eutrophication. The assemblage structure differed significantly among four lake groups for datasets based on entire Mollusca, Gastropoda and Bivalvia, indicating the serious impacts of hydrological disconnection and eutrophication. Moreover, the connected lakes showed significantly lower values of average taxonomic distinctness (Δ⁺) but higher values of variation in taxonomic distinctness (Λ⁺) than disconnected lakes. Such variations were triggered by the extirpation of congeneric and endemic species (mainly from families Unionidae and Viviparidae), which giving a waring of the loss of mollusc endemism in this region. In general, the present study showed that river-lake disconnection and deterioration of water quality resulted in serious biodiversity declines of both gastropods and bivalves in the Yangtze River floodplain lakes. A systematic approach including restoration of river-lake connectivity and habitats and improvement of water quality should be implemented in the conservation planning in this large river floodplain.

Investigating the migration and transformation of carbonaceous and nitrogenous matter in the cryosphere areas is crucial for understanding global biogeochemical cycle and earth's climate system. However, water-soluble organic constituents and their transformation in multiple water bodies are barely investigated. Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and organic nitrogen (WSON), and particulate black carbon (PBC) in multiple types of water bodies in eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) cryosphere for the first time have been systematically investigated. Statistical results exhibited that from south to north and from east to west of this region, WSOC concentrations in alpine river runoff were gradually elevated. WSOC and nitrogenous matter in the alpine river runoff and precipitation in the glacier region presented distinct seasonal variations. WSON was the dominant component (63.4%) of water-soluble total nitrogen in precipitation over high-altitude southeastern TP cryosphere. Water-soluble carbonaceous matter dominated the carbon cycle in the TP cryosphere, but particulate carbonaceous matter in the alpine river runoff had a small fraction of the cryospheric carbon cycle. Analysis of optical properties illustrated that PBC had a much stronger light absorption ability (MAC-PBC: 2.28 ± 0.37 m² g⁻¹) than WSOC in the alpine river runoff (0.41 ± 0.26 m² g⁻¹). Ionic composition was dominated by SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, and NH₄⁺ (average: 45.13 ± 3.75%) in the snow of glaciers, implying important contribution of (fossil fuel) combustion sources over this region. The results of this study have essential implications for understanding the carbon and nitrogen cycles in high altitude cryosphere regions of the world. Future work should be performed based on more robust in-situ observations and measurements from multiple environmental medium over the cryosphere areas, to ensure ecological protection and high-quality development of the high mountain Asia.

Air pollution and extreme heat have been responsible for more than a million deaths in China every year, especially in densely urbanized regions. While previous studies intensively evaluated air pollution episodes and extreme heat events, a limited number of studies comprehensively assessed atmospheric hot-and-polluted-episodes (HPE) – an episode with simultaneously high levels of air pollution and temperature – which have potential adverse synergic impacts on human health. This study focused on the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China due to its high temperature in summer and poor air quality throughout a year. We employed geostatistical downscaling to model meteorology at a spatial resolution of 1 km, and applied a machine learning algorithm (XGBoost) to estimate a high-resolution (1 km) daily concentration of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) and ozone (O₃) for June to October over 20 years (2000–2019). Our results indicate an increasing trend (∼50%) in the frequency of HPE occurrence in the first decade (2000–2010). Conversely, the annual frequency of HPE occurrence reduced (16.7%), but its intensity increased during the second decade (2010–2019). The northern cities in the PRD region had higher levels of PM₂.₅ and O₃ than their southern counterparts. During HPEs, regional daily PM₂.₅ exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese guideline levels by 75% and 25%, respectively, while the O₃ exceeded the WHO O₃ standard by up to 69%. Overall, 567,063 (95% confidence interval (CI): 510,357–623,770) and 52,231 (95%CI: 26,116–78,346) excessive deaths were respectively attributable to exposure to PM₂.₅ and O₃ in the PRD region. Our findings imply the necessity and urgency to formulate co-benefit policies to mitigate the region's air pollution and heat problems.

For the first time, a quantitative assessment of this pollutant was made at the bottom of the rivers of the Mekong basin, and the features of its accumulation and dynamics in bottom sediments and relationship with abundance of fish and decapods were investigated. Sampling of materials for the research was carried out by bottom trawls in the Mekong delta in Vietnam. The amount of macroplastic caught by the trawl from the bottom averaged 33.4 g/100 m². The maximum values of the waste content (up to 923.2 g/100 m²) were confined to the districts of large cities. The distribution of macroplastic was characterized by high spatio-temporal variability. Its amount was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in branches with low monthly flow, in shallow-water areas, as well as in the low-water period. During the flood period, which usually lasts from July to November, the amount of macroplastic at the bottom decreased by an average of 2.5 times. In this study a significant relationship between the number of animals and the mass of macroplastics was statistically proven for most species of fish and decapods. The substrate, containing a significant amount of plastic fragments, attracted aquatic organisms. All in all, we present results for poorly understood processes of transport, deposition and influence of plastic debris in large rivers in regions of monsoon subequatorial climate and show that more efforts should be dedicated to further unravel potentially complex pathways of the plastic exposure to water ecosystems.

Cooking is an important source of organic aerosols (OA), particularly in urban areas, but it has not been explicitly included in current emission inventories in China. This study estimated the organic aerosol emissions from cooking during winter over the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. Using the retrieved hourly cooking organic aerosol (COA) concentrations at two sites in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, population density, and daily per capita COA emissions, we determined the spatial and temporal distribution of COA emissions over the PRD region based on two approaches by treating COA as non-volatile (NVCOA) and semi-volatile (SVCOA), respectively. By using the estimated COA emissions and the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with chemistry (WRF-Chem) model, we reproduced the diurnal cycles of COA concentrations at the PolyU site in Hong Kong and Panyu site in Guangzhou. We also resolved the different patterns of COA between weekdays and weekends. The mean COA concentration during wintertime over the urban areas of the PRD region was 0.7 μg m⁻³ and 0.9 μg m⁻³ for the NVCOA and SVCOA cases, respectively, contributing 5.1% and 6.9% to the urban OA concentrations. The total COA emissions in winter over the PRD region were estimated to be 3.5 × 10⁸ g month⁻¹ and 3.8 × 10⁸ g month⁻¹ for the NVCOA and SVCOA cases, respectively, adding 34.8% and 37.8% to the total primary organic aerosol emissions. Considering COA emissions in the model increased the mean regional OA concentrations by 4.6% and 7.4% for the NVCOA and SVCOA cases, respectively. Our study therefore highlights the importance of cooking activities to OA concentrations in winter over the PRD region.

The deployment of aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) used for firefighting during emergencies and training often releases per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into the environment. In October 2018, first responders in Providence, RI, USA applied an AFFF during a fuel spill. Due to the proximity of the incident to the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay (NB), an unknown quantity of gasoline and AFFF entered the estuary via surface runoff and stormwater drains. Water samples near the spill were collected approximately 15 h after the incident and analyzed for 24 PFAS. Minor increases in measured PFAS concentrations were observed relative to pre- and post-spill samples at monitoring sites near the incident, except 6:2-fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2-FTS) that peaked post-spill (max 311 ng/L). After performing the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay on water samples and the AFFF concentrate, significant increases in perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) were observed. One compound, 6:2 fluorotelomer mercaptoalkylamido sulfonate (6:2-FTSAS), was identified as a major component of the AFFF used. Peak areas of 6:2-FTSAS and the degradation product 6:2-FTSAS-sulfoxide corresponded to observed increases in the TOP assay results and were useful as tracers of AFFF in surrounding waters. Elevated levels of PFAS at the time of sampling were limited to a confined area of the Providence River due to river flow and tidal action. Observed concentrations were also compared to hydrodynamic model results, and results confirmed rapid dissipation of AFFF components with distance from the spill. However, modeled results did not capture possible secondary releases of AFFF from local municipal stormwater and sewer infrastructure, as observational data suggest. The multiple lines of evidence of PFAS present in surface waters permitted a better assessment of the potential environmental impacts from products such as AFFF for which the chemical composition is largely unknown.

Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) is considered the main factor that induces eutrophication in water, and is readily influenced by hydrodynamic activities. In this study, a 4-year field investigation of nitrogen dynamics in a turbulent river was conducted, and a laboratory study was performed in the approximately homogeneous turbulence simulation system to investigate potential mechanisms involved in DIN transformation under turbulence. The field investigation revealed that, contrary to NO⁻₃ dynamics, the NH⁺₄ concentrations in water were lower in flood seasons than in drought seasons. Further laboratory results demonstrated that limitation of dissolved oxygen (DO) caused inactive nitrification and active denitrification in static river sediment. In contrast, the increased DO levels in turbulent river intensified the mineralization of organic nitrogen in sediment; moreover, ammonification and nitrification were activated, while denitrification was first activated and then depressed. Turbulence therefore decreased NH⁺₄ and NO⁻₂ concentrations, but increased NO⁻₃ and total DIN concentrations in the overlying water, causing the total DIN to increase from 0.4 mg/L to maximum of 1.0 and 1.7 mg/L at low and high turbulence, respectively. The DIN was maintained at 0.7 and 1.0 mg/L after the 30-day incubation under low and high turbulence intensities (ε) of 3.4 × 10⁻⁴ and 7.4 × 10⁻² m²/s³, respectively. These results highlight the critical role of DO in DIN budgets under hydrodynamic turbulence, and provide new insights into the DIN transport and transformation mechanisms in turbulent rivers.

Rehabilitation is often used to mitigate adverse effects of oil spills on wildlife. With an increase in production of alternatives to conventional crude oil such as diluted bitumen (dilbit), emergency spill responders and wildlife rehabilitators need information regarding the health and survival of free-ranging vertebrates exposed to dilbit under natural conditions. In 2010, one of the largest freshwater oil spills in the United States occurred in the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, when over 3.2 million liters of spilled dilbit impacted 56 km of riverine habitat. During 2010 and 2011 cleanup efforts, thousands of northern map turtles (Graptemys geographica) were captured from oiled stretches of the river, cleaned, rehabilitated, and released. We conducted extensive mark-recapture surveys in 2010, 2011, and 2018–2021, and used this dataset to evaluate the monthly survival probability of turtles 1–14 months post-spill and 8–11 years post-spill based on whether turtles were temporarily rehabilitated and released, overwintered in captivity and then released, or were released without rehabilitation. We found that rehabilitated or overwintered turtles had a higher probability of survival 1–14 months post-spill than non-rehabilitated turtles; however, 8–11 years post-spill the among-group differences in monthly survival probability had become negligible. Additionally, following the oil spill in 2010, nearly 6% of northern map turtles were recovered dead, died during rehabilitation, or suffered injuries that precluded release back into the wild. Our results demonstrate that exposure to dilbit in free ranging turtles causes direct mortality, while effort spent on the capture and rehabilitation of oiled freshwater turtles is important as it increases monthly survival 1–14 months post-spill.
