Copper has become one of the most important heavy metal pollutants in the environment because of its wide application and high toxicity, but research on water quality criteria (WQCs) on copper is limited, especially the derivation of seawater WQC. In addition, the toxicity of copper in the seawater system is affected by various environmental factors. Therefore, establishing a WQC that meets the characteristics of the regional environment is a top priority. The correlations between four factors of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the toxic effect values of copper were analyzed in this study, and the temperature was determined as the most influential factor among the four factors in the Bohai Sea. A specific correlation between temperature and the toxic effects of copper was identified, and WQCs were derived based on the identified correlation and the variations of the Bohai Sea's temperature in different seasons by species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method. Under the condition of the winter, spring, autumn, and summer with an average water temperature of 0.09, 15.96, 17.83, and 24.87 °C, the obtained short-term water quality criteria (SWQCs) were 44.29, 4.70, 4.31, and 3.33 μg/L; the long-term water quality criteria (LWQCs) were 18.14, 1.93, 1.77 and 1.36 μg/L. The findings indicated the importance of introducing specific environmental conditions during the derivation process. This work could provide valuable information for pollution prevention and aquatic life protection in the Bohai Sea and provide a valuable reference for the derivation of criteria in other regions alike.

The negative impact of microplastics (MPs) act as metals vectors to environment and ecosystem have been paid more and more attention, and the accumulation risk of them to human body through the food chains and food webs needs to attract attention. In addition, the MPs bonded with heavy metals transport from river into the sea with high salinity may also have metals release risk. Herein, natural aged microplastics prepared from artificially broken macroplastics adsorbed with heavy metals accumulated from the natural environment were tested for their states and release risk in several simulated solution (NaCl and gastrointestinal solutions) to understand their effects on environment and human health. The adsorption capacity of different heavy metals on MPs was different during natural aging process proved by four-acid digestion method. Metals with high accumulation (including Pb, As, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Co, Cu and Cd) on NAMPs were selected for further study. Results obtained via three-step extraction method showed that these heavy metals were mainly present as acid-extractable and reducible ions, which were characterized by high bioavailability. Release experiments suggested the notable Mn, Zn, As, Cr, Cu and Ni release in NaCl solution, and significant release of Mn, Zn, As, Cr, Cu, Pb and Ni in gastrointestinal solutions. The high metal release ratio in the simulated gastric solution was attributed to the weak binding of metal ions to NAMPs in acidic environment. This study will play a vital rule in assessing the ecological risks associated with MPs in natural environment.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have attracted extensive attention since this century due to their wide distribution, persistence, bioaccumulation/biomagnification potential, and (eco)toxicity. In the present study, we investigated the sorption kinetics, sorption isotherms and desorption behaviors of legacy and emerging PFASs with different chain lengths and functional end groups onto marine sediments at four different salinities (0, 10, 20, and 30 practical salinity units (psu)). Results revealed that the sorption of PFASs onto sediment can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. PFASs sorption was influenced by both compound-specific and solution-specific parameters. The distribution coefficient (Kd) for PFASs were increased with the increase of perfluorocarbon chain length and salinity, suggesting that hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were involved in the adsorption process. 6:2 FTSA showed the lowest adsorption among PFASs with eight carbon atoms (6:2 FTSA, PFOA and PFOS). The increase of perfluorocarbon chain length of PFASs and salinity would result in the decrease of desorption rate of PFASs from sediment. In addition, PFCAs were desorbed more easily from the sediment than the PFSAs with the same perfluorocarbon chain length at all salinity groups. The present study demonstrated that salinity can apparently influence the fate of PFASs in aquatic environment and provided valuable data for modeling the fate of PFASs in real environment.

To evaluate the chemical status of groundwater bodies (GWB) according to the European Groundwater Directive, EU Member States are required to take into account natural background levels (NBLs) where needed. Assessing the NBLs in coastal GWBs is complicated by seawater intrusion which can be amplified by groundwater withdrawals increasing the salinization of such groundwater systems. This paper proposes a new method for the NBLs assessment in coastal areas based on a double pre-selection (PS) with fixed/dynamic limits. A case study in the Apulia region, located in southeastern Italy, is proposed, where we investigated four adjacent GWBs which form the complex karst, fractured Murgia aquifer, hosted in the Jurassic-Cretaceous carbonate platform, bounded by two seas and sustained by saltwater of marine intrusion in the coastal areas. Data related to 139 monitoring stations (MSs) of the regional groundwater monitoring network were used. The first PS, “static”, based on a fixed limit of anthropogenic contamination markers (NO₃ and NH₄), allows for the elimination of MSs impacted by human activities. On these, the second PS, “dynamic”, based on the identification of Cl anomalous values, allows for the identification of additional MSs affected by saline contamination. The residual dataset of MSs was used for the definition of NBLs of Cl, SO₄, F and B. A statistical comparison with historical Cl observations finally allowed us to verify if the salinity of current groundwater is representative of pristine conditions. The calculated NBLs of salinity parameters are higher for the two coastal GWBs, with chloride values between 0.8 and 2 mg/L. Conversely, fluorides always show very low NBLs. The double PS approach seems more effective for NBLs calculation in coastal aquifers affected by saline contamination, where the use of a fixed Cl limit fails. It may respond to the international needs for a standardized procedure for NBL assessment.

During the last decades, the coastal areas of Morocco have witnessed an intense socioeconomic development associated with a continuous population growth and urban extension. This has led to an overexploitation of coastal aquifers leading to a degradation of their water quality. In order to obtain large scale overview on the quality status of Morocco's coastal aquifers (MCA) to assist national water managers to make informed decisions, a comprehensive scrutinization of the MCA against common indicators and using unified methods is essential. In this study, databases from thirteen MCA were analyzed, using multivariate statistical approaches and graphical methods in order to investigate the degree of mineralization in each aquifer and to identify the main salinization processes prevailing in groundwater. The results showed that the dominant groundwater types are Na–Cl, Ca–Mg–Cl, Ca–Mg–SO₄, Ca–Mg–HCO₃ and Ca–HCO₃–Cl. The Gibbs diagram and the seawater contribution (0–37%) indicate that the mineralization is mainly due to the seawater intrusion and water-rock interaction. The salinity degree diagram illustrates that almost all groundwater samples are located in the moderate to very saline zone, indicating that MCA are recharged by water from variable sources. The groundwater quality assessment shows a deterioration, particularly by seawater intrusion and significant nitrate pollution. The temporal evolution confirm that the MCA are influenced by seawater namely in the Atlantic part. The Wilcox and USSL diagram indicate that the majority of sampled water are unsuitable for irrigation uses. In addition, and by referring to the WHO and the Moroccan standards for water potability, large number of samples from the groundwaters of the MCA is not fully adequate for drinking purposes. A set of management actions (e,g., artificial recharge) are proposed in order to mitigate the effect of groundwater overexploitation and seawater intrusion to ensure the sustainability of MCA.

Bauxite residue, an industrial alkaline solid waste, has a low organic carbon content which hinders plant growth. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) drives many biogeochemical processes including carbon storage and soil formation in soils. Input of exogenous organic materials may provide organic carbon and accelerate soil formation processes in bauxite residue. However, the potential effects of ameliorants on the quantity and quality of DOM in bauxite residue are still poorly understood. Here, the integration of ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectra, fluorescence spectra, and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis were used to investigate the vertical characteristics of DOM in bauxite residue treated by PV (the combined addition of 2% phosphogypsum and 4% vermicompost, w/w) and BS (6% w/w including 4% bagasse and 2% bran) with 2-year column experiments. The content of DOM in untreated residues ranged from 0.064 to 0.096 g/kg, whilst higher contents of DOM were observed in PV (0.13 g/kg) and BS (0.26 g/kg) treatment. Meanwhile, with the increase of residue depth, the aromaticity and hydrophobic components of DOM in residue decreased, which indicated that the degree of humification of the treated residues in the upper layer was higher than that in the lower layer. Compared with BR, BS and PV treatment accumulated the related content of fulvic acid-like substance from 36.14% to 71.33% and 74.86%, respectively. The incorporation of vermicompost and biosolids increased the content of humic-like substances, whilst decreasing the content of protein-like substances in the surface layer, which may be due to the enrichment of the microbial community. During soil formation processes, the application of organic amendments reduced both salinity and alkalinity, enhanced microbial community diversity, and changed the quantity and quality of DOM in bauxite residue. These findings improve our understanding of the dynamics of DOM and response of DOM to soil formation processes in bauxite residue.

Many estuaries have undergone severe saltwater intrusion in addition to simultaneously experiencing serious heavy metal pollution. To explore the effect of water density stratification associated with saltwater intrusion on the behaviour of heavy metals (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Cd) in water and sediments, a field survey was conducted in a typical estuary (Modaomen). The content, distribution, and mobility of heavy metals were investigated, as well as the influence of environmental factors on their future. The results showed that Modaomen estuary was characterised by a notable variation in salinity along the estuary, presenting total freshwater upstream, high salinity stratification water in the mouth, and saltwater offshore. Dissolved metals presented a prominent gradient vertically, with 1.2–2.1 times higher in bottom water than in surface water and the highest contents in the highly–stratified bottom water. Elevated salinity and restricted mixing induced by water stratification were likely the causes of this outcome. The distribution of heavy metals in sediments was greatly governed by grain size, Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides, total organic carbon, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. Comprehensive evaluation, combined with total contents and chemical fractions of heavy metals, indicated that internal release from sediments contributed a considerable part to the higher levels of heavy metals in bottom water, particularly for Zn and Pb, which was fully consistent with their status in water body, and elevated salinity and lack of oxygen were likely the primary driving factors. During the phase-partition processes between bottom water and sediments, partitioning coefficients were markedly lower in the highly stratified zone, implying that saltwater intrusion facilitated the mobility and repartitioning processes of metals. Because of increased levels and toxicity of heavy metals in water and extended residence time during saltwater intrusion, the potential damage to the estuarine ecosystem should receive more attention.

Coastal tourist and industrial cities are most likely to have differential effects on the distance dilution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in an estuary system. This study used high-throughput fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction to identify sediment ARGs in two typical estuaries of coastal tourist and industrial cities (Xiamen and Taizhou) in China. The distance dilution of ARGs and its relationship with key environmental factors were analysed. The results indicated that along the river inlet towards the sea, the distance dilution effect on ARG abundance in estuary sediments of Taizhou was approximately double that in Xiamen, and the macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B (MLSB) and vancomycin genes were replaced by the fluoroquinolone, quinolone, florfenicol, chloramphenicol, and amphenicol (FCA) and β-lactam genes in Taizhou, whereas β-lactam genes succeeded the MLSB and sul genes in Xiamen. The abundance and number of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were positively correlated with the particle size and total organic carbon (TOC) contents of sediments, whereas they were negatively associated with the oxidation and reduction potential (Eₕ) and pH of sediments, as well as the seawater salinity. The sediment particle size (SPZ) was the dominant physicochemical factor affecting the abundance of ARGs (r = 0.826, p < 0.05) and MGEs (r = 0.850, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that although the distance dilution effect on the ARG abundance of estuary sediments of the industrial city is greater than that of the tourist city, the larger SPZ, higher TOC content, and lower salinity, pH, and Eₕ in estuary regions adjacent to the industrial city can more significantly facilitate the proliferation and propagation of ARGs in the sediments.

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid and its widespread contamination in agricultural soils along with soil salinization has become a serious concern for human health and food security. In the present study, the effect of cotton shell biochar (CSBC) in decreasing As-induced phytotoxicity and human health risks in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) grown on As-spiked saline and non-saline soils was evaluated. Quinoa plants were grown on As contaminated (0, 15 and 30 mg kg⁻¹) saline and non-saline soils amended with 0, 1 and 2% CSBC. Results showed that plant growth, grain yield, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll contents of quinoa showed more decline on As contaminated saline soil than non-saline soil. The application of 2% CSBC particularly enhanced plant growth, leaf relative water contents, stomatal conductance, pigment contents and limited the uptake of As and Na as compared to soil without CSBC. Salinity in combination with As trigged the production of H₂O₂ and caused lipid peroxidation of cell membranes. Biochar ameliorated the oxidative stress by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT). Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risks were greatly decreased in the presence of biochar. Application of 2% CSBC showed promising results in reducing human health risks and As toxicity in quinoa grown on As contaminated non-saline and saline soils. Further research is needed to evaluate the role of biochar in minimizing As accumulation in other crops on normal as well as salt affected soils under field conditions.

Six ecotypes of Typha domingensis Pers. Jahlar (E₁), Sheikhupura (E₂), Sahianwala (E₃), Gatwala (E₄), Treemu (E₅) and Knotti (E₆) from different ecological regions were collected to evaluate the leaf anatomical and biochemical attributes under different levels of salinity and nickel stress viz; L₀ (control), L₁ (100 mM + 50 mg kg⁻¹), L₂ (200 mM + 100 mg kg⁻¹) and L₃ (300 mM + 150 mg kg⁻¹). Presence of salt and Ni in rooting medium consistently affected growth, anatomical and physio-biochemical attributes in all Typha ecotypes. Discrete anatomical modifications among ecotypes such as reduced leaf thickness, increased parenchyma area, metaxylem cell area, aerenchyma formation and improved metaxylem vessels were recorded with increasing dose of salt and Ni. The minimum anatomical damages were recorded in E₁ and E₆ ecotypes. In all ecotypes, progressive perturbations in ionic homeostasis (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, N) due to salt and metal toxicity were evident along with reduction in photosynthetic pigments. Maximum enhancement in Catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Peroxidase (POD) and modulated Malondialdehyde (MDA) activity was recorded in E₁ and E₆ as compared to other ecotypes. Accumulation of large amounts of metabolites such as total soluble sugars, total free amino acids content in Jahlar, Knotti, Treemu and Sahianawala ecotypes under different levels of salt and Ni prevented cellular damages in T. domingensis Pers. The correlation analysis exhibited a close relationship among different levels of salinity and Ni with various plant attributes. PCA-Biplot verified our correlational analysis among various attributes of Typha ecotypes. An obvious separation of Typha characters in response to different salinity and Ni levels was exhibited by PC1. We recommend that genetic potential of T. domingensis Pers. To grow under salt and Ni stresses must be investigated and used for phytoremediation and reclamation of contaminated soil.
