Microplastics have attracted much attention in recent years because they are able to interact with other pollutants including pesticides, with implications for the potential risks to biota. However, the sorption behavior of pesticides on microplastics, especially on biodegradable microplastics which are promising alternatives to conventional polymers, has been insufficiently studied. In this study, triadimefon and difenoconazole were selected as model triazole fungicides, and their sorption behavior on a typical biodegradable microplastics (PBS: polybutylene succinate) and two conventional polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics was investigated with batch experiments in an aqueous solution. PBS presented the highest sorption capacity for triadimefon (104.2 ± 4.8 μg g⁻¹) and difenoconazole (192.8 ± 2.3 μg g⁻¹), which was 1.8- and 1.3-fold that on PE and 4.4- and 7.4-fold that of PVC, respectively. The results of sorption kinetic and isotherm modeling were better fit by a pseudo-second order model and linear model, respectively. More importantly, the effects of environmental factors (pH, salinity and dissolved organic matter) on the sorption behavior were investigated. Fungicide sorption on PBS was generally not affected by salinity, pH or dissolved organic matter. However, in contrast, salinity and dissolved organic matter both significantly decreased sorption on PE and PVC. The results showed that not only the sorption capacities of biodegradable microplastics but also their responses to environmental factors are quite different from those of conventional microplastics. This finding highlights the importance of the role played by biodegradable microplastics in the accumulation and transportation of organic pollutants.

Effects of contamination on aquatic organisms have been investigated and employed as biomarkers in environmental quality assessment for years. A commonly referenced aquatic organism, mollusks represent a group of major interest in toxicological studies. Both gastropods and bivalves have external mineral shells that protects their soft tissue from predation and desiccation. These structures are composed of an organic matrix and an inorganic matrix, both of which are affected by environmental changes, including exposure to hazardous chemicals. This literature review evaluates studies that propose mollusk shell alterations as biomarkers of aquatic system quality. The studies included herein show that changes to natural variables such as salinity, temperature, food availability, hydrodynamics, desiccation, predatory pressure, and substrate type may influence the form, structure, and composition of mollusk shells. However, in the spatial and temporal studies performed in coastal waters around the world, shells of organisms sampled from multi-impacted areas were found to differ in the form and composition of both organic and inorganic matrices relative to shells from less contaminated areas. Though these findings are useful, the toxicological studies were often performed in the field and were not able to attribute shell alterations to a specific molecule. It is known that the organic matrix of shells regulates the biomineralization process; proteomic analyses of shells may therefore elucidate how different contaminants affect shell biomineralization. Further research using approaches that allow a clearer distinction between shell alterations caused by natural variations and those caused by anthropogenic influence, as well as studies to identify which molecule is responsible for such alterations or to determine the ecological implications of shell alterations, are needed before any responses can be applied universally.

Sea level rise induced-salinization is lowering coastal soils productivity. In order to assess the effects that increased salinity may provoke in terrestrial plants, using as model species: Trifolium pratense, Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea and Vicia sativa, two specific objectives were targeted: i) to determine the sensitivity of the selected plant species to increased salinity (induced by seawater-SW or by NaCl, proposed as a surrogate of SW) and, ii) to assess the influence of salinization in total biomass under different agricultural practices (mono- or polycultures).The four plant species exhibited a higher sensitivity to NaCl than to SW. Festuca arundinacea was the most tolerant species to NaCl (EC₅₀,ₛₑₑd gₑᵣₘᵢₙₐₜᵢₒₙ and EC₅₀,gᵣₒwₜₕ of 18.6 and 10.5 mScm⁻¹, respectively). The other three species presented effective conductivities in the same order of magnitude and, in general, with 95% confidence limits overlapping. Soil moistened with SW caused no significant adverse effects on seed germination and growth of L. perenne. Similar to NaCl, the other three species, in general, presented a similar sensitivity to SW exposure with EC₅₀,ₛₑₑd gₑᵣₘᵢₙₐₜᵢₒₙ and EC₅₀,gᵣₒwₜₕ within the same order of magnitude and with confidence limits overlapping.The agricultural practice (mono-vs polyculture) showed some influence on the biomass of each plant species. When considering total productivity, for aerial and root biomass, it was higher in control comparatively to salinization conditions. Under salinization stress, the practice of polyculture was associated with a higher aerial and root total biomass than monocultures (for instance with combinations with T. pratense and F. arundinacea).Results suggest that the effects of salinity stress on total productivity may be minimized under agricultural practices of polyculture. Thus, this type of cultures should be encouraged in low-lying coastal ecosystems that are predicted to suffer from salinization caused by seawater intrusions.

Microplastics have attracted much attention in recent years as they can interact with pollutants in water environment. However, nanoplastics (NPs) with or without the surface functionalization modification have not been thoroughly explored. Here, the sorption behaviors of two fluoroquinolones (FQs), including norfloxacin (NOR) and levofloxacin (LEV) on polystyrene NPs (nano-PS) and carboxyl-functionalized polystyrene NPs (nano-PS-COOH) were investigated. The results showed that sorption isotherms were nonlinear and well fitted by Langmuir model. The sorption capacities of NOR and LEV on nano-PS-COOH were higher than those on nano-PS, and their physical interactions, including polar interaction, electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding may be the dominant mechanisms. Moreover, the increase of pH firstly increased the sorption of two FQs on NPs and then decreased because NOR and LEV had a reverse charge at different pH values. Salinity and dissolved organic matter both inhibited the sorption process. These findings show that NPs with or without the surface functionalization modification have different sorption behaviors for environmental pollutants, which deserve our further concern.

In this study, a novel rotating anode-based reactor (RAR) was designed to investigate its effectiveness in removing dissolved salts (i.e., Br⁻, Cl⁻, TDS, and SO₄²⁻) from saline water samples. Two configurations of an impeller’s rotating anode with various operation factors, such as operating time (min), rotating speed (rpm), current density (mA/cm²), temperature (°C), pH, and inter-electrode space (cm), were used in the desalination process. The total cost consumed was calculated on the basis of the energy consumption and aluminum (Al) used in the desalination. In this respect, operating costs were calculated using optimal operating conditions. Salinity was removed electrochemically from saline water through electrocoagulation (EC). Results showed that the optimal adjustments for treating saline water were carried out at the following conditions: 150 and 75 rpm rotating speeds for the impeller’s rod anode and plate anode designs, respectively; 2 mA/cm² current density (I), 1 cm² inter-electrode space, 25 °C temperature, 10 min operation time, and pH 8. The results indicated that EC technology with impeller plates of rotating anode can be considered a very cost-effective technique for treating saline water.

Marine oil spill often causes contamination of drinking water sources in coastal areas. As the use of oil dispersants has become one of the main practices in remediation of oil spill, the effect of oil dispersants on the treatment effectiveness remains unexplored. Specifically, little is known on the removal of dispersed oil from contaminated water using conventional adsorbents. This study investigated sorption behavior of three prototype activated charcoals (ACs) of different particle sizes (4–12, 12–20 and 100 mesh) for removal of dispersed oil hydrocarbons, and effects of two model oil dispersants (Corexit EC9500A and Corexit EC9527A). The oil content was measured as n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). Characterization results showed that the smallest AC (PAC100) offered the highest BET surface area of 889 m2/g and pore volume of 0.95 cm3/g (pHPZC = 6.1). Sorption kinetic data revealed that all three ACs can efficiently adsorb Corexit EC9500A and oil dispersed by the two dispersants (DWAO-I and DWAO-II), and the adsorption capacity followed the trend: PAC100 > GAC12 × 20 > GAC4 × 12. Sorption isotherms confirmed PAC100 showed the highest adsorption capacity for dispersed oil in DWAO-I with a Freundlich KF value of 10.90 mg/g∙(L/mg)1/n (n = 1.38). Furthermore, the presence of Corexit EC9500A showed two contrasting effects on the oil sorption, i.e., adsolubilization and solubilization depending on the dispersant concentration. Increasing solution pH from 6.0 to 9.0 and salinity from 2 to 8 wt% showed only modest effect on the sorption. The results are useful for effective treatment of dispersed oil in contaminated water and for understanding roles of oil dispersants.

Contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been observed at high elevation environments; however, the occurrence and spatial variation of PAHs in alpine lakes of China is not well understood. We measured 15 priority PAHs in the sediments of Lake Qinghai in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and assessed their distribution, source, and ecological risks. The total PAH concentration ranged from 30.4 to 125.2 ng g⁻¹. Low molecular weight PAHs were dominant in the sediments, suggesting a local source for the emissions. Sediment sites closer to local settlements and rivers had higher concentration of PAHs. The concentration of PAHs was significantly correlated with pH, probably as a result of the high salinity of the lake, while it was not significantly correlated with organic matter content. Molecular diagnostic ratio analysis indicated that PAHs were derived mainly from coal and biomass combustion. Specifically, the positive matrix factorization model showed that petrogenic sources, vehicular emissions, biomass combustion, and coal combustion contributed for 11.6, 16.3, 23.6, and 48.5% of the PAHs, respectively. The risk quotient method was used to assess ecological risk of PAHs individually. The results indicate that indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, phenanthrene, and anthracene would produce moderate ecological risks in 5, 20, 65, 100, and 100% of the sediment sites, respectively, while the other 10 PAH homologues would scarcely produce any serious ecological risk. We used the hierarchical Archimedean copula integral assessment model to evaluate the integral risk of PAHs. The result showed that 10, 40, and 50% of the sediment sites belong to mid-high, low, and mid-low risk levels, respectively. The current concentration and risk levels of PAHs in this study might be used as a baseline to assess the influence of future anthropogenic activities.

The spread of carbapenemase-producing bacteria is a worldwide concern as it challenges healthcare, especially considering the insufficient development of antimicrobials. These microorganisms have been described not only in hospitals, but also in several environmental settings including recreational waters. Community exposure to antimicrobial-resistant bacteria through recreation might be relevant for human health, but risk assessment studies are lacking. Absence of effective and feasible monitoring in recreational aquatic matrices contributes to such a knowledge gap. Here, we aimed at assessing predictors of occurrence of medically relevant carbapenemase-producing bacteria in coastal waters. We quantitatively assessed recovery of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp. and Aeromonas spp. in superficial coastal waters showing distinct pollution history across one year, and registered data regarding tide regimen, 7-days pluviosity, salinity, pH, water temperature. We analyzed data using General Estimating Equation (GEE) to assess predictors of such occurrence. Our results suggest that the sampling site had the strongest effect over concentration of these antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms, followed by pollution indexes and tide regimen. Increased salinity, advanced sampling time, water temperature, rainfall and decrease of pH were related to decrease concentrations. We provide a list of factors that could be easily monitored and further included in models aiming at predicting occurrence of carbapenemase producers in coastal waters. Our study may encourage researchers to further improve this list and validate the model proposed, so that monitoring and future public policies can be developed to control the spread of antimicrobial resistance in the environment.

Removal of Hg(II) by biochar (BC) is a promising remediation technology. The high-salinity Spirulina residue (HSR) is a hazardous waste generated during extracting the pigment phycocyanin under high salinity conditions. Although HSR-derived BC (HSRBC) exhibited the excellent sorption capacity of Hg(II), the involved mechanisms have been rarely studied. In this study, we investigated the specific properties and Hg(II) sorption mechanisms of HSRBCs. Chloride and calcium minerals were formed in HSRBCs. Increments in carbonization temperature (from 350 to 700 °C) or time (from 90 to 540 min) led to the enhancement of aromaticity, porosity, and positive charge, but cracked oxygen-containing groups and C–N bonds. Further increase in carbonization temperature or time decreased the sorption of Hg(II). At environmentally relevant concentration of Hg(II) (2–4 mg/L), the sorption capacity (6.1–12.7 mg/g) obtained in HSRBC350 was comparable to activated carbon. Based on dual-mode isotherm, surface sorption accounted for 75–88% uptake, while precipitation accounted for 12–25% uptake. In addition, the C–O, CO, and CC groups were responsible for the monodentate/bidentate complexation and reduction, while Cl⁻ triggered Hg₂Cl₂ precipitation. Overall, this study provided a new insight in creating an excellent Hg(II) sorbent from hazardous waste, and revealed the sorption mechanisms for Hg(II) uptake.

A biofouling resistant passive sampler for ammonia, where the semi-permeable barrier is a microporous hydrophobic gas-diffusion membrane, has been developed for the first time and successfully applied to determine the time-weighted average concentration of ammonia in estuarine and coastal waters for 7 days. Strategies to control biofouling of the membrane were investigated by covering it with either a copper mesh or a silver nanoparticle functionalised cotton mesh, with the former approach showing better performance. The effects of temperature, pH and salinity on the accumulation of ammonia in the newly developed passive sampler were studied and the first two parameters were found to influence it significantly. A universal calibration model for the passive sampler was developed using the Group Method Data Handling algorithm based on seawater samples spiked with known concentrations of total ammonia under conditions ranging from 10 to 30 °C, pH 7.8 to 8.2 and salinity 20 to 35. The newly developed passive sampler is affordable, user-friendly, reusable, sensitive, and can be used to detect concentrations lower than the recently proposed guideline value of 160 μg total NH₃–N L⁻¹, for a 99% species protection level, with the lowest concentration measured at 17 nM molecular NH₃ (i.e., 8 μg total NH₃–N L⁻¹ at pH 8.0 and 20 °C). It was deployed at four field sites in the coastal waters of Nerm (Port Phillip Bay), Victoria, Australia. Good agreement was found between molecular ammonia concentrations obtained with passive and discrete grab sampling methods (relative difference, - 12% to - 19%).
