Mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxic element, can biomagnify through food webs once converted into methylmercury (MeHg). Some studies have found that selenium (Se) exposure may reduce MeHg bioaccumulation and toxicity, though this pattern is not universal. Se itself can also be toxic at elevated levels. We experimentally manipulated the relative concentrations of dietary MeHg and Se (as selenomethionine [SeMet]) for an aquatic grazer (the mayfly, Neocloeon triangulifer) and its food source (diatoms). Under low MeHg treatment (0.2 ng/L), diatoms exhibited a quadratic pattern, with decreasing diatom MeHg concentration up to 2.0 μg Se/L and increasing MeHg accumulation at higher SeMet concentrations. Under high MeHg treatment (2 ng/L), SeMet concentrations had no effect on diatom MeHg concentrations. Mayfly MeHg concentrations and biomagnification factors (concentration of MeHg in mayflies: concentration of MeHg in diatoms) declined with SeMet addition only in the high MeHg treatment. Mayfly MeHg biomagnification factors decreased from 5.3 to 3.3 in the high MeHg treatment, while the biomagnification factor was constant with an average of 4.9 in the low MeHg treatment. The benefit of reduced MeHg biomagnification was offset by non-lethal effects and high mortality associated with ‘protective’ levels of SeMet exposure. Mayfly larvae escape behavior (i.e., startle response) was greatly reduced at early exposure days. Larvae took nearly twice as long to metamorphose to adults at high Se concentrations. The minimum number of days to mayfly emergence did not differ by SeMet exposure, with an average of 13 days. We measured an LC50SₑMₑₜ for mayflies of 3.9 μg Se/L, with complete mortality at concentrations ≥6.0 μg Se/L. High reproductive mortality occurred at elevated SeMet exposures, with only 0–18% emergence at ≥4.12 μg Se/L. Collectively, our results suggest that while there is some evidence that Se can reduce MeHg accumulation at the base of the food web at specific exposure levels of SeMet and MeHg, Se is also toxic to mayflies and could lead to negative effects that extend across ecosystem boundaries.

Mercury (Hg) is a neurotoxic element with severe effects on humans and wildlife. Widely distributed by atmospheric deposition, it can also be localized near point sources such as mines. Mercury has been shown to reduce the reproduction of bird populations in field observations in North America and Europe, but studies are needed in Asia, where the majority of emissions now occur. We investigated the reproduction of two passerines, Japanese Tit (Parus minor) and Russet Sparrow (Passer rutilans), in a large-scale Hg mining district, and a non-mining district, both in Guizhou, southwest China. Concentrations of Hg were elevated in the mining district (blood levels of 2.54 ± 2.21 [SD] and 0.71 ± 0.40 μg/g, in adult tits and sparrows, respectively). However, we saw no evidence of decreased breeding there: metrics such as egg volume, nestling weight, hatching and fledgling success, were all similar between the different districts across two breeding seasons. Nor were there correlations at the mining district between Hg levels of adults or juveniles, and hatching or fledgling success, or nestling weight. Nest success was high even in the mining district (tit, 64.0%; sparrow: 83.1%). This lack of reproductive decline may be related to lower blood levels in nestlings (means < 0.15 μg/g for both species). Concentrations of selenium (Se), and Se-to-Hg molar ratio, were also not correlated to breeding success. Although blood levels of 3.0 μg/g have been considered as a threshold of adverse effects in birds, even leading to severe effects, we detected no population-level reproductive effects, despite ~25% of the adult tits being above this level. Future work should investigate different locations in the mining district, different life-stages of the birds, and a wider variety of species. The hypothesis that bird populations can evolve resistance to Hg in contaminated areas should also be examined further.

Selenium (Se) is both an essential micronutrient and a contaminant of concern that is of particular interest in mining-influenced waterbodies in Canada. The objective of this research was to characterize the trophic dynamics of selenium along a gradient of exposure concentrations in a Canadian boreal lake ecosystem. From June 20 to August 22, 2018, six limnocorrals (littoral, ∼3000 L enclosures) were spiked with mean measured concentrations of 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.4, 5.6 and 7.9 μg Se/L as selenite, and three limnocorrals served as untreated controls (background aqueous Se = 0.08–0.09 μg/L). Total Se (TSe) concentrations in water, periphyton, phytoplankton, sediment, benthic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton and female finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus; added on day 21 of the experiment) were measured throughout and at the end of the experiment. Total Se bioaccumulation by organisms was generally non-linear. Greater uptake by phytoplankton than periphyton was observed. Taxonomic differences in accumulation of TSe by invertebrates (Heptageniidae = Chironomidae > zooplankton) were observed as well. Fish muscle and ovary tissue TSe bioaccumulation was more variable than that at lower trophic levels and uptake patterns indicated that fish did not reach steady state concentrations. This research provides field-derived models for the uptake of Se by algae and invertebrates, and contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics of TSe bioaccumulation over a gradient of exposure concentrations in cold-water lentic systems.

Microbial selenite reduction has increasingly attracted attention from the scientific community because it allows the separation of toxic Se from waste sources with the concurrent recovery of Se nanoparticles, a multifunctional material in nanotechnology industries. In this study, four selenite-reducing bacteria, isolated from a river water sample, were found to reduce selenite by > 85% within 3 d of incubation, at ambient temperature. Among them, strain NDSe-7, belonging to genus Lysinibacillus, can reduce selenite and produce Se nanospheres in alkaline conditions, up to pH 10.0, and in salinity of up to 7.0%. This strain can reduce 80 mg/L of selenite to elemental Se within 24 h at pH 6.0–8.0, at a temperature of 30–40 °C, and salinity of 0.1–3.5%. Strain NDSe-7 exhibited potential for use in Se removal and recovery from industrial saline wastewater with high alkalinity. This study indicates that extremophilic microorganisms for environmental remediation can be found in a conventional environment.

Amphibian larvae are commonly used as indicators of aquatic ecosystem health because they are susceptible to contaminants. However, there is limited information on how species characteristics and trophic position influence contaminant loads in larval amphibians. Importantly, there remains a need to understand whether grazers (frogs and toads [anurans]) and predators (salamanders) provide comparable information on contaminant accumulation or if they are each indicative of unique environmental processes and risks. To better understand the role of trophic position in contaminant accumulation, we analyzed composite tissues for 10 metals from larvae of multiple co-occurring anuran and salamander species from 20 wetlands across the United States. We examined how metal concentrations varied with body size (anurans and salamanders) and developmental stage (anurans) and how the digestive tract (gut) influenced observed metal concentrations. Across all wetlands, metal concentrations were greater in anurans than salamanders for all metals tested except mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn). Concentrations of individual metals in anurans decreased with increasing weight and developmental stage. In salamanders, metal concentrations were less correlated with weight, indicating diet played a role in contaminant accumulation. Based on batches of similarly sized whole-body larvae compared to larvae with their digestive tracts removed, our results indicated that tissue type strongly affected perceived concentrations, especially for anurans (gut represented an estimated 46–97% of all metals except Se and Zn). This suggests the reliability of results based on whole-body sampling could be biased by metal, larval size, and development. Overall, our data shows that metal concentrations differs between anurans and salamanders, which suggests that metal accumulation is unique to feeding behavior and potentially trophic position. To truly characterize exposure risk in wetlands, species of different life histories, sizes and developmental stages should be included in biomonitoring efforts.

Selenium (Se) radioactive wastes can be disposed through stabilization/solidification (S/S) based on the cementitious matrix on hydration products, where hydrocalumite (Ca₂Al-LDH) is expected to play an important role in the retention of SeO₄²⁻. Natural organic matters (NOMs) are known to be a risk to affect the transportation and mobility of undesirable chemical species in the pedosphere which receives the low level radioactive wastes (LLW). In the present work, five amino acids were selected as the simplified models of NOMs in the pedosphere to explore their effects on the stability of Ca₂Al-LDH after immobilized SeO₄²⁻ under alkaline conditions. As the loading amount of amino acids on Ca₂Al-LDH increasing, release of SeO₄²⁻ was enhanced in HGly, H₂Asp, and H₂Cys series, while no enhancement was observed in HPhe and HTrp series. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation predicted ion-exchange of amino acids and CO₃²⁻ with SeO₄²⁻ in a unit cell of LDH model. The intercalation of Asp²⁻ and CO₃²⁻ caused 003 peaks in XRD sharper and d₀₀₃ decreased from 8.15 Å to 7.70 Å which is assigned to Ca₂Al-LDH(Asp, CO₃). In H₂Cys series, the 003 peaks were kept broad and SeO₄²⁻ was still relatively maintained in LDH which was caused by the lower amounts of intercalated CO₃²⁻ in the presence of H₂Cys. Amino acids in the interlayer of Ca₂Al-LDH have several possible configurations, where the most stable one is prone to be in a horizontal direction through hydrogen bonds and Ca–O chemical bonds. This provides an insight on the stability of selenate immobilized in hydrocalumite, which can be produced in cement disposing in the pedosphere for a long term of burying. Not only carbonate but also small molecular organic matters like amino acids possibly give environmental impact on the mobility of low level anionic radionuclides in LDH.

Detailed, high resolution time-series observations were performed to investigate sources, diel cycling, natural attenuation, and loadings of dissolved trace metals/metalloids in a subtropical headwater stream draining intensive horticulture in Australia. A transect of ∼3 km away from the source (farms) showed >75% reduction in concentration and loads of most trace elements. Mercury and arsenic had elevated loads downstream relative to other elements. Hourly time-series sampling revealed elevated creek discharge at night, accompanied by elevated nickel, selenium, copper, and mercury loads. Inputs from groundwater or treated sewage used for irrigation within the catchment are likely sources. Groundwater bore and treated sewage samples were highly contaminated with either zinc, copper, or mercury. Comparisons of daily and hourly samples indicated common sampling strategies can underestimate horticultural contaminant loadings. Load estimates for mercury and copper derived from hourly samples were 1.6- to 7- fold greater than loads from daily sample data collected over 79 days with varying rainfall. These high contaminant concentrations and loads are of concern to food products receiving irrigation and protected waterbodies downstream.

It is widely recognized that apex predators, such as large sharks with highly migratory behavior, are particularly vulnerable to pollution, mainly due to biomagnification processes. However, in highly impacted areas, mesopredator sharks with resident behavior can be as vulnerable as apex sharks. In this context, this study evaluated cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and rubidium (Rb) concentrations, as well as the potentially protective effects of selenium (Se) and the behavior of two non-enzymatic biomarkers, metallothionein (MT) and reduced glutathione (GSH), employing the Atlantic nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum as a study model and compared the results with other resident benthic sharks, as well as highly mobile apex sharks. Muscle tissue samples from 28 nurse sharks opportunistically sampled from the Brazilian Amazon Coast were analyzed. Lower metal concentrations were observed for Pb, Rb and Se in the rainy season, while statistically significant correlations between metals were observed only between Hg and Cd and Pb and Se. Molar ratio calculations indicate potential protective Se effects against Pb, but not against Cd and Hg. No associations between MT and the determined metals were observed, indicating a lack of detoxification processes via the MT detoxification route. The same was noted for GSH, indicating no induction of this primary cellular antioxidant defense. Our results indicate that benthic/mesopredator sharks with resident behavior are, in fact, as impacted as highly mobile apex predators, with the traditional detoxification pathways seemingly inefficient for the investigated species. Moreover, considering the studied population and other literature data, pollution should be listed as a threat to the species in future risk assessments.

Dietary exposure to chemicals alters the diversity of microbiome communities and can lead to pathophysiological changes in the gastrointestinal system. The organochlorine pesticide dieldrin is a persistent environmental contaminant that bioaccumulates in fatty tissue of aquatic organisms. The objectives of this study were to determine whether environmentally-relevant doses of dieldrin altered gastrointestinal morphology and the microbiome of zebrafish. Adult zebrafish at ∼4 months of age were fed a measured amount of feed containing either a solvent control or one of two doses of dieldrin (measured at 16, and 163.5 ng/g dry weight) for 4 months. Dieldrin body burden levels in zebrafish after four-month exposure were 0 (control), 11.47 ± 1.13 ng/g (low dose) and 18.32 ± 1.32 ng/g (high dose) wet weight [mean ± std]. Extensive histopathology at the whole organism level revealed that dieldrin exposure did not induce notable tissue pathology, including the gastrointestinal tract. A repeated measure mixed model analysis revealed that, while fish gained weight over time, there were no dieldrin-specific effects on body weight. Fecal content was collected from the gastrointestinal tract of males and 16S rRNA gene sequencing conducted. Dieldrin at a measured feed dose of 16 ng/g reduced the abundance of Firmicutes, a phylum involved in energy resorption. At the level of class, there was a decrease in abundance of Clostridia and Betaproteobacteria, and an increase in Verrucomicrobiae species. We used a computational approach called predicted relative metabolomic turnover (PRMT) to predict how a shift in microbial community composition affects exchange of metabolites. Dieldrin was predicted to affect metabolic turnover of uroporphyrinogen I and coproporphyrinogen I [enzyme]−cysteine, hydrogen selenide, selenite, and methyl-selenic acid in the fish gastrointestinal system. These pathways are related to bacterial heme biosynthesis and selenium metabolism. Our study demonstrates that dietary exposures to dieldrin can alter microbiota composition over 4 months, however the long-term consequences of such impacts are not well understood.

The relationship between heavy metal(loid)s exposure and oxidative stress damage is a matter of research interest. Our study aimed to investigate the distribution patterns of the nine heavy metal(loid)s in blood of pregnant women, including four toxic heavy metal(loid)s [arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg)] and five typical heavy metal(loid)s [manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se)] in blood. Blood samples of 348 women were collected and their concentrations in the serum (sr) and blood cells (bc) were measured, as well as serum heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) (an oxidative stress marker). Total blood (tb) concentrations of these metal(loid)s and serum-to-blood cell concentration ratios (sr/bc) were further calculated. We found Cu mainly accumulated in the serum compared to the blood cells with Cuˢʳ/ᵇᶜ = 2.30, whereas Co, Se, and As evenly distributed between these two fractions. Other metal(loid)s mainly concentrated in the blood cells. Coˢʳ, Cuˢʳ, Cuᵇᶜ, Mnᵇᶜ, Znᵇᶜ, Cdᵇᶜ, Coᵗᵇ, Cuᵗᵇ, Mnᵗᵇ, Znᵗᵇ, Cdᵗᵇ, and Cuˢʳ/ᵇᶜ were negatively associated with serum HO-1, whereas Asˢʳ, Asᵇᶜ, Asᵗᵇ, Znˢʳ/ᵇᶜ, Cdˢʳ/ᵇᶜ, and Hgˢʳ/ᵇᶜ were positively, indicating of their potential toxicity. We concluded that the distribution patterns of blood heavy metal(loid)s, in particular for Cd, Hg and Zn, which either increased in serum or decreased in blood cells, might be associated with elevated serum oxidative stress, should be considered in environmental health assessments.
