Over three different seasons, seawater, porewater and sediment samples were collected from Jinzhou Bay, a previously heavily contaminated bay, to quantitatively assess the benthic flux of trace metals after a reduction in fluvial/sewage discharge for almost three decades. The spatial distribution patterns of trace metals in seawater, surface sediment, as well as the vertical distribution patterns of metals in porewater and solid phases in short sediment cores were reported. Metal concentrations in seawater and sediment all showed much higher Cd and Zn concentrations inside the Jinzhou Bay compared to the rest of Bohai Sea area. Zn, Ni, Pb and Co all had average benthic fluxes coming out of the sediments to the water column, contributing about 0.5%, 0.3%, 1.4% and 14% to their current standing stock in Jinzhou Bay. Seasonal difference was also identified in seawater and porewater, as well as in the benthic fluxes. In general, benthic fluxes and porewater concentrations all tended to be higher in summer, implying a close relationship between benthic flux and the temperature-dependent organic matter degradation process at the sediment-water interface.Currently, there are clearly still other sources, possibly fluvial/sewage discharge, as the main source of trace metals in Jinzhou Bay waters. For Cd and Cu, concentrations in the water column remain high on an annual basis indicating that sediment still acts as a sink. Conversely, for Pb, Zn, Co, and Ni, the sediment is beginning to act as a source to the water column. Although this may not yet be significant, it will become more and more important with time, and can last for hundreds to thousands of years.

Wastewater containing high concentrations of nitriles, if discharged without an appropriate nonhazardous disposal strategy, will cause serious environmental pollution. During secondary sewage biological treatment, most existing bacteria cannot endure high-concentration nitriles due to poor tolerance and low degradation ability. The Rhodococcus rhodochrous strain BX2 screened by our laboratory shows high resistance to nitriles and can efficiently degrade these compounds. Compared with sole high-concentration nitriles present in the biodegradation process, the addition of glucose at a suitable concentration can effectively increase the biomass of BX2, promote the expression of nitrile-degrading enzyme genes, improve the activities of these enzymes and enhance the pollutant removal efficiency via carbon catabolite repression (CCR) mechanisms. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the four key regulators of CCR identified in gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria are concomitant in BX2. This study provides an economically feasible strategy for the microbial remediation of high-concentration nitriles and other organic pollutants.

Urine, which is an important waste biomass resource, is the main source of nitrogen in sewage and contains large quantities of emerging contaminants (ECs). In this study, we propose a new method to efficiently remove urine, simultaneously eliminate ECs, and control the generation of toxic chlorate during urine treatment using a photoelectrocatalytic-chlorine (PEC-Cl) system. A type-II heterojunction of WO₃/BiVO₄ was used as a photoanode to generate chlorine radicals (Cl•) by decreasing the oxidation potential of WO₃ valence band for the highly selective conversion of urine to N₂ and the simultaneous degradation of ECs in an efficient manner. The method presented surprising results. It was observed that the amount of toxic chlorate was significantly inhibited by circumventing the over-oxidation of Cl⁻ by holes or hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Moreover, the removal of urea nitrogen reached 97% within 90 min, while the degradation rate of trimethoprim in urine was above 98.6% within 60 min, which was eight times more than that in the PEC system (12.1%). Compared to the bare WO₃ photoanode, the toxic chlorate and nitrate generated by the WO₃/BiVO₄ heterojunction photoanode decreased by 61% and 44%, respectively. Thus, this study provides a safe, efficient, and environmentally-friendly approach for the disposal of urine.

The occurrence of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in the environment is becoming a major area of concern due to their undesirable effects on non-target organisms. This study investigated the occurrence and risk of contamination by five antibiotics and three antiretrovirals drugs in a fast-growing peri-urban area in Kenya, with inadequate sewer system coverage. Due to poor sewage connectivity and poorly designed decentralized systems, wastewater is directly released in open drains. Water and sediment samples were collected from open surface water drains, while wastewater samples were collected from centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Solid-phase extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction for the aqueous and sediment samples respectively were carried out and extracts analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) using isotopically labeled internal standards. APIs were observed with the detection frequency ranging from 36% to 100%. High mean concentrations of 48.7 μg L⁻¹, 108 μg L⁻¹, and 532 μg L⁻¹ were observed in surface drains for Lamivudine (3 TC), Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), Ciprofloxacin (CIP) respectively. Drain sediments also showed high concentrations of APIs ranging from 2.1 to 13,100 μg kg⁻¹. APIs in this study exceeded those observed in existing literature studies. JKUAT WWTP removal efficiencies varied from −90.68% to 72.67%. Total APIs emission load of the study area was 3550 mg d⁻¹ with WWTP effluent contributing higher loads (2620 mg d⁻¹) than surface water drains (640 mg d⁻¹). Zidovudine (ZDV), nevirapine (NVP), and trimethoprim (TMP) loads in drains, however, exceeded WWTP effluent. Low to high ecotoxicity risk of the individual APIs were observed to the aquatic environment, with high risks for the development of antibiotic resistance in microbiome as determined by the risk quotient (RQ) approach. Risk management through efficient wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment is necessary to suppress the measured concentrations.

Propylparaben is widely used as a preservative in pharmaceuticals and personal care products and is ultimately excreted by the human body. Thus, propylparaben reaches sewage and enters the soil environment by sludge fertilization and wastewater irrigation. However, there are few existing studies on the toxicity and risks of such chemicals in terrestrial environments. In this study, a multispecies bioassay for propylparaben was performed and protective concentrations (PCs) were derived based on toxicity values by probabilistic ecological risk assessment. Acute and chronic bioassays were conducted on 11 species in eight taxonomic groups (Magnoliopsida, Liliopsida, Clitellata, Entognatha, Entomobryomorpha, Chromadorea, Chlorophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae). Based on the toxicity values calculated, the PC₉₅ values for acute and chronic SSDs were 13 and 6 mg/kg dry soil, respectively. Toxicity varied among taxa, with soil algae emerging as the most sensitive to propylparaben. This may be attributable to differences in exposure pathways among species. The exposure pathway of propylparaben can be altered by adsorption to soil particles. As parabens are presently under-regulated globally in terms of their environmental effects, our findings can serve as the basis to propose standard values for environmental protection.

The Sürgü Stream, located in the Euphrates River basin of Turkey, is used for drinking water source, agricultural irrigation and rainbow trout production. Therefore, water quality of the stream is of great importance. In this study, multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs) and water quality index (WQI) were applied to assess water quality of the stream affected by multiple stressors such as untreated domestic sewage, effluents from fish farms, agricultural runoff and streambank erosion. For this, 16 water quality parameters at five sites along the stream were monitored monthly during one year. Most of parameters showed significant spatial variations, indicating the influence of anthropogenic activities. All parameters except TN (total nitrogen) showed significant seasonal differences due to high seasonality in WT (water temperature) and water flow. The spatial variations in the WQI were significant (p < 0.05) and the mean WQI values ranged from 87.6 to 95.3, indicating “good” to “excellent” water quality in the stream. Cluster analysis classified five sites into three groups, that is, clean region, low polluted region and very clean region. Stepwise temporal discriminant analysis (DA) identified that pH, WT, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, COD (chemical oxygen demand), TSS (total suspended solids) and Ca²⁺ are the parameters responsible for variations between seasons, and stepwise spatial DA identified that DO (dissolved oxygen), EC (electrical conductivity), NH₄–N, TN (total nitrogen) and TSS are the parameters responsible for variations between the regions. Principal component analysis/factor analysis revealed that the parameters responsible for water quality variations were mainly associated with suspended solids (both natural and anthropogenic), soluble salts (natural) and nutrients and organic matter (anthropogenic).

Reservoirs are lentic man-made waterbodies resulting from river damming processes. Pollutants coming from adjacent areas can accumulate in the water and sediment of these modified freshwater environments. Fish are often found in reservoirs occupying several trophic niches. Biochemical biomarkers are early warning signals of environmental disturbance to an organism. It is essential to understand how pollutants, abiotic variables and biochemical biomarker responses behave throughout the seasons to implement biomonitoring programs. Loricariichthys anus and Geophagus brasiliensis were collected, and abiotic variables were seasonally measured for one year, at six sampling sites in Passo Real reservoir, in a subtropical region of Southern Brazil. Biochemical biomarkers were analyzed in four tissues of both fish species, as well as metal and pesticide concentrations in the reservoir’s water and sediment. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was carried out to find the temporal relationship between biomarkers and environmental variables. RDA has clearly shown the separation of seasons for both species. Azoxystrobin, simazine and propoxur were the pesticides mostly contributing to the variation, whereas metals had lesser contribution to it. Seasonality appears to be the main factor explaining biomarkers’ variability. PERMANOVA has confirmed the effect of temperature and dissolved oxygen on biomarkers of both fish species. Thus, it is hard to differentiate if the fluctuation in biomarkers’ responses only reflects the normal state of organisms or it is a biological consequence from negative effects of fish exposure to several types of pollution (sewage, pesticides, and fertilizers) entering this aquatic system. In this study, to circumvent the seasonality issue on biomonitoring, the analysis of biomarkers on these fish should not be carried out in organs directly affected by temperature (such as liver and gills), or during reproduction periods (mainly in Spring).

Sulfate (SO₄²⁻) contamination in groundwater and surface water is an environmental problem of widespread concern. In this study, we combined stable isotope analyses of SO₄²⁻ (δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O) and water (δ²H and δ¹⁸O) with a Bayesian mixing model (SIAR), for the first time, to identify sources and transformation of SO₄²⁻ in an area of northern China with multiple potential sources of pollution. The overall values of δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O-SO₄²⁻ ranged from 1.3‰ to 16.3‰ and −3.8‰–8.8‰ in groundwater, and from −1.1‰ to 9.3‰ and 2.7‰–9.2‰ in surface waters, respectively. Analyses of SO₄²⁻ isotopes and water chemistry indicated that SO₄²⁻ in groundwater and surface water mainly originated from mixing of oxidation of sulfate, sewage, chemical fertilizers, dissolution of evaporite and precipitation. There was no significant correlation between δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O and SO₄²⁻ concentration in groundwater, indicating that bacterial sulfate reduction did not affect the SO₄²⁻ isotopic composition. SIAR model showed the main sources of SO₄²⁻ in groundwater and surface water comprised oxidation of sulfide minerals and sewage. In groundwater, oxidation of sulfide minerals and sewage accounted for 37.5–44.5% and 35.5–42.7% of SO₄²⁻, respectively. In regard to surface waters, the contribution of oxidation of sulfide minerals to SO₄²⁻ was higher in the wet season (31.8 ± 9.9%) than in the intermediate (22.4 ± 7.8%) and dry (20.9 ± 8.2%) seasons, but the contribution proportion of sewage was slightly lower in the wet season (19.9 ± 8.5%) than in the intermediate (23.8 ± 8.7%) and dry (24.2 ± 8.5%) seasons. This study indicates that it is necessary for local government to improve the treatment infrastructure for domestic sewage and optimize methods of agricultural fertilization and irrigation to prevent SO₄²⁻ contamination of groundwater and surface water.

Under the increasingly intensive measures for surface water restoration in China, point source discharge has been strictly regulated; however, for non-point sources, which constitute a large part of surface water pollutants, effective control has been difficult to reach. A comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of non-point source pollutants is essential for surface water improvement programs of cities such as Ningbo, on the southeast coast of China. Ningbo has made tremendous efforts in the past few years to control point source pollutants, but available data and management strategies on the non-point source pollutants are still limited. To this end, leachates of representative non-point source samples from the territory of Ningbo, including cropland and wetland soil, urban channel sediment, and poultry manure, were examined and compared focusing on the fluorescence characteristics and biodegradability of the dissolved organic matter (DOM). Results indicated that biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) accounting for the total DOC was 46.7 ± 0.7% for cropland, wetland (56.3 ± 6.8%), non-sewage channel (60.1 ± 0.4%), sewage channel (74.5 ± 1.1%), and poultry manure (62.7 ± 4.5%). The leachates of the studied samples showed significant differences in both the amount and composition of DOM. However, a fluorescence component representing tryptophan-like substances identified by the excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis effectively predicted the BDOC variations among the studied samples. Moreover, under the studied nutrient concentrations, which were equivalent to Grade III water quality in China, nutrient limitation of microbial degradation was not observed. Threats to water quality, especially excessive consumption of dissolved oxygen, could be posed by the non-point source leachates due to their high bioavailability, large distribution, and weak nutrient restraint. Further investigations, including a quantitative evaluation of the non-point source pollution contribution, and pollutant blocking techniques are required.

Given that studies on actual sewage treatment plants are often affected by environmental conditions, it is challenging to clearly understand the associated bioaerosol generation and diffusion characteristics during the aeration process. Therefore, to enhance understanding in this regard, in this study, bioaerosol generator was used to simulate bioaerosol generation and diffusion under two aeration modes, i.e., bubble bottom aeration and brush surface aeration. The total concentration range of culturable bacteria in the bioaerosol produced by bubble bottom aeration and that produced by brush surface aeration were 300–3000 CFU/m³. Under bubble bottom aeration, the generated bioaerosol was symmetrically distributed around the source point, whereas under brush surface aeration, it was primarily distributed in the forward direction of the rotating brush surface. These bioaerosols from bubble bottom aeration predominantly consisted of particles with sizes below 3.3 μm, particularly those with sizes in the range 1.1–2.1 μm. On the contrary, the bioaerosols produced via brush surface aeration predominantly consisted of particles with sizes above 3.3 μm. The distribution characteristics of population structure in the two aeration modes were consistent with the distribution characteristics of concentration in the corresponding models. Additionally, the results showed that when the aeration process is unaffected by environmental conditions (particle matters, wind direct, wind speed, etc.), the bioaerosol components originate primarily from the parent sewage or sludge, and do not diffuse far from the source point. Therefore, source reduction (capping or sealing) can be recommended as the primary control strategy for bioaerosols in sewage treatment plants. The adoption of such measures will significantly limit the diffusion of bioaerosols, thereby reducing the potential risks associated with human exposure.
