Plastic mulching and straw incorporation are common agricultural practices in China. Plastic mulching is suspected to be a significant source of microplastics in terrestrial environments. Straw incorporation has many effects on the storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) and greenhouse gas emissions, but these effects have not been studied in the presence of microplastic pollution. In this study, 365-day soil incubation experiments were conducted to assess the effects of maize straw and polyethylene microplastics on SOC fractions and carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions in two different soils (fluvo-aquic and latosol). Against the background of straw incorporation, microplastics reduced the mineralization and decomposition of SOC, resulting in a microbially available SOC content decrease by 18.9%. In addition, microplastics were carbon-rich, but relatively stable and difficult to be used by microorganisms, thus increasing the mineral-associated SOC content by 52.5%. This indicated that microplastics had adverse effects on microbially available SOC and positive effects on mineral-associated SOC. Microplastics also decreased coarse particulate SOC (>250 μm), and increased non-aggregated silt and clay aggregated SOC (<53 μm). Furthermore, microplastics changed microbial community compositions, thereby reducing the CO₂ and N₂O emissions of straw incorporation by 26.5%–33.9% and 35.4%–39.7%, respectively. These results showed that microplastics partially offset the increase of CO₂ and N₂O emissions induced by straw incorporation. Additionally, the inhibitory effect of microplastics on CO₂ emissions in fluvo-aquic soil was lower than that in latosol soil, whereas the inhibitory effect on N₂O emissions had the opposite trend.

The performance of the radon (²²²Rn)-deficit technique has been evaluated at a site in which a complex DNAPL mixture (mostly hexachlorocyclohexanes and chlorobenzenes) has contaminated all four layers (from top to bottom: anthropic backfill, silt, gravel and marl) of the soil profile. Soil gas samples were collected at two depths (0.8 m and 1.7 m) in seven field campaigns and a total of 186 ²²²Rn measurements were performed with a pulse ionization detector. A statistical assessment of the influence of field parameters on the results revealed that sampling depth and atmospheric pressure did not significantly affect the measurements, while the location of the sampling point and ground-level atmospheric temperature did. In order to remove the bias introduced by varying field temperatures and hence to be able to jointly interpret ²²²Rn measurements from different campaigns, ²²²Rn concentrations were rescaled by dividing each individual datum by the mean ²²²Rn concentration of its corresponding field campaign. Rescaled ²²²Rn maps showed a high spatial correlation between ²²²Rn minima and maximum contaminant concentrations in the top two layers of the soil profile, successfully delineating the surface trace of DNAPL accumulation in the anthropic backfill and silt layers. However, no correlation could be established between ²²²Rn concentrations in superficial soil gas and contaminant concentration in the deeper two layers of the soil profile. These results indicate that the ²²²Rn-deficit technique is unable to describe the vertical variation of contamination processes with depth but can be an effective tool for the preliminary characterization of sites in which the distance between the inlet point of the sampling probe and the contaminant accumulation falls within the effective diffusion length of ²²²Rn in the affected soil profile.

Mining activities in the world's largest platinum mining area in South Africa have resulted in environmental contamination with Pt (e.g., the Hex River's vicinity). The present study compared a Pt mining area with a non-mining area along this river in terms of (1) metal concentrations in different grain size fractions from soils and aquatic sediments; (2) the toxicological potential of aquatic sediments based on the Consensus-Based Sediment Quality Guideline (CBSQG); and (3) the chronic toxicity of aqueous eluates from soils and sediments to Caenorhabditis elegans. Platinum concentrations were higher in the mining area than in the non-mining area. For most metals, the sediment silt and clay fraction contained the highest metal concentrations. Based on the CBSQG, most sampling sites exhibited a high toxicological potential, driven by Cr and Ni. Eluate toxicity testing revealed that C. elegans growth, fertility, and reproduction inhibition were not dependent on mining activities or the CBSQG predictions. Toxicity was instead likely due to Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pt, and Pb. In conclusion, the investigated region is loaded with a high geogenic background resulting in high reproduction inhibition. The mining activities lead to additional environmental metal contamination (particularly Pt), contributing to environmental soil and sediment toxicity.

The sedimentary history of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) over the past 140 years in a lake sediment core from Huixian karst wetland was reconstructed. The total PAHs and OCPs concentrations ranged from 40.0 to 210 ng g⁻¹ and 0.98 to 31.4 ng g⁻¹, respectively. The vertical distribution of PAHs and OCPs in different stages was great consistent with the history of regional socio-economic development and the usage of OCPs. As the indicators of socio-economic development, gross domestic product (GDP), population, energy consumption, highway mileage, and private vehicles correlated with the PAHs concentrations, indicating the impact of human activities on PAHs levels. The PAHs and OCPs concentrations were also affected by environmental changes in the wetland, as reconstructed by total organic carbon (TOC), sand, silt, clay, quartz, and calcite in sediments. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results showed TOC was the dominant factor to explain the concentrations of PAHs and OCPs with the explanation of 86.7% and 43.5%, respectively. In addition, TOC content had significantly positive correlation with PAHs (0.96, p < 0.01) and OCPs (0.78, p < 0.01). In particular, the significantly positive correlation (p < 0.05) between calcite and PAHs and OCPs inferred that karstification might play an important role in the migration of PAHs and OCPs in the karst area. Therefore, the lake in Huixian wetland tended to be a sink more than a source of PAHs and OCPs influenced by the increasing TOC content and karstification under climate warming.

The focus of this study was to determine the depth-wise variability of physicochemical properties (i.e., pH, TOC, TN, and EC), and heavy metals (i.e., Pb, Cu, Zn, As, and Cr) concentration, and the associated biological and ecological risks of the mangrove sediment. The accumulation of metal contents and the phytoremediation and phytoextraction were also investigated in a mangrove species, Acanthus ilicifolius. The mangrove sediment consists of a higher proportion of sand fraction (56.6–74.7%) followed by clay (10–28%) and silt (10.1–15. 7%) fractions. The concentrations (mg/kg) of Pb, Cu, Zn, As, and Cr were ranged from 22.05–34.3, 8.58–22.77, 85.07–114, 5.56–12.91, and 0.98–5.12 in all the sediment layers. The hierarchy of the mean metal concentration in sediment was Zn (102 mg/kg) > Pb (25.6 mg/kg) > Cu (14.8 mg/kg) > As (8.79 mg/kg) > Cr (2.74 mg/kg) respectively. The examined metal concentrations were below the respective average shale values (ASVs). The degree of environmental, ecological, and biological risks was minimal according to various pollution indices like geoaccumulation index (Igₑₒ), contamination factor (CF), and pollution load index (PLI). According to sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the adverse biological risk effect was not likely to occur. The result of the potential ecological risk index (PERI) demonstrated that the study area was in the low-risk condition as the corresponded RI value < 100. A combined influence of geogenic and anthropogenic factors was identified as the metal sources by multivariate analysis. The study found that the accumulation rate of the metal contents was higher in leaves than that of roots. The mean descending metal concentration values were Zn (107) > Pb (28. 7) > Cu (16.9) > As (11.2) > Cr (4.99) in leaves and Zn (104.32) > Pb (27.02) > Cu (15.29) > As (10.39) > Cr (3.80) in roots. The translocation and bioaccumulation factors of heavy metals suggested that the mangrove plant species, A. ilicifolius can be used for phytoremediation and phytoextraction since the bio-concentration factor and translocation factor > 1. The studied species exhibited the metal tolerance associated with two following strategies, metal exclusion, and metal accumulation. However, excess metal tolerance can impact the surrounding marine environment.

Logging and plantation agriculture are vital to economies and livelihoods in tropical nations, including Papua New Guinea. To meet global demand, hundreds of thousands of ha of diverse natural habitat have been logged, cleared and replaced with monoculture crops. Resulting hydrological changes have increased sediment, nutrient and pesticide runoff, impacting down-stream habitats. Here, case studies from Kimbe Bay (New Britain) and Mullins Harbour (Milne Bay), examine effects on nearshore coral reefs. In both places, logging and oil palm development had destabilized soils and removed or degraded riparian vegetation. Downstream, nearshore reefs had high silt levels, which, coincident with minor coral bleaching and predation by crown-of-thorns starfish, were correlated with high levels of coral mortality and low coral species richness. Sediment and related impacts can be reduced by effective catchment management, such as avoiding steep slopes, expanding stream and coastal buffer zones, minimizing fertilizer and pesticide use, monitoring and reactive management.

This work presents the structural and functional traits of benthic amphipods in the Saudi waters of the Arabian Gulf. Sixty-two species belonging to 37 genera and 17 families were recorded. Sensitive species such as Grandidierella bonnieroides, G. exilis, Gammaropsis atlantica and Caprellidea indet., were mostly dominant. The average values of richness, density and diversity (H′ log₂) were 11 ± 1, 512 ± 232 ind. m-2 and 3.1 ± 0.1 respectively. The density decreased with increased in depth (nearshore (NS) - 784 ± 445 and offshore (OS) - 222 ± 28, p = 0.023), while evenness (NS – 0.93 and OS -0.94) and diversity (NS – 3.10 and OS - 3.18) were unaffected by depth. Interstitial space dwellers (56.76%) and surface deposit feeders (60.16%) were dominant in the nearshore sand substratum. However, domicolous (72.2%) with suspension and surface deposit feeders (71.7%) were more in offshore silt sediments. The combination of depth, pH and TPH (p = 0.249) influenced the distribution of amphipods.

A combination of biotic indices, geo-accumulation (Igₑₒ) index, and a multivariate approach were applied to assess the anthropogenic influence on the benthic community at five stations from 2018 to 2019 in the Swarnamukhi river estuary, Nellore, India. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis indicated that the Buckingham canal (BC) station showed azoic conditions and formed a separate cluster. Strong positive factor loadings of Cd (0.96), Al (0.93), Zn (0.91), Fe (0.90), Co (0.89), Cu (0.89), Ni (0.87), Pb (0.85), Cr (0.77), organic matter (0.94), Silt (0.92), and clay (0.93) and negative loading of sand (−0.90) showed the variability in sediment. AMBI results illustrated the disturbance status of each station and classified BC station as ‘extremely disturbed’ class, and M-AMBI assessed the ecological status as ‘bad’. The Igₑₒ index also revealed metal (Cd) contamination. The present study illustrated that the combined approach is effective for ecological assessment of coastal ecosystem.

Expansion of agricultural and urban areas and intensification of catchment land-use increasingly affect different facets of biodiversity in aquatic communities. However, understanding the responses of taxonomic and functional diversity to specific conversion from natural forest to agriculture and urban land-use remains limited, especially in subtropical streams where biomonitoring programs and using functional traits are still under development. Here, we conducted research in a subtropical stream network to examine the responses of macroinvertebrate taxonomic and functional diversity to different types of land-use in central China. Our results showed that medium body size, univoltine, gill respiration, and slow seasonal development were much higher in natural forest sites, while certain traits related to strong resilience and resistance (e.g., small body size, fast seasonal development, bi-or multivoltine, abundant occurrence in drift, sprawler) dominated in high-intensity agriculture and urbanization sites. We further found that land-use compromised water quality (e.g., increases in total phosphate, conductivity and water temperature) and habitat conditions (e.g., high proportion of sand and silt, gravel, and channel width) accounted for the changes in trait composition based on a combination of RLQ and fourth-corner analysis. Moreover, natural forest sites presented relatively high values of functional richness than other land-use, demonstrating the importance of natural forest maintenance to promote high levels of functional diversity. However, taxonomic diversity indexes showed higher sensitivity to distinguish different types of land-use compared to functional diversity measures. Even so, given that certain trait categories showed significant relationships with specific local environmental stressors, trait-based approaches can provide reliable evidence to diagnose the cause of impairment and complement the results of the taxonomic-based approaches. Our findings support the idea that taxonomic and functional approaches should be integrated in river restoration and land-use management.

In most European countries, each adult citizen drinks on average more than 20 L of wine every year. Three popular wine-growing areas (Aleksandrovac, Topola, and Orahovac) in Serbia were studied in order to investigate the abundance and uptake of elements from vineyard soil to plants. The specific activities of radionuclides (²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, ¹³⁷Cs, and ⁷Be) were measured in soil, leaves, and grape berries. ²²⁶Ra and ²³²Th were positively correlated with silt and clay and negatively correlated with sand content in soil. Specific activities of natural radionuclides were also negatively correlated with soil pH and CaCO₃. Significant correlations of ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs with organic matter in soil were found. Concentrations of fifteen metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, K, Na, Ca, Mg, and Hg) were also measured in soil samples as well as in grapevine leaves. Analyzed soils were rich in Ni, Cu, Co, Cr, and Cd. High concentrations of Cu were probably caused by long-term use of Cu-based fungicides. Cu was correlated with Fe and organic matter content in soil. Soil-to-plant transfer factors (TF) were calculated to estimate the uptake of radionuclides and metals. Correlations obtained via PCA enable distinction between the sites Aleksandrovac and Topola relative to Orahovac. The first principal component (PC1) accounting for 30.70% of the total variance correlated significantly with soil pH (H₂O), contents of CaCO₃, Na, Ca, ⁴⁰K, and ²²⁶Ra in soil, as well as with ²²⁶Ra, Na, Ca in plants and TFCₐ. The second principal component (PC2), with total variance of 17.21%, was mainly correlated with variables pertaining to Mg, Co, and Cr in the soil and TFK.
