In Mirzapur (U.P.), a power-starved district, the UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) technique was adopted. Almost all of the available technologies do not treat heavy metals, so, is the case with the UASB also. The present study is to assess how much heavy metal can get accumulated in plant tissues in different species. The result of the present study was that the concentration of Pb(1106.31)>Zn(221.45)>Cd(49.26)>Hg(23.37) mg/Kg in the sludge while the concentration of Zn(93.35)>Pb(52.00)>Hg(16.93)>Cd(1.53) mg/Kg in the soil. When the sludge was mixed with the soil the trend got changed and the trend was Pb(596.36)>Zn(219.86)>Cd(24.70)>Hg(22.63) mg/Kg. Three different species that were chosen for the study were Basella Alba (Spinach), Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) & Brassica Juncea (Mustard). The trend of accumulation of studied heavy metals in the Brassica Juncea (Mustard) was Zn(85.33)>Pb(25.88)>Hg(11.23)>Cd(0.99) mg/Kg. In Solanum lycopersicum (Tomato) the trend was Pb(231.11)>Zn(108.72)>Hg(12.43)>Cd(9.41) mg/Kg  and in Basella alba (Spinach) was Zn(103.81)>Pb(83.90)>Hg(10.78)>Cd(4.18) mg/Kg. Overall the study reveals that the accumulation of heavy metals takes place in plants grown in soil mixed with sewage sludge. The reduction in the concentration of Pb, Cd, Hg and Zn in sludge mixed with soil after the harvesting of plant in case of Solanum lycopersicum were 39.38%, 47.93%, 6.18% and 49.89% respectively; while in case of Basella alba these were 25.23%, 57.53%, 71.58% and 49.16% respectively; and in case of Brassica Juncea these reduction were 25.86%, 60.80%, 70.96% and 49.04% respectively.

The effects of voltage intensity on the nutrient removal performance and microbial community in the iron electrolysis-integrated aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system were investigated over a period of 15 weeks. Results revealed that the application outcomes of iron electrolysis for AGS systems relied on voltage intensity. When a constant voltage of 1.5 V was applied, the sludge granulation was most obviously accelerated with a specific growth rate of the sludge diameter of 0.078 day⁻¹, and the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) increased by 14.1% and 20.2%, respectively, compared to the control reactor (without the iron electrolysis-integration). Moreover, the AGS developed at different voltages included different microbial communities, whose shifts were driven by the Fe content and the average diameter of AGS. Both heterotrophic nitrifiers and mixotrophic denitrifiers were significantly enriched in the AGS developed at 1.5 V, which effectively enhanced TN removal. Together with the response of the functional genes involved in Fe, N, and P metabolism, the electrolytic iron-driven nutrient degradation pathway was further elaborated. Overall, this study clarified the optimum voltage condition when iron electrolysis was integrated into the AGS system, and revealed the enhancement mechanism of this coupling technology on nutrient removal during the treatment of low-strength municipal wastewater.

Soil contaminated with toxic heavy metals (THMs) was stabilized by adding a combination of waste resources in 7.0 wt%, including coal-mine drainage sludge, waste cow bone, and steelmaking slag, in the ratio of 5:35:60. Subsequently, corn and peanut were cultivated in treated soil to investigate the effects of the waste resources on THM mobility in soil and translocation to plants. Sequential extraction procedures (SEP) was used to analyze mobile phase THMs which could be accumulated in the plants. SEP shows that mobile Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, and As were reduced by 8.48%, 29.22%, 18.85%, 21.66%, 4.58%, 62.78%, and 20.01%, respectively. The bioaccumulation of THMs was clearly hindered by stabilization; however, the increment in the amount of immobile-phase THMs and change in the amount of translocated THMs was not proportional. The corn grains grown above the soil surface were compared with the peanut grains grown beneath the soil surface, and the results indicating that the efficiency of stabilization on THM translocation may not depend on the contact of grain to soil but the nature of plant. Interestingly, the results of bioaccumulation with and without stabilization showed that the movement of some THMs inside the plants was affected by stabilization.

Among emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), triclosan (TCS) is an antibacterial agent and frequently detected in sludge. In this study, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to obtain the first transcriptomic profile of tobacco with TCS treatment in comparison with control. The results of transcriptome profiling indicated that salicylic acid (SA) signalling pathway actively participated in the tobacco’s response to TCS treatment. The accumulation of endogenous SA in transgene tobacco lines transformed with a homologous gene of SA binding protein (LcSABP) was significantly enhanced. The resistance of transgenic tobacco lines to TCS was markedly enhanced revealed by morphological and physiological indexes while the total Chl level and Pₙ of transgenic individuals showed about 180% and 250% higher than that of WT on average, and the accumulation of H₂O₂ and O₂⁻ induced by TCS in SABP overexpressing tobacco was 35.3%–37.3% and 53.0%–56.0% lower than that of WT. In order to further explore the mechanism of TCS tolerance in transgenic plants, RNA-seq was then performed to obtain the second transcriptomic profile between wild type and transgenic samples with TCS exposure. The results indicated that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were most highly enriched in MAPK signalling pathway, amino acid synthesis pathway and plant hormone transduction pathway. Especially, genes encoding key proteins such as cytochrome P450, laccase, peroxidase, glycosyl transferase, glutathione S-transferase and ATP-binding cassette were considered to be related to the increased tolerance ability of transgenic tobacco to the treatment of TCS stress. This research will likely provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of SA-mediated amelioration of TCS stress on tobacco.

The effectiveness of biochar as a sorptive material to remove contaminants, particularly heavy metals, from water is dependent on biomass type and pyrolysis condition. Biochars were produced from pulp mill sludge (PMS) and rice straw (RS) with nitrogen (N₂) or carbon dioxide (CO₂) as the purging gas. The sorptive capacity of the biochars for cadmium(II), copper(II), nickel(II) and lead(II) was studied. The heavy metal adsorption capacity was mainly affected by biomass type, with biochars adsorption capacities higher for lead(II) (109.9–256.4 mg g⁻¹) than for nickel(II) (40.2–64.1 mg g⁻¹), cadmium(II) (29.5–42.7 mg g⁻¹) and copper(II) (18.5–39.4 mg g⁻¹) based on the Langmuir adsorption model. The highest lead(II) adsorption capacities for PMS and RS biochars were 256.4 and 133.3 mg g⁻¹, respectively, when generated using N₂ as the purging gas. The corresponding lead(II) adsorption capacities were 250.0 and 109.9 mg g⁻¹, respectively, when generated using CO₂ as the purging gas. According to the intraparticle diffusion model, 30–62% of heavy metal adsorption was achieved in 1 h; film diffusion was the rate-dominating step, whereas pore diffusion was a rate-limiting step. Ion exchange and complexation between heavy metals and biochar surface functional groups such as carbonyl and hydroxyl groups were effective mechanisms for heavy metal sorption from the aqueous solution. We conclude that proper selection of both the feedstock type and the purging gas is important in designing biochars for the effective removal of potentially toxic metals from wastewater.

Sludge landscaping after compost stabilization is a popular recycling process; however, until trace elements (TEs) are extracted by plants and reduced to safe concentrations, they present a potential exposure risk. Three garden plants, Liriope platyphylla Wang et Tang (L. platyphylla), Iris tectorum Maxim (I. tectorum), and Photinia x fraseri Dress (P. x fraseri), were selected for field experiments, and their ability to phytoremediate TEs and the promotion effect of citric acid (CA) were studied over 3 months of observation. Among the three kinds of plants, L. platyphylla had the highest biomass per unit soil area, and the CA treatment further increased the biomass of this plant per unit soil area as well as the uptake of TEs. When treated with 3 mmol kg⁻¹ CA, L. platyphylla showed increases in the bioconcentration factors of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd by 24%, 63%, 27%, and 123%, respectively. Because of the large biomass and high concentrations of TEs, L. platyphylla had high phytoremediation indexes for Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Cd, which reached 18.5, 3.7, 3.2, 2.2, and 0.4 mg m⁻², respectively, and were further improved by 60%–187% by the CA treatment. These advantages indicate the potential usefulness of L. platyphylla for phytoremediation. The results provide basic data and technical support for the use of sludge-based compost and phytoremediation by garden plants.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) decay by electro-Fenton (EF) oxidation using a novel FeS₂/carbon felt (CF) cathode, instead of a soluble iron salt, was studied with the aim to accelerate the reaction between H₂O₂ and ferrous ions, which helps to produce more hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and eliminate iron sludge. First, fabricated FeS₂ and its derived cathode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Anodes were then screened, with DSA (Ti/IrO₂–RuO₂) showing the best performance under EF oxidation regarding CBZ degradation and electrochemical characterization. Several operating parameters of this EF process, such as FeS₂ loading, current density, gap between electrodes (GBE), initial [CBZ], and electrolyte type, were also investigated. Accordingly, a nonconsecutive empirical kinetic model was established to predict changes in CBZ concentration under the given operational parameters. The contribution of different oxidation types to the EF process was calculated using kinetic analysis and quenching experiments to verify the role of the FeS₂-modified cathode. The reaction contributions of anodic oxidation (AO), H₂O₂ electrolysis (EP), and EF oxidation to CBZ removal were 12.81%, 7.41%, and 79.77%, respectively. The •OH exposure of EP and EF oxidation was calculated, confirming that •OH exposure was approximately 22.45-fold higher using FeS₂-modified CF. Finally, the 19 intermediates formed by CBZ degradation were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Accordingly, four CBZ degradation pathways were proposed. ECOSAR software was used to assess the ecotoxicity of intermediates toward fish, daphnia, and green algae, showing that this novel EF oxidation process showed good toxicity reduction performance. A prolonged EF retention time was proposed to be necessary to obtain clean and safe water, even if the targeted compound was removed at an earlier time.

Hooghly River (HR), the other name used for the lower stretch of River Ganga, is a prime freshwater source in the eastern part of India. However HR has been evidenced with a variety of emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) in the recent past. Given the extensive use of plasticizers and additive in plastic products, we have investigated seven plasticizers and bisphenol A (BPA) in the surface and storm-water of HR up to the tip of the Bay of Bengal. Further using a previously published sediment data we have estimated the fluxes for the aforementioned EOPs. Surface water and storm-water concentrations of seven plasticizers varied between 92.62 and 770 ng/L (176.1 ± 104.8; Avg ± SD) and 120.9–781.5 ng/L (355.2 ± 232.5), respectively. BPA varied between 43 and 8800 ng/L (658.3 ng/L ± 1760) and 117.9–2147 ng/L (459.3 ± 620.2) in surface and storm-water, respectively. With the increase in salinity, a decreasing trend for bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was evidenced. However, concentration of BPA increased with the increase in salinity. Significant and strong correlation between DEHP and BPA (R² = 0.6; p < 0.01) in the suburban corridor might have resulted from sludge disposal of the scrap recycling activities. Using site-specific principal component analysis, unregulated disposal of plastic waste, particularly from such industrial belts and tourist spots were identified as the possible point sources for plasticizers and BPA in this region. Net diffusive flux based on fugacity fraction showed a trend depending on the pollutant’s aqueous solubility and partition coefficient. However, transfer tendency from water to sediment was noticed in the sites having point source. Estimated ecotoxicological risk posed by BPA was higher for edible fishes and for lower order organisms, PAEs was the major contributor.

Microplastic (MP) has been detected ubiquitously in freshwater systems. Until now MP sampling, however, is predominantly based on short-term net or pumping and filtration systems which can only provide snapshots of MP abundance; especially in flowing water bodies. To improve representativeness in the determination of MP occurrences in these aquatic compartments, an integrative approach that covers larger water volumes for a longer period of time is required. In this regard, surface water supplied drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) represent an opportunity. In DWTPs, suspended solids from thousands of cubic metres of raw water are continuously removed over several hours and enriched in coagulation/flocculation and filtration processes. Our hypothesis was that MP is also removed to a full extent, like suspended solids, and that an integrative approach for identification and quantification in raw water can be derived from the analysis of MP in the treatment sludge. To prove this hypothesis, treatment sludge from a riverside DWTP (Warnow river, North-Eastern Germany) was analysed for MP > 50 μm. A sample purification protocol overcoming potential matrix effects caused by coagulants and flocculants was developed and validated. MP was analysed using micro-Raman spectroscopy. MP occurrence determined for the Warnow river was compared with in situ reference sampling using an established pumping and filtration system at relatively stable flow conditions. As result, the number of MP particles derived from treatment sludge was extrapolated to 196 ± 42 m⁻³ for the Warnow river and is statistically insignificantly different from 233 ± 36 m⁻³ identified by conventional water sampling. In addition, the polymer distribution and particles shape indicated the validity of the integrative concept. Consequently, the determination of MP abundance for freshwater systems based on DWTP treatment sludge represents an adequate method to estimate MP concentrations in flowing waters in an integrative way.

Anaerobic digestion is an attractive waste treatment technology, achieving both pollution control and energy recovery. Though the inhibition of polystyrene nanoplastics in anaerobic granular sludge is well studied, no direct evidence has been found on the interaction of methanogens and nanoplastics. In this study, to characterize the location of nanoplastics, Pd-doped polystyrene nanoplastics (Pd-PS) were used to explore the inhibition mechanism of anaerobic sludge through short-term exposure to Methanosarcina acetivorans C2A. The results showed that Pd-PS inhibited the methanogenesis of the anaerobic sludge, and the methane production decreased as the Pd-PS increased, with a 14.29% reduction at the Pd-PS concentration of 2.36 × 10¹⁰ particles/mL. Also, Pd-PS interacted with the protein in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Furthermore, Pd-PS inhibited the methanogenesis of M. acetivorans C2A without exhibiting an evident reduction in the growth. The inhibition of Pd-PS on methane was due to the inhibition of methane production related genes, MtaA and mcrA. These results provide potential explication for the inhibition of nanoplastics on the methanogens, which will fulfill the knowledge on the stability of methanogens under the short-term exposure of nanoplastics.
