This study aims at assessing the health-related risk of As, Co, Cr, Ni, and Cu in the soil around Angouran Mineral Processing Complex (AMPC), due to environmentally sensitive nature of the area, having agricultural activities, habitats of animal and plant species, and industrial activities integrated with each other. Soil samples have been collected from 74 points (0-20 cm) of the area and concentrations of heavy metals have been measured, using ICP-OES. The Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), and Integrated Pollution Index (IPI) have been used to examine the pollution level. Moreover, hazard indices (HI), hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk (CR) have been utilized to assess the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks of heavy metals. The average concentration of heavy metals indicates that metals’ concentration in the soil have increased in the following order: Cr = Ni> As> Cu> Co. Results from Igeo, Ef, and IPI show that As and Ni are placed in the very high pollution category. The non-carcinogenic risk of dermal absorption (adults = 1.30 E + 00, children = 1.35 E + 00) of Cr and Co polluted particles turn out to be very high. In addition, the risk of cancer as a result of the ingestion of As- and Cr-contaminated soil particles is high in both of age groups, with children being 68% more likely to be at risk of cancer than adults. Therefore, actions such as soil remediation should be done to reduce the risk of exposure and protect the health of the residents, especially the farmers.

International audience | The use of reclaimed water in agriculture represents a promising alternative to relieve pressure on freshwater supplies, especially in arid or semiarid regions facing water scarcity. However, this implies introducing micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues into the environment. The fate and the ecotoxicological impact of valsartan, an antihypertensive drug frequently detected in wastewater effluents, were evaluated in soil-earthworm microcosms. Valsartan dissipation in the soil was concomitant with valsartan acid formation. Although both valsartan and valsartan acid accumulated in earthworms, no effect was observed on biomarkers of exposure (acetylcholinesterase, glutathione S-transferase and carboxylesterase activities). The geometric mean index of soil enzyme activity increased in the soils containing earthworms, regardless of the presence of valsartan. Therefore, earthworms increased soil carboxylesterase, dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, urease and protease activities. Although bacterial richness significantly decreased following valsartan exposure, this trend was enhanced in the presence of earthworms with a significant impact on both alpha and beta microbial diversity. The operational taxonomic units involved in these changes were related to four (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes) of the eight most abundant phyla. Their relative abundances significantly increased in the valsartan-treated soils containing earthworms, suggesting the presence of potential valsartan degraders. The ecotoxicological effect of valsartan on microbes was strongly altered in the earthworm-added soils, hence the importance of considering synergistic effects of different soil organisms in the environmental risk assessment of pharmaceutical active compounds. Despite the wide applications of end member mixing analysis (EMMA) for assigning the sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environment, there was no study attempting to test the applicability of EMMA for predicting environmental reactivity of DOM. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of EMMA, or the concept of ideal mixing behavior of end members, for describing several well-known DOM reactivities using two DOM end member sources (i.e., soil and algae) at varying mixing ratios. The selected DOM reactivities were trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), mineral adsorption amount, pyrene binding, membrane resistance, and biodegradation potential. Among the tested DOM functions, all were found to follow the ideal mixing behavior, presenting the linear relationships between the source mixing ratios and the tested reactivity with the R² value of >0.80. The ideal mixing behavior of the DOM functions was more pronounced than that based on several spectroscopic indicators derived from UV absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. This study provided insight into potential applicability and limitation of EMMA approach in monitoring and predicting environmental functions of DOM in aquatic systems where identified DOM sources are mixed and vary dynamically with the mixing ratios.

It is widely recognized that green infrastructures in urban ecosystems provides important ecosystem services, including air purification. The potential absorption of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) by urban trees has not been fully quantified, although it is important for air pollution mitigation and the well-being of urban residents. In this study, four common tree species (Sophora japonica L., Fraxinus chinensis Roxb., Populus tomentosa Carrière, Sabina chinensis (L.)) in Beijing, China, were studied. The dual stable isotopes (¹⁵N and ¹⁸O) and a Bayesian isotope mixing model were applied to estimate the sources contributions of potential nitrogen sources to the roadside trees based on leaf and soil sampling in urban regions. The following order of sources contributions was determined: soil > dry deposition > traffic-related NOₓ. The capacity of urban trees for NOₓ removal in the city was estimated using a remote sensing and GIS approach, and the removal capacity was found to range from 0.79 to 1.11 g m⁻² a⁻¹ across administrative regions, indicating that 1304 tons of NOₓ could be potentially removed by urban trees in 2019. Our finding qualified the potential NOₓ removal by urban trees in terms of atmospheric pollution mitigation, highlighting the role of green infrastructure in air purification, which should be taken into account by stakeholders to manage green infrastructure as the basis of a nature-based approach.

Plastic pollution is emerging as a potential threat to the marine environment. In the current study, we selected seagrass meadows, known to efficiently trap organic and inorganic particles, to investigate the concentrations and dynamics of microplastics in their soil. We assessed microplastic contamination and accumulation in ²¹⁰Pb dated soil cores collected in Posidonia oceanica meadows at three locations along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, with two sites located in the Almería region (Agua Amarga and Roquetas) and one at Cabrera Island (Santa Maria). Almería is known for its intense agricultural industry with 30 000 ha of plastic-covered greenhouses, while the Cabrera Island is situated far from urban areas. Microplastics were extracted using enzymatic digestion and density separation. The particles were characterized by visual identification and with Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and related to soil age-depth chronologies. Our findings showed that the microplastic contamination and accumulation was negligible until the mid-1970s, after which plastic particles increased dramatically, with the highest concentrations of microplastic particles (MPP) found in the recent (since 2012) surface soil of Agua Amarga (3819 MPP kg⁻¹), followed by the top-most layers of the soil of the meadows in Roquetas (2173 kg⁻¹) and Santa Maria (68–362 kg⁻¹). The highest accumulation rate was seen in the Roquetas site (8832 MPP m⁻² yr⁻¹). The increase in microplastics in the seagrass soil was associated to land-use change following the intensification of the agricultural industry in the area, with a clear relationship between the development of the greenhouse industry in Almería and the concentration of microplastics in the historical soil record. This study shows a direct linkage between intense anthropogenic activity, an extensive use of plastics and high plastic contamination in coastal marine ecosystems such as seagrass meadows. We highlight the need of proper waste management to protect the coastal environment from continuous pollution.

The development of urbanised areas together with the growing transport infrastructure and traffic volume are the main cause of air quality deterioration due to the increasing concentrations of particulate matter. Dust pollution is a threat to human health. It can cause the development of lung, larynx or circulatory system cancer. Due to the ability to accumulate dust particles on the leaf surface, the contribution of trees in the process of phytoremediation of air pollution has started to be appreciated. An analysis of the elemental composition of particulate matter (PM) stored on the leaves surface was also carried out, which showed high average concentration of: C > O > Si > Fe (above 8wt.%). It was also observed single particles with a high concentration of heavy metals: Ti, Mn, Ba, Zn, Cr, Pb, Sn, Ni and REE (rare earth elements). The major origin of PM are vehicular emissions, soil and re-suspended road dust. This paper presents also a comparison of selected tree, shrub and vine species differing in their ability to accumulate particulate matter. It was experimentally determined the average leaf surface of individual plant species and established the amount of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter between 10 and 100 μm, 2.5 and 10 μm, and 0.2 and 2.5 μm deposited on the leaf surface and in waxes.Some species of vines (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), shrubs (Forsythia x intermediata) and coniferous trees, such as Betula pendula ‘Youngii’, Quercus rubra, Cratageus monogyna, Acer pseduoplatanus, Tilia cordata Mill. or Platanus orientalis turned out to be the most efficient in the process of phylloremediation.

The vadose zone is the first natural layer preventing groundwater pollution. Understanding virus transport and retention in the vadose zone is necessary. The effects of different interfaces and mechanisms on virus transport and retention were investigated by studying Escherichia coli phage migration in laboratory-scale columns under unsaturated conditions. The E. coli phage was used as a model virus. Colloid filtration theory, extended Derjagin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory and two−site kinetic deposition model were used to calculate fitted parameters and interaction energies to assess virus retention at different interfaces. The collector diameters and the size of E. coli phages in the influent and effluent were compared to assess the effect of straining. The results indicated that the roles of solid–water interfaces (SWIs) and air–water interfaces (AWIs) in retaining E. coli phages are strongly controlled by the moisture content and hydrochemical conditions. Decreasing the moisture content and increasing the ionic strength (IS) of the suspension increased E. coli phage retention. At suspension ISs of 0.01 or 0.03 M and various moisture contents, E. coli phages were mainly retained at the SWIs rather than AWIs. When the IS was increased to 0.06 M, the viruses were strongly retained by becoming attached to both SWIs and AWIs. The role of straining in virus retention could not be ignored. Viruses were retained more at the SWIs and less straining occurred under acidic conditions than under neutral or alkaline conditions. This was mainly because of the effects of the pH and IS on surface charges and the model virus particle size. This study has important implications for modeling and predicting virus transport in soil affected by rainfall, snowmelt, and human activities (e.g., irrigation and artificial groundwater recharging).

Toluene is a highly flammable and commonly used industrial chemical with severe health consequences on humans upon exposure and ingestion. In this study, multispecies bioassays were conducted using a species sensitivity distribution approach to determine acute and chronic hazardous concentrations of toluene in soil. Acute and chronic toluene toxicity tests were conducted with seven soil species from four taxonomic groups. The results from the toxicity tests were used to estimate the acute and chronic HC₅ (hazardous concentration for 5 % of species) of toluene in the terrestrial environment at 58.9 (5.4–639.6) mg kg⁻¹ and 2.2 (0.2–19.8) mg kg⁻¹, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to estimate the hazardous concentration of toluene in soil by conducting a battery of bioassays. These values can be used as references for the environmental risk assessment of chemical accidents involving toluene and estimating its impact on soil to protect the terrestrial environment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil can be recalcitrant to solvent extraction after aging. We showed in this study that mixing a small amount of water in the extracting solvent during microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) can release recalcitrant PAHs, resulting in significant improvement in the analyzed concentrations. The improvement factor (F) for the total of 16 priority PAHs (∑PAH16) listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency was 1.44–1.55 for field soils. By comparing the F values for different soil organic components, we demonstrated that the recalcitrant PAHs were primarily associated with biochar, humic acid (HA), and humin (HM), with the F values for ∑PAH16 of 1.94, 6.62, and 4.59, respectively. The results showed that the recalcitrant PAHs comprised a sequestered fraction and a desorption-limited fraction. NMR spectra showed that water worked alone at elevated temperature to promote hydrolysis of biochar and destroy the macromolecular structure, thus causing the release of the otherwise sequestered PAHs during MAE. The substantial reduction in F values for HA and HM after demineralization indicated sequestration of PAHs in organic-mineral complexes, which can be destroyed by hot water treatment. The release of the sequestered fraction was nonselective and independent of compound hydrophobicity. In comparison, the release of the desorption-limited fraction was positively affected by the hydrophobicity of PAHs and was facilitated by the presence of water in the extracting solvent. The results of this study provide important insights into the sequestration and release of recalcitrant PAHs in soil.
