Due to the unreasonable use and discharge of the aquaculture industry, over standard of the antibiotics has been frequent in different types of water environments, causing adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Lycopene (LYC) is an esculent carotenoid, which is considered to be a strong antioxidant. This study was designed to explore the therapeutic effect of LYC on antibiotic (sulfamethoxazole (SMZ)) induced intestinal injury in grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella. The 120 carps (the control, LYC, SMZ, and co-administration groups) were treated for 30 days. We found that treatment with LYC significantly suppressed SMZ-induced intestinal epithelial cell damage and tight junction protein destruction through histopathological observation, transmission electron microscopy and detection of related genes (Claudin-1/3/4, Occludin and zonula occludens (ZO)-1/2). Furthermore, LYC mitigated SMZ-induced dysregulation of oxidative stress markers, including elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and consumed super oxide dimutese (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities and glutathione (GSH) content. In the same treatment, LYC reduced inflammation and apoptosis by a detectable change in pro-inflammatory factors (tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-β), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-8), anti-inflammatory factors (transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and IL-10) and pro-apoptosis related genes (p53, p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis (PUMA), Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, caspase-3/9). In addition, activation of autophagy (as indicated by increased autophagy-related genes through AMPK/ATK/MTOR signaling pathway) under the stress of SMZ was also dropped back to the original levels by LYC co-administration. Collectively, our findings identified that LYC can serve as a protectant agent against SMZ-induced intestinal injury.

Aquatic pollution from emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) is of key environmental importance in India and globally, particularly due to concerns of antimicrobial resistance, ecotoxicity and drinking water supply vulnerability. Here, using a broad screening approach, we characterize the composition and distribution of EOCs in groundwater in the Gangetic Plain around Patna (Bihar), as an exemplar of a rapidly developing urban area in northern India. A total of 73 EOCs were detected in 51 samples, typically at ng.L⁻¹ to low μg.L⁻¹ concentrations, relating to medical and veterinary, agrochemical, industrial and lifestyle usage. Concentrations were often dominated by the lifestyle chemical and artificial sweetener sucralose. Seventeen identified EOCs are flagged as priority compounds by the European Commission, World Health Organisation and/or World Organisation for Animal Health: namely, herbicides diuron and atrazine; insecticides imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and acetamiprid; the surfactant perfluorooctane sulfonate (and related perfluorobutane sulfonate, perfluorohexane sulfonate, perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluoropentane sulfonate); and medical/veterinary compounds sulfamethoxazole, sulfanilamide, dapson, sulfathiazole, sulfamethazine and diclofenac. The spatial distribution of EOCs varies widely, with concentrations declining with depth, consistent with a strong dominant vertical flow control. Groundwater EOC concentrations in Patna were found to peak within ∼10 km distance from the River Ganges, indicating mainly urban inputs with some local pollution hotspots. A heterogeneous relationship between EOCs and population density likely reflects confounding factors including varying input types and controls (e.g. spatial, temporal), wastewater treatment infrastructure and groundwater abstraction. Strong seasonal agreement in EOC concentrations was observed. Co-existence of limited transformation products with associated parent compounds indicate active microbial degradation processes. This study characterizes key controls on the distribution of groundwater EOCs across the urban to rural transition near Patna, as a rapidly developing Indian city, and contributes to the wider understanding of the vulnerability of shallow groundwater to surface-derived contamination in similar environments.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation have attracted increasing attention in recent years for organic pollutants removal. Herein, we put forward a facile method to form cobalt phosphide/carbon composite for PMS activation. Combining impregnation approach with pyrolysis treatment enabled the formation of Co₂P/biochar composites using baker’s yeast and Co²⁺ as precursors. The as-synthesized products exhibited excellent catalytic activity for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation over the pH range 3.0–9.0 b y activating PMS. For example, 100% of SMX (20 mg L⁻¹) removal was achieved in 20 min with catalyst dosage of 0.4 g L⁻¹ and PMS loading of 0.4 g L⁻¹. Near zero Co²⁺ leaching was observed during catalytic reaction, which remarkably lowered the toxic risk of transition metal ion in water. Meanwhile, the reusability of catalyst could be attained by thermal treatment. SMX degradation intermediates were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), which facilitated the proposal of possible SMX degradation pathways. Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) analysis indicated that SMX degradation intermediates may not pose ecological toxicity to the environment. Further investigation verified that Co₂P/biochar composites could set off PMS activation not only for the degradation of SMX but also for other sulfonamides. In this study, we not only developed a facile method of utilizing environmental-benign biomass for transition metal phosphide/carbon composite formation, but also achieved highly efficient antibiotic elimination by PMS-based AOP.

The negative impact of antibiotic pollution on the agricultural system and human health is a hot issue in the world. However, little information is available on the antibiotics toxicity mechanism and the role of silicon (Si) to alleviate the antibiotics toxicity. In this study, strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) showed excitatory response to low-dose SMZ (1 mg L⁻¹), but strawberry root and photosynthetic efficiency were damaged under high level. When SMZ level exceeded 10 mg L⁻¹, H₂0₂, O₂⁻, MDA and relative conductivity increased, while SOD and CAT activities first increased and then decreased. SMZ accumulated more in roots and fruits, but less in stems, and the accumulation increased with the increase of SMZ-dose. Under 1 mg L⁻¹ SMZ, the SMZ accumulation in fruits was 110.54 μg kg⁻¹, which exceeded the maximum residue limit. SMZ can induce the expression of sul1, sul2 and intI1, and intI1 had the highest abundance. Exogenous application of Si alleviated the toxicity of SMZ, which is mainly related to the degradation of SMZ in soil and the reduction of SMZ absorption by strawberry. In addition, Si relieved root damage, promoted the increase of photosynthetic efficiency, and improved the antioxidant system to resist SMZ toxicity.

Antibiotics can stimulate the growth of model cyanobacterial species under pure culture conditions, but their influence on cyanobacterial blooms in natural aquatic ecosystems remains unclear. In this study, three commonly detected antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin) and their ternary mixture were proved to selectively stimulate (p < 0.05) the growth and photosynthetic activity of cyanobacteria in an aquatic microcosm at an environmentally relevant exposure dose of 300 ng/L under both oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Under the eutrophic condition, cyanobacteria reached a bloom density of 1.61 × 10⁶ cells/mL in 15 days without antibiotics, while the cyanobacteria exposed to tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and their ternary mixture exceeded this bloom density within only 10, 8, 7, and 6 days, respectively. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that the antibiotic contaminants accelerated the prokaryotic community succession towards the formation of a cyanobacterial bloom by promoting the dominance of Microcystis, Synechococcus, and Oscillatoria under the eutrophic condition. After 15 days of culture, the antibiotic exposure increased the density of cyanobacteria by 1.38–2.31-fold and 2.28–3.94-fold under eutrophic and oligotrophic conditions, respectively. Antibiotic exposure generated higher stimulatory effects on cyanobacterial growth under the oligotrophic condition, but the antibiotic(s)-treated cyanobacteria did not form a bloom due to nutrient limitation. Redundancy analysis indicated that the three target antibiotics and their ternary mixture affected the prokaryotic community structure in a similar manner, while tetracycline showed some differences compared to sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and the ternary antibiotic mixture with regard to the regulation of the eukaryotic community structure. This study demonstrates that antibiotic contaminants accelerate the formation of cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lake water and provides insights into the ecological effects of antibiotics on aquatic microbial communities.

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern. Triclosan is an antimicrobial compound with direct links to antibiotic resistance that was widely used in soaps in the U.S. until its ban by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Benzalkonium chloride (BAC), a quaternary ammonium compound, has widely replaced triclosan in soaps marketed as an antibacterial. BAC has been detected in surface waters and its presence will likely increase following increased use in soap products. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of BAC on relative abundance of antibiotic resistance in a bacterial community from a surface water used as a source for drinking water treatment. Bench-scale microcosm experiments were conducted with microbial communities amended with BAC at concentrations ranging from 0.1 μg L⁻¹ to 500 μg L⁻¹. Phenotypic antibiotic resistance was quantified by culturing bacteria in the presence of different antibiotics, and genotypic resistance was determined using qPCR to quantify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). BAC at concentrations ranging from 0.1 μg L⁻¹ to 500 μg L⁻¹ was found to positively select for bacteria resistant to ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, and negatively select against bacteria with resistance to six other antibiotics. Exposure to BAC for 14 days increased the relative abundance of sul1 and blaTEM. This study re-highlights the importance of employing both culture and non-culture-based techniques to identify selection for antibiotic resistance. The widespread use of BAC will likely impact antibiotic resistance profiles of bacteria in the environment, including in source waters used for drinking water, wastewater treatment plants, and natural waterways.

The occurrence of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in the environment is becoming a major area of concern due to their undesirable effects on non-target organisms. This study investigated the occurrence and risk of contamination by five antibiotics and three antiretrovirals drugs in a fast-growing peri-urban area in Kenya, with inadequate sewer system coverage. Due to poor sewage connectivity and poorly designed decentralized systems, wastewater is directly released in open drains. Water and sediment samples were collected from open surface water drains, while wastewater samples were collected from centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Solid-phase extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction for the aqueous and sediment samples respectively were carried out and extracts analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) using isotopically labeled internal standards. APIs were observed with the detection frequency ranging from 36% to 100%. High mean concentrations of 48.7 μg L⁻¹, 108 μg L⁻¹, and 532 μg L⁻¹ were observed in surface drains for Lamivudine (3 TC), Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), Ciprofloxacin (CIP) respectively. Drain sediments also showed high concentrations of APIs ranging from 2.1 to 13,100 μg kg⁻¹. APIs in this study exceeded those observed in existing literature studies. JKUAT WWTP removal efficiencies varied from −90.68% to 72.67%. Total APIs emission load of the study area was 3550 mg d⁻¹ with WWTP effluent contributing higher loads (2620 mg d⁻¹) than surface water drains (640 mg d⁻¹). Zidovudine (ZDV), nevirapine (NVP), and trimethoprim (TMP) loads in drains, however, exceeded WWTP effluent. Low to high ecotoxicity risk of the individual APIs were observed to the aquatic environment, with high risks for the development of antibiotic resistance in microbiome as determined by the risk quotient (RQ) approach. Risk management through efficient wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment is necessary to suppress the measured concentrations.

Release of antibiotics into the environment, which often occurs downstream of wastewater treatment plants, poses a human health threat due to the potential development of bacterial antibiotic resistance. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of ball milled biochar on the removal of two sulfonamide antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfapyridine (SPY) from water and wastewater. Aqueous batch sorption experiment using both pristine and ball milled biochar derived from bagasse (BG), bamboo (BB) and hickory chips (HC), made at three pyrolysis temperatures (300, 450, 600 °C), showed that ball milling greatly enhanced the SMX and SPY adsorption. The 450 °C ball milled HC biochar and BB biochar exhibited the best removal efficiency for SMX (83.3%) and SPY (89.6%), respectively. A range of functional groups were produced by ball milling, leading to the conclusion that the adsorption of sulfonamides on the biochars was controlled by multiple mechanisms including hydrophobic interaction, π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction. Due to the importance of electrostatic interaction, SMX and SPY adsorption was pH dependent. In laboratory water solutions, the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of SMX and SPY reached 100.3 mg/g and 57.9 mg/g, respectively. When tested in real wastewater solution, the 450 °C ball milled biochar still performed well, especially in the removal of SPY. The maximum adsorption capacities of SMX and SPY in wastewater were 25.7 mg/g and 58.6 mg/g, respectively. Thus, ball milled biochar has great potential for SMX and SPY removal from aqueous solutions including wastewater.

Antibiotics, such as sulfonamides (SAs), have recently raised concern as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) partly remove them, and thus, SAs continuously enter the aquifers. In this context, the aims of this work are to (1) investigate the temporal evolution of SAs and metabolites in an urban aquifer recharged by a polluted river; (2) identify the potential geochemical processes that might affect SAs in the river-groundwater interface and (3) evaluate the ecological and human health risk assessment of SAs. To this end, 14 SAs and 4 metabolites were analyzed in river and urban groundwater from the metropolitan area of Barcelona (NE, Spain) in three different sampling campaigns. These substances had a distinct behavior when river water, which is the main recharge source, infiltrates the aquifer. Mixing of the river water recharge into the aquifer drives several redox reactions such as aerobic respiration and denitrification. This reducing character of the aquifer seemed to favor the natural attenuation of some SAs as sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, and sulfamethizole. However, most of the SAs detected were not likely to undergo degradation and adsorption because their concentrations were constant along groundwater flow path. In fact, the intensity of SAs adsorption is low as the retardation factors are close to 1 at average groundwater pH of 7.2 for most SAs.Finally, risk quotients (RQs) are used to evaluate the ecological and human health risks posed by single and mixture of SAs in river water and groundwater, respectively. Life-stage RQs of the SAs detected in groundwater for the 8 age intervals were low, indicating that SAs and their mixture do not pose any risk to human beings. Concerning the environmental risk assessment, SAs do not pose any risk for algae, fish and crustaceans as the RQs evaluated are further lower than 0.1.

Negative effects of environmental antibiotics on non-target organisms were observed in studies at various levels of the biological organization. Yet, studies combining the effects at multiple levels were required to interpret their ecological frequencies in a broader context. Currently, effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was studied on the amphipod Hyalella azteca which is important in ecological stability. At the biochemical level, effects on the antioxidant capacities showed stimulation with an inverse U-shaped change over the concentrations. The stimulation was greater in male than in females. Effects on the oxidative stress showed a U-shaped change which included stimulation and inhibition in males, and solely stimulation in females. The stimulation was less in males than in females. Effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities in both sexes were well correlated with those on oxidative stress (p < 0.05). At the individual level, effects on the body weight showed an inverse U-shaped change over concentrations, and the stimulation was greater in males than in females. The stimulations were significantly correlated with the male oxidative stress (p < 0.01), and male (p < 0.1) and female AChE activities (p < 0.05). Effects of SMX on the pre-copulation behavior also showed an inverse U-shaped change which correlated with male and female antioxidant capacities (p < 0.05) and the male body weight (p < 0.05). At the population level, effects on the reproduction showed an inverse U-shaped change over concentrations, and they significantly correlated with the male body weight (p < 0.05) and the pre-copulation behavior (p < 0.05). Summing up, SMX provoked simultaneous disturbances on the amphipod at multiple levels with sex-dependent responses.
