The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential associations between air pollution and dry eye disease (DED). Data of outdoor air pollutants and meteorology as well as outpatient visits for DED were collected. A time-stratified case-crossover approach was used to analyze the associations between ambient air pollutants and outpatient visits for DED. Among the 5062 DED patients studied, 65.45% were female and 34.55% were male. In the single-pollutant model, significant associations were observed between an increase of 10 μg/m³ in the concentrations of fine-particulate matter with a median aerometric diameter of less than 10 μm (PM₁₀), fine-particulate matter with a median aerometric diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) and outpatient visits for DED. These results were consistent with those of the multipollutant model. The strongest associations between air pollutants and patient visits were observed during the cold season and in patients aged 21–40. The significant association between air pollutants (PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, SO₂, NO₂, and CO) and DED outpatient visits indicates the importance of increased environmental protection.

Fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) pollution in Eastern China (EC) has raised concerns due to its adverse effects on air quality, climate, and human health. This study investigated the long-term variation trend in satellite-derived PM₂.₅ concentrations and how it was related to pollutant emissions and meteorological parameters over EC and seven regions of interest (ROIs) during 1998–2016. Over EC, the annual mean PM₂.₅ increased before 2006 due to the enhanced emissions of primary PM₂.₅, NOₓ and SO₂, but decreased with the reduced SO₂ emissions after 2006 evidently in response to China's clean air policies. In addition, results from statistical analyses indicated that in the North China Plain (NCP), Northeast China (NEC), Sichuan Basin (SCB) and Central China (CC) planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) was the dominant meteorological driver for the PM₂.₅ decadal changes, and in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) wind speed is the leading factor. Overall, the variation in meteorological parameters accounted for 48% of the variances in PM₂.₅ concentrations over EC. The population-weighted PM₂.₅ over EC increased from 36.4 μg/m³ in 1998–2004 (P1) to 49.4 μg/m³ in 2005–2010 (P2) then decreased to 46.5 μg/m³ in 2011–2016 (P3). In the NCP and NEC, the percentages of the population living above the World Health Organization (WHO) Interim Target-1 (IT-1, 35 μg/m³) have risen steadily over the past 20 yr, reaching maxima of 97.3% and 78.8% in P3, respectively, but decreases of ∼30% from P2 to P3 were found for the SCB and PRD.

Aerosol particulate matter with dynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) is the main cause for haze pollution in China. As a dominant precursor of PM₂.₅, SO₂ emitted from industrial process is now strictly controlled by using limestone/gypsum Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (WFGD) system in China. However, a phenomenon that fine particle derived from WFGD is recently addressed, and is suggested to be a potential source of primary PM₂.₅. Herein, a first investigation into the particle generation mechanism in WFGD system is conducted with a novel droplet (containing particles) drying and breakage model. The proposed model considers a random and porous crust instead of the previous regular crust assumption, and is verified by comparing the modeling results with measurements. An orthogonal test with four factors and three levels is carried out through modeling calculation, and flue gas temperature (Tg) in the inlet is found to be a governing parameter for PM₂.₅ yields in WFGD. With Tg in range of 120–160 °C, PM₂.₅ yields in desulfurizing tower can reach a maximum value at ∼2 × 10⁸ cm⁻³ under typical WFGD condition. To avoid this situation and reduce the PM₂.₅ generation, Tg is suggested to be lower than 120 °C. Additionally, a new insight of the elimination effect of gas-gas heater (GGH) on “gypsum rain” in WFGD system is provided.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a new class of environmental risk substances that can stably exist in atmospheric particles and pose a potential threat to human health. In this study, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was used to study the concentration levels, species characteristics, and sources of EPFRs in PM₂.₅ in Xi'an in 2017. The results showed that the concentrations of EPFRs in PM₂.₅ in Xi'an in 2017 ranged from 9.8 × 10¹¹ to 6.9 × 10¹⁴ spins/m³. The highest concentration of EPFRs occurred in winter when the average concentration was 2.1 × 10¹⁴ spins/m³. The lowest concentration of EPFRs occurred in autumn when the average concentration was 7.0 × 10¹³ spins/m³. According to the annual average atmospheric concentration of EPFRs, the amount of EPFRs inhaled by people in Xi'an is equivalent to approximately 5 cigarettes per person per day and approximately 23 cigarettes per person per day in winter when haze occurs. The results of the study on the EPFR characteristics show that the EPFRs in PM₂.₅ in Xi'an are mainly C-center organic radicals that are primarily non-decaying types, accounting for approximately 75% and 85% of total concentration of EPFRs in autumn and winter, respectively. Finally, a correlation analysis was used to explore the origins of EPFRs in PM₂.₅. Significant positive correlations were found between EPFRs and SO₂, NO₂ and the thermally derived OC3 and OC4 carbonaceous components. The results suggested that coal-fired and traffic may be important sources of EPFRs in PM₂.₅ in Xi'an. In addition, EPFRs are significantly positively correlated with O₃ in summer, suggesting that some EPFRs may also originate from secondary processes. This study provides important basic data and evidence for further assessments of the potential health risks of EPFRs in PM₂.₅ and the development of effective air pollution control measures.

Previous studies have suggested a change of birth weight linked with elevated ambient air pollutant concentrations during the pregnancy. However, investigations of the influence of higher pollutant levels on birth weight change are limited. The goal of this study is to evaluate whether the air pollution of Ningbo is associated with birth weight, and which trimester could be a window period for maternal exposure to air pollution. A total of 170,008 live births were selected in the Ningbo city of Zhejiang, China, from 2015 to 2017. We estimated the association between the decreased birth weight and the increased air pollutant concentrations in the three trimesters and full gestation. The effects of interaction among pollutants were identified using a co-pollutant adjustment model. An interquartile range increases in PM2.5 (10.55 μg/m3), SO2(4.6 μg/m3), CO (125.59 μg/m3), and O3 (14.54 μg/m3) concentrations during the entire gestation were associated with 3.65 g (95% confidence interval: −6.02 g, −1.29 g), 5.02 g (−6.89 g, −3.14 g), 2.64 g (−4.65 g, −0.63 g) and 2.9 g (−4.8 g, 1 g) decreases, respectively, in birth weight. With each interquartile range increment in NO2 concentration was associated with an 8.05 g (6.24 g, 9.85 g) increase in birth weight. In the first trimester, only the PM2.5 exposure seemed to be associated with the greatest decline in birth weight. After adjustment for co-pollutant, both PM2.5 and SO2 were still associated with birth weight, except for CO for O3 adjustment, O3 for SO2 adjustment, and O3 for NO2 adjustment. Maternal exposure to air pollution may be associated with a decrease of birth weight, but the contribution of various pollutants is necessary to verify by future research.

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from flue gas lead to a series of environmental problems. Biological removal of Nitrogen oxide (NOx) from flue gas by microalgae is a potential approach for reducing the problems caused by these emissions. However, few microalgal strains are reported to remove NOx from flue gas. Here, a microalga strain PF3 (identified as Scenedesmus obliquus), which can remove NOx and fix CO₂ from flue gas is isolated. The tolerance of Scenedesmus obliquus PF3 to CO₂, NO, SO₂ and its adaptabilities to environmental factors (pH and temperature), and its performance in the removal of NO and CO₂ are investigated. Scenedesmus obliquus PF3 showed biomass accumulation when sparged with 15% CO₂ or 500 ppm NO or 50 ppm SO₂, and bisulfite less than 2 mM showed no toxicity to Scenedesmus obliquus PF3. Additionally, PF3 grew well in a wide range of pH and temperatures from 4.5 to 10.5 and 15 °C–30 °C, respectively. When sparged with simulated flue gas (100 ppm NO, 10% CO₂, (N₂ as balance gas)), the microalgae culture system removed NO and CO₂ at a rate of 2.86 ± 0.23 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹ and 1.48 ± 0.12 g L⁻¹ d⁻¹, respectively, where up to 96.9 ± 0.03% (2.77 ± 0.08 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹) and 87.7 ± 6.22% (1.29 ± 0.01 mg L⁻¹ d⁻¹) of the removed NO and CO₂, respectively, were assimilated in algal biomass. These results suggest that Scenedesmus obliquus PF3 is a promising candidate for NOx removal and carbon fixation of flue gas.

Global urbanisation has resulted in population densification, which is associated with increased air pollution, mainly from anthropogenic sources. One of the systems proposed to mitigate urban air pollution is urban forestry. This study quantified the spatial associations between concentrations of CO, NO₂, SO₂, and PM₁₀ and urban forestry, whilst correcting for anthropogenic sources and sinks, thus explicitly testing the hypothesis that urban forestry is spatially associated with reduced air pollution on a city scale. A Land Use Regression (LUR) model was constructed by combining air pollutant concentrations with environmental variables, such as land cover type and use, to develop predictive models for air pollutant concentrations. Traffic density and industrial air pollutant emissions were added to the model as covariables to permit testing of the main effects after correcting for these air pollutant sources. It was found that the concentrations of all air pollutants were negatively correlated with tree canopy cover and positively correlated with dwelling density, population density and traffic count. The LUR models enabled the establishment of a statistically significant spatial relationship between urban forestry and air pollution mitigation. These findings further demonstrate the spatial relationships between urban forestry and reduced air pollution on a city-wide scale, and could be of value in developing planning policies focused on urban greening.

In this study, a proposed integrated high-gravity technology for air pollution control, CO2 capture, and alkaline waste utilization was comprehensively evaluated from engineering, environmental, and economic perspectives. After high-gravity technology and coal fly ash (CFA) leaching processes were integrated, flue gas air emissions removal (e.g., sulfate dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), total suspended particulates (TSP)) and CO2 capture were studied. The CFA, which contains calcium oxide and thus, had high alkalinity, was used as an absorbent in removing air pollution residues. To elucidate the availability of technology for pilot-scale high-gravity processes, the engineering performance, environmental impact, and economic cost were simultaneously investigated. The results indicated that the maximal CO2, SO2, NOx, and TSP removal efficiencies of 96.3 ± 2.1%, 99.4 ± 0.3%, 95.9 ± 2.1%, and 83.4 ± 2.6% were respectively achieved. Moreover, a 112 kWh/t-CO2 energy consumption for a high-gravity process was evaluated, with capture capacities of 510 kg CO2 and 0.468 kg NOx per day. In addition, the fresh, water-treated, acid-treated, and carbonated CFA was utilized as supplementary cementitious materials in the blended cement mortar. The workability, durability, and compressive strength of 5% carbonated CFA blended into cement mortar showed superior performance, i.e., 53 MPa ±2.5 MPa at 56 days. Furthermore, a higher engineering performance with a lower environmental impact and lower economic cost could potentially be evaluated to determine the best available operating condition of the high-gravity process for air pollution reduction, CO2 capture, and waste utilization.

As the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves increases, emergency health serviceutilization, including ambulance service, has correspondingly increased across the world. The negative effects of air pollution on health complicate these adverse health effects. This research work is the first known study to analyze the joint effects of heatwaves and air quality on the ambulance service in Western Australia (WA). The main objective is to investigate the potential joint effects of heatwaves and air quality on the ambulance service for vulnerable populations in the Perth metropolitan area. A time series design was used. Daily data on ambulance callouts, temperature and air pollutants (CO, SO₂, NO₂, O₃, PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅) were collected for the Perth metropolitan area, WA from 2006 to 2015. Poisson regression modeling was used to assess the association between heatwaves, air quality, and ambulance callouts. Risk assessments on age, gender, socio-economic status (SES), and joint effects between heatwaves and air quality on ambulance callouts were conducted. The ambulance callout rate was higher during heatwave days (14.20/100,000/day) compared to non-heatwave days (13.95/100,000/day) with a rate ratio of 1.017 (95% confidence interval 1.012, 1.023). The ambulance callout rate was higher in males, people over 60 years old, people with low SES, and those living in coastal areas during period of heatwaves. Exposure to CO, SO₂, O₃ and PM₂.₅ increased risk on ambulance callouts and exposure to NO₂ showed joint effect with heatwave and increased risk of ambulance callouts by 3% after adjustment of all other risk factors. Ambulance callouts are an important indicator for evaluating heatwave-related emergency morbidity in WA. As the median concentrations of air pollutants in WA were lower than the Australian National Standards, the interactive effects of heatwaves and air quality on ambulance service need to be further examined, especially when air pollutants exceed the standards.

Smoky coal burning is a predominant manner for heating and cooking in most rural areas, China. Air pollution is associated with the risk of atherosclerosis, however, the link between indoor air pollution induced by smoky coal burning and atherosclerosis is not very clear. Therefore, we designed a cross-sectional study to evaluate the association of long-term exposure to smoky coal burning pollutants with the risk of atherosclerosis. 426 and 326 participants were recruited from Nangong, China and assigned as the coal exposure and control group according to their heating and cooking way, respectively. The indoor air quality (PM2.5, CO, SO₂) was monitored. The association between coal burning exposure and the prevalence of atherosclerosis was evaluated by unconditional logistic regression analysis, adjusted for confounding factors. The inflammatory cytokines mRNAs (IL-8, SAA1, TNF-α, CRP) expression in whole blood were examined by qPCR. People in the coal exposure group had a higher risk of carotid atherosclerosis compared with the control (risk ratio [RR], 1.434; 95% confidence interval [95%CI], 1.063 to 1.934; P = 0.018). The association was stronger in smokers, drinkers and younger (<45 years old) individuals. The elevation of IL-8 (0.24, 95%CI, 0.06–0.58; P < 0.05), CRP (0.37, 95%CI, 0.05–0.70; P < 0.05), TNF-α (0.41, 95%CI, 0.14–0.67; P < 0.01) mRNAs expression in whole blood were positively related to coal exposure. Our results suggested long-term exposure to smoky coal burning emissions could increase the risk of carotid atherosclerosis. The potential mechanism might relate that coal burning emissions exposure induced inflammatory cytokines elevation which had adverse effects on atherosclerotic plaque, and then promoted the development of atherosclerosis.
