The combined application of organic and synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers is being widely recommended in China’s vegetable systems to reduce reliance on synthetic N fertilizer. However, the effect of substituting synthetic fertilizer with organic fertilizer on vegetable productivity (yield, N uptake and nitrogen use efficiency) and reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses (N₂O emission, N leaching and NH₃ volatilization) remains unclear. A meta-analysis was performed using peer-reviewed papers published from 2000 to 2019 to comprehensively assess the effects of combined application of organic and synthetic N fertilizers. The results indicate that overall, the vegetable yield, N₂O emission and NH₃ volatilization were not significantly changed, whereas N leaching was reduced by 44.6% and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration increased by 12.5% compared to synthetic N fertilizer alone. Specifically, when synthetic N substitution rates (SRs) were ≤70%, vegetable yields and SOC concentration were increased by 5.5%–5.6% and 13.1–18.0%, and N leaching was reduced by 41.6%–48.1%. At the high substitution rate (SR>70%), vegetable yield was reduced by 13.6%, N₂O emission was reduced by 14.3%, and SOC concentration increased by 16.4%. Mixed animal-plant sources of organic N preferentially increased vegetable yield and SOC concentration, and reduced N₂O emission and N leaching compared with single sources of organic-N. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission was decreased by 28.4%–34.9% by combined applications of organic and synthetic N sources, relative to synthetic N fertilizer alone. We conclude that appropriate rates (SR ≤ 70%) of combined applications of organic and synthetic N fertilizers could improve vegetable yields, decrease Nr and GHG emission, and facilitate sustainable development of coupled vegetable-livestock systems.

Landfill mining and reclamation is a new strategy for addressing the lack of space available for new landfills and realizing the sustainable development of landfills. A gas-water joint bioreactor landfill is regulated by injecting water and/or recirculating leachate, and a blasting aeration system to optimize waste stabilization. In this study, four landfill reactors were constructed to investigate the effects of ventilation methods, including continuous (20 h d⁻¹) and intermittent aeration (4 h d⁻¹ in continuous or 2-h aeration per 12 h, twice a day), on the degradation of organic matter and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions in comparison with traditional landfills. A total of 62 VOCs were detected in the landfill reactors. Among them, halogenated compounds had the highest abundance (39.8–65.4 %), followed by oxygenated compounds, alkanes and alkenes, and aromatic compounds. Both intermittent and continuous aeration could accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste and increase the volatilization rate of VOCs. Compared with intermittent aeration, the degradation of landfilled waste was more quickly in the landfill reactor with continuous aeration. However, intermittent aeration could create anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic conditions, which were conducive to the growth and metabolism of anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms in landfills and thereby reduced more than 63.4 % of total VOC emissions from the landfill reactor with continuous aeration. Moreover, intermittent aeration could reduce the ventilation rate and decrease the cost of aeration by 80 % relative to continuous aeration. Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Tenericutes predominated in the landfill reactors. The environmental variables including organic matter and VOCs concentrations had significant influences on microbial community structure in the landfilled waste. These findings indicated that intermittent aeration was an effective way to accelerate the stabilization of landfilled waste and reduce the cost and environmental risks in bioreactor landfills with gas-water joint regulation.

Widespread soil contamination threatens living standards and weakens global efforts towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Detailed soil mapping is needed to guide effective countermeasures and sustainable remediation operations. Here, we review visible and infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VIRS) based detection methods in combination with machine learning. To date, proximal, airborne and spaceborne carrier devices have been employed for soil contamination detection, allowing large areas to be covered at low cost and with minimal secondary environmental impact. In this way, soil contaminants can be monitored remotely, either directly or through correlation with soil components (e.g. Fe-oxides, soil organic matter, clay minerals). Observed vegetation reflectance spectra has also been proven an effective indicator for mapping soil pollution. Calibration models based on machine learning are used to interpret spectral data and predict soil contamination levels. The algorithms used for this include partial least squares regression, neural networks, and random forest. The processes underlying each of these approaches are outlined in this review. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are explored and discussed.

Recycling of waste glycerol derived from biodiesel production to high value-added chemicals is essential for sustainable development of Bio-Circular-Green Economy. This work studied the conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol over Pt/WOₓ/Al₂O₃ catalysts, pointing out the impacts of catalyst pore sizes and operating conditions for maximizing the yield of 1,3-propanediol. The results suggested that both pore confinement effect and number of available reactive metals as well as operating conditions determined the glycerol conversion and 1,3-propanediol selectivity. The small-pore 5Pt/WOₓ/S–Al₂O₃ catalyst (6.1 nm) gave a higher Pt dispersion (32.0%), a smaller Pt crystallite size (3.5 nm) and a higher number of acidity (0.47 mmol NH₃ g⁻¹) compared to those of the large-pore 5Pt/WOₓ/L-Al₂O₃ catalyst (40.3 nm). However, glycerol conversion and 1,3-propanediol yield over the small-pore 5Pt/WOₓ/S–Al₂O₃ catalyst were significantly lower than those of the large-pore Pt/WOₓ/L-Al₂O₃ catalyst, suggesting that the diffusional restriction within the small-pore catalyst suppressed transportation of molecules to expose catalytic active sites, favoring the excessive hydrogenolysis of 1,3-propanediol, giving rise to undesirable products. The best 1,3-propanediol yield of 32.8% at 78% glycerol conversion were achieved over the 5Pt/WOₓ/L-Al₂O₃ under optimal reaction condition of 220 °C, 6 MPa, 5 h reaction time and amount of catalyst to glycerol ratio of 0.25 g mL⁻¹. However, the 1,3-propanediol yield and glycerol conversion decreased to 19.6% and 51% after the 4th reaction-regeneration which were attributed to the carbonaceous deposition and the agglomeration of Pt particles.

The release of reactive nitrogen (Nᵣ) from food production and consumption constitute the primary source of nitrogen pollution. However, nitrogen flows and the driving factors of food chain of Shanghai, China have not been previously studied. Here, we used a substance flow analysis model to analyze the changes in Nᵣ inputs and outputs in agricultural production, livestock and poultry farming, and food consumption related to the Shanghai food chain between 2000 and 2018. The driving forces of Nᵣ inputs, Nᵣ use efficiency, and Nᵣ surpluses/deficits in the food production and consumption system were also investigated. The results indicated that the main sources of Nᵣ input in the food production and consumption system were nitrogen fertilizers, livestock and poultry feed from external sources, and plant-based foods, which accounted for 36.28–59.45% of Nᵣ input in agricultural production, 37.32–76.57% of Nᵣ input in livestock and poultry farming, and 35.38–59.37% of Nᵣ input in food consumption, respectively. The main forms of Nᵣ outputs were surplus nitrogen in the soil, excretal nitrogen from livestock and poultry animals, and excretal nitrogen from humans, which accounted for 38.2–48.89% of Nᵣ output in agricultural production, 36.78–55.18% of Nᵣ output in livestock and poultry farming, and 85.36% of Nᵣ output in food consumption, respectively. From 2000 to 2018, the Nᵣ inputs per unit area from agricultural production decreased at a rate of 20.42% before 2012, and then increased at a rate of 5.72%. Moreover, the Nᵣ use efficiency of agricultural production component of Shanghai was at a low level, only 18.43–27.6%. Cultivation area of crops was the main driving forces of the Nᵣ input to food production and consumption system. These results provide essential data for controlling nitrogen pollution caused by Shanghai food production and consumption, which can serve as a reference for administrative agencies in formulating policies.

Enormous wastewater discharges have significantly impeded the sustainable development. As several economic belt has been formed in China, systematic analysis of multi-regional wastewater metabolic system is required for advancing wastewater mitigation effectively and efficiently. In this study, a distributive environmental input-output model (DEIO) is developed for the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) to provide bases for supporting sustainable development from inter-regional and inter-sectoral perspectives. The discharges and flows of wastewater and related pollutants (i.e., chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (AN)) among sectors and regions are analyzed to providing solid bases for wastewater management within the YREB. The results show that the industrial wastewater mitigation in YREB is desired urgently. The industrial wastewater discharges in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces are numerous, while Hunan and Yunnan provinces are more inclined to suffer from serious COD and AN pollution. In addition, the manufacture of food, tobacco, chemical materials, and pharmaceutical are the typical sectors with a large amount of direct wastewater discharge, and the tertiary industry is ranked at the first in indirect wastewater discharge. According to the analysis, the implementation of the “Supply-side Structure Reform” and the “Replace Subsidies with Rewards” policy can benefit the wastewater mitigation in the YREB.

Mangroves are inter-tidal ecosystems with important global ecological roles. Today, mangroves around the world are at risk of fragmentation, especially in areas with rapid urbanization. Mangroves experiencing habitat fragmentation may be more intensely affected by human activities and a scenario that might have been ignored by previous studies on trace metal (TM) environmental geochemistry. Here, we investigated the typically fragmented habitats in a subtropical mangrove estuary (the Danshuei Basin in Taiwan Strait) to evaluate how human activities affect the geochemical behaviors of TMs. Ni, Sb, Zn, Cr, Cu, and Cd were the primary contaminants found in the mangrove patches. Metal sequestration from the riverine (Ni, Cr) and in-patch activity (Sb, Zn, Cu, Cd) are primary sources of TM’s risk. Using the synthesized pollution risk assessment, we showed that most of the mangrove patches are under moderate pollution risk. A significant relationship between the TMs pollution indicators and the absorption coefficient at 254 nm (a254), implying that the a254 could be a potential convenient parameter in the TMs risk assessment, which might be partly explained by the bio-remediation of sulfate-reduction microorganism. This study demonstrates the ecological risks posed by TM pollution on urban mangrove patches and emphasizes the importance of a more comprehensive survey for estuarine mangrove patch environments to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Exploring effective uses of waste concrete powder (WCP), produced from recycling of construction & demolition waste is beneficial to the environment and sustainable development. In this study, WCP was first treated thermally to enhance the ability to remove Pb (II) from aqueous solutions. The experimental results revealed that the thermal treatment could enhance adsorption capacity due to modification of calcium bonding and pore structure of WCP. Preparation parameters such as temperature, particle size, and water-cement ratio were investigated to obtain the optimal operational conditions. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to explore influence factors of pH (1.00–6.00), ionic strength (0.05–2 mol/L), dosage (2–50 g/L), and temperature (25–45 °C). The pseudo-second-order kinetics model could adequately describe the adsorption process, and the Langmuir model was capable to predict the isotherm data well in the low concentration region (C₀ < 500 mg/L). The maximum uptake capacity for Pb (II) calculated by Langmuir model at 25, 35 and 45 °C were 46.02, 38.58 and 30.01 mg/g respectively, and the removal rate of Pb (II) was 92.96% at a dosage of 50 g/L (C₀ = 1000 mg/L). Precipitation, ion exchange, and surface complexation were identified to be the main mechanisms of Pb (II) adsorption through microscopic investigation by SEM-EDX, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and BET inspections. The study confirms that the WCP after thermal modification, can be selected as a promising adsorbent for the high performance and eco-friendliness.

It is a common practice to maintain soil fertility based on the paddy-upland rotation with green manure in the subtropical region of China. However, rare studies are known about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the paddy-upland rotation with green manure incorporation. Therefore, we conducted a field experiment of two years to compared with the effect of two kinds of green manure (CV: Chinese milk vetch and OR: Oilseed rape), and two kinds of cropping system (DR: double rice system and PR: paddy-upland rotation) on greenhouse gases emissions. We have found that the annual accumulation of CH₄ of Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean was significantly reduced by 32.95%∼63.22% compared with other treatments, mainly because Chinese milk vetch reduced the abundance of methanogens by reducing soil C/N ratio. Meanwhile increasing soil permeability resulting from paddy-upland rotation also reduced soil CH₄ emission. However, The annual accumulation of N₂O of Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean was increased by 17.39%∼870.11% compared with other treatments, mainly attributed to paddy-upland rotation decreased soil pH and nosZ abundance and increased nirK and nirS, thus enhancing N₂O emission, meanwhile the Chinese milk vetch incorporation and its interaction with the paddy-upland rotation has greatly enhanced the contents of NO₃⁻-N and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA). The area-scaled global warming potential (GWP) and the biomass-scaled greenhouse gas emissions intensity (GHGI) of Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean was reduced by 19.01%∼50.69% and 5.38%∼35.77% respectively. Thereby, the Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato || soybean cropping system was suitable for agricultural sustainable development.

The present study is aimed at investigation of surface water quality of Gulf of Kachchh (GoK), Gujarat. The main objective of this study was to convert complex dataset of water quality parameters from GoK into comprehensive, simple and interpretable observations. Hence, physico-chemical parameters and nutrients of surface water from GoK were analyzed. Chemometric results indicated that oxygen, salinity, dissolved solids, nutrient and natural conditions were the factors that affected surface water quality. The water quality index was calculated to identify water quality classes to evaluate the spatio-seasonal trend in the study area. The results revealed that water quality was moderate in summer, worst in pre-monsoon and best in post-monsoon. The study also highlighted that Marine National Park (Central GoK) was observed to be comparatively in good condition with abundant marine biodiversity. Thus, the results of chemometric study of water quality parameters can be a valuable tool for government authorities for sustainable development of GoK.
