Single-chemical thresholds cannot comprehensively evaluate the risk of chemical mixture exposure in indoor air. Moreover, a large number of researches have focused on short-term and high-concentration co-exposure scenarios related to different species, based on diverse endpoints, which hampers the application and improvement of existing risk evaluation models of chemical mixture exposures. More importantly, current risk evaluation models are not user-friendly for construction practitioners who do not have sufficient toxicological knowledge. Therefore, in this study, an inhalation experiment system and a hazard index (HI) were developed to investigate the risks associated with low-concentration and long-term inhalation exposure scenarios of formaldehyde and benzene, individually and combined, based on Drosophila melanogaster mortality. The results showed that the system exhibited good reproducibility in providing stable exposure concentrations during D. melanogaster life cycle. Furthermore, in a range of experimental concentrations, the interaction between formaldehyde and benzene was additive or synergistic, which was concentration- and ratio-dependent. This study is of great significance in harmonising and providing toxicity data under long-term and low-concentration exposure scenarios, which is beneficial for establishing a new user-friendly risk evaluation model for indoor chemical mixture exposures. It should be noted that the proposed HI value could indicate the hazard degrees of long-term inhalation exposures of formaldehyde and benzene, individually and combined, to D. melanogaster. However, the applicability of this index requires further experiments to evaluate the exposure risks of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to D. melanogaster.

Evidence suggests that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) poses potentially serious risks to the stability of coastal wetlands, an ecosystem that is extremely vulnerable to both biological and non-biological threats. However, the effects and mechanisms of sulfur (S) in mediating the growth and expansion of S. alterniflora are poorly understood, particularly when sediments are contaminated with cadmium (Cd). A 6-month greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate the mediating effect of S on Cd tolerance and growth of S. alterniflora. Treatments consisted of a factorial combination of three S rates (applied as Na₂SO₄; 0, 500, 1000 mg kg⁻¹ dry weight (DW), as S₀, S₅₀₀, and S₁₀₀₀) and four Cd rates (applied as CdCl₂; 0, 1, 2, 4 mg kg⁻¹ DW, as Cd₀, Cd₁, Cd₂, and Cd₄). Results showed that although the exogenous S supply obviously increased Cd accumulation in roots (up to 71.22 ± 6.43 mg kg⁻¹ DW) due to the decrease of Fe concentration in iron plaque (down to 4.02 ± 1.18 mg g⁻¹ DW), biomass reduction and oxidative stress in plant tissues were significantly alleviated. The addition of S significantly up-regulated the concentration of compounds related to Cd tolerance, including proline and glutathione. Therefore, the translocation of Cd was restricted, and plant growth was not impacted. The present study demonstrated that the exogenous sulfur supply could promote the growth of S. alterniflora and enhance its tolerance to Cd. Therefore, under the effects of S. alterniflora, the increased fluctuations of S pool caused by the release and deposition of S might further exacerbate S. alterniflora expansion in Cd contaminated coastal wetlands.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have attracted extensive attention since this century due to their wide distribution, persistence, bioaccumulation/biomagnification potential, and (eco)toxicity. In the present study, we investigated the sorption kinetics, sorption isotherms and desorption behaviors of legacy and emerging PFASs with different chain lengths and functional end groups onto marine sediments at four different salinities (0, 10, 20, and 30 practical salinity units (psu)). Results revealed that the sorption of PFASs onto sediment can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. PFASs sorption was influenced by both compound-specific and solution-specific parameters. The distribution coefficient (Kd) for PFASs were increased with the increase of perfluorocarbon chain length and salinity, suggesting that hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were involved in the adsorption process. 6:2 FTSA showed the lowest adsorption among PFASs with eight carbon atoms (6:2 FTSA, PFOA and PFOS). The increase of perfluorocarbon chain length of PFASs and salinity would result in the decrease of desorption rate of PFASs from sediment. In addition, PFCAs were desorbed more easily from the sediment than the PFSAs with the same perfluorocarbon chain length at all salinity groups. The present study demonstrated that salinity can apparently influence the fate of PFASs in aquatic environment and provided valuable data for modeling the fate of PFASs in real environment.

In recent years, the cardiovascular toxicity of urban fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) has sparked significant alarm. Mitochondria produce 90% of ATP and make up 30% of the volume of cardiomyocytes. Thus knowledge of myocardial mitochondrial dysfunction due to PM₂.₅ exposure is essential for further cardiotoxic effects. Here, the mechanism of PM₂.₅-induced cardiac hypertrophy through calcium overload and mitochondrial dysfunction was investigated in vivo and in vitro. Male and female BALB/c mice were given 1.28, 5.5, and 11 mg PM₂.₅/kg bodyweight weekly through oropharyngeal inhalation for four weeks and were assigned to low, medium, and high dose groups, respectively. PM₂.₅-induced myocardial edema and cardiac hypertrophy were detected in the high-dose group. Mitochondria were scattered and ruptured with abnormal ultrastructural morphology. In vitro experiments on human cardiomyocyte AC16 showed that exposure to PM₂.₅ for 24 h caused opened mitochondrial permeability transition pore --leading to excessive calcium production, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, weakened mitochondrial respiratory metabolism capacity, and decreased ATP production. Nevertheless, the administration of calcium chelator ameliorated the mitochondrial damage in the PM₂.₅-treated group. Our in vivo and in vitro results confirmed that calcium overload under PM₂.₅ exposure triggered mTOR/AKT/GSK-3β activation, leading to mitochondrial bioenergetics dysfunction and cardiac hypertrophy.

Once in the aquatic ecosystems, nanoplastics (NPls) can interact with other contaminants acting as vectors of transport and altering their toxicological effects towards organisms. Thus, the present study aims to investigate how polystyrene NPls (44 nm) interact with the herbicide phenmedipham (PHE) and affect its toxicity to zebrafish embryos. Single exposures to 0, 0.015, 0.15, 1.5, 15 and 150 mg/L NPls and 0.02, 0.2, 2 and 20 mg/L PHE were performed. Embryos were also exposed to the binominal combinations: 0.015 mg/L NPls + 2 mg/L PHE, 0.015 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE, 1.5 mg/L NPls + 2 mg/L PHE and 1.5 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE. Due to the low solubility of PHE in water, a solvent control was performed (0.01% acetone). PHE was quantified. Mortality, heartbeat and hatching rate, malformations appearance, locomotor behavior and biomarkers related to oxidative stress, neurotransmission and energy budgets were analyzed. During 96 h, NPls and PHE single and combined exposures did not affect embryos development. After 120 h, NPls induced hyperactivity and PHE induced hypoactivity. After 96 h, NPls increased catalase activity and PHE increased glutathione S-transferases activity. On the combination 0.015 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE, hyperactivity behavior was found, similar to 0.015 mg/L NPls, and cholinesterase activity was inhibited. Additionally, the combination 1.5 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE increased both catalase and glutathione S-transferases activities. The combination NPls with PHE affected more biochemical endpoints than the single exposures, showing the higher effect of the binominal combinations. Dissimilar interactions effects – no interaction, synergism and antagonism – between NPls and PHE were found. The current study shows that the effects of NPls on bioavailability and toxicity of other contaminants (e.g. PHE) cannot be ignored during the assessment of NPls environmental behavior and risks.

Since the last decade, several studies have reported the presence and effects of pharmaceutical residues in the marine environment, especially those of the antihypertensive class, such as losartan. However, there is little knowledge about the physiological effects of losartan in marine invertebrates regarding its behavior under possible coastal ocean acidification scenarios. The objective of this study was to evaluate biological effects on marine organisms at different levels of the biological organization caused by the compound losartan in water and sediment under coastal ocean acidification scenarios. Water and sediment samples were collected at five sites around the Santos Submarine Sewage outfall (SSO) and two sites around the Guarujá Submarine Sewage Outfall (GSO). Losartan was found in concentrations ranging from <LOD to 7.63 ng/L in water and from <LOQ to 3.10 ng/g in sediments. Statistical analysis showed interactive effects pH and losartan on the toxicity results. The water toxicity test with Echinometra lucunter embryos/larvae showed LOECs 50–100 mg/L, with values decreasing as the pH decreased. In the sediment assays, LOEC value for sea urchin embryo-larval development was 1.0 μg/g for all tested pHs. Regarding the lysosomal membrane stability assays with adult bivalves, a LOEC of 3000 ng/L was found for Perna perna in water exposure (both at pH 8.0 and 7.6). Effects for Mytella guyanensis were observed at environmentally relevant concentrations in sediment (LOEC = 3 ng/g at pH 8.0 and 7.6). This study demonstrated that coastal ocean acidification by itself causes effects on marine invertebrates, but can also increase the negative effects of losartan in waterborne exposure. There is a need to deepen the studies on the ecotoxicity of pharmaceutical residues and acidification of the marine environment.

The 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is an auxinic herbicide widely used in agriculture that is effective in controlling weeds. It is directly applied to the soil, to ponds or sprayed onto crops; thus, it can progressively accumulate in environmental compartments and affect non-target organisms. The aim of the present meta-analytic review is to investigate the toxic effects of 2,4-D, based on a compilation of results from different studies, which were synthesized to form a statistically reliable conclusion about the lethal effect of potentially ecological concentrations of 2,4-D in several animal species. The search was carried out in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. After the selection process was over, 87 datasets were generated and analyzed. The overall effect has indicated significant increase in the mortality rate recorded for animals exposed to environmental concentrations of 2,4-D compared to the control in the experiment (unexposed animals). The segregation of animals into taxonomic categories has shown that fish and birds presented higher mortality rates after exposure to the investigated substance. The present meta-analysis indicated larval and adult animals were susceptible among the ontogenetic development stages. Juvenile individuals exposed to different 2,4-D concentrations did not show significant difference in comparison to the control. Organisms exposed to 2,4-D immersion were the most impacted compared to those exposed by oral, spray and contact. Animals subjected to commercial formulation presented higher mortality rate than the analytical standard. Thus, 2,4-D can, in fact, increase mortality rate in animals, but it depends on species sensitivity, life stage and exposure route. This is the first meta-analytical study evaluating the mortality rate after 2,4-D exposure in several animal species.

The spatial distribution, homologue patterns, and ecological risks of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) were investigated in sediments from sixteen mangrove wetlands along the South China Coast (SCS). The total concentrations of CPs in mangrove sediments from Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, and Hainan were in the range of 933–4760, 619–2300, 375–1550, and 271–658 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The contamination levels and spatial distribution of short-chain and medium-chain CPs (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) in mangrove sediments were mainly affected by local population scale and CP industries. The dominant CP patterns in sediments were C₁₀–₁₁Cl₆₋₈ and C₁₄Cl₇₋₉ for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively. Redundancy analysis, based on CP levels and several potential influencing factors showed that MCCPs/SCCPs ratio was the main factor affecting the accumulation of CPs in mangrove sediments. Additionally, MCCP concentrations were significantly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC), indicating that TOC might affect MCCP accumulation in mangrove sediments. Risk assessments indicated that CPs would pose medium ecological risks to sediment dwelling organisms in nearly one-third of the sampling sites. This is the first comprehensive report of the sedimentary SCCPs and MCCPs in mangrove wetlands along the SCS and highlights the need for more sediment toxicity data for CPs.

Many communities around the country are undergoing contentious battles over the installation of artificial turf. Opponents are concerned about exposure to hazardous chemicals leaching from the crumb rubber cushioning fill made of recycled tires, the plastic carpet, and other synthetic components. Numerous studies have shown that chemicals identified in artificial turf, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, mutagens, and endocrine disruptors. However, few studies have looked directly at health outcomes of exposure to these chemicals in the context of artificial turf. Ecotoxicology studies in invertebrates exposed to crumb rubber have identified risks to organisms whose habitats have been contaminated by artificial turf. Chicken eggs injected with crumb rubber leachate also showed impaired development and endocrine disruption. The only human epidemiology studies conducted related to artificial turf have been highly limited in design, focusing on cancer incidence. In addition, government agencies have begun their own risk assessment studies to aid community decisions. Additional studies in in vitro and in vivo translational models, ecotoxicological systems, and human epidemiology are strongly needed to consider exposure from both field use and runoff, components other than crumb rubber, sensitive windows of development, and additional physiological endpoints. Identification of potential health effects from exposures due to spending time at artificial turf fields and adjacent environments that may be contaminated by runoff will aid in risk assessment and community decision making on the use of artificial turf.

One of the best approaches for improving the assessment of metal toxicity in aquatic organisms is to study their organotropism (i.e., the distribution of metals among organs) through a dynamical approach (i.e., via kinetic experiments of metal bioaccumulation), to identify the tissues/organs that play a key role in metal regulation (e.g., storage or excretion). This study aims at comparing the organ-specific metal accumulation of a non-essential (Cd) and an essential metal (Zn), at their environmentally relevant exposure concentrations, in the gammarid Gammarus fossarum. Gammarids were exposed for 7 days to ¹⁰⁹Cd- or ⁶⁵Zn-radiolabeled water at a concentration of 52.1 and 416 ng.L⁻¹ (stable equivalent), respectively, and then placed in clean water for 21 days. At different time intervals, the target organs (i.e., caeca, cephalons, intestines, gills, and remaining tissues) were collected and ¹⁰⁹Cd or ⁶⁵Zn contents were quantified by gamma-spectrometry. A one-compartment toxicokinetic (TK) model was fitted by Bayesian inference to each organ/metal dataset in order to establish TK parameters. Our results indicate: i) a contrasting distribution pattern of concentrations at the end of the accumulation phase (7ᵗʰ day): gills > caeca ≈ intestines > cephalons > remaining tissues for Cd and intestines > caeca > gills > cephalons > remaining tissues for Zn; ii) a slower elimination of Cd than of Zn by all organs, especially in the gills in which the Cd concentration remained constant during the 21-day depuration phase, whereas Zn concentrations decreased sharply in all organs after 24 h in the depuration phase; iii) a major role of intestines in the uptake of waterborne Cd and Zn at environmentally relevant concentrations.
