The paper considers legal framework for the surface waters quality control as per our Regulation and Directive 75/440/EEC in terms of required quality of surface waters intended to be used for the drinking water production. Research has been done in eight accumulations designed for water supply in Serbia, and water quality index has been determined using WQI method during the period 2000-2004. The water quality in these accumulations was within the treshold values in relation to the required quality.

The EU Water Framework Directive imposes special requirements for transboudary groundwater bodies, and thereby emphasizes their significance. The management of a common resource calls for an integrated approach to monitoring and status assessment, as well as implementation of improvement measures. Serbia, Hungary and Romania share a water body in the Pannonian Basin, for which cooperation has already been established within the framework of the ICPDR and at the bilateral level.

The paper presents main recommendations for monitoring groundwater from the aspect of the EU Water Framework Directive. It is concerned with some basic notions of monitoring of quantitative and chemical state of groundwater. It is pointed out that the network of gauging stations must be planned for every catchment area, to ensure a holistic and all-encompassing survey of the chemical state of groundwater, and allow detection of long-term anthropogenic effects of pollution. In addition to usual numerical and graphical presentation, the state of groundwater quality should be also presented by colours: good state - green, bad state - red.
