Phosphorus fractionation related to environmental risks resulting from intensive vegetable cropping and fertilization in a subtropical region

Overuse of phosphorus (P) fertilizer and the resulting soil P accumulation in vegetable production increases the risk of P runoff and leaching. However, P transformations under continuous fertilization and their effects on environmental risk are unclear. The current study examined the effects of long-term P fertilizer application on P fractions in different soil layers, and assessed the correlations between P fractions and environmental risks in intensive vegetable production in a subtropical region. A total of 32 fields were studied, including 8 uncultivated fields and 24 fields continuously used for vegetable production for 1–3, 4–9, or 10–15 years. The results showed that excessive P fertilizer input caused soil P surpluses ranging from 204.6 to 252.4 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Compared to uncultivated fields, vegetable fields contained higher levels of labile P, moderately labile P, sparingly labile P, and non-labile P. The combined percentage of labile P and moderately labile P increased from 55.2% in fields cultivated for 0–3 year to 65.5% in fields cultivated for 10–15 years. The concentrations of soil P fractions were higher at 0–20 cm soil depth than at 20–40 and 40–60 cm soil depth. Soil available P was positively correlated with all soil P fractions except diluted HCl-Pᵢ or concentrated HCl-Pₒ. Long-term vegetable production increased CaCl₂–P downward movement, which was positively correlated with levels of labile and moderately labile P. The P index indicated a high risk of P losses from the vegetable fields. The P index was on average 3.27-fold higher in the vegetable fields than in uncultivated fields, and was significantly correlated with soil available P and organic and inorganic P fertilizer input. The environmental risk caused by P in vegetable production should be reduced by reducing P fertilizer input so as to maintain soil available P within an optimal range for vegetable production.

Microplastic pollution has become an emergency issue in the global environment. However, little is known about the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in agroecological system. In this study, we investigated the pollution of microplastics in vegetable farmlands in suburb of Wuhan, central China. Results showed that the abundance of microplastics ranged from 320 to 12,560 items/kgdw. Microplastic pollution adjacent to the suburban roads was about 1.8 times as serious as that in the residential areas. Microplastics with size less than 0.2 mm were dominated, reaching 70% in total. The main types of microplastics were fibers and microbeads. Moreover, polyamide (32.5%) and polypropylene (28.8%) were the main types of polymer. This study proclaims the occurrence and characteristics of microplastic pollution in typical farmland soils of suburb land. It may provide significant basis for subsequent research about microplastics contaminant in the terrestrial ecosystem.

Chlorpyrifos is one of the most heavily used pesticides in domestic and agricultural insect prevention globally. Given the potential neurotoxicity of chlorpyrifos and its high detection rates in food and drinking water, health risks attributable to chlorpyrifos residue in Chinese drinking water and food in both China and Denmark were assessed in this study. Mixed left-censored handling models were used to deal with the non-detected values in chlorpyrifos concentrations. Results show that chronic exposure imputed to chlorpyrifos residue is much lower than the reference dose, and will thus not pose appreciable health risk to the consumer. Compared to the total exposure from chlorpyrifos in drinking water and food sources, chronic exposure from drinking water sources in China accounts for 0–4.4%. Health risk owing to chlorpyrifos in food within China is 6-7-fold higher than in Denmark, and this coincides with the fact that all application of chlorpyrifos is banned in Denmark, in contrast to China. However, the Danish consumers are still exposed from imported food items. The main health risk contributors in China are the food groups of Grains and grain-based products and Vegetable and vegetable products, while the main chronic health risk contributor in Denmark is the food group of imported fruit and fruit products.

To elucidate the origin of the wide-spread contaminations of plant derived commodities with various alkaloids, we employed co-cultures of pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) containing Senecio jacobaea plants with various alkaloid free acceptor plants. Our analyses revealed that all plants grown in the vicinity of the Senecio donor plants indeed contain significant amounts of the PAs, which previously had been synthesized in the Senecio plants. These findings illustrate that typical secondary metabolites, such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids, are commonly transferred and exchanged between living plants. In contrast to the broad spectrum of alkaloids in Senecio, in the acceptor plants nearly exclusively jacobine is accumulated. This indicates that this alkaloid is exuded specifically by the Senecio roots. Although the path of alkaloid transfer from living donor plants is not yet fully elucidated, these novel insights will extend and change our understanding of plant-plant interactions and reveal a high relevance with respect to the widespread alkaloidal contaminations of plant-derived commodities. Moreover, they could be the basis for the understanding of various so far not fully understood phenomena in cultivation of various crops, e.g. the beneficial effects of crop rotations or the co-cultivation of certain vegetables.

Dietary arsenic (As) intake from food is of great concern, and developing a reliable model capable of predicting As concentrations in plant edible parts is desirable. In this study, pot experiments were performed with 16 Chinese upland soils spiked with arsenate [As(V)] to develop a predictive model for As concentrations in pepper fruits (Capsicum annum L.). Our results showed that after three months’ aging, concentrations of bioavailable As (extracted by 0.05 M NH₄H₂PO₄) in various soils varied widely, depending on soil total As concentrations and soil properties such as soil pH and amorphous iron (Fe) contents. Furthermore, both the bioconcentration factor (BCF, denoted as the ratio of fruit As to soil As) and total As concentrations in pepper fruits were largely determined by concentrations of bioavailable As, which explained 27% and 69% variations in the BCF and fruit As concentrations, respectively. Apart from bioavailable As, soil pH and Fe contents were another two important factors influencing As accumulation in pepper fruits. Taking the three factors into account, concentrations of fruit As can be well predicted using a stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) analysis (R² = 0.80, RMSE = 0.17). Arsenic species in soils and edible parts were also analyzed. Although As(V) predominated in soils (>96%), As in pepper fruits presented as As(V) (46%) and arsenite [As(III)] (39%) with small amount of methylated As (<15%). Aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analysis revealed that inorganic As concentrations in pepper fruits were determined by concentrations of bioavailable As, phosphorus (P) and Fe in soils. In contrast to inorganic As, methylated As concentrations were not correlated with those factors in soils. Taken together, this study established an empirical model for predicting As concentrations in pepper fruits. The predictive model can be used for establishing the As threshold in fruit vegetable farming soils.

The long-term use of animal manure in agriculture has resulted in estrogen pollution, which poses risks to facility vegetable soils. Owing to the complex soil composition, estrogen may exhibit a variety of behaviors at the water/soil interface. This study demonstrated the role of humic acid (HA) on the 17β-estradiol (E2) adsorption by clay minerals (montmorillonite, kaolinite, and hematite). The interfacial behaviors were investigated using adsorption kinetics and isotherms data. Then, the effects of temperature, pH, and bisphenol A (BPA) on the interactions between humic-mineral complexes and E2 were explored. The adsorption of E2 is an exothermic and spontaneous process, and the addition of HA to minerals significantly promoted their E2 adsorption capacities. Higher pH levels (>10) and the presence of BPA decreased the adsorption capacities of minerals and mineral complexes for E2. Moreover, intercalation, hydrophobic partitioning, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding could dominate the E2 adsorption onto complexes. These results provided insight into the interfacial behaviors of E2 on the surfaces of humic-mineral complexes and promoted the understanding of the migration and transport of estrogens in soils.

This study was initiated after the appearance of chlorotic and necrotic lesions on vegetation in the vicinity of a glassworks. The aim was to establish whether the cause was an uncontrolled release of gaseous fluorides. Five different plant species (Norway spruce, peach, common hornbeam, common bean, common grape vine) were collected in the influenced area, and the fluorine (F) content was determined by a fluoride ion selective electrode after prior total sample decomposition by alkaline carbonate fusion. The measurement results were reported together with their measurement uncertainties (MUs), which were evaluated according to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. The F contents at comparable distances from the emitter and in a clean area, free from natural or anthropogenic fluoride emissions, were 87–676 and 10 μg g⁻¹, respectively, thereby confirming the release of gaseous fluorides from the glassworks. The F contents in samples of Norway spruce taken at various radial distances from the emitter suggest that the emitted gaseous fluorides were spread about evenly in all directions from the source following an inverse-power function. Estimated distances at which the F content would decrease to 50 μg g⁻¹ (allowed maximum content of F in feeding stuffs) and 21 μg g⁻¹ (maximum fluoride content in vegetables and fruits in relation to the upper limit of fluoride intake for humans) were 378 m and 571 m, respectively, from the emitter. Evaluation of our results for compliance with specification revealed a lack of regulation on fluoride content in the diet of humans and animals as well as a lack of guidelines on how to take into account MU.

Exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked with adverse health outcomes of the circulatory and nervous systems. Given that falls are closely related to circulatory and nervous health, we hypothesize that air pollution may adversely affect fall-related injury. We employed Wave 1 data from 36,662 participants aged ≥50 years in WHO's Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health in six low- and middle-income countries. Ambient annual concentration of PM2.5 was estimated using satellite data. A three-level logistic regression model was applied to examine the long-term association between ambient PM2.5 and the prevalence of fall-related injury, and associated disease burden, as well as the potential effect modification of consumption of fruit and vegetables. Ambient PM2.5 was found to be significantly associated with the risk of fall-related injury. Each 10 μg/m3 increase corresponded to 18% (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.28) increase in fall-related injury after adjusting for various covariates. The association was relatively stronger among participants with lower consumption of fruit (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.33) than higher consumption (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.92, 1.23), and among those with lower vegetable consumption (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.28) than higher consumption (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.91, 1.27). Our study suggests that ambient PM2.5 may be one risk factor for fall-related injury and that higher consumption of fruit and vegetables could alleviate this effect.

China accounts for more than half of the world's vegetable production, and identifying the contribution of vegetable production to nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions in China is therefore important. We performed a meta-analysis that included 153 field measurements of N₂O emissions from 21 field studies in China. Our goal was to quantify N₂O emissions and fertilizer nitrogen (N) based-emission factors (EFs) in Chinese vegetable systems and to clarify the effects of rates and types of N fertilizer in both open-field and greenhouse systems. The results indicated that the intensive vegetable systems in China had an average N₂O emission of 3.91 kg N₂O-N ha⁻¹ and an EF of 0.69%. Although the EF was lower than the IPCC default value of 1.0%, the average N₂O emission was generally greater than in other cropping systems due to greater input of N fertilizers. The EFs were similar in greenhouse vs. open-field systems but N₂O emissions were about 1.4 times greater in greenhouses. The EFs were not affected by N rate, but N₂O emissions for both open-field and greenhouse systems increased with N rate. The total and fertilizer-induced N₂O emissions, as well as EFs, were unaffected by the type of fertilizers in greenhouse system under same N rates. In addition to providing basic information about N₂O emissions from Chinese vegetable systems, the results suggest that N₂O emissions could be reduced without reducing yields by treating vegetable systems in China with a combination of synthetic N fertilizer and manure at optimized economic rates.

Foodstuffs may be contaminated by organophosphate esters (OPEs) and become an important source of human exposure since OPEs are ubiquitous in the environment. In the present study, 10 OPEs were analyzed in various food matrices collected from a city in Eastern China including chicken, pork, fishes, vegetables, tofu, eggs, milk and cereals. The concentrations of Σ₁₀OPEs ranged from 1.1 to 9.6 ng g⁻¹ fresh weight (fw) in the foodstuffs. Cereals had the highest residual level of total OPEs with a mean value of 5.7 ng g⁻¹ fw. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate was detected in all foodstuff samples and showed the highest median residual concentration of 1.3 ng g⁻¹ fw among the OPE analogs. The daily dietary intake of OPEs was calculated as 3.6 and 2.4 μg d⁻¹ for adults and children. Cereals were identified as the major contributor to the total OPEs among different types of foodstuffs. Preliminary exposure assessment revealed that the current non-cancer health risks of OPEs via dietary intake were in the range of 10⁻⁵-10⁻³, indicating low risk levels. Moreover, the hazard index of OPEs indicated that the risk for children (3 × 10⁻³) was higher than adults (2 × 10⁻³).
