Presently, graphenic nanomaterials are being studied as candidates for wastewater pollutant removal. In this study, two graphite oxides produced from natural graphite with different grain sizes (325 and 10 mesh), their respective reduced graphene oxides and one reduced graphene oxide with nitrogen functional groups were synthesized and tested to remove a surfactant model substrate, Triton X-100, from an aqueous solution. Kinetic experiments were carried out and adjusted to pseudo-first order equation, pseudo-second order equation, Elovich, Chain-Clayton and intra-particle diffusion models. Reduced graphene oxides displayed an instantaneous adsorption due to their accessible and hydrophobic surfaces, while graphite oxides hindered the TX100 adsorption rate due to their highly superficial oxygen content. Results from the adsorption isotherms showed that the Sips model perfectly described the TX100 adsorption behavior of these materials. Higher adsorption capacities were developed with reduced graphene oxides, being maximum for the material produced from the lower graphite grain size (qₑ = 3.55·10⁻⁶ mol/m²), which could be explained by a higher surface area (600 m²/g), a lower amount of superficial oxygen (O/C = 0.04) and a more defected structure (ID/IG = 0.85). Additionally, three commercial high surface area graphites in the range of 100–500 m²/g were evaluated for comparison purposes. In this case, better adsorption results were obtained with a more graphitic material, HSAG100 (qₑ = 1.72·10⁻⁶ mol/m²). However, the best experimental results of this study were obtained using synthesized graphenic materials.

Microbial selenite reduction has increasingly attracted attention from the scientific community because it allows the separation of toxic Se from waste sources with the concurrent recovery of Se nanoparticles, a multifunctional material in nanotechnology industries. In this study, four selenite-reducing bacteria, isolated from a river water sample, were found to reduce selenite by > 85% within 3 d of incubation, at ambient temperature. Among them, strain NDSe-7, belonging to genus Lysinibacillus, can reduce selenite and produce Se nanospheres in alkaline conditions, up to pH 10.0, and in salinity of up to 7.0%. This strain can reduce 80 mg/L of selenite to elemental Se within 24 h at pH 6.0–8.0, at a temperature of 30–40 °C, and salinity of 0.1–3.5%. Strain NDSe-7 exhibited potential for use in Se removal and recovery from industrial saline wastewater with high alkalinity. This study indicates that extremophilic microorganisms for environmental remediation can be found in a conventional environment.

It is still a great challenge to address nutrient pollution issues caused by various point sources and non-point sources on the watershed scale. Source contribution analysis based on watershed modeling can help watershed managers identify major pollution sources, propose effective management plans and make smart decisions. This study demonstrated a technical procedure for addressing watershed-scale water pollution problems in an agriculture-dominated watershed, using the Dengsha River Watershed (DRW) in Dalian, China as an example. The SWAT model was improved by considering the constraints of soil nutrient concentration, i.e., nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), when modeling the nutrient uptake by a typical crop, corn. Then the modified SWAT model was used to quantify the contributions of all known pollution sources to the N and P pollution in the DRW. The results showed that crop production and trans-administrative wastewater discharge were the two dominant sources of nutrient pollution. This study further examined the responses of nutrient loss and crop yield to different fertilizer application schemes. The results showed that N fertilizer was the limiting factor for crop yield and that excessive levels of P were stored in the agricultural soils of the DRW. An N fertilizer application rate of approximately 40% of the current rate was suggested to balance water quality and environmental protection with crop production. The long-term impact of legacy P was investigated with a 100-year future simulation that showed the crop growth could maintain for 12 years even after P fertilization ceased. Our study highlights the need to consider source attribution, fertilizer application and legacy P impacts in agriculture-dominated watersheds. The analysis framework used in this study can provide a scientifically sound procedure for formulating adaptive and sustainable nutrient management strategies in other study areas.

The Yellow River is the second largest river in China. Carbon transport by the Yellow River has significant influence on riverine carbon cycles in Asia. During the wet season, the riverine carbon was mainly found in dissolved form, i.e., dissolved organic carbon (DOC), along the entire course of the river. The distinct spatial variations of DOC concentration were observed at different reaches of the mainstream (p < 0.01), while the highest mean DOC concentration was generally observed at midstream (4.13 ± 0.91 mg/L). Carbon stable isotope analysis δ¹³C and C: N ratio of DOC, evidenced the sources of DOC in headwater and upstream were primarily the terrestrial plants (94% and 61%), but it was changed to soil organic matter (SOM) in mid- and downstream (36% and 37%), and the contribution of sewage to DOC were also increased to 17% and 18%. In the whole mainstream of the Yellow River, water temperature (WT) had a significant impact on DOC concentration, and it could explain 67% of the DOC variance. However, in a large catchment, the driving mechanisms on the DOC variations in headwaters will not necessarily be those controlling DOC trends in downstream. The study firstly quantified, in headwater and upstream, the natural factors explained as much as 65% and 73% of the DOC variations, respectively. In mid- and downstream areas, DOC was significantly influenced by the amount of wastewater discharged by the industry and the use of chemical fertilizers (p < 0.05). These findings may facilitate a better assessment of global riverine carbon cycling and may help to reveal the importance of the balance between development and environmental sustainability with the changing DOC transport features in the Yellow River due to human disturbances.

This review is intended to evaluate the use of ferrate (Fe(VI)), being a green coagulant, sustainable and reactive oxidant, to remove micro pollutants especially pharmaceutical pollutants in contaminated water. After a brief description of advanced oxidation processes, fundamental dimensions regarding the nature, reactivity, and chemistry of this oxidant are summarized. The degradation of contaminants by Fe(VI) involves several mechanisms and reactive agents which are critically evaluated. The efficiency and chemistry of Fe(VI) oxidation differs according to the reaction conditions and activation agent, such as soluble Fe(VI) processes, which involve Fe(VI), UV light, and electro-Fe(VI) oxidation. Fe(VI) application methods (including single dose, multiple doses, chitosan coating etc), and Fe(VI) with activating agents (including sulfite, thiosulfate, and UV) are also described to degrade the micro pollutants. Besides, application of Fe(VI) to remove pharmaceuticals in wastewater are intensely studied. Electrochemical prepared Fe(VI) has more wide application than wet oxidation method. Meanwhile, we elaborated Fe(VI) performance, limitations, and proposed innovative aspects to improve its stability, such as the generation of Fe(III), synergetic effects, nanopores entrapment, and nanopores capsules. This study provides conclusive direction for synergetic oxidative technique to degrade the micro pollutants.

In developing countries, where high levels of antimicrobial resistance are observed in hospitals, the surveillance of this phenomenon in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the environment is very limited, especially using cutting-edge culture-independent methods. In this study, the composition of bacterial communities, the resistome and mobilome (the pool of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), respectively) at a WWTP were determined using shotgun metagenomics and culture-based approaches. Wastewater samples were collected at four sampling points of a WWTP in Antioquia, Colombia. A total of 24 metagenomes were analyzed. Specifically, there were marked differences in bacterial community composition, resistome, and mobilome, according to the WWTP sampling points. Bacterial families of clinical importance such as Moraxellaceae, Aeromonadaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae were mainly detected in the WWTP influent and effluent samples. Genes encoding resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin, β-lactams, and those conferring multidrug resistance (e.g., acrB, adeG, and mexD) were the most abundant. Moreover, some clinically important ARGs such as blaKPC₋₂ and blaCTX₋M, and others not reported locally, such as blaTEM₋₁₉₆, blaGES₋₂₃, blaOXA₋₁₀, mcr-3, and mcr-5 were frequently detected. Co-occurrence network analyses indicated a significant association of ARGs such as blaOXA₋₅₈ and blaKPC genes with Aeromonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae. Among the markers of MGEs, intI1 and ISCR8 were the most frequently detected. Altogether, this work reveals the importance of shotgun metagenomics and culture-based approaches in antimicrobial resistance studies. The findings also support that WWTPs are hotspots for antimicrobial resistance, whose analysis constitutes a powerful tool to predict the impact of antimicrobial resistance in a population.

The spatial distributions, possible sources of C₉–C₁₇ chlorinated paraffins (CPs), and the ecological risks posed in mangrove sediment in Dongzhai Harbor (Hainan Island, China) were investigated. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with electron capture negative ionization mass spectrometry was used to determine 50 C₉–C₁₇ CP congener groups. The concentrations of C₉-CPs, short-chain CPs (SCCPs), and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) in the mangrove sediment samples were 8.28–79.7, 89.2–931, and 58.8–834 ng g⁻¹ dry weight, respectively. The CPs concentrations in the mangrove sediment samples were moderate compared with those found in other regions worldwide. The spatial distributions and congener patterns of the CPs indicated that the CP concentrations were mainly controlled by local emissions and that wastewater discharged from livestock and shrimp breeding facilities and domestic sewage were the main sources of CPs in mangrove sediment in Dongzhai Harbor. C₁₀Cl₆–₇ and C₁₄Cl₇–₈ were the dominant SCCP and MCCP congener groups, respectively. The MCCP concentrations and total organic carbon contents significantly correlated (R² = 0.607, P < 0.05). Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis indicated that the SCCP and MCCP congeners were from different commercial CP formulations and sources. Risk assessments suggested that SCCPs and MCCPs in mangrove sediment in Dongzhai Harbor do not currently pose marked risks to sediment-dwelling organisms.

Biomass of Java plum (JP) and amaltash (AT) seeds were employed to remove arsenic from synthetic wastewater, cost effectively. The prepared biomasses were characterized by FE-SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, and ICP techniques. Experimentation the optimization study has been carried out by using Design-software 6.0.8. Response surface methodology has been applied to design the experiments where we have used three factors and three levels Box-Behnken design (BBD). Arsenic removal ability of bio-sorbents was evaluated and optimized by varying pH, adsorbent dose concentration of arsenic in synthetic wastewater. For 2.5 mg/L arsenic concentration and 80 mg adsorbent dose at pH 8.8 Java plum seeds (JP) based bio-adsorbent removed ∼93% and amaltash seeds (AT) based bio-adsorbent removed ∼91% arsenic from synthetic wastewater. The adsorption behaviour better explained following Freundlich model (R² = 0.99) compared to Temkin model (R² = 0.986) for As (III) ions. The adsorption capacity was 1.45 mg g⁻¹ and 1.42 mg g⁻¹ for JP and AT, respectively after 80 min under optimal set of condition. The adsorption kinetics was explained by either pseudo-first order model or Elovich model.

Excessive copper (Cu) in contaminated soil and groundwater has attracted continuous attentions due to the bioaccumulation and durability. In this study, the feasibility of remediation of heavy metal pollution in soil and groundwater was investigated using hydroxyapatite/calcium silicate hydrate (HAP/C–S–H) recovered from phosphorus-rich wastewater in farmland. The results show that the pH has a strong effect on copper removal from Cu-contaminated groundwater but the impact of ion strength on the removal is weak. In general, high pH and low ion strength give better results in copper removal. Kinetic and isotherm data from the study fit well with Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of HAP/C–S–H (138 mg/g) was higher than that of C–S–H (90.3 mg/g) when pH value, temperature, and ionic strength were 5, 308 K, and 0.01 M, respectively. Thermodynamics results indicate that Cu removal is a spontaneous and endothermic process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that the mechanism of copper removal involves physical adsorption, chemical precipitation and ion exchange. For the remediation of Cu-contaminated soil, 76.3% of leachable copper was immobilized by HAP/C–S–H after 28 d. Acid soluble Cu, the main contributor to biotoxicity, decreased significantly while reducible and residual Cu increased. After immobilization, the acid neutralization capacity of the soil increased and the dissolution of copper was substantially reduced in near-neutral pH. It can be concluded that HAP/C–S–H is an effective, low-cost and eco-friendly reagent for in-situ remediation of heavy metal polluted soil and groundwater.

The continuous influx of opioid compounds into aquatic environments has become an increasing and persistent concern, due to their extensive use. This is especially alarming as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are unable to completely remove them. Despite the reported health concerns, the occurrence of opioid compounds in the environment has not received much attention. The present study investigates the occurrence of 19 opioids in four WWTPs and their respective receiving water bodies. All wastewater samples revealed opioids at concentration ranging from ng/L to μg/L with most influents having higher concentrations than effluents. WWTPs appeared to perform poorly (p > 0.05 between influents and effluents), and were unable to remove some opioids including Methadone (−27.3%) from the Leeuwkuil WWTP, Codeine (−21.7%) and Thebaine (−3.77%) from the Sandspruit WWTP, and Hydrocodone (−1.06%) from the Meyerton WWTP, respectively. Samples collected from the Leeuwkuil WWTP were the most contaminated, with eighteen out of nineteen opioid analogues exceeding 1 μg/L. Upstream surface water contained less opioids (most < LOQ) than downstream (p < 0.05), with Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, Fentanyl, Ketamine and Dihydrocodeine not detected. The occurrence of high concentrations of opioid analogues in downstream surface water (298 ng/L −10.8 μg/L for Klip River, 4.49 ng/L −13.1 μg/L for Vaal River, 70.5 ng/L −10.0 μg/L for Soutspruit River and 8.0 ng/L – 2.43 μg/L for Sun Spruit River) was directly linked to their mass loads in the respective wastewater effluent samples.
