The derivation of sediment quality guideline values (SQGVs) presents significant challenges. Arguably the most important challenge is to conduct toxicity tests using contaminated sediments with physico-chemistry that represents real-world scenarios. We used a novel metal spiking method for an experiment that ultimately aims to derive a uranium SQGV. Two pilot studies were conducted to inform the final spiking design, i.e. percolating a uranyl sulfate solution through natural wetland sediments. An initial pilot study that used extended mixing equilibration phases produced hardened sediments not representative of natural sediments. A subsequent percolation method produced sediment with similar texture to natural sediment and was used as the method for spiking the sediments. The range of total recoverable uranium (TR-U) concentrations achieved was 8–3200 mg/kg. This reflected the concentrations found in natural wetlands and water management ponds found on a uranium mine site and was above natural levels. Dilute-acid extractable uranium (AE-U) concentrations were >80% of total concentrations, indicating that much of the uranium in the spiked sediment was labile and potentially bioavailable. The portion of TR-U extractable as AE-U was similar at the start and end of the 4.5-month field-deployment. Porewater uranium (PW–U) analyses indicated that partition coefficients (Kd) were 2000–20,000 L/kg, and PW-U was greater in post- than pre-field-deployed samples when TR-U was ≤1500 mg/kg, indicating the binding became weaker during the field-deployment period. At higher spiked-U concentrations, the PW-U was lower post-field-deployment. Comparing the physico-chemical data of the spiked sediments with environmental monitoring data from sediments in the vicinity of a uranium mining operation indicated that they were representative of sediments contaminated by mining and that the U-spiked sediments had a clear U concentration gradient. This confirmed the suitability of the spiking procedure for preparing sediments that were suitable for deriving a SQGV for uranium.

Free refill drinking water kiosks are an essential sustainable water supply system for people in metropolitan areas worldwide. Despite their importance in urban settings, the impact of microplastic contamination remains elusive. Here, we investigated the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in drinking-water samples collected from 22 self-distributed refill kiosks located in 14 multiuse urban parks spread across nine municipalities in Mexico City (Mexico). The results showed that microplastics were detected in all the samples, with an overall mean concentration of 74.18 ± 48.76 microplastics L⁻¹. The abundance of microplastics was significantly different between sampled kiosks, ranging from 23 ± 11.31 to 202 ± 28.39 microplastics L⁻¹. There were more fibrous microplastics (88%) than fragments (9%) and films (3%), with the majority (56%) being <200 μm in length. They were predominantly transparent (85%), with only a few being colored (15%; blue, red, green, and brown). Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy further revealed microplastics of various polymer types, including polyvinyl alcohol, high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl alcohol, acrylic, alkyd resin, and viscose. Based on our findings, drinking water from urban refill kiosks exposes children more than adults to microplastics. Furthermore, the steps that should be taken at urban refill kiosks to prevent microplastic pollution while offering recreational services to people have been highlighted. Therefore, this first study serves as a wake-up call to urban water management to improve the safety of water from emerging pollutants like microplastics in the infrastructure of refill kiosks.

Groundwater nitrate (NO₃⁻) pollution is a worldwide environmental problem. Therefore, identification and partitioning of its potential sources are of great importance for effective control of groundwater quality. The current study was carried out to identify the potential sources of groundwater NO₃⁻ pollution and determine their apportionment in different land use/land cover (LULC) types in a traditional agricultural area, Weining Plain, in Northwest China. Multiple hydrochemical indices, as well as dual NO₃⁻ isotopes (δ¹⁵N–NO₃ and δ¹⁸O–NO₃), were used to investigate the groundwater quality and its influencing factors. LULC patterns of the study area were first determined by interpreting remote sensing image data collected from the Sentinel-2 satellite, then the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) was used to estimate proportional contributions of the potential sources to groundwater NO₃⁻ concentrations. Groundwater quality in the study area was influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, with anthropological impact being more important. The results of LULC revealed that the irrigated land is the dominant LULC type in the plain, covering an area of 576.6 km² (57.18% of the total surface study area of the plain). On the other hand, the results of the NO₃⁻ isotopes suggested that manure and sewage (M&S), as well as soil nitrogen (SN), were the major contributors to groundwater NO₃⁻. Moreover, the results obtained from the MixSIAR model showed that the mean proportional contributions of M&S to groundwater NO₃⁻ were 55.5, 43.4, 21.4, and 78.7% in the forest, irrigated, paddy, and urban lands, respectively. While SN showed mean proportional contributions of 29.9, 43.4, 61.5, and 12.7% in the forest, irrigated, paddy, and urban lands, respectively. The current study provides valuable information for local authorities to support sustainable groundwater management in the study region.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute a significant environmental pollution group that reaches toxic levels with anthropogenic activities. The adverse effects of nanoplastics accumulating in ecosystems with the degradation of plastic wastes are also a growing concern. Previous studies have generally focused on the impact of single PAH or plastic fragments exposure on plants. However, it is well recognized that these contaminants co-exist at varying rates in agricultural soil and water resources. Therefore, it is critical to elucidate the phytotoxicity and interaction mechanisms of mixed pollutants. The current study was designed to comparatively investigate the single and combined effects of anthracene (ANT, 100 mg L⁻¹), fluorene (FLU, 100 mg L⁻¹) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PS, 100 mg L⁻¹) contaminations in wheat. Plants exposed to single ANT, FLU and PS treatments demonstrated decline in growth, water content, high stomatal limitations and oxidative damage. The effect of ANT + FLU on these parameters was more detrimental. In addition, ANT and/or FLU treatments significantly suppressed photosynthetic capacity as determined by carbon assimilation rate (A) and chlorophyll a fluorescence transient. The antioxidant system was not fully activated (decreased superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and glutathione reductase) under ANT + FLU, then hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) content (by 2.7-fold) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) (by 2.8-fold) increased. Interestingly, ANT + PS and FLU + PS improved the growth, water relations and gas exchange parameters. The presence of nanoplastics recovered the adverse effects of ANT and FLU on growth by protecting the photosynthetic photochemistry and reducing oxidative stress. PAH plus PS reduced the ANT and FLU accumulation in wheat leaves. In parallel, the increased antioxidant system, regeneration of ascorbate, glutathione and glutathione redox status observed under ANT + PS and FLU + PS. These findings will provide an information about the phytotoxicity mechanisms of mixed pollutants in the environment.

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are loaded into rice grain via two pathways: i) root uptake from the soil and then translocation to the grain, and ii) remobilization of Cd and As previously accumulated within the vegetative tissues to the grain. However, the relative contributions of the two pathways are not well understood in soil-grown rice plants. In this study, we used eight different water management regimes applied at different growth periods to manipulate the concentrations of Cd and As in porewater and then established a mathematical model to estimate the relative importance of the two pathways. Different water management regimes had dramatic and opposite effects on the solubility of Cd and As in soil, and their subsequent accumulation in both straw and grain. Water management applied at different growth periods had markedly different impacts on grain Cd and As concentrations. Water management during grain filling had a much greater impact on grain Cd than on grain As concentrations, whereas water treatment during the vegetative growth stage had a larger effect on grain As concentrations. Under the typical water management practice (i.e. flooding through the vegetative stage followed by drainage during grain filling), grain filling is the key period for the accumulation of Cd in the grain, with 98% of the grain Cd from root uptake during this period and the contribution of remobilization being very limited. In contrast, 95% of the grain As was remobilized from that accumulated within the plant prior to the grain filling, with the tillering, jointing, and heading period each contributing 20–40% of the grain As, whereas root uptake during grain filling contributed minor. These differences can be harnessed to design a segmented water management strategy to control grain Cd and As accumulation simultaneously.

Sediment phosphorus (P) release and retention are important in controlling whole-system P dynamics and budget in eutrophic lakes. Here we combine short- (seasonal) and long-term (years to decades) studies to quantify the internal P loading and P release potential in the sediments of Lake Chaohu and explore their controlling mechanisms. In the west region of the lake, short-term P diffusive fluxes ranged from 0.2 mg/m²·d⁻¹ to 6.69 mg/m²·d⁻¹ (averaged 2.76 mg/m²·d⁻¹) and long-term net P release ranged from 2.25 mg/m²·d⁻¹ to 8.94 mg/m²·d⁻¹ (averaged 5.34 mg/m²·d⁻¹); in the east region, short-term P diffusive fluxes varied from 0.73 mg/m²·d⁻¹ to 1.76 mg/m²·d⁻¹ (averaged 1.05 mg/m²·d⁻¹) and long-term P release ranged from 0.13 mg/m²·d⁻¹ to 4.15 mg/m²·d⁻¹ (averaged 1.3 mg/m²·d⁻¹). Both short- and long-term P releases were in the same order of magnitudes as the external P inputs (3.56 mg/m²·d⁻¹). Comparison of the long-term and short-term sediment P release indicates that while the high summer P release in the east might only represent a snapshot value, the sediments in the west contribute to large P release for years or even decades, impeding water quality recovery under lake management. Mobilization of surface sediment legacy P accounted for 81% of short-term P release. The long-term release was dominated by remobilization of iron bond P (BD-P) (average 52.1%) at all sites, while Aluminium-bound P (NaOH-rP) exhibited partly reactive and potentially mobile, releasing P to the water column in most sites in the west. Our study demonstrates the importance of sediments as P sources in lake Chaohu. The combination of short- and long-term P release studies can help understand the roles of sediments in regulating the water quality and eutrophication.

This study helps understand the ballast water-mediated species spread risk dynamics in the Mediterranean and examine potential policy options for ballast water management to further reduce species spread risk in the region. Results show that Gibraltar, Suez, and Istanbul remained high-risk ports from 2012 to 2018, and they are hub ports connecting several clusters. We reveal ballast water management implications for both the Mediterranean region and individual hub ports respectively. To further reduce the risks of individual Mediterranean hub ports beyond the IMO standards, the most effective (cost-effective) regulatory method is to set more stringent regulation towards such hub ports besides the IMO regulation. To further reduce the risks of the Mediterranean as a whole, the most effective (cost-effective) regulatory scenario is to set more stringent regulation towards all Mediterranean ports besides the IMO regulation. The barge-based method is the most cost-effective technology to achieve stricter regulations.

Ballast water is a primary vector for the global transfer of non-indigenous species, which threaten the balance of aquatic ecosystems. The second-generation high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and culture method (by the first-generation sequencing technology) were used to explore pathogens in ballast water from international ships on the routes of China-Australia (AU), China-Europe (E) and China-America (AM). No significant differences in dominant bacteria among ballast water samples from different routes. Thirty-four pathogens were detected in all samples by HTS, including Acinetobacter lwoffii, Brevundimonas vesicular and Pseudomonas sp., etc., while nine pathogens were detected by culture, including Pseudoalteromonas piscicida, Rhodococcus erythropolis and Vibrio alginolyticus, etc. All ballast water carried a potential bacteriological risk to Yangshan Port. The abundance of pathogens was significant affected by holding time, temperature, salinity and NH₄. Detection of pathogens as much as possible through different technologies is desirable, more pathogens could provide beneficial information for enhancing ballast water management.

Sustainable management of groundwater needs comprehensive study on water quality in present scenario. Hence, an understanding on the hydro geochemistry, saltwater intrusion, spatiotemporal-seasonal variations and irrigational suitability of groundwater becomes a must, especially in coastal regions. Our study area is one such place where all the parameters play a major role against sustainable management. The study pointed out that majority of the samples is brackish with two notable geochemical facies for pre monsoon and post monsoon. Factor and cluster analyses revealed that EC, TDS, Na⁺, Cl⁻, Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ are the major contributors. Gibb's diagram supported the dominance of rock weathering and evaporation in controlling the groundwater chemistry. Sea water intrusion was mapped using HFE diagrams and the Irrigational suitability is studied using USSL, SAR, %Na, etc. The data and results from this study might provide crucial information to water management authorities in dealing groundwater scarcity and pollution problems.

Ballast water is a leading pathway for the global introduction of aquatic nonindigenous species. Most international ships are expected to install ballast water management systems (BWMS) by 2024 to treat ballast water before release. This study examines if ballast water discharges managed by BWMS are meeting standards for organisms ≥50 μm in minimum dimension (i.e., <10 organisms per m³; typically zooplankton). Representative samples of ballast water were collected from 29 ships (using 14 different BWMS) arriving to Canada during 2017–2018. Fourteen samples (48 %) had zooplankton concentrations clearly exceeding the standard (ranging from 18 to 3822 organisms per m³). Nonetheless, compared to earlier management strategies, BWMS appear to reduce the frequency of high-risk introduction events. BWMS filter mesh size was an important predictor of zooplankton concentration following treatment. Greater rates of compliance may be achieved as ship crews gain experience with operation and maintenance of BWMS.
