As a consequence of bombing of Novi Sad Oil Refinery, Serbia (Serbia&Montenegro), the spillage of large amounts of oil and derivatives caused hydrocarbons pollution of the area surrounding the Refinery and the river Danube, thus directly endangering the entire water source "Ratno ostro". As a measure of protection in the division zone of the Refinery and the water source area, a hydraulic barrier was constructed. Within the process of monitoring piezometer water quality and the water supplied by protection system wells, microbiological analyses of water were carried out with the aim of supervising the barrier functioning. The results have shown that bacterial populations in polluted areas exhibit a duel role: they act as bioindicators of a certain pollution, but at the same time they take part in the process of selfpurification.

This work presents a short review of the existing situation, nature conditions and recognised facts which are important for the sea- pollution of the oil, and another kind of the spill ship oils, inside of the Boka Bay and in the area of the open Adriatic Sea. The proposed original and innovative action concerns the large scale application of a new technique for a cleaning up waterborne oil spills, based on the magnetic separation method by using the material "CleanMag", an oleophillic, and porous material which also is magnetic with an increased density lower than that of the water.

Degradation of groundwater quality whish is used as a raw water source, caused by the continuous pollution, develops gradually. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the pollution influence, on the first place by the expect concentration of hazardous substances in groundwater. Water source protection measures are based on the results of these analyses.

Processes like QMS (Quality management systems) and EMS (Environmental management systems) consist of series of procedures/elements, among which are operative or working procedures. One of these procedures is control of waste waters from the Aluminium Plant in Podgorica, Montenegro (Serbia&Montenegro). This procedure controls the order of activities, the responsibility, the input and output documents, with the exclusive aim to measure the effects of protection of surface and underground waters and to review the EMS of the company for the waste waters.

The river Crnojevica is a subject of lasting manny years physicochemical and microbiological investigations, which show worring pollutants presence into the water current. This work represent preliminary investigations of Crnojevica river water algal flora (phytoplankton and phytoperiphyton), carrying out over summer period of 2004. Aim of the investigation was to point, based on algal analysis, as reliable indicators of water quality and ecological status of an aquatorius, the need to protect the river from permanent communal and industrial waste water pollution. The hyperproduction of phytoplankton in the investigation period was stated, but it varys along the current, in accordance with efluent inflow. On the base of saprobiological analysis of phytoplankton, determinated water quality was in class 2, till the worse was noted at T2 measure place, on the inflow place of Rijeka Crnojevica settlements sewage.

Some physiological groups of bacteria can be good indicators of the oil pollution of the environment. Oil contamination represents a special problem because of their persistence and possibility of reaching drinking water supply sources. The destruction of the Novi Sad Oil Refinery in the hinterland of water supply source Ratno Ostrvo has endangered drinking water supply of the city of Novi Sad. As an acceptable protection measure appeared the solution with the hydraulic barrier located along the east side of the Refinery, bordering with the water supply source. Physiological groups of bacteria relevant to oil contamination (hydrocarbon-oxidizing and lipolytic bacteria) were detected in the waters of the barrier wells. The appearance and population of this microflora in the water of these wells were more pronounced compared with the waters of a control piezometer in the hinterland of the water supply source.

Potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) is highly sensitive electroanalytical method for determination of traces of heavy metals. In this paper detection limit and linearity of potentiometric stripping analysis for lead was investigated. Method was successfully used for determination of traces of lead ion (detection limit 5 microgram/cubic dm) in stream water of river Ibar, before and after joint of potential pollutant.

In this paper, there were discussed the results of ecological investigation of the Montenerin part of the Adriatic sea during the period 1996-2003. Evaluation of the sea-water quality was done in the coastal sea. The importance of multiannual ecological investigations was emphasized, too.

The aim of this study was to determine the content of heavy metals, cadmium and lead, in drinking water, spring and well water from rural part of south Serbia, as in water of river Jablanica and in the top water. The content of cadmium and lead, a very toxic metals, were studied simulataneously by potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) in water samples using thin mercury film electrode, as a working electrode, by standard addition method in the presence of supporting electrolyte. The results of content of examined heavy metals obtained in examined water samples by PSA method, are compared with results obtained by using AAS and GF-AAS spectrometry.

Wastewater from the Novi Sad Oil Refinery, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro) had been previously discharged to the Danube river between the raw water wells. In order to protect water supply source, the collector discharge was displaced downstream, outside the raw water wells area. In 2004, the quality of Danube river water and sediment was monitored at the sites of the old and new collector discharge of the Oil Refinery wastewaters, as well as at two control (reference) sites. The paper presents chemical quality parameters of water and sediment, characterizing oil contamination. Significantly increased contents of oil contaminant were measured in the Danube river sediment at the old discharge site compared to other sampling points, which is a consequence of many-year accumulation, as well as in the Danube river water at the new discharge site, as a consequence of the present wastewater discharge.
