The heavy metal concentrations of water and shrimp (Penaeus monodon) from Isaka Bundu swamp, Niger Delta were evaluated between January and June 2022. The non-carcinogenic health risk assessment was used to assess the water's suitability for recreation and the shrimps for consumption. Five heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd, Ni, and Zn) were assessed in both media using standard methods and compared with national and international standards. The Chronic daily intake (CDI) for Cd and Cu (in children) exceeded their respective reference doses while hazard quotients (HQs) for Cd and Cu (in children) and all the hazard indices were greater than 1 in the water. All the target hazard quotients (THQs) and total hazard index (THIs) were lower than 1 in the shrimps. The heavy metal concentrations, CDIs, HQ/THQs and HI/THIs were higher in the more impacted stations 1 and 3. Based on the heavy metal concentrations and health risk assessment, the waters of the Isaka Bundu swamp are unsafe for recreational purposes. However, shrimps are safe for human consumption. The high concentrations of heavy metals in the water influenced the concentrations in the shrimps. Anthropogenic activities in the area contributed to the heavy metal concentrations in the environment. The results also showed that the children were more prone to adverse health impacts.

In the eastern region of the Algerian Northern Sahara, the groundwater is the only resource for drinking water supply and irrigation. This study aimed to assess the physical-chemical quality of groundwater with exposition of the fluoride distribution in the eastern region of Algeria taking as case study Ouargla area. The sampling campaign was carried out in such a way to cover the exploited aquifers (Miopliocene and Senonian).  Water temperature, pH, conductivity, hardness, alkalinity, principal ions (Sodium, Potassium Calcium, Magnesium, Bicarbonates, Nitrates, Sulfates, and Chlorides) and the fluoride content in the groundwater were measured and determined. Examination and validation of obtained results were by the use ionic balance method and the hydrochemical analysis by Piper, Stabler and Richards diagrams. The obtained results of our study show that the groundwater of the Ouargla area presents a chlorinated sodium and potassium facies. Moreover, the groundwater quality in the study area is of poor quality; it is hard and characterized by very high mineralization, The Richards' diagram indicates that the groundwater of the study area are unsuitable for irrigation. The spatial distribution of fluoride ions in groundwater of the terminal complex shows that fluoride levels in Ouargla exceed the World Health Organization standard.

Aquatic macroinvertebrates play significant roles in the benthic zone of the aquatic ecosystem and they have different tolerance level to pollution. Globally, macroinvertebrates are usedas bioindicators in determining the ecological health and water quality status of aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, this study focused on the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in River Ugbalo, south-south Nigeria. Macroinvertebrates and physicochemical parameters were sampled in three marked out stations between March 2018 and February 2020. Physicochemical parameters were analyzed following standard procedures, while macroinvertebrates were collected with Kick net and Van Veen grab. Physicochemical parameters showed that the water quality of the three stations sampled were fair considering the values of pH, turbidity, sulphate, nitrate, phosphate, DO, BOD, and EC which were within the World Health Organization and Federal Environmental Protection Agency of Nigeria. Cluster analysis based on Bray- Curtis similarity showed that macroinvertebrates were clustered by stations rather than seasons. A total of 5,580 macroinvertebrates individuals were recorded showing high biodiversity in the river. Diptera was the most abundant Order with 2,488 individuals followed by Odonata with 697 individuals. The least represented Order was Lepidoptera with 13 individuals. The diversity indices showed that Margalef index (5.93), Simpson diversity (0.95), Evenness (0.63), and Shannon-Weiner index (3.30) were highest in Station 1. This research work showed that the water quality of the studied stations was fair and station 3 was the most perturbed station.  We recommend the enactment and enforcement of policies that will lead to aquatic ecosystem restoration.

International audience | Sediment cores from the central Algerian coast were collected to investigate the distribution, sources and risk oftrace metals. The local geochemical background of metals was defined from the core S collected in an uncontaminatedarea of the coast. The anthropogenic inputs in Algiers Bay elevated Ag, Cd, Pb and Zn concentrationsas their maximum were 3.1, 3, 2.1 and 1.8 times the background values, respectively. Meanwhile, increasedcontents of Arsenic (up to 21.1 mg/kg) were detected in all sites. Correlations and PCA suggest that lithogenicsources controlled metal deposition, while most sediment arsenic was agriculture-derived. Organic matter actedas a sink or source for some trace metals. According to EFs, the study area showed slight to moderate enrichmentwith respect to Ag, As, Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu, whereas they remained uncontaminated with Cr, V, Co and Ni. Thisstudy provides a needed baseline for future environmental investigations.

International audience | Rivers are representative of the overall contamination found in their catchment area. Contaminant concentrations in watercourses depend on numerous factors including land use and rainfall events. Globally, in Mediterranean regions, rainstorms are at the origin of fluvial multipollution phenomena as a result of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and floods. Large loads of urban-associated microorganisms, including faecal bacteria, are released from CSOs which place public health - as well as ecosystems - at risk. The impacts of freshwater contamination on river ecosystems have not yet been adequately addressed, as is the case for the release of pollutant mixtures linked to extreme weather events. In this context, microbial communities provide critical ecosystem services as they are the only biological compartment capable of degrading or transforming pollutants. Through the use of 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding of environmental DNA at different seasons and during a flood event in a typical Mediterranean coastal river, we show that the impacts of multipollution phenomena on structural shifts in the particle-attached riverine bacteriome were greater than those of seasonality. Key players were identified via multivariate statistical modelling combined with network module eigengene analysis. These included species highly resistant to pollutants as well as pathogens. Their rapid response to contaminant mixtures makes them ideal candidates as potential early biosignatures of multipollution stress. Multiple resistance gene transfer is likely enhanced with drastic consequences for the environment and human-health, particularly in a scenario of intensification of extreme hydrological events.

Mitigation of pesticide dispersion in soil and water is required to protect ecosystem health and the anthropic uses of water bodies. Biochar amendments have been suggested to reduce pesticide dispersion due to their high sorption potentials. Nevertheless, appraisals at different scales have been limited by the costs of pesticide analyses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of two fluorescent tracers, uranine (UR) and sulforhodamine B (SRB), for use as pesticide proxies in the context of biochar amendments used for mitigation purposes. Therefore, we compared the sorption processes of both fluorescent tracers and those of three pesticides, glyphosate, 2,4-D, and difenoconazole for soils; three wood biochars (pine, oak, and beech/charm blend); and soil/biochar mixtures representing agricultural usages. The results showed that the sorption of glyphosate by soil was unaffected by amendment with the tested pine, oak, and wood blend biochars. In contrast, the sorption coefficients of UR, SRB, 2,4-D, and difenoconazole were significantly increased with these biochar amendments. SRB, in particular, exhibited sorption behavior similar to that of the hydrophobic fungicide difenoconazole. This indicates promise for the use of SRB as a proxy for hydrophobic pesticides, in testing biochar amendments.

Monitoring river plastic pollution is therefore key to quantify, understand and reduce plastics in all aquatic ecosystems. The lack of harmonization between ongoing monitoring efforts compromises the direct comparison and combination of available data. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched guidelines on freshwater plastic monitoring, to provide a starting point for practitioners and scientists towards harmonized data collection, analysis, and reporting. We developed a five-step workflow to support to design effective plastic monitoring strategies. The workflow was applied to three rivers (Rhine, Mekong and Odaw) across relevant gradients, including geography, hydrology, and plastic pollution levels. We show that despite the simplicity of the selected methods and the limited duration of the data collection, our harmonized approach provides crucial insights in the state of plastic pollution in very different river basins globally.

The study aims to understand employees’ knowledge, awareness, and overall perception of drinking water quality in the Iron and Steel Industry in Burnpur, India. Further, this study evaluated drinking water’s physicochemical and bacteriological properties collected from different company sites. This study uses a mixed-method approach with individual interviews of selected employees (n=342) and the laboratory test of eight selected drinking water sites. The results show that most employees considered drinking water acceptable to be excellent. However, only 30% of employees in Site 1 (Coke Oven By-Product department) have reported organoleptic properties of water under the excellent category. The result explained that other physicochemical and bacteriological properties are in good status in all sites except for a colony count, expressing their suitability for drinking purposes. In summary, employees’ perception of water quality aligns with their drinking water’s physicochemical and bacteriological properties.

This study investigated the water quality and the organic pollution level of rivers in Cotabato City, specifically the Rio Grande de Mindanao, Matampay, Esteros, and Tamontaka rivers. The physicochemical characteristics of water in these rivers were determined in the laboratory, and the level of organic pollution was determined using Palmer’s algal pollution index. Water quality assessment showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) in Matampay River and the biological oxygen demand (BOD) in Esteros River exceed the minimum standard set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for water quality in class C rivers. Results also showed that there were thirty (30) algal genera belonging to twelve (12) classes were observed in Cotabato City rivers. Algal genera belonging to Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae were found to be the most abundant in these rivers. Using Palmer’s algal pollution index, the Rio Grande de Mindanao showed a probability of high organic pollution, while the rest of the rivers indicated a lack of organic pollution. For a more thorough assessment of the Cotabato City rivers, it is advisable to consider more comprehensive measures, such as extending the sampling duration and expanding the number of sampling stations.
