peer reviewed | This study analyzed the potential use of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) as a strategy for improving water supply management. This study focused on the Siminehroud Sub-basin due to its high importance to the Basin of Urmia Lake (UL). Siminehroud is the second provider of water (by volume) to Urmia Lake. To evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a PES scheme, the current land use map was extracted using satellite imagery. In addition, the two algorithms of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) are used for Landsat images classification, rather than analyzing the relationship between land use and ecosystem services. Then, the most relevant ecosystem services provided in the region were evaluated using the Benefit Transfer Method. In the last step, by designing and implementing a survey, on the one hand, the local farmers' Willingness to Accept (WTA) cash payments for reducing the area they cultivate, and on the other hand, the farmers' Willingness to Pay (WTP) for managing the water consumption were determined. The results illustrated that the WTA program is more acceptable among the beneficiaries. It is also notable that this program needs very high governmental funding. Furthermore, the results of the program indicate that the land area out of the cultivation cycle will gradually increase while the price of agricultural water will also increase.

The last decade of 20th century in Serbia (Yugoslavia) was marked with economy recession, war surroundings, and finally bombing in the period March-June 1999. Global increment of environmental pollution was one of the catastrophic consequences. War actions caused destroying of big oil refineries and reservoirs, chemical complexes and industrial objects. Afterwards, toxic and carcinogenic substances reached out to atmosphere, soil and hydrographic system. Also, ammunition with depleted uranium was used. Heavy metals are very dangerous, so that, in this paper are presented results of investigation of heavy metals contents in surface soil layers. Heavy metals are movable, by erosion processes, with possibility of reaching hydrographic network and water supply systems. Investigation was carried out at a few localities: Fruska Gora, Ivanovo, Goc and Crni Vrh. Total contents of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn) was determined by AAS (atomic spectrophotometry), by usage "Varian-Spectra AA-10" apparatus.

Spacial Plan of Serbia (Yugoslavia) predicts the concept of water supply, which is based on exploitation of water from surface storages, formed or under construction. Usage of surface storages is profitable if exploitation of water takes place by protected capacity, during predicted period. Useful spaces of storages are endangered by fulfillment with erosional material, especially in hilly-mountainous region. By the way, particles of sediment are the carriers of pollutants from agricultural surfaces and products of wet and dry deposition from the atmosphere. In order to protect storages by fulfillment, primary tasks are decreasing the erosion production and stopping the existing quantities of sediment in the hydrographic system. Data about investments in erosion control works (period 1994-2000) are presented in the paper. It is necessary to increase level of investments, because the territory of Serbia (Yugoslavia) is region of high risk, in the sense of erosional material production.

In this investigation the applied method for lead determination in traces, from 10E-6 - 10E-10 mol/cubic dm, was Potentiometric Stripping Analysis (PSA). The main attribute of this method is possibility to detect very low metal concentrations. The investigation results of level concentration of lead into the top, natural and atmospheric water from some towns of Serbia (Yugoslavia), including city of Belgrade, are given. In this study, an interval two-stage fuzzy fractional programming (TFFP) method is developed to facilitate collaborative governance of economy and water resources. Methods of interval programming, fuzzy programming, two-stage programming, and fractional programming are integrated within a general system optimization framework. The main contribution of TFFP is simultaneously addressing various uncertainties and tackling trade-offs between environmental and economic objectives in the optimized schemes for water resources allocation. A case study of a highly urbanized coastal city (i.e., Shenzhen) in China is provided as an example for demonstrating the proposed approach. According to the results, industrial sectors should receive 34.8% of total water supply, while agricultural sectors should receive 1.5%. For the spatial allocation of water resources, Bao An, Long Gang, and Fu Tian districts should be allocated 21.6%, 20.5%, and 14.8% water to promote the economic development. The discharge analysis indicates that chemical oxygen demand (CODcᵣ) and total phosphorus (TP) would be key pollutants. Moreover, the optimized seawater desalination volume would be negligibly influenced by price, while the upper bounds of desalination would be increased with the raising acceptable credibility levels in the period of 2031–2035. Analysis of desalination prices also reveals that the decision-makers should increase the scale of desalination in the period of 2021–2025. In addition, the effectiveness and applicability of TFFP would be evaluated under economic maximization scenarios. The result showed that the economic maximization scenario could obtain higher economic benefits, but it would be accompanied by a larger number of pollutant discharges. It is expected that this study will provide solid bases for planning water resources management systems in coastal regions.

Steroid estrogens have been detected in oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwaters, soils, and even urban water supply systems, thereby inevitably imposing serious impacts on human health and ecological safety. Indeed, many estrogen-degrading bacterial strains and degradation pathways have been reported, with the 4,5-seco pathway being particularly important. However, few studies have evaluated the use of the 4,5-seco pathway by actinomycetes to degrade 17β-estradiol (E2). In this study, 5 genes involved in E2 degradation were identified in the Rhodococcus equi DSSKP-R-001 (R-001) genome and then heterologously expressed to confirm their functions. The transformation of E2 with hsd17b14 reached 63.7% within 30 h, resulting in transformation into estrone (E1). Furthermore, we found that At1g12200-encoded flavin-binding monooxygenase (FMOAₜ₁g₁₂₂₀₀) can transform E1 at a rate of 51.6% within 30 h and can transform E1 into 4-hydroxyestrone (4-OH E1). In addition, catA and hsaC genes were identified to further transform 4-OH E1 at a rate of 97–99%, and this reaction was accomplished by C–C cleavage at the C4 position of the A ring of 4-OH E1. This study represents the first report on the roles of these genes in estrogen degradation and provides new insights into the mechanisms of microbial estrogen metabolism and a better understanding of E2 degradation via the 4,5-seco pathway by actinomycetes.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in many industries for multiple applications that inevitably release AgNPs into surface water sources. The formation kinetics of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the presence of AgNPs was investigated during chlorination. Experiments were carried out with raw water from a canal in Songkhla, Thailand, which analyzed the formation potential (FP) of trihalomethanes FP (THMFP), iodo-trihalomethanes FP (I-THMFP), haloacetonitriles FP (HANFP), and trichloronitromethane FP. Increased AgNP concentrations by 10–20 mg/L led to a higher specific formation rate of chloroform which is described by zero- and first-order kinetics. The increase in the specific formation of chloroform as increasing chlorine contact time could enhance both the THMFP rates and the maximum THMFP concentrations in all tested AgNPs. The AgNP content did not have a significant influence on I-THMFP and HANFP concentrations or speciation. The I-THMFP and HANFP increased in a short-chlorination time as mostly complete formation <12 h, and then the rate decreased as the reaction proceeded. The levels of THMs and many emerging DBPs are related to the presence of AgNPs in chlorinated water and chlorine reaction time. THMFP had a higher impact on integrated toxic risk value (ITRV) than I-THMFP and HANFP because of the chlorination of water with AgNPs. The chlorine reaction time was more effective for increasing the ITRV of THMFP than the level of AgNPs. Water treatment plants should control the DBPs that cause possible health risks from water consumption by optimizing water distribution time.

Aquatic ecosystems and drinking water supply systems worldwide are increasingly affected by taste and odor episodes. In this study, molecular approaches including next-generation sequencing (NGS) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) were used to study the diversity and dynamics of cyanobacteria and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB)-producing cyanobacteria in Yuqiao Reservoir, a eutrophicated drinking water reservoir in Tianjin city, northern China. NGS revealed that the entire cyanobacterial community consisted of 16 genera, with Planktothrix (28.8%), Pseudanabaena (18.4%), Cylindrospermosis (7.8%), and Microcystis (7.6%) being the dominant genera, while microscopic examination identified only eight cyanobacterial genera. NGS of the 2-MIB synthesis gene revealed that Pseudanabaena and Planktothricoides were the main 2-MIB producers, with Pseudanabaena being dominant. This finding demonstrated that NGS can identify 2-MIB producers quickly and accurately and it can thus play an important role in the practical monitoring of aquatic ecology. The qPCR test showed 2-MIB synthesis gene with 4.27 × 10⁶ copies/L to 2.24 × 10⁹copies/L occurring at the three sampling sites. The mic gene copy number increased before the 2-MIB concentration increased, indicating that forecasting role in dealing with the 2-MIB concentration by gene copy number. Predicting 2-MIB by qPCR in the field must be verified with additional studies. The combination of NGS and qPCR can be an even more comprehensive method to provide early warning information to managers of reservoirs and water utilities facing taste and odor incidents. This is the first amplicon NGS dataset based on 2-MIB gene to study the diversity and dynamics of 2-MIB-producing cyanobacteria.

Aquatic pollution from emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) is of key environmental importance in India and globally, particularly due to concerns of antimicrobial resistance, ecotoxicity and drinking water supply vulnerability. Here, using a broad screening approach, we characterize the composition and distribution of EOCs in groundwater in the Gangetic Plain around Patna (Bihar), as an exemplar of a rapidly developing urban area in northern India. A total of 73 EOCs were detected in 51 samples, typically at ng.L⁻¹ to low μg.L⁻¹ concentrations, relating to medical and veterinary, agrochemical, industrial and lifestyle usage. Concentrations were often dominated by the lifestyle chemical and artificial sweetener sucralose. Seventeen identified EOCs are flagged as priority compounds by the European Commission, World Health Organisation and/or World Organisation for Animal Health: namely, herbicides diuron and atrazine; insecticides imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and acetamiprid; the surfactant perfluorooctane sulfonate (and related perfluorobutane sulfonate, perfluorohexane sulfonate, perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluoropentane sulfonate); and medical/veterinary compounds sulfamethoxazole, sulfanilamide, dapson, sulfathiazole, sulfamethazine and diclofenac. The spatial distribution of EOCs varies widely, with concentrations declining with depth, consistent with a strong dominant vertical flow control. Groundwater EOC concentrations in Patna were found to peak within ∼10 km distance from the River Ganges, indicating mainly urban inputs with some local pollution hotspots. A heterogeneous relationship between EOCs and population density likely reflects confounding factors including varying input types and controls (e.g. spatial, temporal), wastewater treatment infrastructure and groundwater abstraction. Strong seasonal agreement in EOC concentrations was observed. Co-existence of limited transformation products with associated parent compounds indicate active microbial degradation processes. This study characterizes key controls on the distribution of groundwater EOCs across the urban to rural transition near Patna, as a rapidly developing Indian city, and contributes to the wider understanding of the vulnerability of shallow groundwater to surface-derived contamination in similar environments.

Land use/Land cover (LULC) associated with Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp. quantification and distribution can provide identification of the environmental circulation patterns of these parasites. The aim of this research was to relate the occurrence and circulation of these parasites to the LULC watershed with poor sanitation infrastructure and livestock as important economic activity. The study involved 11 municipalities in the state of São Paulo, located in southeastern Brazil. Sampling was carried out at the catchment sites of each water supply on a monthly basis, starting in December 2014 and lasting until November 2015, totalizing 128 samples. Protozoans were quantified according to the 1623.1 US. EPA Method. For watershed delimitation, the hydrographic network was extracted from the hydrology tool of ArcGIS 10.1. The frequency of occurrence of these pathogens and the high concentrations were evidenced in the municipality with the largest urban area (16.2%) and intense livestock activity (39%) near the catchment site. The municipality that showed the lowest frequency of occurrence presented the smallest urban area (0.87%) and absence of livestock activity near the catchment site. The high concentration of pathogens suggests a correlation between the impact on water supply networks and river basin degradation caused by urban activity and livestock.
