Evaluating real-world emissions of light-duty gasoline vehicles with deactivated three-way catalyst converters

Three-way catalyst (TWC) converter is one of the most important after-treatment device for modern light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs), which can efficiently control exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), total hydrocarbons (THC) and nitrogen oxides (NOX). Nevertheless, a considerable part of in-use taxis in Beijing would operate with TWC purposely removed, which have been indicated by vehicular on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems. In light of high vehicle-use intensity for taxis, we recruited three China 4 non-TWC taxis and three China 4 normal taxis in a comparative experimental test by using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS). The results indicated that non-TWC taxis emitted significantly higher emissions of air pollutants than normal taxis with TWC functioning. For example, average emission factors of non-TWC vehicles were comparable to emission levels of China 1 LDGVs measured in previous studies. By contrast, emissions from normal China 4 taxis were all below China 4 emission limits. Furthermore, an operating mode binning method and a micro-trip approach have been employed to link vehicle emissions with driving conditions. For non-TWC taxis, we identified strong correlations of all pollutant categories between emission factors and average speed. However, such correlations for normal taxis were less strong, in particular for CO and THC emissions that were hardly sensitive to speed changes. This phenomenon indicates that the role of traffic conditions in affecting real-world emissions would become weaker when TWC can effectively mitigate emissions. This paper highlights the importance of in-use emission inspection to avoid any “high emitters” that have violated regulation enforcement.

A conceptual model was constructed for the functioning the algae-dominated rocky reef ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea. The Ecosystem-Based Quality Index (reef-EBQI) is based upon this model. This index meets the objectives of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. It is based upon (i) the weighting of each compartment, according to its importance in the functioning of the ecosystem; (ii) biological parameters assessing the state of each compartment; (iii) the aggregation of these parameters, assessing the quality of the ecosystem functioning, for each site; (iv) and a Confidence Index measuring the reliability of the index, for each site. The reef-EBQI was used at 40 sites in the northwestern Mediterranean. It constitutes an efficient tool, because it is based upon a wide set of functional compartments, rather than upon just a few species; it is easy and inexpensive to implement, robust and not redundant with regard to already existing indices.

Dissolved trace element concentrations (Ba, Fe, Mn, Si, Sr, and Zn) were investigated in the Haicheng River near to the Liaodong Bay in Northeast China during 2010. Dissolved Ba, Fe, Mn, and Sr showed significant spatial variation, whereas dissolved Fe, Mn, and Zn displayed seasonal variations. Conditions such as water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen were found to have an important impact on redox reactions involving dissolved Ba, Fe, and Zn. Dissolved Fe and Mn concentrations were regulated by adsorption or desorption of Fe/Mn oxyhydroxides and the effects of organic carbon complexation on dissolved Ba and Sr were found to be significant. The sources of dissolved trace elements were found to be mainly from domestic sewage, industrial waste, agricultural surface runoff, and natural origin, with estimated seasonal and annual river fluxes established as important inputs of dissolved trace elements from the Haicheng River into the Liaodong Bay or Bohai Sea.

The Arctic is considered a pristine environment, where pollution mainly originates from global sources. The present study examines particle number concentrations (PNCs) and the main sources of airborne ultrafine particles (UFPs, d < 100 nm) in the town Sisimiut and two nearby settlements, Sarfannguit and Itilleq, in West Greenland. Measurements were carried out during three weeks in April and May 2016. Air temperatures during the measurements ranged from −4.4 to +8.7 °C. A portable condensation particle counter (P-Trak) was used for the measurements. Results showed that the lowest concentrations were found during days with high wind speeds, with the lowest PNC average of 72 ± 11 cm−3 (n = 9) (12 m/s). Background concentrations were usually low compared to more densely populated countries, with a couple of exceptions, where there was no clear cause for elevated PNCs in a background area East of Sisimiut. Measured PNCs in the flue gas in the waste incineration plant in Sisimiut showed up to 334,976 cm−3 and are expected to be higher in the gas after it is released through the chimney. Average PNCs up to 77,009 ± 43,880 cm−3 (n = 26) were measured by a road located by the harbor in Sisimiut, while subsequent measurements at the same location showed much lower PNCs. The presence of heavy machinery elevated PNCs highly during two measurement events, giving PNCs up to 270,993 cm−3 but dropping to 1180 cm−3 10 min later, after the vehicle had passed by. A measurement event in Sisimiut Airport while an aircraft landed and departed showed an average PNC of 44,741 ± 85,094 cm−3 (n = 21). Two 24-h measurements resulted in average PNCs of 2960 ± 5704 cm−3 and 3935 ± 10,016 cm−3 respectively.

Plastic pollution in the world's oceans has received much attention, but there has been increasing concern about the high concentrations of plastic debris in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Using census data and methodologies used to study ocean debris we derive a first estimate of 9887 metric tonnes per year of plastic debris entering the Great Lakes. These estimates are translated into population-dependent particle inputs which are advected using currents from a hydrodynamic model to map the spatial distribution of plastic debris in the Great Lakes. Model results compare favorably with previously published sampling data. The samples are used to calibrate the model to derive surface microplastic mass estimates of 0.0211 metric tonnes in Lake Superior, 1.44 metric tonnes in Huron, and 4.41 metric tonnes in Erie. These results have many applications, including informing cleanup efforts, helping target pollution prevention, and understanding the inter-state or international flows of plastic pollution.

Metal concentrations (Al, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb), grain size, and total organic carbon content in 29 surface sediment samples from the nearshore area off Calicut were analyzed to determine their distribution and pollution status. Surface sediments were dominantly silts with low percentage of clay and sand at nearshore and offshore areas. The mean metal concentrations were in the following order: Cr>Ni>Zn>Pb>Cu. The enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index of metals suggest that the surface sediments were not polluted by Zn and moderately polluted by Cu and Ni. By contrast, Cr and Pb showed significant enrichment levels. Results from a multivariate statistical analysis suggested that the spatial enrichment of these heavy metals was related to sediment type. Thus, the sediment distribution and their metal enrichment were mainly controlled by local hydrodynamic conditions that caused the winnowing of fine-grained sediments.

Understanding the mental constructs underlying people's social responses, decisions and behaviors is crucial to defining the governance challenges faced in dealing with marine anthropogenic litter. Using interactive governance theory, this study provides qualitative insights into how a small group of Arab-Israeli artisanal fishermen perceive marine litter and its impact (system to be governed) in the context of the socio-institutional structures (governing system) which manage waste and aim to protect the surrounding environment. It demonstrates that, until the relationships between local people and the various governing institutions are transformed, there is little hope for citizen cooperation in reducing marine litter long-term in the case-study site. More generally, underlying narratives and politics playing out at a local level need to be understood in order to identify which interventions are likely to be effective and which are not. An intervention checklist to assess the potential effectiveness of a marine litter intervention is proposed.

A Before/During/After Control-Impact approach is used to assess the effects of Port 2000 on the suprabenthos in the North Channel (NC) of the Seine estuary during the period from September 2001 to October 2015. Since the beginning of Port 2000 construction (2002–2005), the NC is affected by an increase of salinity (marine influence) and input of sand. The suprabenthos changes are mainly characterised by an increase in species richness in the upper part of the NC and a decrease in species density and biomass of the dominant mysid species over time. Multiple stressors (natural and anthropogenic) have been operating simultaneously (hydrological changes, construction of Port 2000, supplementary dredging) rendering the interpretation of the biological changes difficult. Thus, the present results evidenced a combination of changes in the Seine Estuary not only attributed to the impact of the Port 2000 construction.

Atmospheric dry deposition is a major pathway of pollutants removal from the atmosphere to the water and soil ecosystem. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Taiyuan, China, are one class of the most hazardous air pollutants due to the high emission intensity from coal consumption. To better understand the PAHs removing from the atmosphere, 16 USEPA priority PAHs (except for naphthalene) in the particle dry deposition samples were detected from August 2013 to November 2014 at an urban site in Taiyuan. Dry deposition fluxes of particles were estimated as 157.44–358.17 mg/(m2·d), with the highest value in spring and lowest in autumn. Particle dry deposition fluxes of ∑15-PAHs ranged from 2436.20 to 14,967.36 ng/(m2·d), and was the highest in winter and lowest in summer. Higher PAHs particle dry deposition fluxes were related to higher PAHs emission, lower air temperature, less precipitation as well as wind speed. Overall dry deposition velocities of 15-PAHs were 0.056 ± 0.027 cm/s in winter and 0.42 ± 0.050 cm/s in summer, respectively, and high molecular weight PAHs showed low dry deposition velocities. Positive matrix factorization model's results indicated that coking, vehicle exhaust, coal combustion were the primary PAHs sources in particle dry deposition samples, accounting for 18.64%, 26.54% and 54.82% of total PAHs, respectively. The toxic equivalent concentrations (BaPeq) of ∑15-PAHs in particle dry deposition samples was in the range of 0.69–2.94 μg/g, which might be a good explanation to high soil PAHs concentrations reported in Shanxi province, China. Furthermore, this work could prove the significance of coal combustion, and related pollution control works are needed to conduct to alleviate the PAHs pollution situation.

In 2010 an oil terminal next to nature reservation Saliña Goto (Bonaire) caught fire. Firefighting resulted in elevated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in the salt lake. Within months flamingo abundance in Goto dropped to near complete absence. After statistical analysis, rainfall was deemed an unlikely cause for this decline. Toxicological effects on abundance of prey are likely the main cause for the flamingo absence. This reduced PFAS exposure via food and thus risk towards flamingos during the first years after the fires. Although the sediment is still polluted with persistent PFAS, flamingos returned, and started to feed on organisms with PFAS levels that exceed safety thresholds, placing the birds and other wildlife at risk. Monitoring bird populations is advised to assess potential toxic effects on birds and their offspring. This case suggests that applying persistent chemicals to reduce incident impacts may be more harmful than the incident itself.
