Determining broad scale associations between air pollutants and urban forestry: A novel multifaceted methodological approach Full text

Global urbanisation has resulted in population densification, which is associated with increased air pollution, mainly from anthropogenic sources. One of the systems proposed to mitigate urban air pollution is urban forestry. This study quantified the spatial associations between concentrations of CO, NO₂, SO₂, and PM₁₀ and urban forestry, whilst correcting for anthropogenic sources and sinks, thus explicitly testing the hypothesis that urban forestry is spatially associated with reduced air pollution on a city scale. A Land Use Regression (LUR) model was constructed by combining air pollutant concentrations with environmental variables, such as land cover type and use, to develop predictive models for air pollutant concentrations. Traffic density and industrial air pollutant emissions were added to the model as covariables to permit testing of the main effects after correcting for these air pollutant sources. It was found that the concentrations of all air pollutants were negatively correlated with tree canopy cover and positively correlated with dwelling density, population density and traffic count. The LUR models enabled the establishment of a statistically significant spatial relationship between urban forestry and air pollution mitigation. These findings further demonstrate the spatial relationships between urban forestry and reduced air pollution on a city-wide scale, and could be of value in developing planning policies focused on urban greening.

Mesoporous nanocomposite of MgFe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized using facile sonication method. Its potential was tested for the removal of Ni (II) and Pb (II) ions from water. The 2:1 w/w ratio of MgFe₂O₄:GO was optimum for the maximum removal of metal ions. Nanocomposite was characterized employing XRD, FT-IR, VSM, SEM-EDX, XPS, TEM and BET analyses. It possessed higher surface area (63.0 m² g⁻¹) than pristine NPs. Batch experiments were performed to study the effect of process parameters viz. pH, dose, contact time, initial metal ion concentration, co-existing ions and temperature. Statistical parameters were also determined. Langmuir, Temkin and Freundlich models were followed in perfect way. Langmuir model showed the monolayer adsorption of metal ions onto the homogeneous surface of nanocomposite with maximum adsorption capacity of 100.0 mg g⁻¹ and 143.0 mg g⁻¹ for Ni (II) and Pb (II) ions respectively, which was higher than the same for MgFe₂O₄ NPs and GO. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the pseudo-second order model well described the adsorption process. The ΔS° and ΔG° values revealed spontaneous nature of adsorption process. Positive ΔH° values using MgFe₂O₄ NPs and nanocomposite indicated endothermic removal; whereas using GO the removal was exothermic. The observed trend for coexisting ions correlated with hydrated ion radii. Efficiency of the adsorbents was also tested for realistic nickel electroplating industrial effluent. Apart from the higher adsorption potential of nanofabricated composite, its magnetic properties are advantageous in utilizing metal loaded nanocomposite for adsorption-desorption cycles for reuse.

Inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis of airborne particulate bound mercury was carried out utilizing a high sulfur containing organic compound as a preservation agent to limit the negative bias that affects the determination of low levels of mercury. Between 600% and 1000% more Hg was detected with the use of the additive, lithium tetrathiafulvalene carboxylate (LiCTTF), during the microwave assisted acid digestion sample processing step without influencing the determination of other trace elements. The average Hg concentration was 0.05 ng m⁻³ and 0.4 ng m⁻³ in the absence and presence of LiCTTF, respectively. Stabilization of the mercury ions with the preservation agent resulted in higher precision for ICP-MS measurements with relative standard deviation (RSD) values ranging from 1.07% to 4.36%. The results obtained in this study emphasize the necessity of using a preservation agent in the atomic spectroscopic determination of mercury to prevent losses and is especially critical in low-level analyses such as those routinely performed in environmental mercury pollution trend assessments.

Indoor air contributes significantly to overall exposure, particularly for rural Chinese who often use solid fuels for cooking and/or heating. Unfortunately, overlooked rural indoor air leads to a critical knowledge gap. Simultaneous measurements in the kitchen, living room, and immediately outside of houses using six-channel particle counters were carried out in 18 biomass-burning rural and 3 non-biomass-burning urban households (as a comparison) in winter to characterize dynamic change patterns indoor air pollution and indoor-outdoor relationship. The rural households mainly used wood or crop residues for cooking and heating, while the urban households used pipelined natural gas for cooking and air conditioners for heating. In rural households with significant solid-fuel burning internal sources, the highest concentration was found in the kitchen (101 ± 56 μg/m³), with comparable levels in the living room (99 ± 46 μg/m³) and low levels in outdoor air (91 ± 39 μg/m³). A generally opposite direction of indoor-outdoor exchange was found between the rural and urban households. PM in kitchen air is smaller than that in living rooms and outdoors because solid fuel burning (mainly in rural households) and cooking oil heating (in rural and urban households). Indoor and outdoor PM concentration changed synchronously, with a slight delay in indoor air in urban households but a slight delay in outdoor air in rural households. Cooking, heating, and smoking elevated indoor PM significantly, but different from the cooking activity that produced peaks lasting for about 30 min, emissions from heating created a series of peaks due to frequent disturbance and fuel-feeding and had more significant impacts on the daily average concentration. Distinct indoor-outdoor relationships and dynamic change patterns between the two household categories w/o strong internal biomass burning sources imply that totally different model schemes are needed to quantitatively address indoor air pollution and inhalation exposure.

Olive mill wastewaters (OMW) discharging in river ecosystems cause significant adverse effects on their water chemistry and biological communities. We here examined the effects of OMW loads in four streams of a Mediterranean basin characterized by changing flow. The diatom and macroinvertebrate community structures were compared between upstream (control) and downstream (impacted) sites receiving OMW discharge. We also tested if effects occurred at the organism level, i.e. the occurrence of deformities in diatom valves, and the sediment toxicity on the midge Chironomus riparius. We evaluated these effects through a two-year analysis, at various levels of chemical pollution and dilution capacity. The impacted sites had high phenol concentrations and organic carbon loads during and after olive mill (OM) operation, and were characterized by higher abundances of pollution-tolerant diatom and macroinvertebrate taxa. Diatom valve deformities occurred more frequently at the impacted sites. The development of C. riparius was affected by phenolic compounds and organic carbon concentrations in the sediments. The similarity in the diatom and macroinvertebrate assemblages between control and impacted sites decreased at lower flows. Diatoms were more sensitive in detecting deterioration in the biological status of OMW receiving waterways than macroinvertebrates. Our results indicate that the negative effects of OMW extended to the whole benthic community, at both assemblage and organism level.

The interpretation of biomarkers in natura should be based on a referential of expected values in uncontaminated conditions. Nevertheless, to build a reference data set of biomarker responses in estuarine areas, which receive chronic pollution loads due to their transition position between continent and sea, is impossible. In this context, the aim of the present work was to propose the use of laboratory recovery period to define a baseline for the measurement of sperm DNA damage by Comet assay in the estuarine prawn Palaemon longirostris. For that, sperm DNA integrity was observed after both a passive (i.e. 20 days in a clean environment) and an active (i.e. forced renewal of spermatophores) recovery of wild P. longirostris specimens from the Seine estuary, in laboratory conditions. Then, the levels of sperm DNA damage recorded within the P. longirostris population of the Seine estuary, during six campaigns of sampling from April 2015 to October 2017, have been interpreted according to the defined threshold values. The results showed a persistence in the level of DNA damage after 20-day in clean environment with the passive recovery. This strategy was inconclusive to reach a baseline level but it revealed the lack of DNA repair mechanisms. For the active recovery, a decrease of 54% of the level of DNA damage has been observed after the first renewal of spermatophores and this level stabilized after the second renewal. On the basis of this second strategy, we defined a mean basal value of sperm DNA damage of 54.9 A.U. and a maximum threshold of 69.7 A.U. (i.e. 95 %CI). The analysis of the results using the reference value highlighted significant abnormal sperm DNA damage within the native population of P. longirostris from the Seine estuary on all stations during the six-sampling campaigns.

Due to increased use of agrochemicals and growing concerns about ecotoxicology, the development of new insecticides, moving away from those with neurotoxic and broad spectrum effects towards insecticides that are safer for the environment and nontarget beneficial species, has been a research priority. Novaluron stands out among these newer insecticides, is an insect growth regulator that is used for the control of insect pests in crops grown close to mulberry plantations. Mulberry serves as food for the silkworm Bombyx mori, which is a nontarget insect of great economic importance to silk production. We investigated the lethal and sublethal effects of Novaluron on the development of B. mori. Larvae were segregated into experimental groups: the control groups (CGs) and the treatment groups (TGs), which were treated with the Novaluron concentration of 0.15 mL/L. Following exposure, we analyzed: larval mortality, changes in the insect life cicle and cytotoxic effects on the midgut cells. This is the first report about the Novaluron’s effects on B.mori. We detected rupture in the integument, complete cessation of feeding, late development, incomplete ecdysis and production of defective cocoons. After 240 h of exposure, there was 100% mortality in TG larvae exposed in the 3rd instar and 20% mortality from larvae exposed in the 5th instar. Cytotoxic effects was observed, such as dilation of cells, emission of cytoplasmic protrusions, extreme rarefaction of the cytoplasm and nuclei, dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum in addition to changes in mitochondria, the presence of large digestive vacuoles and intercellular spaces and the presence of active caspase. Novaluron exposure impairs the midgut and may affect the physiological functions of this organ. Novaluron additionally compromises several phases of insect development, indicating the importance of toxicology studies that utilize different life stages of nontarget species to evaluate the safe use of insecticides.

There is a growing interest in the occurrence and sources of pharmaceutical substances in the environment. This paper reports the first detailed transect of pharmaceutical occurrence along the River Thames, UK, from source to sea, undertaken during a period of high flow in 2016. In 37 samples a total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 2 lifestyle compounds (cocaine and sucralose) were detected. Total concentration of pharmaceuticals ranged from 0.0012 μg/l to 10.24 μg/l with a median of 2.6 μg/l. Sucralose concentrations varied from <0.01 to 5.9 μg/l with a median concentration of 1.93 μg/l and was detected in every sample except the groundwater-dominated sources of the Thames. Antimicrobials, including those on the surface water watch list (erythromycin, clarithromycin and azithromycin) were detected in every site downstream of the Thames source. Diclofenac, recently on the surface water watch list, was detected in 97% of Thames samples and above the proposed EQS of 0.1 μg/l in 12 samples. Distinct increases in concentration and number of pharmaceuticals were found downstream of the Oxford, Mogdon and Hogsmill wastewater treatment works (WWTW) but were more subdued downstream of the Crossness and Beckton WWTW due to the tidal nature of the Thames and combined sewer outflows. Sucralose was found to be an excellent tracer of wastewaters (treated and untreated) and can be used as a proxy for many pharmaceuticals. Paracetamol and ibuprofen were tracers of untreated wastewater inputs to the Thames due to their high biodegradation within WWTWs.

The ecological impacts of insecticides in aquatic areas around agricultural lands have long been ignored in the regulation scheme of pesticides in Japan. Upon the scheme, the predicted concentration of an insecticide in the main stream of a river is the only parameter considered, suggesting that the ecological impacts of insecticides on local biodiversity around agricultural fields are underestimated. To fill this knowledge gap, we measured insecticide concentrations in surface water and sediment in aquatic areas around paddy fields at 35 locations across Japan. Among the 18 insecticides considered, 15 were detected somewhere in Japan and their concentrations were generally higher in the southwestern region in Japan (e.g. Hiroshima, Saga, or Kagoshima prefectures). Most insecticides were accumulated at higher concentrations in sediment than in surface water, consistent with previous studies. We also detected insecticides applied to nursery boxes at high concentrations in surrounding aquatic areas, although such application is generally considered to have low environmental risks. In addition, derivatives of fipronil, which have similar toxicity as that of fipronil, were often detected in sediment at higher concentrations than fipronil itself. Concentrations of dinotefuran in water at two sampling points were higher than the 5% hazardous concentration (HC5), indicating a possibility of a risk of acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Our findings indicate that ecological risk assessments of insecticides and their derivatives should be expanded to include concentrations in sediment and water around paddy fields as well.

The study of aerosol dispersion characteristics in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has attracted extensive attention. Oxidation ditch (OD) is a commonly implemented process during biological wastewater treatment. This study assessed the component characteristics, source apportionment, and exposure risks of aerosols generated from a WWTP using the OD process (AWO). The results indicated that the aeration part of oxidation ditch (ODA) exhibited the highest concentrations and proportions of the respiratory fractions (RF) of bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Some pathogenic or opportunistic-pathogenic bacteria and carcinogenic metal(loid)s were detected in the AWO. The source apportionment results indicated that the outdoor wastewater treatment processes and ambient air contributed to the constitution of the AWO. The indoor aerosols were mainly constituted by composition of the wastewater treatment process such as the sludge dewatering room (SDR). The pathogenic or opportunistic-pathogenic bacteria with eight genera (Colinsella, Dermatophilus, Enterobactor, Erycherichia-Shigella, Ledionella, Selenomonas, Xanthobacter, and Veillonella) were largely attributed to wastewater or sludge. The risk assessment suggested that inhalation was the main exposure pathway for aerosols (including bacteria and metal(loid)s). Additionally, As indicated the highest non-carcinogenic risks. Furthermore, As, Cd, and Co were associated with high carcinogenic risks. The ODA and sludge dewatering room (SDR) indicated the highest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of metal(loid)s, respectively. Thus, the AWO should be sufficiently researched and monitored to mitigate their harmful effects on human health, particularly with regard to the health of the site workers.
