By the year 2050, it is estimated that the demand for palm oil is expected to reach an enormous amount of 240 Mt. With a huge demand in the future for palm oil, it is expected that oil palm by-products will rise with the increasing demand. This represents a golden opportunity for sustainable biohydrogen production using oil palm biomass and palm oil mill effluent (POME) as the renewable feedstock. Among the different biological methods for biohydrogen production, dark fermentation and photo-fermentation have been widely studied for their potential to produce biohydrogen by using various waste materials as feedstock, including POME and oil palm biomass. However, the complex structure of oil palm biomass and POME, such as the lignocellulosic composition, limits fermentable substrate available for conversion to biohydrogen. Therefore, proper pre-treatment and suitable process conditions are crucial for effective biohydrogen generation from these feedstocks. In this review, the characteristics of palm oil industrial waste, the process used for biohydrogen production using palm oil industrial waste, their pros and cons, and the influence of various factors have been discussed, as well as a comparison between studies in terms of types of reactors, pre-treatment strategies, the microbial culture used, and optimum operating condition have been presented. Through biological production, hydrogen production rates up to 52 L-H₂/L-medium/h and 6 L-H₂/L-medium/h for solid and liquid palm oil industrial waste, respectively, can be achieved. In short, the continuous supply of palm oil production by-product and relatively, the low cost of the biological method for hydrogen production indicates the potential source of renewable energy.

Plastic in the environment is considered an emerging pollutant of global concern. In spite of intensive research, many questions remain open, such as the processes that drive the deposition and remobilization of plastic debris on river beaches. The objectives of this study were: i) to analyze the influence of the natural hydrological fluctuations and wind intensity on the distribution of mesoplastic (0.5–2.5 cm) and macroplastic (>2.5 cm) debris in beach sediments of a large river, ii) to describe the type of plastic debris found and iii) to explore potential relations between the number of items and weight of macro- and mesoplastics. Our results suggest that, during lowering water levels, flow removes the plastic debris and transports it further downstream. Conversely, when the beach sediments remain exposed during long periods, the plastic debris accumulates considerably. Nevertheless, the influence of wind intensity on plastic debris transport was comparatively negligible. In other words, in our study the water flow had a greater capacity to remobilize and transport plastic debris than the wind. The most abundant mesoplastic items were foam, hard plastic, film and small fragments of fishing line. The dominant macroplastic items recorded were pieces of fishing line (nylon) and cigarette filters (cellulose acetate), typically discarded by beach users. Other items found in large quantities were soft packaging elements (expanded polystyrene), hard plastic containers (polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate) and beverage bottles (polyethylene terephthalate), typical items of domestic use in the Paraná River region. Finally, we found that the density of macroplastic items is highly correlated to the density of mesoplastic items, serving as surrogate for further estimations. Our results could help to develop better mitigation strategies in seasonal riverscapes, based on the influence of the hydrological cycle and the characteristics of the most abundant meso- and macroplastics.

Among emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), triclosan (TCS) is an antibacterial agent and frequently detected in sludge. In this study, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to obtain the first transcriptomic profile of tobacco with TCS treatment in comparison with control. The results of transcriptome profiling indicated that salicylic acid (SA) signalling pathway actively participated in the tobacco’s response to TCS treatment. The accumulation of endogenous SA in transgene tobacco lines transformed with a homologous gene of SA binding protein (LcSABP) was significantly enhanced. The resistance of transgenic tobacco lines to TCS was markedly enhanced revealed by morphological and physiological indexes while the total Chl level and Pₙ of transgenic individuals showed about 180% and 250% higher than that of WT on average, and the accumulation of H₂O₂ and O₂⁻ induced by TCS in SABP overexpressing tobacco was 35.3%–37.3% and 53.0%–56.0% lower than that of WT. In order to further explore the mechanism of TCS tolerance in transgenic plants, RNA-seq was then performed to obtain the second transcriptomic profile between wild type and transgenic samples with TCS exposure. The results indicated that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were most highly enriched in MAPK signalling pathway, amino acid synthesis pathway and plant hormone transduction pathway. Especially, genes encoding key proteins such as cytochrome P450, laccase, peroxidase, glycosyl transferase, glutathione S-transferase and ATP-binding cassette were considered to be related to the increased tolerance ability of transgenic tobacco to the treatment of TCS stress. This research will likely provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of SA-mediated amelioration of TCS stress on tobacco.

Traffic source–dominated volatile organic compound (VOC) samples were collected during four time-intervals in a day (Ⅰ: 7:30–10:30, Ⅱ: 11:00–14:00, Ⅲ: 16:30–19:30, and Ⅳ: 20:00–23:00) in a tunnel in summer, 2019, in Xi’an, China. The total measured VOC (TVOC) in periods Ⅰ and Ⅲ (rush hours, 107.2 ± 8.2 parts per billion by volume [ppbv]) was 1.8 times that in periods Ⅱ and Ⅳ (non-rush hours, 58.6 ± 13.8 ppbv), consistent with the variation in vehicle numbers in the tunnel. The considerably elevated ethane and ethylbenzene levels could have been attributed to emissions from compressed natural gas vehicles and the rapid development of methanol-fueled taxis in Xi’an in 2019. The mixing ratios of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) contributed 9.4%–12.7% to TVOCs, and the contributions were nearly 40% higher in periods Ⅰ and Ⅲ than in Ⅱ and Ⅳ, indicating that BTEX levels were strongly affected by vehicle emissions. The indicators of motor vehicle emission, namely ethylene, propylene, toluene, m/p-xylenes, o-xylene, and propane, contributed to more than half of the ozone formation potential in this study. The noncarcinogenic risks of VOCs in this study were within the international safety standard, whereas the carcinogenic risks exceeded the standard by 2.3–4.6 times, suggesting that carcinogenic risks were more serious than noncarcinogenic risks. VOCs presented 2.2 and 1.4 times noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks during rush hours than during non-rush hours, respectively. Notably, the carcinogenic risk in period Ⅳ was comparable with that in period Ⅲ; however, the vehicle numbers and VOC mixing ratios were the lowest at night, which may have attributed to the increasing number and proportion of methanol M100-fueled vehicles in the tunnel. Therefore, VOCs emitted by new energy vehicles should also be seriously considered while evaluating fossil fuel vehicle emissions.

Parabens (PBs) are widely used as preservatives in food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PCPs). Due to their potential characteristics, similar to endocrine-disrupting compounds, their safety in our daily products and frequent exposure to human health have become public concerns. Nevertheless, little information is available about the occurrence of PBs in outdoor environments and their implications for human exposure. In this study, seven pairs of gas- and particle-phase air samples and 48 soil samples from Harbin City, China, were collected for the analysis of eight typical PBs (including methyl-paraben, ethyl-paraben, propyl-paraben, isopropyl-paraben, butyl-paraben, isobutyl-paraben, benzyl-paraben, and heptyl-paraben), which have been frequently selected as target compounds in previous studies. Concentrations of ∑₈PBs in outdoor air samples were 253–1540 pg/m³ with a median of 555 pg/m³. The results of the gas-particle partitioning indicated that PBs had not reached equilibrium between the gas phase and particle phase. Concentrations of ∑₈PBs in the soil samples were <LOQ-5530 ng/kg dw. Higher concentrations of PBs were observed in soils from commercial and residential areas with extensive anthropogenic activities. Based on the inhalation rate of air and ingestion rate of soil, the estimated daily intake (EDI) was calculated. The EDI values (EDIₐᵢᵣ + EDIₛₒᵢₗ) for male adults, female adults and children were comparable, with mean values of 2.74 × 10⁻², 3.21 × 10⁻² and 2.70 × 10⁻² ng/kg-bw/day, respectively. All EDIs were much lower than the daily acceptable intake, indicating lower health risk with PB occurrence in outdoor environments. Finally, the total EDI from all external exposure routes (outdoor air, indoor air, soil, indoor dust, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and PCPs) was calculated for the first time. The total EDI was not consistent with that of the internal exposure, which provided new insight into future studies for human exposure assessment.

A green approach using hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to intensify the fuel properties of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) through torrefaction is developed in this study to minimize environmental pollution. Meanwhile, a neural network (NN) is used to minimize bulk density at different combinations of operating conditions to show the accurate and reliable model of NN (R² = 0.9994). The biochar produced from SCGs torrefied at temperatures of 200–300 °C, duration of 30–60 min, and H₂O₂ concentrations of 0–100 wt% is examined. The results reveal that the higher heating value (HHV) of biochar increases with rising temperature, duration, or H₂O₂ concentration, whereas the bulk density has an opposite trend. The HHV, ignition temperature, and bulk density of biochar from torrefaction at 230 °C for 30 min with a 100 wt% H₂O₂ solution (230-100%-TSCG) are 27.00 MJ∙kg⁻¹, 292 °C, and 120 kg∙m⁻³, respectively. This HHV accounts for a 29% improvement compared to that of untorrefied SCG. The contact angle (126°), water activity (0.51 aw), and moisture content (7.69%) of the optimized biochar indicate that it has higher resistance against biodegradation, and thereby can be stored longer. Overall, H₂O₂ is a green treatment additive for SCGs solid fuel. This study has successfully produced biochar with greater HHV and low bulk density at low temperatures. The green additive development can effectively reduce environmental pollutants and upgrade wastes into resources, and achieve “3E”, namely, environmental (non-polluting green additives), energy (biofuel), and circular economy (waste upgrade). In addition, the produced biochar has great potential in the fields of bioadsorbents and soil amendments.

Organic fraction municipal solid waste (OFMSW) has a high potential for energy and value-added product recovery due to its carbon- and nutrient-rich composition; however, traditional value chains have treated OFMSW as an undesired by-product. This study focuses on value chain optimisation to assist the transition to resource recovery value chains. To achieve this, this work combined two stage stochastic mathematical optimisation with geographical spatial analysis and time series waste generation analysis. Existing infrastructure in England, including anaerobic digestion plants and road transportation networks, were included in the model. To account for uncertainty in waste generation, multiple scenarios and their associated probabilities were developed based on environmental variables. The optimisation problem was solved to further advance the understanding of economically optimal waste-to-resource value chains under waste generation variability. The pertinent decision variables included sizing, technology selection, waste flows and location of thermochemical treatment sites. The model highlights the potential reduction in system profitability as a result of different operating constraints, such as minimum plant operating capacity factors and landfill taxation. The latter was shown to have the largest impact on profitability as overconservative systems designs were implemented to hedge against the waste variability. Such computer-aided models offer opportunities to overcome the challenges posed by waste generation variability and waste to resource value chain transformation.

Plastic pollution is emerging as a potential threat to the marine environment. In the current study, we selected seagrass meadows, known to efficiently trap organic and inorganic particles, to investigate the concentrations and dynamics of microplastics in their soil. We assessed microplastic contamination and accumulation in ²¹⁰Pb dated soil cores collected in Posidonia oceanica meadows at three locations along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, with two sites located in the Almería region (Agua Amarga and Roquetas) and one at Cabrera Island (Santa Maria). Almería is known for its intense agricultural industry with 30 000 ha of plastic-covered greenhouses, while the Cabrera Island is situated far from urban areas. Microplastics were extracted using enzymatic digestion and density separation. The particles were characterized by visual identification and with Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and related to soil age-depth chronologies. Our findings showed that the microplastic contamination and accumulation was negligible until the mid-1970s, after which plastic particles increased dramatically, with the highest concentrations of microplastic particles (MPP) found in the recent (since 2012) surface soil of Agua Amarga (3819 MPP kg⁻¹), followed by the top-most layers of the soil of the meadows in Roquetas (2173 kg⁻¹) and Santa Maria (68–362 kg⁻¹). The highest accumulation rate was seen in the Roquetas site (8832 MPP m⁻² yr⁻¹). The increase in microplastics in the seagrass soil was associated to land-use change following the intensification of the agricultural industry in the area, with a clear relationship between the development of the greenhouse industry in Almería and the concentration of microplastics in the historical soil record. This study shows a direct linkage between intense anthropogenic activity, an extensive use of plastics and high plastic contamination in coastal marine ecosystems such as seagrass meadows. We highlight the need of proper waste management to protect the coastal environment from continuous pollution.

Considerable human data have shown that the exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) correlates to the risk of metabolic diseases, however the underlying effects are not clearly elucidated. In this study, we investigated the impacts of PFOS treatment, using in-vivo, ex-vivo and in-vitro approaches, on pancreatic β-cell functions. Mice were oral-gavage with 1 and 5 μg PFOS/g body weight/day for 21 days. The animals showed a significant increase in liver triglycerides, accompanied by a reduction of triglycerides in blood sera and glycogen in livers and muscles. Histological examination of pancreases showed no noticeable changes in the size and number of islets from the control and treatment groups. Immunohistochemistry showed a reduction of staining intensities of insulin and the transcriptional factors (Pdx-1, islet-1) in islets of pancreatic sections from PFOS-treated groups, but no changes in the intensity of Glut2 and glucagon were noted. Transcriptomic study of isolated pancreatic islets treated ex vivo with 1 μM and 10 μM PFOS for 24 h, underlined perturbations of the insulin signaling pathways. Western blot analysis of ex-vivo PFOS-treated islets revealed a significant reduction in the expression levels of the insulin receptor, the IGF1 receptor-β, Pdk1-Akt-mTOR pathways, and Pdx-1. Using the mouse β-cells (Min-6) treated with 1 μM and 10 μM PFOS for 24 h, Western blot analysis consistently showed the PFOS-treatment inhibited Akt-pathway and reduced cellular insulin contents. Moreover, functional studies revealed the inhibitory effects of PFOS on glucose-stimulated insulin-secretion (GSIS) and the rate of ATP production. Our data support the perturbing effects of PFOS on animal metabolism and demonstrate the underlying molecular targets to impair β-cell functions.
