Spatio-temporal variation and influence factors of PM2.5 concentrations in China from 1998 to 2014

Based on the remote sensing retrieval of PM2.5 concentration data in the long-time series, both the linear regression and grey system correlation analysis methods were employed to analyze the spatial and temporal pattern, variation trend and the main influencing factors of PM2.5 concentration in China from 1998 to 2014. The results showed that only 16.21%–24.67% of the land area in China PM2.5 concentrations reached the annual average criterion value of 10 μg/m3 set by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1998–2014; the PM2.5 concentrations were greater than 95 μg/m3 mainly in Xinjiang Taklimakan Desert, west of Tianjin and the central region of Hebei. PM2.5 concentration was less than 10 μg/m3 mainly in Tibet, western Sichuan, northeastern Yunnan, Taiwan, northern Xinjiang, northern Inner Mongolia and northwest of Heilongjiang. High PM2.5 concentration in the northwest of China was mainly affected by sand and dust, while it was mainly caused by human activities in the eastern region. Except for Taiwan, low PM2.5 concentration areas were mainly located in the economically backward regions. The positive indicators in highly correlation with PM2.5 concentration include the average temperature, the proportion of primary and secondary industry to GDP, industrial consumption, the proportion of fulfilled amount of investment in real estate development to GDP, SO2 emissions and population density. The negative indicators in highly correlation with PM2.5 concentration include the average precipitation, the average wind velocity, the proportion of the tertiary industry to GDP, and the greening coverage rate of the built-up areas.

Using data from four periods from 1959 to 2015, we report the long-term variation of the macrobenthic community in the Yangtze River estuary and its adjacent area. In total, 624 species were collected, and Polychaeta was the dominant group. Significant differences between the four periods were found. The CCA (canonical correspondence analysis) and RDA (redundancy analysis) results revealed that temperature, salinity, and depth significantly influenced the macrobenthic communities (89.6% of the species-environment relationship variance was explained by the first two axes of CCA and 94.3% was explained by RDA). The results of K-dominance curves (the elevation increased over time), ABC (abundance/biomass comparison) curves (the W value changed from 0.311 to 0.167 during 1959 to 2014–2015) and the Shannon-Wiener index (log base=2; 2.29–5.03 in 1959, 2.86–4.55 in 2000–2001, 2.28–4.56 in 2011–2012, and 1.79–4.43 in 2014–2015) showed that the ecological status of the benthic study area was deteriorating.

Bosphorus, is a strongly driven international maritime route between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and is a high risk area for oil spill due to the heavy tanker traffic. In this study an oil spill trajectory model was developed for investigating the potential risks of accidental oil spills in Bosphorus. The proposed oil spill trajectory model combines the surface current velocity data obtained from a calibrated hydrodynamic model with the advection, spreading, and evaporation processes that are effective only on the sea surface and dominant for a couple of hours after the oil spill. Model simulations revealed that spilled oil reaches the shoreline on both sides of Bosphorus in <4h following the spill. We proposed locations for emergency intervention stations in Bosphorus which can be used to devise a suitable oil spill contingency plan to keep the adverse impacts of oil spills at minimum.

We examined the effect of two herbicides (Irgarol 1051 and Diuron) on symbiotic dinoflagellates in the hard coral Acropora digitifera using delayed fluorescence (DF), specifically assessing changes in molecular membrane transport, i.e. inflow and outflow rates, and the binding of the herbicides to target proteins in photosystem II. The DF approach is rapid (e.g. measurement time, 60 s) and non-invasive, and can provide data on the extent of a photosynthetic system and the activity of its electron carriers. The DF of A. digitifera is inhibited 2 h after exposure to 1 μg/L of either Irgarol or Diuron. Analysis of DF inhibition over time by a compartment model suggests that Irgarol exposure results in a relatively higher inflow rate and lower outflow rate than does Diuron exposure. This suggests that Irgarol exposure more strongly inhibits photosynthesis and that the coral symbiotic dinoflagellates recover less from inhibition.

As coastal population growth increases globally, effective waste management practices are required to protect biodiversity. Water authorities are under increasing pressure to reduce the impact of sewage effluent discharged into the coastal environment and restore disturbed ecosystems. We review the role of benthic macroalgae as ecosystem engineers and focus particularly on the temperate Australasian fucoid Hormosira banksii as a case study for rocky intertidal restoration efforts. Research focussing on the roles of ecosystem engineers is lagging behind restoration research of ecosystem engineers. As such, management decisions are being made without a sound understanding of the ecology of ecosystem engineers. For successful restoration of rocky intertidal shores it is important that we assess the thresholds of engineering traits (discussed herein) and the environmental conditions under which they are important.

The reporting of ecological phenomena and environmental status routinely required point observations, collected with traditional sampling approaches to be extrapolated to larger reporting scales. This process encompasses difficulties that can quickly entrain significant errors. Remote sensing techniques offer insights and exceptional spatial coverage for observing the marine environment. This review provides guidance on (i) the structures and discontinuities inherent within the extrapolative process, (ii) how to extrapolate effectively across multiple spatial scales, and (iii) remote sensing techniques and data sets that can facilitate this process. This evaluation illustrates that remote sensing techniques are a critical component in extrapolation and likely to underpin the production of high-quality assessments of ecological phenomena and the regional reporting of environmental status. Ultimately, is it hoped that this guidance will aid the production of robust and consistent extrapolations that also make full use of the techniques and data sets that expedite this process.

Olefin-based synthetic-based drilling mud (SBM) was released into the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) disaster in 2010. We studied the composition of neat SBM and, using conventional GC-FID, the extent, concentration, and chemical character of SBM-derived olefins in >3600 seafloor sediments collected in 2010/2011 and 2014. SBM-derived (C14–C20) olefins occurred (up to 10cm deep) within a 6.5km2 “footprint” around the well. The olefin concentration in most sediments decreased an order of magnitude between 2010/2011 and 2014, at least in part due to biodegradation, evidenced by the preferential loss C16 and C18 linear (α- and internal) versus branched olefins. Based on their persistence for 4-years in sediments around the Macondo well, and 13-years near a former unrelated drill site (~62km away), weathered SBM-derived olefins released during the DWH disaster are anticipated to persist in deep-sea sediment for (at least) a comparable duration.

An integrated indicator system was developed for determining synthetic environmental responses under multiple types of coastal reclamation engineering in the Yellow River estuary, China. Four types of coastal engineering works were analyzed, namely port construction, petroleum exploitation, fishery and aquaculture, and seawall defense. In addition, two areas with limited human disturbances were considered for comparison. From the weights of the response value for each indicator, port construction was determined to be the primary impact contributor among the four engineering works studies. Specifically, hydrodynamic conditions, ecological status, economic costs, and engineering intensity were on average 72.78%, 65.03%, 75.03%, and 66.35% higher than those of other engineering types. Furthermore, fishery and aquaculture impact on water quality was 42.51% higher than that of other engineering types, whereas seawall defense impact on landscape variation was 51.75% higher than that of other engineering types. The proposed indicator system may provide effective coastal management in future.

A simultaneous monitoring study on organotins (butyltins and phenyltins) and most frequently used alternative antifouling biocides (Irgarol 1051, Diuron, Sea-Nine 211 and M1) in water and sediments (n=44) collected from three Special Management Sea Areas operated by Korean government. The lower concentration of butyltins (BTs) than that of new antifouling biocides (NEW) was found in water but the significant greater concentration of BTs than that of NEW was still found in sediments. The tributyltin (TBT) levels in water exceeded the chronic criterion to protect seawater aquatic life at several sites. Even ten years after the ban of the use of TBT-based antifouling paint, the concentrations of TBT, Diuron and Irgarol 1051 in sediments from shipyards exceeded global sediment quality guidelines and potentially poses adverse risks on marine organisms and extremely high concentration of TBT up to 2304ng/g was found for a sediment collected at a shipyard.

The particulate material was fractionated into 5 size classes (>90μ, 50–90μ, 6–50μ, 1–6μ, and <1μ). DOP was analysed as easily (DOPh, DOPpa) and less easily hydrolysable compounds (DOPox). Based on Vmax, 94% of the high affinity AP activity was due to <50μ cells and 77% to <1μ cells. 83% of the low affinity activity was due to >90μ cells. The high affinity activities were negatively correlated with DOP for the <50μ classes. These correlations came mostly from DOPox. They were more significant when NO3+NO2 concentrations were high, when DIP concentrations were low and when N/P ratio was >10. At lower N/P ratios, AP was more significantly correlated with DIP. The low affinity activities showed significant negative correlation with DIP and with DOP and DOPox for the >90μ class. The inhibition of AP activities by DOPox may originate from stable compounds interfering with DIP for the control of AP synthesis.
