High-rate anaerobic treatment of digestate using fixed film reactors

The effluent stream of the anaerobic digestion processes, the digestate, accommodates high residual organic content that needs to be further treated before discharge. Anaerobic treatment of digestate would not only reduce the residual organic compounds in digestate but also has a potential to capture the associated biogas. High-rate anaerobic reactor configurations can treat the waste streams using lower hydraulic retention times which requires less footprint opposed to the conventional completely stirred tank reactors. This study investigated the high-rate anaerobic treatment performance and the associated biogas capture from the digestate of a manure mixture composed of 90% laying hen and 10% cattle manures in fixed-film reactors. The results indicated that it was possible to reduce total chemical oxygen demand content of the digestate by 57–62% in 1.3–1.4 days of hydraulic retention time. The corresponding biogas yields obtained were in the range of 0.395–0.430 Lbiogas/g VSadded which were found to be comparable to many raw feedstocks. Moreover, significant total phosphorus reduction (36–47%) and greenhouse gas capture (over 14.5–18.1 tCO2e/d per m3 digestate) were also recorded in the anaerobic fixed-film reactors.

A multitude of recent studies have documented the detrimental effects of crude oil exposure on early life stages of fish, including larvae and embryos. While polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), particularly alkyl PAHs, are often considered the main cause of observed toxic effects, other crude oil derived organic compounds are usually overlooked. In the current study, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was applied to investigate the body burden of a wide range of petrogenic compounds in Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and cod (Gadus morhua) embryos that had been exposed to sublethal doses of dispersed crude oil. Several groups of alkylated monoaromatic compounds (e.g. alkyl tetralins, indanes and alkyl benzenes), as well as highly alkylated PAHs, were found to accumulate in the fish embryos upon crude oil exposure. To investigate the toxicity of the monoaromatic compounds, two models (1-isopropyl-4-methyltetralin and 1-isopropyl-4-methylindane) were synthesized and shown to bioaccumulate and cause delayed hatching in developing embryos. Minor developmental effects, including craniofacial and jaw deformations and pericardial edemas, were also observed at the highest studied concentrations of the alkylindane.

In the present study Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels were exposed for 28 days to three salinities: 30 (control), 25 and 35. Simultaneously, organisms at each salinity were exposed to either the antimicrobial agent Triclosan (TCS) or the pharmaceutical drug Diclofenac (DIC) at 1 μg/L. Salinity alone and exposure to PPCPs changed mussel's metabolic capacity and oxidative status, but no additive or synergetic effects resulting from the combined exposures were observed. Overall, the metabolic capacity of mussels was decreased when exposed to TCS and DIC under control salinity, which was less pronounced at salinities out of the control level. TCS had a notorious effect over glutathione peroxidase activity while DIC exposure enhanced catalase response. Such defence mechanisms were able to prevent cellular damage but still a clear reduction in GSH/GSSG ratio after PPCPs exposures indicates oxidative stress which could compromise bivalve's performance to further stressing events.

Due to the growing concern about the presence of microplastics (MP) in the environment, the number of studies evaluating the toxicity of these small persistent particles on different marine species has increased in recent years. Few studies have addressed their impact on marine phytoplankton, a subject of great concern since they are primary producers of the aquatic food web. The aim of this study is to unravel the cytotoxicity of 2.5 μg mL−1 unlabelled amino-modified polystyrene beads of different sizes (0.5 and 2 μm) on the marine diatom Chaetoceros neogracile. In addition to traditional growth and photosynthesis endpoints, several physiological and biochemical parameters were monitored every 24 h in C. neogracile cells by flow cytometry during their exponential growth (72 h). Dynamic Light Scattering measurements revealed the strong aggregation and the negative charge of the beads assayed in the culture medium, which seemed to minimize particle interaction with cells and potentially associated impacts. Indeed, MP were not attached to the microalgal cell wall, as evidenced by scanning electron micrographs. Cell growth, morphology, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species levels and membrane potential remained unaltered. However, exposure to MP significantly decreased the cellular esterase activity and the neutral lipid content. Microalgal oil bodies could serve as an energy source for maintaining a healthy cellular status. Thus, MP-exposed cells modulate their energy metabolism to properly acclimate to the stress conditions.

The potential presence of nanoplastics (NP) in aquatic environments represents a growing concern regarding their possible effects on aquatic organisms. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of polystyrene (PS) amino-modified particles (50 nm PSNH2) on the cellular and metabolic responses of the diatom Chaetoceros neogracile cultures at two essential phases of the growth cycle, i.e. exponential (division) and stationary (storage) phases. Both cultures were exposed for 4 days to low (0.05 μg mL−1) and high (5 μg mL−1) concentrations of PS-NH2. Exposure to NP impaired more drastically the major cellular and physiological parameters during exponential phase than during the stationary phase. Only an increase in ROS production was observed at both culture phases following NP exposures. In exponential phase cultures, large decreases in chlorophyll content, esterase activity, cellular growth and photosynthetic efficiency were recorded upon NP exposure, which could have consequences on the diatoms life cycle and higher food-web levels. The observed differential responses to NP exposure according to culture phase could reflect i) the higher concentration of Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) at stationary phase leading to NP aggregation and thus, probably minimizing NP effects, and/or ii) the fact that dividing cells during exponential phase may be intrinsically more sensitive to stress. This work evidenced the importance of algae physiological state for assessing the NP impacts with interactions between NP and TEP being one key factor affecting the fate of NP in algal media and their impact to algal’ cells.

Nowadays, environmental pollution by microplastics (<5 mm; MP) is a major issue. MP are contaminating marine organisms consumed by humans. This work studied MP contamination in two bivalve species of commercial interest: blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) sampled on the Channel coastlines (France). In parallel, 13 plastic additives and 27 hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) were quantified in bivalves flesh using SBSE-TD-GS-MS/MS to explore a possible relationship between their concentrations and MP contamination levels. MP were extracted using a 10% potassium hydroxide digestion method then identified by μ-Raman spectroscopy. The proportion of contaminated bivalves by MP ranged from 34 to 58%. Blue mussels and common cockles exhibited 0.76 ± 0.40 and 2.46 ± 1.16 MP/individual and between 0.15 ± 0.06 and 0.74 ± 0.35 MP/g of tissue wet weight. Some HOC and plastic additives were detected in bivalves. However, no significant Pearson or Spearman correlation was found between MP loads and plastic additives or HOC concentrations in bivalve tissues for the two species.

Adverse impacts of marine litter is documented on >1400 species, including marine megafauna (fish, birds, sea turtles and mammals). The primary impacts include ingestion and entanglement, and there is increasing concern about chemical contamination via ingestion. Numerous survey approaches and monitoring programs have been developed and implemented around the world. They may aim to provide data about parameters such as species distribution and interactions with anthropogenic activities. During the Sixth International Marine Debris Conference, a session was dedicated to the tools and constraints in monitoring interactions between litter and megafauna. In the present paper, we summarize 7 case studies which discuss entanglement and ingestion including macro- and micro-debris in several taxa and across multiple geographic regions. We then discusses the importance of tools and standardizing methods for assessment and management purposes, in the context of international environmental policies and marine litter strategies.

Quantification of total protein and of carbohydrate and fatty acid profiles was carried out to determine differences between the composition of the same species in two development stages reared in four distinct farms. A significant influence of the rearing site on the nutritional composition of the same species was found for adult European seabass regarding saturated, monounsaturated and highly unsaturated fatty acids contents, both between estuaries and within each estuary. In gilthead seabream, saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and highly unsaturated fatty acids content were also influenced by the rearing site. Carbohydrate analysis showed a significant influence of the rearing site on free sugar and polysaccharide content in fish of both species, and there was no influence on the species' protein content. Differences in fatty acid and carbohydrate content among juvenile and adult stages were found for all the groups studied. The present study supported the existing evidence that semi-intensive rearing systems are subjected to the variability of extrinsic factors in the rearing sites, influencing the nutritional value of the same species, namely regarding lipid and carbohydrate profiles, depending on the production site. From a consumer's perspective, such differences may come as a disadvantage of the rearing method, as it is expected for a product to provide equal nutritional properties and benefits regardless its origin, especially within the same country.

While water temperature controls many physiological processes in fish, knowledge of the effects of this factor on PFAS toxicokinetic is still limited. This study presents experimental results of internal distribution and elimination rates of two perfluorinated acid compounds, namely perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) in adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to three temperatures. Dietary exposure experiments were conducted at 7 °C, 11 °C, and 19 °C and liver, blood, muscle, brain, and kidney were sampled for analysis. PFOS concentrations were comparable to or exceeded those of PFHxS, while PFHxS was eliminated faster than PFOS, whatever the temperature. Internal distribution changed significantly for both substances when fish were exposed to a range of temperatures from 7 to 19 °C. Indeed, PFOS and PFHxS relative distribution increased in blood, liver, and brain while they decreased in muscle when the water temperature rose. The water temperature variation affected the elimination half-lives, depending on the substances and organs.
