In the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and accompanying tsunami struck the Tohoku region of Japan. The tsunami washed away old equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) stored in the region's factories, and these PCBs may have leaked out of their casings into the marine environment. In this study, we evaluate marine PCB contamination by comparing mussels collected before (in 2005) and after (June 2011) the tsunami. PCB contamination levels were significantly elevated in mussel samples collected after the tsunami in June 2011 (3 months after the tsunami). This indicates that PCBs (specifically, formulation KC-400) leaked out of old equipment swept away by the tsunami and accumulated in mussels. PCBs were estimated to have an environmental half-life (EHL) in mussels of 4 months. Our results show that an earthquake and subsequent tsunami can cause elevated PCB contamination in the marine environment.

In this study, a general methodology that is based on numerical models and statistical analysis is developed to assist in the definition of marine litter cleanup and mitigation strategies at an estuarine scale. The methodology includes four main steps: k-means clustering to identify representative metocean scenarios; dynamic downscaling to obtain high-resolution drivers with which to force a transport model; numerical transport modelling to generate a database of potential litter trajectories; and a statistical analysis of this database to obtain probabilities of litter accumulation. The efficacy of this methodology is demonstrated by its application to an estuary along the northern coast of Spain by comparing the numerical results with field data. The necessary criteria to ensure its applicability to any other estuary were provided. As the main conclusion, the developed methodology successfully assesses the litter distribution in estuaries with minimum computational effort.

The objective of the present study was to test whether the Atlantic ghost crab Ocypode quadrata is a reliable biomonitor of microplastic (MP) pollution of beach sediments. To test the hypothesis (H1) that the sediment is the main source of MP ingestion, the proportion of MP types (hard plastic, microfibers, pellet, soft plastic, and extruded polystyrene foam) in the gut content was compared with that on the strandline. The types of MPs in the gut content and sediment had similar proportions; black (~49%) and blue (~45%) microfibers were responsible for this similarity (55%), hence confirming H1. However, the second hypothesis (H2) that prevalence of MP in the gut content is related to its density on beach with distinct urbanization degree was not accepted. These results indicate that high trophic plasticity of the ghost crab and, consequently, multiple-sources of contamination may interfere with its use as a biomonitor of MP pollution.

Ten pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) were determined in northern Taiwan estuarine waters and Taiwan Strait (TS) seawater. The ecological risk of these PhACs was assessed using risk quotient (RQ), which is the ratio of the measured maximum concentration to the predicted no-effect concentration. Six PhACs were detected within the estuarine waters. Caffeine concentration (130–718 ng l⁻¹) was the highest among the analyzed PhACs. The distribution of PhACs in the Danshuei River Estuary generally exhibited addition behavior, except that caffeine showed conservative behavior. Carbamazepine, gemfibrozil, caffeine, and ketoprofen were detected in TS seawaters. Their concentrations follow the sequence: gemfibrozil > ketoprofen > caffeine > carbamazepine. The caffeine concentrations in TS seawaters were 2–3 orders of magnitude lower than those in Danshuei estuarine waters. With few exceptions for caffeine, erythromycin, and sulfadiazine posing low risk in some estuarine waters, most of the RQ values were <0.01, suggesting no adverse effects on aquatic organisms.

The effects of nutrient distribution and structure on the behavior and speciation of dissolved inorganic arsenic (DIAs) in coastal waters were analyzed based on the data of 48 surface water samples collected in the southwestern coast of Laizhou Bay and its adjacent rivers (SWLZB). The concentration of DIAs in the SWLZB ranged from 0.016 to 0.099 μmol l⁻¹ and generally decreased from west to south. The inshore waters exhibited higher DIAs level than the open ocean. The As⁵⁺/As³⁺ ratio was significantly positively correlated with the concentration of TDN, NO₃-N, PO₄-P, DSi, Chl-a and DO. The concentration of DIAs was strongly correlated with the concentration of PO₄-P and DSi, suggesting that adsorption/desorption was an important process for regulating the total DIAs concentration. The results indicated that the distribution of nutrients might well be an important environmental factor affecting the speciation and behavior of DIAs in surface water of the SWLZB.

Solid-phase speciation and porewater chemistry measured by the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique were used to understand the diagenesis of sulfur (S), iron (Fe), and phosphorus (P) in sediments of Jiaozhou Bay (China), which has been impacted by multiple anthropogenic perturbations. Despite water eutrophication, sediments of the bay are low in organic carbon and sulfide, but high in unsulfidized Fe(II). Dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) prevails in sediments of the bay, and there is no evidence for responses of S and Fe diagenesis to the water eutrophication, which is largely attributable to unique depositional and diagenetic regimes in association with multiple anthropogenic perturbations. Good coupling of porewater Fe²⁺ and P in the porewaters suggests that P mobilization is driven mainly by DIR. Low Fe²⁺/P ratios in porewaters imply that oxidative regeneration of Fe oxides within the upper sediments is incapable of efficiently scavenging upward diffusing P.

The main objective of the present study was to explore the potential link between acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and burrowing behaviour of the ragworm Hediste diversicolor, which may have consequences at higher levels of biological organisation. Two complementary studies were conducted. AChE activity, at the sub-individual level, and behavioural responses, at the individual level, were evaluated in worms from the Loire estuary (France), whereas density and biomass of H. diversicolor were determined at the population level. A Spearman positive correlation between both biomarkers (AChE and burrowing) suggested that inhibition of AChE activity was linked to behaviour impairments. At the population level, lower AChE and behaviour activities were detected in worms corresponding to lower population density and biomass. These results provide direct empirical field evidence demonstrating the sensitivity of behaviour of H. diversicolor as a biomonitor of estuarine health status assessment.

Discharge of effluents loaded with phosphorus (P) from anthropogenic activities constitutes serious eutrophication risks in marine and terrestrial ecosystems, including mangroves. Three mangroves in NE-Brazil were studied to evaluate the impact of P-rich-effluents from shrimp farming and domestic sewage, in relation to a control area (natural mangrove). Soil phosphorus fractionation and water chemical analysis were performed to assess potential pollution. We observed the most labile P forms increased gradually and significantly from control to sewage to shrimp farm impacted mangroves as observed by increasingly dissolved orthophosphate (PO₄³⁻) content in water and the exchangeable/soluble P (Exch-P) extracted from soils, which is supported by the discriminant analysis. Exch-P results were correlated to Humic-Acid-P, which can release more labile P forms when mineralized. Our results demonstrate a substantial impact of aquiculture and sewage effluents in mangroves at both organic and inorganic P fractions, raising important concerns regarding pollution for these marine ecosystems.

Narragansett Bay is an urban estuary that historically has been impacted by long-term discharge of sanitary wastewater (WW) effluents. High-density water sampling was conducted in Narragansett Bay, RI, USA, in an effort to understand the distribution and behavior of sucralose, an artificial sweetener that has shown utility as a sanitary wastewater tracer. Water samples were collected at sixty-seven sites and analyzed for sucralose, whose performance was compared to other tracers present in wastewater effluents. Concentrations of sucralose were much higher than the other tracers measured, carbamazepine and caffeine, ranging from 18 to 3180 ng/L and corresponded well with salinity (r² = 0.88), demonstrating conservative behavior throughout the Bay. Mapped interpolation data using an empirical bayesian kriging model clearly show the spatial trends of WW and how estuarine processes influence dilution and dispersion throughout the Bay. These findings provide further evidence of the efficacy of sucralose as a wastewater tracer in large urban estuaries where continuous high-volume discharge of WW occur.

Dual isotope nitrate (NO₃⁻) analysis was performed on the western coast of Guangdong Province to investigate seasonal changes in the main nitrate sources and their biogeochemical processing, which are due to the rapid development of the local economy. In the nearshore area, significant seasonal variations of nitrate sources occurred. The dominant nitrate sources, originating from manure and sewage, suggested that the nitrate along the west coast of Guangdong Province was mainly influenced by local cities despite the westward flow of diluted Pearl River water. In the offshore area, the nitrate loss in the upper and mid water during both two seasons mainly caused by phytoplankton assimilation, whereas coupled nitrification-denitrification could be responsible for the nitrate loss in the bottom waters during summer. Our results suggest that, with the rapid development of local economy, the nitrate sources in the coastal area have shifted to manure and sewage from the local cities.
