The aim of this study was to analyze different port areas (leased, nonleased and vessels) in terms of plastic segregation (scenario 1) and how much of this plastic is recycled (scenario 2). Data envelopment analysis was applied and the variables were total amount of solid waste and percentage of segregated plastic in relation to total solid waste (scenario 1) and amount of segregated plastics and percentage of recycled in relation to segregated plastics (scenario 2). Segregation efficiency was low (49%) in the nonleased area, but all the segregated material is recycled, suggesting that the management bottleneck in this case is waste segregation. Similar segregation results were obtained in the leased areas and vessels (36 and 35%, respectively), but recycling efficiency was greater in the former (92 and 24%, respectively).

Microplastics (plastic particles <5 mm) are an emerging concern in Arctic sea ice with measured concentrations orders of magnitude higher than in surface seawater. However, incorporation of microplastics into sea ice, and their impact on sea ice properties, is unknown. We added microplastic particles in a microcosm experiment to determine microplastic distributions and effects on sea ice properties. Microplastic additions did not affect sea ice growth, but high concentrations of microplastics at the ice surface resulted in high ice salinity and changes in sea ice albedo. Field studies in the Gulf of Bothnia (Baltic Sea) showed sea ice concentration of microplastics from 8 to 41 particles per liter of melted ice, wich were much lower than those found to impact sea ice properties in the microcosm experiments. However, should microplastic concentrations increase, microplastic incorporation in sea ice may impact sea ice albedo.

Narragansett Bay is an urban estuary that historically has been impacted by long-term discharge of sanitary wastewater (WW) effluents. High-density water sampling was conducted in Narragansett Bay, RI, USA, in an effort to understand the distribution and behavior of sucralose, an artificial sweetener that has shown utility as a sanitary wastewater tracer. Water samples were collected at sixty-seven sites and analyzed for sucralose, whose performance was compared to other tracers present in wastewater effluents. Concentrations of sucralose were much higher than the other tracers measured, carbamazepine and caffeine, ranging from 18 to 3180 ng/L and corresponded well with salinity (r² = 0.88), demonstrating conservative behavior throughout the Bay. Mapped interpolation data using an empirical bayesian kriging model clearly show the spatial trends of WW and how estuarine processes influence dilution and dispersion throughout the Bay. These findings provide further evidence of the efficacy of sucralose as a wastewater tracer in large urban estuaries where continuous high-volume discharge of WW occur.

Comparisons of six selected Mediterranean MPAs were conducted to find similarities and site-specific differences in coastline fluxes and sources of plastic marine litter. Output from the recently developed 2D Lagrangian model for the Mediterranean was post-processed to study (1) the National Park of ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera, (2) Nature Reserve of Bouches de Bonifacio, (3) North-East Malta MPA, (4) Specially Protected Area of Porto Cesareo, (5) Community Importance Site of Torre Guaceto, and (6) Ethniko Thalassio Parko Alonnisou Voreion Sporadon. Model coastline fluxes of plastic ranged from 0.4 to3.6 kg (km day)−1, which is relatively low compared to the average flux of 6.2 ± 0.8 kg (km day)−1 calculated over the Mediterranean 2013–2017. Shipping was identified as a major source of plastic litter in all MPAs studied, contributing 55%–88% of total plastic. Site-specific rankings of the top 5 land-based plastic sources revealed that sea surface kinematics control plastic drift.

Increased plastic consumption and poor waste management have resulted in litter representing an ever-increasing threat to the marine environment. To identify sources and evaluate mitigation measures, beach litter has been monitored. Using data from two citizen science protocols (CSPs) and OSPAR monitoring of Norwegian beaches, this study 1) identifies the most abundant litter types, 2) compares OSPAR to citizen science data, and 3) examines how to improve the management relevance of beach litter data. The dominant litter types were; food and drink- and fishery related items, and unidentifiable plastic pieces. Data from CSPs are consistent with OSPAR data in abundance and diversity, although few OSPAR beaches limit verification of CSP data. In contrast to OSPAR, the CSPs estimate the weight of the litter. CSPs lack important variables which could explain why some litter types are abundant in some particular areas. The latter could be improved by recording GPS positions.

Since 2011, tropical beaches from Africa to Brazil, Central America, and the Caribbean have been inundated by tons of sargassum seaweed from a new equatorial source of pelagic sargassum in the Atlantic. In recent years the extraordinary accumulations of sargassum make this a nuisance algal bloom for tropical coasts. In 2018 satellite data indicated floating mats of sargassum that extended throughout the Caribbean to the northeast coast of Brazil with the highest percent coverage over the water yet recorded. A literature review suggests that Atlantic equatorial recirculation of seaweed mats combined with nutrients from several possible sources may be stimulating the growth and accumulations of sargassum. In the western equatorial recirculation area, new nutrient sources may include Amazon River floods and hurricanes; in the eastern equatorial recirculation area, nutrient sources that could sustain the sargassum blooms include coastal upwelling and Congo River freshwater and nutrients.

The bioturbation potential of macrobenthos communities (BPc) is an important parameter in marine ecology. Based on macrobenthos field surveys, BPc values were estimated in Bohai Bay, China. The horizontal distribution of BPc values changed across seasons while showing a certain level of continuity over time. The maximum BPc value was recorded in summer while the minimum occurred in winter. Although only a few environmental variables showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) correlation with BPc, about 20 environmental variables exhibited a moderate correlation with BPc (0.3 < r < 0.5). The depth of the redox potential discontinuity (RPD) measured in situ changed across seasons, and the biogenic mixing depth values derived from the BPc index exhibited a relationship with the lowest RPD depth measurements. Our results suggest that the RPD depth can be predicted from BPc values, thereby showcasing a useful application of the BPc index in marine benthic pollution and environmental management research.

The EYNR is the most important wetland in central Chile because it is protected as a RAMSAR site. It includes coastal lagoons, estuaries and saltmarshes, sustaining an important biodiversity. The chemical complexity was described using water and soil samples, which are characterized by high levels of alkalinity and soil cations. In addition, high concentrations of Cu (0.01–0.080 mg L⁻¹) and Pb (0.120–0.566 mg L⁻¹) in water were measured. Using a simplified index of water quality for oxygen demand, the ecological status of the wetland was classified as bad quality due to the existing use of land. Multivariable analyses and heavy metal index classified this wetland as having low to intermediate deterioration due to the combination of heavy metals. If this trend is allowed to continue unabated, the food web complexes in this wetland are likely to be at the highest risk of induced heavy metal contamination.

Antioxidant activities in Mytilus galloprovincialis were determined from samples collected at Scarborough, Hout Bay, Green Point, Milnerton and Bloubergstrand in Cape Town, South Africa. Antioxidant enzyme activity was determined by measuring CAT, SOD and GSH. The total antioxidant capacity was measured using FRAP and ORAC, while the content and lipid peroxidation marker levels of CDs and TBARS. Antioxidant activities and responses in mussels varied between sites with significant correlations for 85% and 71% of all antioxidant measurements made for Fe and Zn, respectively. The oxidative stress results reported here are novel for the region and indicated that mussels in Cape Town do not have (relatively) high levels of antioxidant activities as a result of exposure to metals. The research undertaken suggests that antioxidant responses was an appropriate biomarker of exposure to metals but more environmental parameters should be considered when interpreting antioxidant responses in the natural environment.

In the early 1990s, a cliff-face disposal-system discharging approximately 940 ML/day, or 80% of sewage generated by the City of Sydney (Australia) (population 3.3 million) was replaced by three deepwater ocean outfalls. An 18-year benthic infauna monitoring study was undertaken to address earlier concerns of long-term accumulation from sewage discharges and potential adverse effects on the marine environment. Assessment of outfall community structure indicated organic input from discharges has not resulted in sediment anoxia. The current post-commissioning investigation detected a gradual change in community structure from north to south in the study area, which was also displayed in taxonomic turnover south of the Malabar outfall. Temporal fluctuation in community structure detected at the three outfall and three reference locations in the current study was also noted in the pre-commissioning study at these locations. Evidence provided by this study indicated the Sydney deepwater ocean outfalls do not cause significant ecological impact.
