Occurrence, trophic transfer, and health risk assessment of bisphenol analogues in seafood from the Persian Gulf Full text

The presence of chemicals in marine organisms is an important issue for human health due to the growing rate of seafood consumption. Potential exposure to seven bisphenol analogues through seafood consumption was investigated in some popular seafood from the Persian Gulf. Bisphenols were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol B (BPB) were the first and second most common bisphenols in the studied samples, respectively. The highest levels of BPA (mean 13.58 ± 5.70 μg/kg.dw) and BPB (mean 10.30 ± 7.98 μg/kg.dw) were found in E.coioides species. Bisphenol F and bisphenol AF were detected only in P. armatus and L. klunzingeri, respectively. Trophic transfer investigation demonstrated that BPA and BPB were biomagnified in the studied organisms through their diet. The eco-toxicity and estrogenic risk assessment indicated that seafood consumption does not pose a health threat to consumers. However, routine monitoring of bisphenols in seafood seems to be necessary to ensure food safety.

Presence of microplastics (MPs) in a broad range of wild and cultured marine organisms is well-documented, but transfer mechanisms by which cultured organisms are contaminated with MPs is poorly understood. MP loads in three Malaysian commercial brands of fish meal were investigated. Chemical composition of extracted MP-like particles was confirmed using micro-Raman spectroscopy. Inorganic composition of MPs and pigment particles were assessed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Out of 336 extracted particles, 64.3% were plastic polymers, 25% pigment particles, 4.2% non-plastic items, and 6.5% were unidentified. Fragments were the dominant form of MPs (78.2%) followed by filaments (13.4%) and films (8.4%). This study demonstrates that cultured organisms could be exposed to high levels of MPs via MP contaminated fish/shellfish used in fish meal production. Fish meal replacement with other sources of protein including meat meals and plant-based meals may mitigate MP exposure to cultured or farmed organisms.

Intertidal groundwater and seawater were sampled to analyze the distribution characteristics, the contamination status and the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD)-associated fluxes of heavy metals Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Hg as well as the metalloid As at four typical intertidal wetlands (including a sandy beach, a mud flat, a tidal marsh and an estuarine intertidal zone) of Jiaozhou Bay, China. Results show that the surface water near the Dagu River estuary suffers from a severe Cu pollution. The groundwater in the sandy beach and mud flat has stronger enrichment abilities of heavy metals than those at the other two sites. The contents of Pb and Zn in groundwater are mainly controlled by the sulfate reduction. At the mud flat, human activities may cause potential Pb contamination to groundwater. The heavy metal effluxes in the sandy beach are the largest of all the four wetlands.

The microplastics removal and its effects on membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor (MBR) for treating polluted surface water in drinking purpose was investigated in this study. Typical microplastics polyvinylchloride (PVC) with concentration 10 particles/L was added in the feed water. MBR was effective in treating organic matters and ammonia with removal rate over 80% and 95%, respectively. The removal performance was immediately inhibited with the microplastics PVC added into the MBR system, and recovered after operated for few days. The membrane fouling and cleaning results indicated that microplastics contamination could led to higher membrane fouling, and also the irreversible membrane fouling. The main contributor of rejection is the membrane module and the adsorption onto bio-carrier. The microbial community of the system before and after PVC addition did not show obvious difference. MBR has the potential to be used as effective technology in treating microplastics contaminated polluted surface water.

This baseline paper shows the Indo-Pacific mussel Perna viridis (Asian green mussel) inhabiting on floating plastic substrates in the Atlantico Department, as well as rafting on marine debris found at the Via Parque Isla de Salamanca (Magdalena). Both observations are the northernmost record of the species found in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. The above finding opens a new door that suggests that larval dispersion alone may not be the only process responsible for the presence of this invasive suspension-feeder bivalve because this species needs specific vectors for its dispersal. Some organisms such Perna viridis can persist in the marine environment, but they do not necessarily have a rafting capability that allows them to move over long distances. Floating structures as well as marine debris can serve as optimal substrates in the marine environment, contributing to an increase in the problems of non-native species on sites with a high degree of susceptibility to species invasion.

The objective of this paper is to determine whether contaminant data on mussels and sediments can be used interchangeably, or not, when assessing the degree of anthropogenic contamination of a water body. To obtain adequate coverage of the entire Gulf of Maine, Bay of Fundy sediment samples were collected, analyzed and combined with similar data from four coastal monitoring programs. This required careful interpretation but provided robust results consistent with published literature. A strong correspondence was found between sediment and mussel concentrations for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, moderate to weak correspondence for polychlorinated biphenyls, and except for mercury and zinc, little to no correspondence was found for metals. We conclude that mussel contaminant data are likely sufficient for providing information on the spatial and temporal distribution of chemical contaminants, in coastal waters, under a broad range of environmental conditions and contaminant levels, and unlike sediments, provide direct information on contaminant bioavailability.

In this study, we provide baseline data on the composition, major sources and mechanisms driving the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) mixtures in surficial sediments collected from 43 offshore and open/deep sea locations across the north, central and south Aegean Sea. The determined total concentrations of the considered PAH compounds were generally low, comparable to those reported in relatively non-polluted coastal and open/deep Mediterranean marine sites. Their molecular profile and diagnostic indices reveal mixed contributions from both pyrolytic and petrogenic sources across the study area. Organic carbon exerts an important control on the transport and ultimate accumulation of PAHs, however, the presented results highlight a significant variability in sedimentary PAHs concentrations and compositional patterns within the studied Aegean Sea sub-regions. This could be likely attributed to a combination of distinct hydrological and biogeochemical characteristics, surface and near bottom water mass circulation patterns and the relative importance of PAH sources.

This study evaluated for the first time, the distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments collected along the northern Patagonian shelf in the Argentine Sea –included in a Marine Protected Area (MPA). Total concentration of the PAHs varied from 19.47 to 183.17 ng/g dry weight and low molecular weight compounds, such as Anthracene and Naphthalene were the dominants. The selected PAHs ratios suggested a predominance of petrogenic sources and ecotoxicological risk evaluation based on the sediment quality guidelines model, indicated that some PAHs might cause occasional adverse biological effects in the study area.

The Wetlands Reserve in Al Wusta Governorate on the Arabian Sea is important for internationally migrating birds and local wildlife, but data on marine litter in the reserve, and wider region, are rare. Seven beaches around the reserve were surveyed for litter in February 2020. Abundance and weight of litter were categorised along 100 m transects. Abundance ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 items m⁻² and weight ranged from 3.2 to 170.4 g m⁻². Plastic was the dominant material in abundance (84.4–97.7%) and weight (71.3–99.3%). Top categories in abundance and weight were fisheries-related, water bottles and caps, and food packaging. Fisheries-related litter comprised 19.6–36.7% of all in abundance, but 41.4–94.4% in weight. The high proportion of fisheries-related litter (by weight) indicates that providing practical disposal facilities for unwanted and broken fishing gear would substantially reduce the impact of litter on this vital wetlands reserve.

Asymmetrical variations in six bilateral morphological characters of 75 specimens of Saurida tumbil obtained from the marine waters of Iraq were assessed. The level of asymmetry in the snout length was highest among the morphological traits examined. Variations in asymmetry in S. tumbil increased with size. These variations are possibly due to chemical contaminants.
