Toxicity evaluation of cypermethrin, glyphosate, and malathion, on two indigenous zooplanktonic species

In Aguascalientes, Mexico, there is a special concern about pesticides because of their intensive use on guava production areas, which are located in the vicinity of water reservoirs; thus, non-target organisms could be exposed. Thereafter, the aim of this work was to assess the effect of cypermethrin, Faena® (glyphosate), and malathion, which are the most used pesticides in Aguascalientes’ guava production, on the indigenous freshwater species Alona guttata (cladoceran) and Lecane papuana (rotifer). Acute 48-h toxicity tests were carried out, and LC₅₀ values were calculated. Then, five sublethal concentrations (1/80, 1/40, 1/20, 1/10, and 1/5 of the respective LC₅₀) were selected for the chronic assays: (a) intrinsic growth rate analysis in the rotifer and (b) partial life table analysis in the cladoceran. The results of the acute toxicity tests showed that A. guttata was more sensitive to malathion (LC₅₀ = 5.26 × 10⁻³ mg/L) at concentrations found in natural environments with continuous application on guava fields, whereas L. papuana was more sensitive to Faena® (LC₅₀ = 19.89 mg/L). The somatic growth of A. guttata was inhibited for the chronic exposure to cypermethrin. In addition, cypermethrin and Faena® seemed to exert endocrine disruptive effects on A. guttata. Moreover, malathion chronic exposure significantly decreased the survival of A. guttata. Moreover, L. papuana was affected chronically for the three pesticides.

The article provides information about a new device, AlgaTox developed in the R&D project sponsored by the Technology Agency (n.TA02030179) and patented in Czech Republic (CZ 305687). Its functionality is based on the use of biosensor, and its main advantage is fast response rate. The toxicity detection is achieved through precise measurement of green algae oxygen production dynamics after their exposure to light of wavelength of 680 nm. Clark sensor with a resolution of 0.05% of the equilibrium oxygen concentrations and stability at a constant pressure and temperature of 0.1% of the equilibrium oxygen concentration at the 24-h measurement is used for the oxygen detection. Laboratory testing of the device has been made using silver nitrate, substance with known inhibitory effect on algae. Real samples of aqueous soil extracts and waste sample from old dried-up industrial tailing pond enriched with insecticide have been also tested. The values of oxygen production inhibition or stimulation determined with the new device in the evaluation of real samples were up to six times higher in comparison with the corresponding values of inhibition (stimulation) of growth rates determined by standard procedure.

Elemental sulfur is the most commonly found form of sulfur in anaerobic sediments. Accurate determination of elemental sulfur is the key step to know physical chemistry and biogeochemical processes in the sediments. A novel method was developed for the analysis of elemental sulfur using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a C18 column. The procedure of determination of elemental sulfur concentrations from 0.1 to 100 mg/g (on a basis of the dry weight of sediment) is based on the direct injection of acetone extracts of sediments into a chromatographic column. The linearity range of 20–110 mg/L showed an excellent linearity of response (r = 0.999). The limit of detection and limit of quantitation for elemental sulfur were 9.41 and 4.18 μg/L, and converted sulfur mass per sediment mass was 1.88 × 10⁻² and 8.36 × 10⁻³ μg/kg. Besides, a repetitive experiment (ten times) was carried out and the average chromatographic peak area was 141.47 mg L⁻¹. The sulfur concentration in the solution used for the determination of standard deviation and relative standard deviation was 1.02 and 0.727%, respectively. The average recovery ranges between 98 and 100%. The quantitation of elemental sulfur in sediment samples from anaerobic digestion reactor is obvious, and the average concentration of elemental sulfur on the basis of the dry weight of the sediment is 5.24 mg/g. The method was sensitive and exhibited good signal-to-noise ratio, as well as linear responses over a wide concentration range.

This study assessed the level of potentially toxic trace metals (PTMs), seasonal variations, and their possible sources from the surface water and lake-bed sediment of Panchpokhari lake series, an alpine and glacial lake at 4160 m a.s.l. in Central Nepal. The lake series have five lakes, with Lake-1 larger than others. So, Lake-1 was investigated thoroughly during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Sediment core was collected from the deepest basin of the Lake-1 during pre-monsoon. Most of the PTM concentrations were higher in the pre-monsoon season; however, Sc, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, and Ag were higher in the post-monsoon. This is an indication that the lake has been impacted either by natural or long-range transported atmospheric pollutants. Ti, Sb, and Ag had extremely high enrichment factor (EF) in waters, whereas Cd, Zn, and As had high EF in sediments indicating that these metals originated from anthropogenic sources. Furthermore, PTM concentrations in the sediment were in the increasing order of Hg < Cd < Ag < Mo < Sb < Sn < As < U < Sc < Co < Cs < Cu < Pb < Ni < Cr < V < Zn < Rb < Mn < Ti < Fe and showed that the upper layer (top 10 cm) of lake sediment has been receiving a higher load of PTMs in the recent period. he observed EF values also suggested that major sources of PTMs in the sediment were from crustal origin except for a few metals (Ti, V, Sb, and Ag) which were enriched anthropogenically due to long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants, deposited at the higher elevations. Nevertheless, the level of pollution in sediments was low as indicated both by EF and geo-accumulation index.

Water quality was evaluated in a coal mining area in the city of Figueira, Paraná State, Brazil, where uranium was associated with the coal deposit. Upstream the mine, groundwaters were more acid and some elements and compounds, such as iron, aluminum, and sulfate, were in higher concentration, possibly because of acid mine drainage (AMD) generation in tailing pit. ²³⁸U and ²³⁴U activity concentrations exceeded the standards proposed by the World Health Organization in two sampling periods in effluent samples and in some groundwater samples, indicating that waters from this aquifer system were unhealthy for human consumption. Uranium isotopes were more elevated in groundwaters in the rainy month probably because of a higher leaching and transport rate of this element from rocks/tailings pit to waters. The average radon activity concentration in groundwater was higher than in surface waters and effluents in both periods studied, possibly due to the enhanced presence of uranium and radium in the aquifer rocks that would favor the radon accumulation and entrapment. The effects of the mining activities on the groundwater quality were displayed in terms of activity ratios (²³⁴U/²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra/²³⁸U), which showed different behaviors upstream the mine area relatively to areas downstream the mine.

A unique test chamber system, which enables experiments with plants under highly controlled environmental conditions, was used to examine the pollutant removal efficiency of plants. For this purpose, the removal of two different volatile organic compounds (VOC) (toluene, 2-ethylhexanol) from the air by aerial plant parts of two common indoor plant species (Dieffenbachia maculata and Spathiphyllum wallisii) was monitored. While the control over environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity, CO₂ content, and light condition) worked very well in all experiments, control experiments with the empty chamber revealed high losses of VOC, especially 2-ethylhexanol, over the test duration of 48 h. Nonetheless, compared to the empty chamber, a significantly stronger and more rapid decline in the toluene as well as in the 2-ethylhexanol concentrations was observed when plants were present in the chamber. Interestingly, almost the same VOC removal as by aerial plant parts could be achieved by potting soil without plants. A comparative literature survey revealed substantial heterogeneity in previous results concerning the VOC removal efficiency of plants. This can be mainly attributed to a high diversity in experimental setup. The experimental setup used in the current study offers an excellent opportunity to examine also plant physiological responses to pollutant exposure (or other stressors) under highly controlled conditions. For the analysis of VOC removal under typical indoor conditions, to obtain data for the assessment of realistic VOC removal efficiencies by plants in rooms and offices, a guideline would be helpful to achieve more coherent findings in this field of research.

To remove heavy metal contaminations from road runoff prior to discharge into surface water or groundwater, highly porous sorptive filter materials are used. One effective material is a technical product based on granular ferric hydroxide. To specify the removal mechanisms, lab-scale column experiments were performed preloading the material with Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. To identify removal mechanisms and the distribution of heavy metals in the material, investigations with scanning electron microscope (SEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were performed. With SEM/EDX, only Pb was detectable; all other heavy metals were not represented on the surface of the particles. To determine the intrusion of the metals, LA-ICP-MS was used. Thereby, the high porosity necessitated a special data evaluation that enabled the determination of the heavy metal removal and the leaching of other elements from the filter material as a function of depth. The measured depth profiles varied for each element and correlated with the metal mobility.

Imazethapyr and imazapic are widely used in South Brazil to control weeds in rice fields, mainly through agricultural aviation. The environmental legislation requires that agricultural aviation companies have environmental licensing, which implies that the effluent treatment system must be compliant with the regulations of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, which advises the use of an ozone-based system. An evaluation of the efficiency of this system through the analysis of the content of imazethapyr and imazapic (from the herbicide Only®) in the treatment of effluent with two distinct rates of ozone (1.0 and 2.0 g O₃/h) was performed. It was found that for each tank wash is generated an average volume of 132 L of effluent (112 L of water plus 20 L of surplus diluted spray solution). After the treatment with 1.0 and 2.0 g O₃/h, imazethapyr concentration decreased − 92.4 and − 95.2%, respectively. For imazapic, the concentration in the washing effluent decreased − 69.1 and − 80.1%, respectively. The results indicate that the system was effective in the treatment of the effluent containing residues of the herbicide Only®.

The treatment of effluent from anaerobic digestion of organic wastes was carried out using chemical and electrochemical processes, namely, chemical coagulation (CC) with lime, electrocoagulation (EC) with iron consumable electrodes, and electrochemical oxidation (EO) with a boron-doped diamond anode, at different experimental conditions. In the CC assays, the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, 50%, was achieved for a lime concentration of 70 g L⁻¹ after 2 h experiment. Under the experimental conditions studied, EC promoted COD removals of 80% after 5 h and EO led to COD removals of 43% after 6 h electrolysis, being this last removal increased to 60% when chloride was added to the effluent. A combined EC+EO treatment was also performed, utilizing the most favorable experimental conditions obtained in the individual processes, and global removals of 95% in COD and 44% in ammonia nitrogen were attained after 5 h of EC followed by 6 h of EO. These results proved that the combined process can be an efficient alternative in the treatment of effluents from anaerobic digestion of organic wastes with the characteristics of the studied effluent.
