Evidence of microplastics (MP) in gut content of major consumed marine fish species in the State of Kuwait (of the Arabian/Persian Gulf)

Microplastics (MP), the debris that collectively refers to plastic fragments and particles of <5 mm in size within marine environments, has been the subject of interest within the past decade. Evidence of its occurrence and abundance, has been recorded in this communication after examining gastrointestinal specimens of eight commercially available fish species common to the Arabian (Persian) Gulf acquired locally from the State of Kuwait. The species studied belonged to different trophic levels, and the specimens were subjected to Micro Raman and Micro Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) in Attenuated Reflective Mode (ATR) to determine the presence and type of polymer of the MP. The detected MP set a president for the first time in the examined fish species within the State of Kuwait, which are of immense commercial importance. Various particles were detected, and three MP particles (fragments) were detected within the guts of Acanthopagrus latus, Eleutheronemaa tetradactylum and Lutjanus quinquelineatus. Based on the nature and behaviour of these particular fish types which prefer to stay in muddy waters and sheltered lagoons, it is suspected that common primary sources of MP (i.e. waste fragmentation) have led to passive/active intake (e.g. detritus ingestion) of these particles (fragments) by these species of fish in Kuwait.

Microplastics (MPs) remain largely understudied in Small Island Developing States. This study is aimed at comparing the abundance and characteristics of MPs in rural and urban marine coastal sites located along the southern coast of Fiji's main inhabited island, Viti Levu. Collection of subsurface waters (at depth of ca. 0.6 m) was performed at seven sites via Niskin bottle. Samples were filtered over a membrane filter to extract MPs and to allow visual analysis and polymer identification by using attenuated total reflectance in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Findings from this study depict widespread presence of MPs in both urban and rural sites, and show no significant differences in the four parameters studied, i.e. abundance of MP pieces (2.0 vs 1.6 MP/L, respectively), form types (dominance of fibers), size (0.5–0.9 and 1.0–1.4 mm totaling 48% of the samples), and color (blue contributing 30%, and red and black contributing 25% each). These findings challenge the common expectation of a higher MPs pollution in urban areas compared to rural areas.

Water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples were collected from Salt River in Taiwan and analyzed the concentrations of 16 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The analysis results were used to examine the distribution, source, partition behavior, and potential ecological risks of PAHs in the estuarine water systems. The mean concentration of total PAHs in water, SPM, and sediment samples was 0.485–10.2 μg/L, 26.7–169 mg/kg dw, and 0.343–29.4 mg/kg dw, respectively. The highest concentration was found at the river mouth and decreased toward the river and sea with the tide. The distribution of the diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that the combustion of coal and petroleum products are the main sources of PAHs in Salt River. The in site organic carbon normalized partition coefficients for SPM-water (K'ₒc₍SPMW₎) and sediment-water (K'ₒc₍SₑdW₎) were 2.8–4.5 and 4.6–6.0 (log units), respectively, increasing with the number of rings in PAHs. The values log K'ₒc₍SₑdW₎ and log K'ₒc₍SPM₋W₎ showed a significant linear correlation with their octanol-water partition coefficients (p < 0.01), and their slopes were 0.427 and 0.316, respectively. The fugacity fraction was used to evaluate the exchange of PAHs in water-SPM-sediment systems. Results showed that in SPM, 2–4-ring PAHs tend to be released into water, whereas 5–6-ring PAHs in water tend to be adsorbed onto SPM. The exchange of PAHs between water and sediment occurs in the direction of adsorption onto sediment from water. The assessment of the mean risk quotient, total toxicity equivalence, and mean effect range-median quotient of PAHs showed that the PAHs in the water and SPM of Salt River may have moderate to high ecological risk. In sediment, PAHs in the lower reaches and estuary may pose moderate to high ecological risk, whereas PAHs in the middle and upper reaches show low to moderate ecological risk.

Harmful algal blooms involving the dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides occur every summer off the Korean peninsula's central southern coast. To determine whether Cochlodinium bloom-derived organic carbon is incorporated into the subtidal macrobenthic food web, we compared the δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values of suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) and sedimentary organic matter, and macrobenthic consumers between bloom and non-bloom seasons. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealed the presence of Cochlodinium blooms in summer and a predominance of diatoms in autumn. Both the δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values of SPOM were higher in the bloom than in the non-bloom seasons. Such temporal shifts in the δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values were also observed for most macrobenthic consumers collected in both seasons. Consistent temporal isotopic shifts in SPOM and macrobenthos revealed that the Cochlodinium bloom-derived carbon was incorporated into the coastal benthic food web, resulting from its increasing availability during blooms.

The aquatic environment can represent a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes. In the present study, phenotypical, biochemical and molecular techniques were used to screen a collection of marine strains isolated in Italian aquaculture farms to investigate their beta-lactam resistance profiles. The genome of 12 carbapenemase and/or beta-lactamase producing strains was sequenced and a phylogenetic analysis of the beta-lactamases found in their chromosomes was performed. Gene annotation and prediction revealed the presence of blaAₘₚC and blaOXA₋₅₅₋ₗᵢₖₑ in all the Shewanella algae isolates whereas in Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, blaAₘₚC and blaCARB₋₁₉ were found, respectively. Multiple alignments of OXA-55-like and AmpC protein sequences showed different point mutations. Finally, comparisons between enzyme phylogeny and strain clusterization based on sampling sites and dates indicate the diffusion of specific Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) Shewanella algae clones along the Italian Adriatic coast.

This study compares the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metal contaminants in the water and sediment of three habitats (corals, seagrass-beds and near-shores) of Rameswaram Island, India. The overall mean concentration of MPs varies from 24 ± 9 to 96 ± 57 items/L in water, and from 55 ± 21 to 259 ± 88 items/kg in sediment. The value of abundance is the greatest in the coral reef site CR-1 (96 ± 51 items/L; 259 ± 88 items/kg) followed by the seagrass site SG-2 (94 ± 55 items/L; 203 ± 75 items/kg) and the near-shore site St-15 (95 ± 63 items/L; 193 ± 75 items/kg). PE fiber (<1000 μm) is predominant in water, whereas PP fiber and fragment (between 2000 and 5000 μm) dominate the sediment. The SEM images of MPs reveal features which are characteristic of degradation like surface roughness, cracks, protrusions, and chalking, along with surface precipitates of both chemical and biological origin. EDAX images show the presence of Cr, Fe, Hg, Pb, Cu, As and Cd associated with MP surfaces.

Using in situ data of 2014–2018, the summers Emiliania huxleyi blooms in the Barents Sea were studied. The blooms were recorded in the upper mixed layer in July and August every year, during which they spread to cover large areas and were associated with Atlantic waters. The E. huxleyi abundance revealed interannual variability, with the highest values (up to 12 × 10⁶ cells/L) in July 2016. Bloom is characterized by a sharp seasonal thermocline, water surface temperature of about 7.14–11.7 °C, low silicate (0.45 ± 0.08 μM) and nitrogen (0.74 ± 0.16 μM) concentration, high phosphorus concentration (0.09 ± 0.01 μM) and nitrogen to phosphorus ratio significantly below the Redfield ratio. Data confirming the hypothesis of limiting the growth of diatoms by nitrogen concentration are presented. When E. huxleyi bloomed, its biomass exceeded 70% of the total phytoplankton biomass, species diversity was low, and diatoms were practically absent, and dinoflagellates were usually represented by large species.

Macro-litter accumulation surveys were carried out in six beaches in Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale Counties. Macro litter were collected, quantified and characterized to determine their composition, distribution and accumulation rates. The results showed that the accumulation rates ranged between 1.53 ± 1.23 and 11.46 ± 7.72 (for dry zones) and 2.69 ± 2.13 and 8.93 ± 7.87 items m⁻¹ day⁻¹ (for wet zones). Plastics and foam were the most abundant litter categories. Local products constituted about 88% of all the collected litter. Food packaging products constituted about 91.3% of all branded litter types. Marine litter pollution particularly by plastics was widespread in all studied coastal counties. However, a significant amount of litter encountered in the beaches was of local origin, thus a local solution to waste management (that will eliminate leakage into marine environments) will considerably reduce marine litter pollution in Kenya.

In the Maldivian islands, the lack of sewage wastewater treatment and an improper landfill enhance the potential hazard of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products. In order to analyze the occurrence of emerging contaminants in the marine biota, sponges were collected in two coral reef areas of Magoodhoo island (Faafu), one near the landfill and the other furthest from the island. Caffeine, fluoxetine and norfluoxetine were detected only in the proximity of the landfill, with caffeine showing the highest concentration (28.4 ng/g d.w.), followed by fluoxetine (6.00 ng/g d.w.). Norfluoxetine was below the limit of quantification of 10 ng/g d.w. Nitro xylene, N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide and galaxolide were found in both areas, with concentrations of 3.51/6.11/8.54 and <LOQ/1.14/0.62 ng/g d.w., respectively. Due to the vital role of the coral reef for the livelihood and economy of the Maldivian people, attention should be paid to this class of contaminant.

The Ria Formosa is a sheltered large coastal lagoon located on the Atlantic South Coast of Portugal, that has been classified as a natural park since 1987. The lagoon hosts a diverse and abundant fish community and other species of commercial importance. Several economical activities are supported by shipping, and as such, vessel traffic within the Ria Formosa lagoon is very intense at some locations during particular seasons of the year, creating high levels of underwater noise. Recently, strong efforts are being made to turn the main inlet of the lagoon, the Faro-Olhão Inlet, a testing site for small scale tidal stream turbines, which will bring an additional source of underwater noise. Underwater noise can be one of a number of factors causing habitat degradation, as it can perturb fish behavior and cause physiological damage. Therefore, in order to comply with underwater noise pollution regulations, tidal energy technology developers are very interested in minimising the introduction of acoustic energy in the environment during the operation of their devices. Under the scope of project SCORE, which involved the deployment and operation of a floating tidal energy converter, this paper presents and discusses the first baseline noise monitoring performed at Ria Formosa. The acoustic data were collected in two occasions over several days, one in the winter and the other in the summer, in 2017. The obtained analysis results highlight the potential impact of the intense boat traffic in Ria Formosa, and the wide range of sound levels introduced in that ecosystem, and the high diurnal and seasonal variability.
