The origin of PM₂.₅ has long been the subject of debate and stable isotopic tools have been applied to decipher. In this study, weekly PM₂.₅ samples were simultaneously collected at an urban (Seoul) and rural (Baengnyeong Island) site in Korea from January 2014 through February 2016. The seasonal variation of isotopic species showed significant seasonal differences with sinusoidal variation. The isotopic results implied that isotope species from Baengnyeong were mostly originated from coal combustion during China's winter heating seasons, whereas in summer, the isotopic patterns observed that were more likely to be from marine. In Seoul, coal combustion related isotopic patterns increased during China's winter heating period while vehicle related isotopic patterns were dominated whole seasons by default. Therefore, aerosol formation was originated from long-range transported coal combustion-related NOₓ by vehicle-related NH₃ in Seoul. δN-NH₄⁺ in Seoul showed highly enriched ¹⁵N compositions in all seasons, indicating that NH₃ from vehicle emission is the important source of NH₄⁺ in PM₂.₅ in Seoul. In addition, Baengnyeong should be consistently considered as a key region for observing the changes of isotopic features depend on the contribution of individual emissions to the atmospheric as a result of the reduction of coal consumption in China.

Exposure to traffic-related PM₂.₅ mass and its components can affect human health. Meanwhile, indoor concentrations are better exposure predictors as compared to outdoor concentrations because individuals spend the majority of their time indoors. We estimated the impact of traffic emissions on indoor PM₂.₅ mass and its species as a function of road proximity in Massachusetts. A linear regression model was built using 662 indoor samples and 580 ambient samples. Analysis shows that indoor exposures to traffic-related particles increased dramatically with road proximity. We defined relative concentration decrease, R(α), as the ratio of the indoor concentration at perpendicular distance α in meters from the closest major road to the indoor concentration at 1800 m from the major road. R(13) values for PM₂.₅ mass and Black Carbon (BC) were 1.3 (95%CI: 1.4, 1.6) and 2.1 (95%CI: 1.3, 2.8) for A12 roads, and 1.3 (95%CI: 1.2, 1.4) and 1.2 (95%CI: 1.1, 1.3) for A3 roads. R(α) values were also estimated for Fe, Mn, Mo, Sr and Ti for A12 roads, and Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Sr, V and Zn for A3 roads. R(α) values for species associated mainly with brakes, tires or road dust (e.g., Mn, Mo and Sr) were higher than others. For A12 roads, R(13) values for Mn and Mo were 10.9 (95%CI: 0.9, 20.9) and 6.5 (95%CI: 1.4, 11.5), and ranged from 1.3 to 2.1 for other species; for A3 roads, R(13) values for Mn, Mo and Sr were 1.9 (95%CI: 1.1, 2.9), 1.8 (95%CI: 1.1, 2.4), and 8.5 (95%CI: 5.9, 10.9), and ranged from 1.2 to 1.6 for others. Our results indicate a significant impact of local traffic emissions on indoor air, which depends on road proximity. Thus road proximity which has been used in many epidemiological studies is a reasonable exposure metric.

Heavy metal contamination of soil in the vicinity of mining sites is a serious environmental problem around the world when mining residue (slag) is dispersed as dust. We conducted an incubation experiment to investigate the effect of a slag containing high levels of Pb and Zn (62.2 and 33.6 g kg⁻¹ slag as PbO and ZnO, respectively, sampled from a site formerly used as a lead and zinc mine) on the nitrogen cycle when mixed with soil (0–0.048 g slag g⁻¹ soil). The nitrogen cycle provides many life supporting-functions. To assess the quality of the soil in terms of the nitrogen cycle we focused on the dynamics of nitrate and ammonium, and bacterial community structure and functions within the soil. After two weeks of pre-incubation, ¹⁵N-labeled urea (500 mg N kg⁻¹) was added to the soil. Changes in soil pH, the concentration and ¹⁵N ratio of nitrate (NO₃⁻-N) and ammonium, and bacterial relative abundance and community structure were measured. Results indicated that increasing the ratio of slag to soil had a stronger negative effect on nitrification than ammonification, as suggested by slower nitrate accumulation rates as the slag:soil ratio increased. In the treatment with the highest amount of slag, the concentration of NO₃⁻-N was 50% of that in the controls at the end of the incubation. Regarding the bacterial community, Firmicutes had a positive and Planctomycetes a negative correlation with increasing slag concentration. Bacterial community functional analysis showed the proportion of bacterial DNA sequences related to nitrogen metabolism was depressed with increasing slag, from 0.68 to 0.65. We concluded that the slag impacted the soil bacterial community structure, and consequently influenced nitrogen dynamics. This study could form the basis of further investigation into the resistance of the nitrogen cycle to contamination in relation to soil bacterial community.

Soil organic matter (SOM) is the principal aggregating agent for soil aggregation and also the main adsorbent for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), which may thereby affect OCP distribution in soils subjected to different land use types. However, the potential effects of land use on SOM and OCP distribution patterns in soil aggregates are not well understood. In this study, soils from farmlands and barelands in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area were analyzed to determine the influence of land use on OCP distribution and composition in different aggregate fractions (>3, 1–3, 0.25–1, and <0.25 mm). The results showed that the levels of ∑DDTs ranged from 9.01 to 27.48 with a mean of 14.40 ng g⁻¹, and ∑HCHs ranged from 2.06 to 4.66 with a mean of 3.19 ng g⁻¹ in farmland soils. In comparison, bareland soils were less contaminated, with total DDTs and HCHs fell in the range of 0.75–5.01 ng g⁻¹ and not detected (n.d.)-1.40 ng g⁻¹ respectively. In regard to the distribution patterns in soil aggregates, the residual levels of ∑DDTs and ∑HCHs tended to a certain degree to enrich in microaggregates (<0.25 mm) relative to bulk soils. A further analysis revealed that the enrichment of ∑DDTs and ∑HCHs in microaggregates were mainly attributed to the accumulation of p,p'-DDE and β-HCH. Moreover, SOM was found also enriched in microaggregates. The enrichment of SOM was significantly and positively correlated with these of ∑DDTs, ∑HCHs, and the dominant metabolites (i.e., DDE and β-HCH) in both land use types. Such results indicated that the variations in behavior of OCPs could be linked to the processes of soil aggregate turnover. These findings may help to enrich the theory of soil OCPs sequestration and establish targeted strategies to mitigate their health risks in the environment.

Creosol and 4-ethylguaiacol are two important methoxyphenols, lignin pyrolysis products, which are discharge into the atmosphere in large quantities. In this work, theoretical calculations of the reaction mechanism towards the two compounds with NO₃ radicals was performed using DFT method. The rate constants and toxicity assessment were also investigated. The atmospheric lifetime for creosol and 4-ethylguaiacol were 0.82 and 0.19 h, respectively. A new reaction pathway was proposed for the transformation of methoxyl into hydroxyl, which has not yet been clarified in previous studies. The toxicity of methoxyphenols and their degradation products is closely related to their hydrophobicity. Although most degradation products are less toxic, they also should be pay more attention, especially for nitro-substituents.A new reaction pathway was proposed for the transformation of methoxyl into hydroxyl. This work investigated the role of natural organic matter (NOM) in the environmental processes of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and the uptake and accumulation of AgNP in wheat. Different NOMs (Suwannee River humic acids [SRHA], fulvic acid [FA]) and Ag elements (Ag⁽⁰⁾ and Ag⁺) were incubated in a hydroponic media for 15 days. The results showed that the NOM (10 mg C L⁻¹) altered the dissolution, stabilization, uptake and accumulation of AgNP. The dissolution of AgNP declined in the presence of NOM. Compared with FA, the dissolved Ag⁺ decreased much more from 0.30 mg L⁻¹ to 0.10 mg L⁻¹ in the presence of SRHA. The fluorescence quenching results indicated that SRHA exhibited stronger binding to Ag⁺ than that of FA, and the quenching constants Ksv were 0.1309 (SRHA) and 0.0074 (FA), respectively. CO, CH, COC, and MeOH were involved in the interaction between NOM and AgNP. The NOM decreased the accumulated content of Ag in wheat. Hence, NOM alleviated the inhibition of AgNP to wheat growth. SRHA reduced the Ag content of wheat roots approximately 3-fold. These results clearly indicated the importance of NOM on altering the behavior, fate and toxicity of AgNP in an environment.

Numerous studies have documented the negative effects of ozone (O₃) on tree species in growing season, however, little is done in non-growing season. Three evergreen tree species, Phoebe bournei (Hemsl.) Yang (P. bournei), Machilus pauhoi Kanehira (M. pauhoi) and Taxus chinensis (Pilger) Rehd (T. chinensis), were exposed to non-filtered air, 100 nmol mol⁻¹ O₃ air (E1) and 150 nmol mol⁻¹ O₃ air (E2) in open-top chambers in subtropical China. In the entire period of experiment, O₃ fumigation decreased net photosynthesis rate (Pn) through stomatal limitation during the transition period from growing to non-growing season (TGN), and through non-stomatal limitation during the period of non-growing season (NGS) in all species tested. Meanwhile, O₃ fumigation reduced and delayed the resilience of Pn in all species tested during the transition period from non-growing to growing season (TNG). O₃ fumigation significantly decreased chlorophyll contents during NGS, whereas no obvious injury symptoms were observed till the end of experiment. O₃ fumigation induced increases in levels of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, total phenolics and reduced ascorbic acid, and changes in four plant endogenous hormones as well in all species tested during NGS. During NGS, E1 and E2 reduced Pn by an average of 80.11% in P. bournei, 94.56% in M. pauhoi and 12.57% in T. chinensis, indicating that the O₃ sensitivity was in an order of M. pauhoi > P. bournei > T. chinensis. Overall, O₃ fumigation inhibited carbon fixation in all species tested during NGS. Furthermore, O₃-induced physiological activities also consumed the dry matter. All these suggested that elevated O₃, which is likely to come true during NGS in the future, will adversely affect the accumulation of dry matter and the resilience of Pn during TNG in evergreen tree species, and further inhibit their growth and development in the upcoming growing season.

People living a subsistence lifestyle in the Arctic are highly exposed to persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Formerly Used Defense (FUD) sites are point sources of PCB pollution; the Arctic contains thousands of FUD sites, many co-located with indigenous villages. We investigated PCB profiles and biological effects in freshwater fish (Alaska blackfish [Dallia pectoralis] and ninespine stickleback [Pungitius pungitius]) living upstream and downstream of the Northeast Cape FUD site on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. Despite extensive site remediation, fish remained contaminated with PCBs. Vitellogenin concentrations in males indicated exposure to estrogenic contaminants, and some fish were hypothyroid. Downstream fish showed altered DNA methylation in gonads and altered gene expression related to DNA replication, response to DNA damage, and cell signaling. This study demonstrates that, even after site remediation, contaminants from Cold War FUD sites in remote regions of the Arctic remain a potential health threat to local residents – in this case, Yupik people who had no influence over site selection and use by the United States military.

The isotopic fractionation could contribute to understanding the Cd accumulation mechanisms in plant species. However, there are few of systematical investigations with regards to the Cd isotope fractionation in hyperaccumulator plants. The Cd tolerant Ricinus communis and hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum were cultivated in nutrient solutions with varying Cd and EDTA concentrations. Cd isotope ratios were determined in the solution, root, stem and leaf. The two investigated plants were systematically enriched in light isotopes relative to their solutions (Δ114/110Cdplant-solution = −0.64‰ to −0.29‰ for R. communis and −0.84‰ to −0.31‰ for S. nigrum). Cd isotopes were markedly fractionated among the plant tissues. For both plant species, an enrichment in light Cd isotopes from solution to root was noted, followed by a slight depletion in light Cd isotopes from root to shoot. Noticeably, the chelation process has caused lighter Cd isotope enrichment in the root of R. communis and S. nigrum. Further, the good fits between △114/110Cdroot-plant and ln Froot (or between △114/110Cdshoot-plant and ln Fshoot) indicate that Cd isotopic signatures can be used to study Cd transportation during the metabolic process of plants. This study suggests that knowledge of the Cd isotope ratios could also provide new tool for identifying the Cd-avoiding crop cultivars.

Chemical composition and pollutant sorption of biochar-derived organic matter fractions (BDOMs) are critical for understanding the long-term environmental significance of biochar. Phenanthrene (PHE) sorption by the humic acid-like (HAL) fractions isolated from plant straw- (PLABs) and animal manure-based (ANIBs) biochars, and the residue materials (RES) after HAL extraction was investigated. The HAL fraction comprised approximately 50% of organic carbon (OC) of the original biochars. Results of XPS and 13C NMR demonstrated that the biochar-derived HAL fractions mainly consisted of aromatic clusters substituted by carboxylic groups. The CO2 cumulative surface area of BDOMs excluding PLAB-derived RES fractions was obviously lower than that of corresponding biochars. The sorption nonlinearity of PHE by the fresh biochars was significantly stronger than that of the BDOM fractions, implying that the BDOM fractions were more chemically homogeneous. The BDOMs generally exhibited comparable or higher OC-normalized distribution coefficients (Koc) of PHE than the original biochars. The PHE logKoc values of the fresh biochars correlated negatively with the micropore volumes due to steric hindrance effect. In contrast, a positive relationship between the sorption coefficients (Kd) of BDOMs and the micropore volumes was observed in this study, suggesting that pore filling could dominate PHE sorption by the BDOMs. The positive correlation between the PHE logKoc values of the HAL fractions and the aromatic C contents indicates that PHE sorption by the HAL fractions was regulated by aromatic domains. The findings of this study improve our knowledge of the evolution of biochar properties after application and its potential environmental impacts.
