Black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) was chosen as bioindication species for several reasons. Black pine stands are located throughout Istria, at various distances from the above mentioned power plant. Black pine does not shed needles in the autumn, thus prolonging their exposure to sulphur dioxide emissions. Also neeedles stay on branches for several years, giving us the possibility to analyse the effect on older needles

International audience | The migration of uranium from polluted soil has been investigated in the field, and through modelling of thermodynamics and kinetics of uranium-water-rock interactions. Field monitoring following surface contamination by uranium deposits revealed up to 5 m deep uranium migration in soil and chalk substrate, as well as uranium concentrations in groundwater significantly higher than the geochemical background. Such observations can hardly be explained by a pure reactive transport dominated by reversible adsorption of uranium onto mineral phases. Therefore, a reactive transport model using the HYTEC code has been developed to better assess uranium migration through soil to the carbonate aquifer. Reactive transport modelling shows that adsorption of U (VI) at equilibrium on goethite at pH 7 is responsible for strong immobilization of uranium in the soil and carbonate matrix, matching uranium concentration profiles observed in boreholes. Simulations considering highly mobile ternary complex Ca2UO2(CO3)3(aq) in the aqueous phase cannot account alone for the rapid migration of uranium through the unsaturated zone. Without a mobile colloidal phase, the model clearly underestimates the concentration of aqueous U(VI) that reached groundwater underneath polluted soils.

This study examines the common ground between current scientific knowledge and stakeholders’ perception of ecosystem services in mixed forests versus monocultures. An enquiry was performed within the frame of the project FORBIO aiming at the ‘Assessment of the effects of tree species BIOdiversity on FORest ecosystem functioning’ (http://forbio.biodiversity.be). The objective of this enquiry was to confront the perception of the influence of mixed species stands on ecosystem services in Belgium with actual scientific knowledge. The target groups were forest managers, users and scientists. As a general frame for the questionnaire, the ‘Millenium Ecosystem Assessment’, assessing the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being, was selected. Respondents were asked to express their degree of agreement with statements related to the provisioning (production/quality, financial return), supporting (biodiversity, nutrient cycling, resistance), regulating (climate, air, soil, water) and cultural (aesthetics, recreation) ecosystem services, comparing mixed species to pure stands. Other questions addressed management objectives and the general profile of participants. The web-based questionnaires (SurveyMonkey) were established in Flemish and in French and invitations to respond were distributed by e-mail among key contact persons of forestry/nature associations, forest managers and scientists. After one month, a total of 142 and 228 responses were collected for the questionnaire in Flemish and in French, respectively. In this paper, we summarize main results by analyzing the profile of respondents and describing their perception of forest ecosystem services. Through the confrontation of this perception with the current scientific knowledge and through the identification of established scientific facts unknown to the general public, we identify gaps in scientific knowledge and ways of improving communication between scientists and managers. | FORBIO: Assessment of the effects of tree species BIOdiversity on FORest ecosystem functioning’

International audience | Due to the dramatic quantity of plastic debris released into our environment, one of the biggest challenges of the next decades is to trace and quantify microplastics (MPs) in our environments, especially to better evaluate their capacity to transport other contaminants such as trace metals. In this study, trace elements (Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, and U) were analyzed in the microplastic subsurface (200 μm) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Microplastics subjected to the marine environment were collected on beaches (Guadeloupe) exposed to the north Atlantic gyre. We established a strategy to discriminate sorbed contaminants from additives based on the metal concentration profiles in MP subsurface using qualitative and quantitative approaches. A spatiotemporal correlation of the sorption pattern was proposed to compare MPs in terms of relative exposure time and time-weighted average concentrations in the exposure media.

Today, the environmental awareness is leading to the recovery of the solid organic waste and the use of fossil fuels. Methanisation, or anaerobic digestion, is a solution. This process is the transformation of organic matter by bacteria in the absence of oxygen. It allows both the treatment of organic waste and provides two main products biogas and digestate. Digestate is an improved fertilizer that can be used by spreading or composting. Biogas can be used to produce heat or electricity. Biogas production is currently supported by governments of developed countries. In France, the number of installations is gradually increasing (Club Biogaz ATEE, 2011). However, waste used as raw material can potentially be rich in microorganisms. Currently, some questions arise about the potential spread of micro-organisms by this type of process. Among the among the dispersal pathways, the airborne mode of spread is often poorly explored. During the anaerobic process, a few phases seem to be able to cause the aerosolization of microorganisms, for example, the stock of raw materials or digestate handling. In this context, the EMAMET project was realised to provide data on atmospheric emissions from these processes (Bayle et al, 2016). The objectives of this study are to enumerate and describe the airborne microbial community on anaerobic digestor site caracterized by molecular approach. On a quarterly basis, over a one-year period, of the anaerobic digestion of waste water activated sludge has been monitored. For each campaign, four sampling locations have been investigated; the storage area for raw materials, the raw material preparation area, the digestion reactor and the phase separation zone of the digestate. A fifth simple, an outdoor control sampling point was also included.

Coral recruitment was assessed in highly diverse and economically important Spermonde Archipelago, a reef system subjected to land-based sources of siltation/pollution and destructive fishing, over a period of 2 years. Recruitment on settlement tiles reached up to 705 spat m�2 yr�1 and was strongest in the dry season (July–October), except off-shore, where larvae settled earlier. Pocilloporidae dominated nearshore, while a more diverse community of Acroporidae, Poritidae and others settled in the less polluted mid-shelf and off-shore reefs. Non-coral fouling community appeared to hardly influence initial coral settlement on the tiles, although, this does not necessarily infer low coral post-settlement mortality, which may be enhanced at the near- and off-shore reefs as indicated by increased abundances of potential space competitors on natural substrate. Blast fishing showed no local reduction in coral recruitment and live hard coral cover increased in oligotrophic reefs, indicating potential for coral recovery, if managed effectively.

peer reviewed | It is now irrefutable that air pollution caused by large amounts of Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) and respiratory particulates or Particulate Matter less than 10 mu m in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) has numerous undesired consequences on human health. Air quality degradation far from the African continent, in the US and in Europe, caused by high concentrations of African dust, is seen as a major threat even though most of these countries are very distant from the Sahara. Surprisingly, no estimates of TSP or PM10 levels near the Saharan dust source are available. Based on horizontal visibility observations which are reduced by the presence of dust in the atmosphere, TSP and PM10 levels are estimated throughout the year 2000 at Nouakchott-Airport, Mauritania, using relations found in the literature. It appears that concentrations of particles are significant both in terms magnitude and frequency, as the 24-hour PM10 thresholds established by the US EPA National Ambient Air Quality Standards and the EU Limits Values for Air Quality were exceeded 86 and 137 times, respectively. The average annual concentration is far above air quality standards and estimated at 159 mu g m(-3) for TSP and 108 mu g m(-3) for PM10. These very high particulate levels are likely to represent an important public health hazard and should be considered as a major environmental risk.
