Assessment of pollutant removal processes and kinetic modelling in vertical flow constructed wetlands at elevated pollutant loading

Constructed wetland (CW), an ecological wastewater treatment technology, is low cost and easily to operate. Vertical flow constructed wetland (VF-CW) systems have been used to treat various wastewaters across the world. The present work exhibits the detail study of five type’s multi-layered vertically constructed wetlands operated at 24 h hydraulic retention time under semi-continuous vertical flow mode. Except N-NO₃⁻, all the pollutants were sufficient removal in iron scraps constructed wetland (ISs-CW). The highest average pollutant removal efficiency achieved in ISs-CW was 85.04%, 77.57%, 85.99%, 62.01% and 88.91% for N-NH₄⁺, N-NO₂⁺, total nitrogen, total phosphate and sulphate respectively. The present CWs planted with Eichhornia crassipes is a promising system for municipal wastewater treatment. The first-order kinetic modelling was best suited for the removal rate since it presents higher R², rate constant (k) and B values.

Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus are vectors of diseases that constitute public health problems. The discovery of products capable of inhibiting their development which are less harmful to the environment would have a huge impact on vector control. Here, natural cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), technical CNSL, anacardic acid, cardanol, and cardol were isolated from Anacardium occidentale and evaluated for larvicidal and pupicidal activity against Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus under laboratory and field conditions. The activities of phenol, resorcinol, salicylic acid, and pentadecane, commercial chemicals similar in structure to nut shell derivatives, were also evaluated. All of the fractions extracted from A. occidentale oil exerted larvicidal effects against both mosquito species (LC₅₀ 5.4–22.6 mg/L), and two of the aforementioned were effective against pupae (LC₅₀ 90.8–109.7 mg/L). Of all the fractions tested, cardol demonstrated the strongest larvicidal and pupicidal effects and presented the most prolonged residual activity against the larvae and pupae of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus under field conditions. This study suggests that A. occidentale nut shell derivatives are sustainable and promising candidates for the development of novel insecticides to overcome the problem of harmful chemical insecticides.

The liver is one of the vital and sensitive organs which are usually exposed against the toxicity of mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd). The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the potential toxicological effects of both Cd and Hg as individual and combined. Hepatotoxicity was evaluated by monitoring the biochemical parameters of the liver and their accumulation in the liver as well as therapeutic role of vitamin C in said toxicity in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). In this research, cadmium chloride (1.5 mg/kg), mercuric chloride (1.2 mg/kg), and vitamin C (150 mg/kg of body weight) were orally administered to treatment groups of the rabbits for 28 alternative days. Various biochemical parameters of the liver such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), total protein, and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) were estimated using blood samples. Some biochemical parameters like ASAT, ALAT, LDH, GGT, and bilirubin were significantly elevated (P ≤ 0.001) in individual Cd and Hg treatment groups, while the level of total protein was found to be significantly declined. The effects of Cd and Hg in the presence of vitamin C on these biochemical parameters were low as compared to metals-treated groups. Similar results were found when rabbits were treated with co-administration of both metals and vitamin C. Accumulation of Cd and Hg found to be higher in the liver. However, chemoprevention and chemotreatment with vitamin C significantly (P ≤ 0.01) minimized the toxicological effects of both metals but not regained the accumulation similar to that of the control group. The findings of this study provide awareness on accumulation of metals in the liver in rabbits and their toxicity tested through biochemical parameters as well as the therapeutic role of vitamin C in such alterations.

Straw burning has become a hot topic in recent years as it poses a great risk not only to the lung health of residents in exposed areas but also to large-scale haze events. In order to have a more comprehensive understanding of straw burning research, based on the bibliometric analysis of Science Citation Index Expanded from Web of Science, the research progress of straw burning pollution from 1972 to 2016 and the future research trends were carried out in this paper. The research focuses on the document type, language, publication year, times cited and its output characteristics, subject category, journal, national and institutional distribution, author, etc. The results show that the study of straw burning pollution has shown a significant increase over the past 45 years. A total of 813 publications were found, and English was the most commonly used language. Articles were the most frequently appeared document types, and the researches were strongly embracing with the top 3 popular subject categories of “environmental sciences and ecology,” “agriculture,” and “meteorology and atmospheric sciences.” We identified that the major journals publishing straw burning pollution research were Atmospheric Environment, followed by Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. China as a leader in paper quantity played an important role in the research field of straw burning pollution, while the USA and India were located in the second and third positions. The most productive institution was Chinese Academy of Sciences, followed by Peking University and University Arkansas. Based on our analysis and the consideration of current environmental problems, more studies should focus on the following three aspects in the future: driving mechanism of emission characteristics, construction of high-resolution emission inventories, and the influencing mechanism of straw burning pollutants on climate change and human health. Our analysis and prospects can be served as a useful reference for future studies.

This research work aims to develop a biomaterial entrapped with iron nanoparticles by green synthesis method in which biomass act as both reducing and capping agent. Iron nanoparticles embedded in Citrus limetta peels were characterised using ICP-MS for determination of metal loading, XRD, XPS for crystallinity and oxidation states, TEM followed by FESEM-EDS for particle size and morphology. Sizes of nanoparticles were found to be in the range of 4–70 nm. Batch experiments were conducted to study the effect of different parameters such as contact time, amount of biomaterial and volume of chromium(VI) solution for 2500 mg L⁻¹ of Cr(VI). Complete reduction was attained for a contact time of 5 min with 1.5 g of biomaterial for initial concentration of 2500 mg L⁻¹. The experimental results inferred that 1 g of biomaterial completely reduced 33 mg of hexavalent Cr to trivalent Cr. XRD and XPS revealed that iron nanoparticles are in amorphous form while XPS confirms Fe⁰ state. The transition of Fe⁰ to Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ during the treatment with chromium solution confirms the reduction of Cr⁶⁺ to Cr³⁺.

The advent of biotechnology provided the synthesis of nanoproducts with diverse applications in the field of medicine, agriculture, food, among others. However, the toxicity of many nanoparticles (NP) currently used, which can penetrate natural systems and impact organisms, is not known. Thus, in this study, we evaluated whether the short exposure (5 days) to low concentrations of chitosan-coated zein nanoparticles (ZNP-CS) (0.2 ng/kg, 40 ng/kg, and 400.00 ng/kg) was capable of causing behavioral alterations compatible with cognitive deficit, as well as anxiety and depression-like behavior in Swiss mice. However, we observed an anxiogenic effect in the animals exposed to the highest ZNP-CS concentration (400.00 ng/kg), without locomotor alterations suggestive of sedation or hyperactivity in the elevated plus maze (EPM) test. We also observed that the ZNP-CS caused depressive-like behavior, indicated by the longer immobile time in the tail suspension test and the animals exposed to ZNP-CS presented deficit in recognition of the new object, not related to locomotor alteration in this test. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the neurotoxicity of ZNP in a mammal animal model, contributing to the biological safety assessment of these nanocomposites.

Eco-ditches (ecological ditches) not only drain water from rice paddies, but also facilitate the removal of nitrogen (N). We established an experiment with both static and flowing water in 2017 to observe N removal from rice paddy drainage by eco-ditches containing three different types of monoculture vegetation: Zizania aquatica, Canna indica L., and Pontederia cordata. Results showed that ammonia volatilization and plant uptake contributed little to N removal. Harvest of Z. aquatica from the eco-ditch during the late growing season had an appreciable effect on N removal. However, harvest of C. indica L. and P. cordata had negligible effects. During static test, the concentration of total N (TN) and ammonium N (NH₄⁺-N) and the pH all decreased from the surface to the bottom of water. The concentration of nitrate N (NO₃⁻-N) did not exhibit stratification. In a flowing water experiment, ditches with Z. aquatica, C. indica L., and P. cordata had the following average removal rates: TN 15.8%, 11.6%, and 27.9%; NO₃⁻-N 4.2%, 8.4%, and 17.8%; NH₄⁺-N 22.8%, 16.4%, and 37.5%, respectively. The removal rates of TN and NH₄⁺-N decreased with the increase of water level, while that of NO₃⁻-N increased significantly. Nitrogen removal rates decreased with the increase of influent TN concentration or flow rate. Nitrogen removal rate of P. cordata ditch was highly dependent on the influent TN concentration, but the flow rate was not as important due to the great drag caused by its large density. While the contrary was observed in the C. indica L. ditch. For Z. aquatica ditch, both the flow rate and the TN concentration had a strong negative correlation with the N removal rate.

Confined animal feeding operations generate high levels of airborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including pathogenic strains that may pollute the local environment or pose a health risk to both animals and workers. However, the communities of airborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria in such operations are not fully understood, especially in fine particles that penetrate deeply into the respiratory system. To address these gaps, manures and aerosols from inside and outside of animal houses were collected, and the characteristics of antibiotic-resistant bacteria were analyzed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing to amplify the V3–V4 region of bacterial 16S rRNA. The results indicated that animal species was the main factor that influenced the bacterial community of both manure and aerosol samples, while antibiotic selection was the major factor that influenced the bacterial community of aerosol samples from the inside of animal houses. An obvious clustering difference was detected between manure and aerosol samples. No significant difference in both alpha- and beta-diversity indices was detected between fine and coarse particles. As a key genus, Staphylococcus was found to drive the difference in the bacterial community of tetracycline-resistant bacteria to total culturable bacteria and erythromycin-resistant bacteria and also the difference in the bacterial community from aerosol to manure samples. Current data would help in evaluating the risk to human and livestock health and tracing the source of airborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animal farms.

This paper represents a new proposed trade model of “Intercountries Trade Force (ITF)” which is inspired by Intermolecular Interaction Forces in chemical sciences, and has potential to compensate for the deficiencies of the gravity trade model proposed by Jan Tinbergen in 1962. The main differences between our new model and the earlier gravity trade theory are (i) there is a time-variant variable called the gravity index (GI) which means that the earlier gravity theory was treated as only a variable in our new proposed model and (ii) our new proposed trade model has a higher chance of adoption in the real trade world rather than the earlier gravity trade model which always needs to be expanded by scholars. In order to empirically test our new proposed trade model, we applied it in an empirical econometric model to analyze the Russian gas export to the EU member states, not explored earlier. Results revealed that our new trade proposed model adjusts with the empirical energy trade pattern.

This paper searches the role of financial sector development in energy sector and therefore in climate changes in the case of developing and developed countries. Panel data ranging from 1960 to 2014 on an annual basis has been selected from 176 countries. Results suggest that carbon dioxide emissions in developed and developing countries are in long-term equilibrium relationship with financial sector; trade and finance sectors have long-term significant impacts on carbon emissions and therefore carbon emissions converge to their long-term equilibrium levels through the channels of finance and trade sectors. Impulse response analyses proved that finance and trade sectors have negative (reducing) impact on the emission levels in the case of developed economies while they have positive impact in the case of developing economies. These sectors exert significant effects on energy consumption of countries as well. Results confirm that developed countries are more successful in energy conservation policies compared to developing countries. Therefore, authorities in developing countries need to implement conservation policies effectively by mainly encouraging and supporting investments in alternative energy uses in order to prevent increases in emission levels through expansion in financial and trade sectors.
